Mermaid Fish & Chips in Barnsley

Dropped in just before closing time, we was unsure if we were able to place our order. The staff could not do enough for us and were extremely welcoming. After taking our order, we were taken to our table and within no time the fish, chips, mushy peas arrived where we were also offered a hot drink. The FOOD, STAFF, CLEANLINESS and COST was EXCELLENT. We had not visited for many years due to recently moving back into the area, we were amazed that nothing had changed and was still the best 💯……FULLY Recommend a visit to the BEST Fish & Chips in TOWN. Used to go here for a treat when we were younger wanted to sit on the wall outside like we used to but was too cold cooked in beef dripping, which still taste delicious 😋

Wonderful food and fantastic service. The ladies were really friendly and very quick with our food. I've never been here before but I will definitely be going again.

Called in today for first in a while, still fabulous after all these years,first visited in 70's, Fish, chips & mushy peas ,so tasty will not leave it so long in future.

Absolutely delicious 😋, I had sausage, chips and gravy, every item was so tasty, could tell the chips were done in beef dripping and not oil, highly recommended

Thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to Mermaid fish and chips. The staff were all polite, friendly and courteous, especially the lady who was working in the seating area for whom nothing was too much trouble. The fish and chips were delicious and the portions generous. We will return. Thankyou.

The food was delicious and the prices were reasonable! We both enjoyed our meals. I liked that we were able to order at the takeaway and have our food brought out to us in the seating area next door. The whole experience was great!

Best fish and chips I’ve had in a long while. Really like the take away ordering and being able to sit in the seated area. Brilliant concept, an element of restaurant without costing a fortune.

Sadly there is no service as before but you can order your from the fish shop and you can go and sit in the restaurant part and they will bring your order to you which is great...the restaurant part is kept lovely and clean...

the restaurant side is not like it should nothing comes on a plate or in cups just squashed into a takeaway box and even had to go back outside to the takeaway side to order nothing like the original prince's chippy were you was welcome with a proper service and cups and plates

Order at counter then waitress brings food in take away trays to table .a bit wierd maybe short staffed?food nice enough ..

This is definitely the best chippy in the centre of Barnsley. You can sit down too. They only have table service on weekends I belive.

Fantastic little chippy..good service, great portions and for under £10 get fish&chips, tea/coffee, bread and a side (curry/beans etc). Nice and relaxed no rush when sat down.

Excellent, had the pensioners special, smaller then the normal, but plenty for a certain age. Sponge pudding included.

No waitress service on Tuesdays in restaurant use takeaway side, however you could sit in restaurant or outside to eat. Been a few timesfor waitress service later in week, large portions and caring staff. We only got small fish a chips, great value but still too much for me to eat.

Rubbish. Asked for a small fish & chips and didn't receive the chips as 'I didn't ask for them'. Paid £7.90 for small fish, breadcake, small peas and a can of pop. The chips were an extra £1.50! fish was chewy, chips were bland and peas didn't taste of anything. The woman serving just enjoys being awkward. She was also like this to another customer.

We have always had great food here. But! It's none of your staffs business who I'm ordering a kids meal for! Felt like the Spanish inquisition! I walked out and headed straight for Mother Hubbard's, a bit more expensive but gorgeous and staff lovely and helpful.Wont go again to The Mermaid.

Been coming here with my family since I was a little girl. Excellent fish & chips at great value prices. Staff & customers always friendly, It's a lovely Barnsley institution. Dad and I last visited yesterday for lunch and our cod was outstanding.

Food very good. Restaurant closed but you can take your takeaway into the restaurant and eat in the warm. Hot drinks available too. Great idea. Thank you

This place is really nice except for one thing. The last 2 times I've been in I've ordered half a chicken but they haven't had any chicken. I was wondering why they have it on the menu if they have none in the restaurant.

Great food with huge portions, couldn't be better. Served immediately. Offers a variety of drinks. This is the sort of look that is very inviting and welcoming. Altogether wonderful local chip shop.

Just short of 6quid for take away chips and fish meal deal in box.this is them put on a plate once home. 24 chips about 7 hard as hell sticks of chips in the box. Daylight robbery. A mate in brighton sent me a photo of his fish like a whale masses of chips from their local shop. Seems like mermaid cutting back to pay for refurb and the summer shutdown of 2020 this was bought 4th sept 2020 emailed branch no reply received

Placed an order on your website for click and collect at 2.50 took payment went to collect only to find a note on door saying only open Fridays. States on your website and Facebook page you are open today

Really tasty, affordable, homemade and fresh food. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The restaurant was very clean and tidy with nice decor making it very inviting. My mum had a pensioners special that came with a pudding, she decided to have the coconut, jam sponge and said it was lovely and tasted fresh and homemade.

Very nice fish&chips, looks to have just opened. Staff very pleasant but not quite up to speed yet, good food and reasonable price
