Me daughter and I had afternoon tea here yesterday. I'll start out with the positives... 1, The staff were Friendly 2, The building and decor is stunning 3, The prosecco was nice Now the negatives... 1, Parking is £2.50 minimum!!! Wow!!! 2, The food had been made waaaaay in advance and wasn't fresh at all. 3, The bread was dry and stale 4, The Smoked salmon brioche was a weird colour and about 2 weeks out of date by my estimations (see photo) 5,The chocolate 'mouse' was rock solid. 6, The scones where cheap shop bought 7, The butter had been spread on the bread hard so was just a thick horrible slab on the bread (see photo). 8, Staff didn't ask if our food was ok. 9, My email to the manager was ignored. Now we did use a Groupon voucher but the afternoon tea was still £24.95 for 2 people and not worth it at all. I really did expect that our food would be freshly made. It had clearly been made earlier that morning (or even the previous day) and been left uncovered. Add on the £2.50 parking charge and I feel thoroughly ripped off. It would also have been nice to have a choice of sandwich fillings and maybe a pastry or two. There are much cheaper places around which give more choice, make your food fresh and bake scones and cakes in house rather than giving cheap shop bought ones. Very disappointing.

My husband and I went here for an afternoon tea and were really impressed. The table was set out lovely and we were greeted by one of the waiting staff who was very polite. The food was lovely, even though we don't like smoked salmon, so it would have been nice if we had been given a choice of sandwich fillings. There was more than enough to fill us both and we left feeling full and satisfied.

We intentionally went to the restaurant on Saturday 1st September, having visited before and experienced good service and quality of fare. However, this time it was terrible... Upon being "welcomed" the front of house did not know if they could take walk-ins (was less then 20% occupied) eventually we got to chose our own table. Wine selected - was brought to the table and upon confirmation was left on the end of the table unopened and without ice bucket. Meal selected - Ribeye steak + seasonal vegetables, when it came to the table it was with a Caesar salad. Requested blue to rare, it was extremely tough to cut and chew. Upon asking if it was actually Ribeye, it was taken away and similar returned to table in a similar condition! Left steak un-eaten and it was not charged for. It can be no coincidence that the ownership has changed to "Britannia Hotel" and all the staff (including the chef) were extremely young and inexperienced. They clearly need a matradee to get hold of all elements otherwise this team will continue to sleepwalk into mediocracy

We attended here for our works ‘do’ last year and were impressed. I even emailed them to let them know. This year however, was a total disappointment. I asked if I could be catered for as a vegan and they assured me it wasn’t a problem. The bread tasted like the part baked type which hadn’t been heated, the soup was fine. My main course was a small pile of luke warm pasta with half a tin of chopped tomatoes and some chopped onion...... that was it!!!! Oh apart from 3 sprouts and a tiny bit of boiled carrots! To top it all, my dessert just never came!!! This surely cost about 25 pence though I had paid 25 pounds. The meat eaters meal wasn’t at all thrilling either and plates were cleared when people were still eating. I eventually got my money back but this took well over a week and I had to speak to three different managers, despite being promised that someone would contact me the next day. Needless to say, we won’t be returning.

We had some time to kill, so went into the Royal Hotel for a coffee and bite to eat. We looked at the menu cards, and the Afternoon Tea looked inviting. I went to order and was told that we had to pre-order Afternoon Teas one, or one and a half, days in advance! I pointed out there was no mention of this on the menu card and was told there was a green notice outside the main entrance explaining this. I checked, and as you've guessed, there was no green notice! I had a word with John (Duty Manager) who was alittle more conciliatory, offering to have a word with the chef on our behalf. This was all too little and too late, as we were out the door! All very ridiculous, no where else on this Planet do you have to book an Afternoon Tea in advance!

We always stay here when visiting up to hull and it's always so beautiful and clean! The food is always good and staff is helpful. However when we took my granddad up he has bad knees and it is obvious to see as he has two fake knees and walks with a limp he is over 70! They were put right out the way and they had to climb up so many flights of stairs and the place which they were going the lift didn't even go there!! I know it's not there fault however it was an convince and you could clearly see he struggled walking as it was an elderly couple. Still will be staying here as everything was lovely the bathroom was hot (a big thing for them apparently) and food was good just a shame that they felt put out and that the room position was not good and was a problem for my grandparents.

We stayed here for 2 days. The first time for 53 years! (We were married in Hull in '64 for those interested). A touch of nostalgia as we sat and watched through the restaurant windows, passengers arrive and depart on the station platform. Frozen in time it did feel like a scene from the film. The Royal is a touch jaded but that is part of its charm. Its glory days are long gone although you can imagine a Miss Haversham silently waiting, hoping her dream will become real. An unexciting menu, at OK prices. Staff courteous but not intrusive and the food unremarkable but filling.

