Looking forward to the cooler days to eat your delicious Apple pies and easy family dinners with steak pies and gravy. Fingers crossed that financial reasons don't make you change the recipes as I like to stock up my freezer.

Visited yesterday with two friends. We were a bit apprehensive after reading negative reports about the bread etc. Nothing to worry about at all. Beef teacakes with pickled onion and mayo, just as good as always. Coffee, apple pie with cream also just as good. Staff behind counter very friendly especially the young man ( with glasses). He even showed us the teacakes after we expressed our concern about the reviews. We won't be changing to anywhere else.

Menu offers 'Granary' toast, but it now seems to be something else. 'Granary' is a brand and reigstered trademark of Hovis, so if it's not made by Hovis it's not 'Granary', and you need to change the desciption. 'Granary style' bread ? Papers. Understand the need to be prudent with costs; but a false economy ? I used to come in specifically to read The Times; bought 2x coffee, £6.10. I now have one take-away coffee, £2.75., and sit in the car-park. I know of other regulars who came primarily to read the papers, and now don't Tables. Now an obstacle course to get round them; and the lay-out lacks privacy. Staff are a great asset to the business.

Called for lunch with a friend. I had a ham salad sandwich, beef & onion for my friend. Both sandwiches were generously filled with meat and tasted lovely. We both enjoyed a lovely hot coffee and both opted for the homemade scones with jam and cream which were light and buttery! Very tasty!! The staff were very pleasant and service was good.

We have been coming to the ME 3-4 times a week for many years & whilst eating our sandwiches today noticed the quality of the bread was poor! I mentioned this to a staff member who told me they’ve changed suppliers!!! This is a bad decision in our opinion as Hadfields (who used to supply all the ME) know how to make good quality bread/t cakes & rolls! The sandwiches are expensive enough and warrant a good quality bread!!! Please go back to previous supplier!!!!

I came here with my mum and 15 month old for lunch on Sat 27th Jan. My baby has a dairy allergy so i needed to know if the soups had any dairy in - asked a young waitress if she could help and she said she didn’t know so would go and ask - she was very polite. She asked a young lad to help and have a look who was less than impressed as i stood and watched him, pull the book out the drawer flick through as fast as he could and say it didn’t tell him - rubbish. So as i proceeded to stand there and state i wasn’t happy with that (or him for that matter) i suggested someone else come take a look and then i think it was someone called Julie maybe? who came, got the book and said all soup has milk in - fine. Absolutely not happy that the young man was so incredibly rude about the situation, do you not train on allergies? Because i think he could do with a refresher course and some customer service to go with it. So ruined our lunch as it just us plain annoying to be made to feel like your putting staff out to ask about an allergy that could cause my child to be unwell. 0/10

Visited with a work colleague recently to stop off for some lunch whilst we discussed the days meeting. We were greeted with a great atmosphere, furnishings and the extremely friendly staff who took our order quickly and efficiently. We had one of the best BLTs I've had in a long time (crispy bacon, fresh tomatoes and lettuce with proper Hellman's mayonnaise all within a toasted plump white bun). Pairing this with Fresh OJ and a coffee for my colleague. We obviously had to go for the delicious apple pie and cream which we highly recommend! Parking was ample for the time we arrived (11ish) and we were seated in the sun room and had ample room to have our notes in front of us and still enjoy the great food. All in all I would highly recommend this location and will definitely be visiting when heading back over the tops from meetings and social visits!

As a regular at Merrie England... I've got to say, their coffee is something of an unsung hero. Honestly, it's a hidden gem that I reckon gives those big high street chains a run for their money. There's something about it, for me it's just the right strength and aroma that's perfect for kick-starting my day or giving me that much-needed mid-afternoon pick-me-up. But let's not forget about the food – it's not just the coffee that pulls me back time and again. The sausage butties, especially on a granary roll, are a not-so-well-known delight. Trust me ;-)

Have been coming to Merrie England for years and decided to call with a group of friends (not from the area and so have never had the pleasure) for lunch on our way past! There was a bit of a queue at the drive through, though I must say it didn’t last too long and gave us chance to decide on our orders. I went for the hot beef which was 10/10 as always, packed to the rafters with delicious beef slices (never chewy) and gravy on a toasted teacake with horseradish. We also ordered a ham and cheese toastie, a turkey club and an egg mayo salad which although simple sandwiches my friends were very impressed! For pudding we got a rum truffle, slice of apple pie and I took a whole Bakewell tart for home (a family favourite) which again I would 1000% recommend as all made fresh in store! Merrie England is great value for money (they also do student discount ✔️) and fabulous portion sizes !! The staff are always very friendly and I like that you can see them preparing the sandwiches through the little window! If you’re ever in Huddersfield it would be a crime not to visit, infact, after writing this review I am now going to go today for my lunch!

