Gone downhill since it was princes Decided to eat in. Had to go next door to the takeaway section, not too bad of a queue. Soon as I got to the front, I was waiting well over 10 minutes to place my order that there was a queue out of the door! just because there was only one person on the till too busy preparing someone else's order who seemed to have bought the entire shop!!! Sorry but I liked it when it was princes and they had table service.

Dropped in just before closing time, we was unsure if we were able to place our order. The staff could not do enough for us and were extremely welcoming. After taking our order, we were taken to our table and within no time the fish, chips, mushy peas arrived where we were also offered a hot drink. The FOOD, STAFF, CLEANLINESS and COST was EXCELLENT. We had not visited for many years due to recently moving back into the area, we were amazed that nothing had changed and was still the best 💯……FULLY Recommend a visit to the BEST Fish & Chips in TOWN. Used to go here for a treat when we were younger wanted to sit on the wall outside like we used to but was too cold cooked in beef dripping, which still taste delicious 😋

Staff seemed to be doing their own thing in the back, the food was greasy and the mushy peas were watery - would not recommend

The food was delicious and the prices were reasonable! We both enjoyed our meals. I liked that we were able to order at the takeaway and have our food brought out to us in the seating area next door. The whole experience was great!

Best fish and chips I’ve had in a long while. Really like the take away ordering and being able to sit in the seated area. Brilliant concept, an element of restaurant without costing a fortune.

Sadly there is no service as before but you can order your from the fish shop and you can go and sit in the restaurant part and they will bring your order to you which is great...the restaurant part is kept lovely and clean...

the restaurant side is not like it should nothing comes on a plate or in cups just squashed into a takeaway box and even had to go back outside to the takeaway side to order nothing like the original prince's chippy were you was welcome with a proper service and cups and plates

Best place for a chippy dinner in Barnsley

I visited the Mermaid today with my daughter. We got a takeaway but we ate our food in the adjoining restaurant area for no extra charge. The weather was quite chilly today so we were grateful to be able to eat inside. The staff were very friendly and the food was delicious. The toilet exceptionally clean. We will definitely be vising the Mermaid again.

Enjoyed my lunch, got a table just in time before a long queue formed. Popular place.

We have eaten fish & chips across the UK. Mermaid Barnsley is 5 Stars every visit. Sadly their fish restaurant is to be relegated (energy price driven) to a beautiful shelter in which you can sit & eat your Mermaid takeaway (next door) still with bread & butter & tea / coffee. The Fish & chips has been our number one choice for years. If you happen to be in the area don't miss the experience. The management & staff are wonderful & deserve our support.

This is definitely the best chippy in the centre of Barnsley. You can sit down too. They only have table service on weekends I belive.

No waitress service on Tuesdays in restaurant use takeaway side, however you could sit in restaurant or outside to eat. Been a few timesfor waitress service later in week, large portions and caring staff. We only got small fish a chips, great value but still too much for me to eat.

Rubbish. Asked for a small fish & chips and didn't receive the chips as 'I didn't ask for them'. Paid £7.90 for small fish, breadcake, small peas and a can of pop. The chips were an extra £1.50! fish was chewy, chips were bland and peas didn't taste of anything. The woman serving just enjoys being awkward. She was also like this to another customer.

We have always had great food here. But! It's none of your staffs business who I'm ordering a kids meal for! Felt like the Spanish inquisition! I walked out and headed straight for Mother Hubbard's, a bit more expensive but gorgeous and staff lovely and helpful.Wont go again to The Mermaid.

The picture on the review site shows fresh cut chips, the chips I got with my meal were of a frozen variety, and to add insult to injury, I got a black chip! I was also told off because I hadn't eaten many chips. However, the pudding was awesome, could have eaten more.

Me and my Wife visited Mermaid Fish and Chips today for our Dinner and the food was fantastic. My Wife had the regular Fish and Chips and I had the Mermaid Special and both meals were really good value for money. The Fish and Chips were both cooked to perfection. The extra large Fish on the Mermaid special was really tasty and was a very chunky piece of Cod. The regular one was chunky too and the Chips were proper cut Chips. You get Tea or Coffee and Bread and Butter included along with Mushy Peas. The food is very fresh and piping hot. We will definitely be visiting the Mermaid Fish and Chip Shop again in the near future. I would recommend anybody who loves Fish and Chips to give this place a try.

Been coming here with my family since I was a little girl. Excellent fish & chips at great value prices. Staff & customers always friendly, It's a lovely Barnsley institution. Dad and I last visited yesterday for lunch and our cod was outstanding.

Arranged to meet my dad here for lunch yesterday My family have been coming to this restaurant for as long as I can remember.They provide freshly cooked food at excellent value for money. A lot of senior citizens eat here where they can get a three course meal and s hot drink for just over £8 . The decor has been given a fresh upgrade recently too . I highly recommend lunch at this restaurant , my cod & chips was fresh out of the frier, a beautiful piece of fish , staff are very friendly and customers who come here actually talk to each other . I'd say the Mermaid is a Barnsley institution and long may she reign.

This place is really nice except for one thing. The last 2 times I've been in I've ordered half a chicken but they haven't had any chicken. I was wondering why they have it on the menu if they have none in the restaurant.

Just short of 6quid for take away chips and fish meal deal in box.this is them put on a plate once home. 24 chips about 7 hard as hell sticks of chips in the box. Daylight robbery. A mate in brighton sent me a photo of his fish like a whale masses of chips from their local shop. Seems like mermaid cutting back to pay for refurb and the summer shutdown of 2020 this was bought 4th sept 2020 emailed branch no reply received

Been to the mermaid fish restaurant today for our wedding anniversary. Newly refurbished in the last few months, we had the pensioners special £6.95 for 2 corners which includes tea bread and butter and a choice of pudding, once again the meal was excellent, very good value for money. We will definitely be returning soon.

Travelled to Barnsley from Middlesbrough for the football and walked into town for a place to eat and thankfully came across this very pretty, clean chippie. Really glad I did! Me and my mum both had fish and chips and it was cooked to perfection. Hot, batter was light and tasty and all in all a really lovely meal. Very kind staff. Thank you!

Really tasty, affordable, homemade and fresh food. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The restaurant was very clean and tidy with nice decor making it very inviting. My mum had a pensioners special that came with a pudding, she decided to have the coconut, jam sponge and said it was lovely and tasted fresh and homemade.