This hotel is situated in the heart of Hull City Centre at the front of the train station. So the whole sitting in the dining area and looking out onto the train platforms reminded me of the film brief encounter lol. Everything about this hotel screams posh victorian. The decor, the silver service etc which is lovely until you hit the lift. Beyond the foyer, bars and restaurant its all a bit disappointing. The room was very compact. In fact I would say it's one of the smallest hotel rooms I have stayed in. The decor looks very tired and the room had no personality, just a view into someone elses room whos window was directly opposite. In fact when we entered our room the neighbours were watching us unpack and we very politely waved. The plus side to the room was that it was functional. Just one more thing to add about the hotel. It is expensive!! Wanted to charge me £1.40 for a packet of crisps.

Entertainment was an abba tribute act- seemingly only half of abba turned up as there were only 2 female singers who sang to a dodgy backing track. They were terrible and I have seen abba performed much better at karaoke !!! The followong disco was so dated they played agadoo and even less tastful and dated numbers!!!!! Drinks very expensive.

I've stayed at this hotel a few times in the past and you can't knock the decor. What they have done to this beautiful old building after it burnt to the ground is nothing more than outstanding! BUT.... there is no excuse for cold good. Breakfast on both days was stone cold! Surely they probe the good temperatures regularly? Obviously they don't. Then there's the room, well presented if you like a stain on your diver cover or the decoration pillows left in the window sill? The bath looked dirty but it was very badly chipped. My wife and I were in Hull for a funeral after an absence of 63 years. Our visit to this Hotel was confined to a snack lunch in the Lounge. When we lived in Hull the Royal Station Hotel (as it was then known) was looked upon as the premier hotel in the city. Now, certainly so far as the lounge is concerned, it is need of some serious money being spent in refurbishment: with the armchairs showing their padding and a general ambience of being "run down". Other than this the food was very tasty and delivered quickly. The staff were very efficient, friendly and accommodating (my wife requested an omelette that was not on the Menu and this was provided with no fuss or bother). They also gave good advice on taxis and called one on our behalf. The Lounge is not a good advertisement for the rest of the Hotel, for example it would not now be amongst the choices if we had need to stay in the City.

We live in East Yorkshire so are quite regular visitors to the bar at The Royal before catching our train home.As we had an early coach pick up, we did enquire about staying overnight, the breakfast time would have been to tight and on the showing of the service for dinner, I think we would still have been there when the next coach departed. We had a drink in the bar first, my partner noticed the Restaurant was closed (no mention of this when I phoned to book the evening before) I went to reception to enquire where dinner was being served, was told through the door next to reception.I din't know why we bothered to book, at 6.45pm there were only 2 others taking dinner. The young guy brought the menus over and just went out into the bar area and that was the last we saw of any waiting staff for 15 to 20 minutes. We both chose the soup of the day which was pea and mint, nice taste but could have done with being a little warmer. My partners choice of main was lamb chops, he asked if was possible to have seasonal vegetables instead of the noodle type stuff that it came with, but he said if that was not possible, he would have seasonable veg as a side, when the meal came it was served just as it said on the menu, no apology for no veg and no explanation. My meal choice was steak, came medium as asked for, half of it was tender the other half quite tough. I was asked what type of potato I would like, I chose chip shop style chips, all I can say is that the chef must go to way out chip shops, they were neither skinny fries (but not far off) or chunky chips, some of them had the skins still on, that is pure laziness.During this time 6 more people came in and another older waiter also joined the younger one. but the service got no better, no hard task when the total meals were 10.We waited an age, the older guy came over to ask if our sweet order had been taken, when we said no he said I will send him over to take it, probably another 5 to 10 minute wait.My partner had fruits of the forest cheesecake with very little fruit on it and by sweet was rice pudding, this came blow torched on the top, rather unusual way of serving it, at no point were we asked if our meals were ok, this is usually because they know it was not ok. We decided that to wait for coffee would have meant an after 9.30pm departure, so we asked for the bill and yes you've guessed it took an age to come.

Hi Rankinfoodie here. This is not one of those great and memorable bars: a small range of beers and wines, and not cheap. But the whole point of this bar is that you can come straight off the train and into the hotel and the bar. And that also makes it a good place when waiting for a train or meeting people. Lots of seating. Friendly enough, female friendly. Decor OK but could do with updating.

My Mum was presented with a slab that looked as if it was chainsawed from an ostrich and mine was a rolled sliver of plaice swimming in tomato soup - and it tasted like the 57 variety - with a slop of potato. Had a family meal here last night to celebrate a 21st birthday. At £35 a ticket I was looking forward to a first class meal. The starter and pudding were fine but very small portions. The main meal however was disappointing, our meals arrived at separate times and as a result, some had finished eating before others had received their meal. Our party was consisted of just eight people. The menu stated that there would be a selection of seasonal vegetables. A miserly amount of undercooked vegetables accompanied the turkey, with variations on the amount each person received. The roast potatoes were cold, un-seasoned and unappetizing.I would not visit this establishment again and would not recommend spending your hard earned cash on it.