Ordered their Special Cheese Toasty which turned out to be revolting. Consisted of a Teacake (as we call buns/baps etc. up North) with a few crumbs of Wenslydale, onion, a slice of Tomato and about a cupful of some watery 'Pickle'. Squashed flat in some sort of Panini maker, microwaved for a few seconds and then squashed again. Came to the table as a 1/2 inch flat, cool in the middle and remains of the bread boiled in this awful 'pickle'. The worst thing I've ever been served. The mug of tea was fine.

An innovative management getting very GREEDY. I can taste cheaper ingredients, substituted in snacks whilst prices have been hiked to the max. Reducing the volume of sandwich filling and adding plant based proteins to save on more expensive animal proteins? More sugar and salt are definitely 'cheapo' additives. Even the coffee has lost its former lactose richness.

Oh no , What’s happened to the merry England !!! …… Been coming here for years for the beef salad sandwich. However, the last time we visited was very disappointing ( hardly any beef or mayo) . We just put it down to a bad day etc. so we went again a few weeks later ( today) and I’m afraid it was even worse . Stale bread, even less filling and you could hardly tell there was mayo on it .. not sure I’ll ever go back, the end of an era …… :(

I have known this restaurant since it first opened, although I was a child at the time and could not afford to eat here. As I grew up I would visit from time to time as it was convenient and the food was good although a little pricey. However the service has gone south in a big way over the last few years, staff can be rude and truculent, some staff are still pleasant. If you order from the drive through then the chances that you will get the food you ordered are slim, especially if it is for more than one person, I have on occasion had to return more than once to get the correct order. The food has also gone down hill and the portion size is now laughable. The scones used to be a particular favorite of mine but now seem to have become merely bite sized. If the kids did not consider a visit to The Merrie England as a treat then I would never return. Overall Food.....average Price.....expensive Service.....without a smile, some staff ok.

I have been coming to this venue for a long time as my daughter loves it. However I have on a number of occasions butted heads with "Karen" who claims to be a manager. (and have also made official complaints) On this instance, I asked for a receipt as the last few occasions I have come, I have ordered the same item but been charged a different amount each time. I asked for some clarity on the pricing. (Think sometimes £1 sometimes £3). Karen immediately became hostile and demanded to know what I wanted her to do about it, when I asked to speak to a manager she told me she was one, when I asked how my complaint would be handled, she told me "well come back later in the week I guess". No offer to take my details or providing me with a complaints number. I called into the branch to ask for the head office number to make the complaint and I heard her demand the phone to speak to me, she kept up the hostile tone and smugly said "make sure you get my name, its Karen." I do not feel I was making an unreasonable request, I do feel her handling of the matter was inappropriate and overly hostile. If she is a manager, there is a clear need for retraining. However this isn't the first time i've experienced this sort of behaviour from her and unless the company actions it, Im sure it won't be the last for me, or someone else. She made myself and my 6 year old daughter feel horrible and I feel this is very telling when a child picks up on how passive aggressive someone is being.

We like it here and visit regularly. It is a bit pricey but this is usually balanced out by the good quality food and service... However, today's visit was really disappointing. We visited at 13:40 and (in fairness) it was busy but... ...they had run out of boiled egg for the salad sandwiches ...they were down tobonlybone choice of soup ...the cheesecake was cracked and obviously not fresh - although it did taste OK ...the bottles of water were only 330ml and cost £2.05 ...the scones has obviously been burnt and the bottoms has been sliced off to cover the fact, leaving them dried out and slightly unpalatable As I said, disappointing

New coal seams form in the time it takes to get served in here, although it is also the fault of the customers, as most seem to be coffin ⚰️ dodgers or ladies who lunch with time on their hands and a total pig ignorance / no concept of other people. Stand taking forever at the counter. I waited 15 minutes with only 2 people in front of me, and that’s unacceptable, especially considering how many tables they have to deal with - if the place was packed, I would despair of ever getting served! That said, once I managed to order, the food arrived promptly enough, I will give them that. Beef sandwich and an apple pie like they recommend. Can’t really see what all the fuss is about re the beef sandwich. Seemed a tad dry and needed a splash of gravy imo. Bread was bordering on stale too! On the other hand the apple pie lived up to the hype - massive portion and sort of gelatinous inside; very slightly jelly like. Smashing! It’s in an old petrol station (they’ve repurposed the petrol pole with their own sign! Some might say that’s tacky but personally I think it’s nice to remember what went before with a small token gesture like this). Now, it’s a short drive from the M62 down the A640, and I would happily use it as a motorway services as a preference to Hartshead Moor…..but only if they can get an efficient ordering system going. Here’s a suggestion for management: how about a touch screen like McDonalds have for ordering, and people can just take a table number and sit down? Or if that’s too expensive, a pad of order forms, a pencil, and come get it from the customer’s table?

Merrie England used to be the best coffee shops in Huddersfield. Not any more. The greedy owners don't realise that they are ruining the business. I visited 2 days ago with my elderly mother we had 2 cold beef and onion sandwiches the tea cakes are no longer generous Yorkshire tea cakes more like muffins and the small amount of beef bolstered by onions was an insult. 2 sandwiches and drinks for £14 in a cafeteria, time to look somewhere else! Interesting that the owners/managers never comment on the increasing amount of bad reviews on this site.

The standard was nowhere near as good as it used to be the filling was ok but not a lot of it. Both my sons said they were still very hungry and bought another sandwich to take out. I work nearby so visit every now and again for lunch. Sandwiches are usually good, as are the soups, but with the takeaway soups the bread is almost always on the stale side! Sometimes it's still edible, sometimes it isn't. I get the impression they are just getting rid of the old bread from the day before which is no longer suitable for sandwiches. It's a shame, especially as the prices seem to have gone up a lot in recent years. Other than that, no issues.

Unfortunately this great cafe had gone severely down hill over he years as prices have increased at a similar rate. This isn't down to the staff who are friendly and effivient but the bosses who instruct them how to create the sandwiches. They're happy to spread the sauces and not just dollop them in the middle but you have to ask!

Come here quite often. The coffee & food are very consistent. Gorgeous beef & onion sarnies. Don't expect a speedy service through the drive-through though :(The staff quite often get the orders wrong too, so always check before leaving.

Due to the amount of cars queuing I went inside to order.I got the drinks and whilst waiting for my hot food observed a operative working in the kitchen. She was putting apple pie filling in to the pastry case..scooping in with bare hands then taking it from under her finger nails!.Surely gloves should be warn in food preparation??.

The cafe has very good service and a peaceful atmosphere, whether just meeting friends or popping in for a quick coffee. The bacon sandwiches are definitely 5 star

Go there with a couple of friends each Wednesday to this very popular place. We always sit in the conservatory at the front and enjoy a drink of coffee. We really like this place. The car park is nearly always full but I have found if you go round again you can usually see someone leaving so you can use the space they have vacated. Staff are friendly. There is a separate takeaway area also available for those who just want this without having to get out of their cars. Have had sandwiches from here on several separate occasions which were also excellent.

Usually busy, limited but interesting menu of local produce and everthing cooked or baked on site.I have been going to Merrie England for many years but I have to say the standard of food does seem to be deteriorating. Pity really because they have a good client base which will diminish if not careful

After a busy day finishing off our Christmas shopping we decided to pop into Merrie England situated in the market in Huddersfield. Both me and my husband ordered a jacket potatoe with extra fillings such as beans , cheese and tuna and paid a pricey fee of £14.70!!! When the jacket potatoes arrived we was absolutely astonished at the size of the portions in which was placed in front of us. I think a pre-school would offer more to toddlers!. When I say they were less than 5grams of each portion literally a tea spoon and no it was'nt a table spoon portion. My husband who's a Chef and works for Bradford college nearly fell from his chair when the waitress stipulated there loads on the plate!! Honestly I seriously don't know how this place still functions!! The prices are horrendously and disgustingly far to high and it's quite clear it day light robbery and I will never use this cafe yes cafe not restaurant ever again!!! I feel sorry for all the little old ladies and gentle man still using that place, when if you pop round the corner you can get a full meal including a drink and it won't bankrupt you in the process! It ruined my Christmas Eve!!! Thanks Merrie England!! Also new lesson to the waitresses never underestimate your customers!!!

£4-10p for a hot beef sandwich too much, a large cappuccino that is only really medium at most places. Quality good but the price more than I'd want to pay on a regular basis.

Ate here again today on way to the in laws. My wife and her friends have apparently ate at this place since school days, as a none-Huddersfielder I was introduced to the chain 6 years ago and must say I can fully understand why it's considered legendary in the town. The quality of ME food is very, very high. Their club sandwich is exceptional, cappuccino is superb and their cakes/shortbreads tremendous. You always get service with a smile. The location of this branch is particularly handy as you can visit while driving in or out of Huddersfield - however the popularity of the branch means that it's sometimes difficult to get a parking space. The drive-through isn't great either - slow and not to slick. But this is a great place for a feed and seems to have been so for a while.

Just been into this cafe for a couple of bacon tea cakes (baps in London) omg.... 1 silly woman serving 5 people waiting absolutely the worst service ever, woman chatting rubbish telling everyone it should be her day off. Waited nearly 20 mins for 2 of yesterday's stale tea cakes which were toasted, cold bacon from hot plate??? Weak rubbish tea in leaking cups and paid nearly £10 for the pleasure. You wouldn't pay that in central London! This is not the first time this has happened, but one thing for sure I will never go there again for a take away and neither should you. How this place gets away with it is beyond me? London boy....

One of the most efficient cafes I know; so many staff you don't have to wait long even at the busiest times. Really tasty hot sandwiches, just really enjoyed the all day breakfast tea cake with bacon, sausage, egg and tomato. Excellent!

Which ever Merrie England in Huddersfield you choose to visit you can trust to get a good cuppa the currant tea cakes are amazing and the sandwiches are good too. Their flagship roast beef still the best my son favourite is the turkey club whilst I like the prawn Mayo. We often visit and they do a coffee loyalty card bonus.

Part of a family run chain of coffee shops. This one has a `drive through` service as well as plenty of seating and parking spaces. Specialities are their hot beef sarnies and home made apple pie. Delicious! Can be busy at times making service a little slow but only at peak times. Toilets could be kept cleaner more often.

I went here on the advice of a local business, crossing the town to do so. It was worth it. I picked up a takeout sandwich & coffee. The latter was passable, the former pretty good. The staff were very friendly. It was busy (always a good sign) & the internal décor 'different'. Overall a decent place to go.

Life just isn't complete without regular visits to Merrie England, a great place to meet friends for lunch. Delicious sandwiches, cakes and coffee. And the apple pie and cream is just the best. Only slight criticism is that they don't do jacket potatoes.

I have lost count how many time I go here to get a sandwich for convenience. Every single time I have been the sandwiches ordered have been wrong. I.e if I ask without egg, that means no egg. (Just to mention an example) I am struggling to understand how a sandwich can be so complicated to get right. The staff don't listen, they shout over the counter whilst you are in the queue, write down your order incorrectly and don't seem to care. The only member of staff that is half decent is a young male, looks like the manager. He knows good customer service. Irrespective of it just being a cafe, the prices justify at least good service and correct orders.

Family meal. More bar staff needed and some did appear somewhat stressed. I ordered the rack of ribs, they tasted lovely but were no where near hot enough. Good JD sauce. The corn on the cobs were inedible, boiled within in an inch! My husband enjoyed his beef burger, but overall, for the price of food, it’s nothing special. Most of the party were just ‘erm, it was okay’. Good price on a bottle of red wine and the food came out as we ordered, we they wanted us to pay at the bar due to party size. Main male staff member greeting as we walked in was friendly.

We were so looking forward to our romantic valentine's evening. Sadly the previous reviewer has said most of it for us. Extortionately expensive, to be honest, for actually a less than mediocre meal which was not particularly enjoyable. It was obvious, from the occasional groans, the that something was very very wrong in the kitchen, even though front of house staff attemped to cover the cracks with gracious service. Also, yes it was far too cold. Have had lunch several times in this beautiful building, which have been very pleasant, although they really do need to sort out the heating problem.

After a bracing walk around part of Digley Dam this was an ideal stop off to satisfy healthy appetites. It wasn't particularly busy so my friend and I were fortunate to select a table by the window to sample views of the surrounding countryside that the area is famous for. We both chose the regular Fish & Chips, good value at £12 though smaller portions are available at £9.50. My friend's Side Salad cost £4 which I thought expensive for what he received while a side order of Mushy Peas set him back £2. I thought the drinks were expensively priced, £2.90.for a pint of Fanta Orange but we'd visited for the Fish & Chips and these were delicious so it was definitely worth the effort. The menu is quite extensive so there are plenty of alternatives to satisfy most appetites and palates. A good experience.

We didn’t have much time so rather than go ti RMT Kitchen where our friends said parking is a nightmare, they suggested we hit Toby. We were seated and drink orders were taken and then nothing more happened so eventually I went over to a waitress and ordered the Ultimate Roast Dinner Sandwich for our son (just some carvery stuff in a roll or pud basically), and carvery for the two of us. We went to get it, meat was cold as well as most of the veg, and the sandwich never came. After about 20 minutes we asked for it and it had obviously been forgotten so she rushed off and got us an Ultimate Roast Beef Sandwich which is just some beef and gravy slapped on a roll. Honest misunderstanding so no big deal. We asked for a replacement, she took away the tray, manager showed to to ask about our issue, both said it would be sorted, again nothing for another 20 minutes, and we had to ask yet one more time to get a sandwich that was sloppy, but too hot to touch, and a bowl of cold gravy. Desert was fine, but the custard with the apple pie was again a tongue burner (nuked maybe?). When time to pay came, none of this had apparently discouraged the waitress from asking for a tip. She was lucky we were leaving that day and there to burn off no longer needed GBP so she got wholly underserved 6 quid for her efforts. Overall we lost more time waiting than it would have taken us as per our friends to find parking near RMT Kitchen, and the food was absolutely not worth it.