Well laid out and nice staff, you can have croissants and cereals or a cooked breakfast,i still do not understand why hotels offer beans and not tinned tomatoes they are a must in my book

This is the second time I have been in for an afternoon tea and have left without having one. The first time was when iI met my friend and we called in only to be informed we had to give at least 24 hours notice. I tried again last week as there was a sign outside advertising afternoon tea. This time they said there was no delivery so they couldn't do an afternoon tea. I settled for tea and a scone. I can't believe they couldn't make a sandwich and cakes. After all it is a hotel what to the guest have to do to get food! When I mentioned the sign outside advertising afternoon tea the waitress said she knew about it but the manager wouldn't let her bring it in! The longe is lovely and comfortable. Also tastefully decorated. However they must lose a lot of trade but they deserve to fail if they can't get the basics right.

I liked the food but found the staff on duty rather formal - and I was never asked if I wanted anything to drink and seemed to cause some confusion as I was paying by cash for dinner. I noticed that families and men were getting much better and attentive service than I was

The food was good and well presented with a very good choice. Did not like the price of a bottle of wine at £20

As it was a "package holiday" with National Holidays, we received a menu of 3 courses and 3 options to choose from for each course. All of the options were delicious and wholesome and we were stuffed by the end of the meal! the service between courses was very speedy (arguably too fast) and we weren't left with dirty dishes in front of us for extended periods. the breakfast options were also very good.

Excellent food, especially the all you can eat buffet breakfast. The breakfast staff were on the ball and nothing was too much trouble for them. Although there were scrambled eggs on the buffet you have to ask if you want fried egg.The hotel restaurant over looks the train station platform and there is also a door that leads out on to the train station (the building that the hotel is housed in belongs to British Rail).

We stayed for two nights Thur to Sat. We were impressed by the staff throughout friendly and welcoming. When we arrived we were told they had problems with the air conditioning but could supply a fan should we want one. For the age of the hotel it was very bright. In some old hotels there seem to be dark corridors. It was clean, the food was good. A great atmosphere in the lounge. If we are in Hull again, we will certainly stay there.

We had 2 really good evening meals and 2 good breakfasts at the hotel. The food was all well-cooked and tasty, the service was always with a smile and the dining room was very pleasant. Being next to the railway station you can hear all the station announcements, but that added to, rather than detracted from, the experience. The proper dining chairs are more comfortable for sitting at table than the upholstered chairs and benches at the end of the room.

Breakfast is a very generous, serve yourself, affair. The three-course dinner menu offers plenty of options and the generous helpings are tasty and well cooked.

Food was not up to scratch for a hotel let alone for the Mercure chain putting a damper on the brand for me.

The location is very convenient with an entrance actually within the Hull train station and this is a grand old building. The furniture could do with updating but the current price is lower than it used to be so reflects this fairly...but skip all of that it's the food that is the reason this is my new favourite Hull hotel, by miles! Two courses that were innovative and both were outstandingly good. The deep fried (breaded), smoked cheddar cheese with marinated beetroot and onion compote was a wonderful balance of interesting flavours that I'd never tried and that worked perfectly so I was assuming that would be the better of my two courses, I was wrong: My main course was Pork belly, black pudding, celeriac mash and a chestnut purée. The pork was delicious (not crispy but full of flavour and the outside was sticky and delicious) The gravy was perfectly seasoned and meaty but not over powering. The black pudding was light and subtle, a perfect counterpoint to the pork and the chestnut purée added a sweet richness that made the whole dish outstanding. Perfection was achieved by the inclusion of the lovingly named 'pig stick' of crispy, salty crackling - crunchy but not hard and full of flavour. 10 out of 10! Efficient and friendly service and all of this at £21 for two courses and a good Argentinian Malbec for under £20. I have my new favourite Hull hotel and restaurant.

I have previously stayed at this hotel and experienced good service but NOT THIS TIME! It was a very hot day as we decided to go for 'Afternoon Tea' there. It was a very quiet time and we were greeted very pleasantly by the barman, as I went to order the tea. I had spotted the hotel's 'Special Afternoon Tea' offer and asked for that - the man didn't know what I was talking about and went away to ask what it was! He then only took one amount of money and then didn't seem to know what he was charging for and went to the kitchen to see what it was! Not a good advert for a supposedly 4/5 Star hotel!!! When the 'tea' came it was nothing like the advert and definitely bore no resemblance to it - pathetic! Also, the quality of the armchairs leaves something to be desired - the wooden framework, at the front, had NO PADDING left and fabric worn out! Initial appearance was good but further use and use showed the shabbiness of the furniture. Also, TOO HOT in the hotel and no fans to be seen anywhere, why no a/c? We wouldn't recommend this hotel at the price it charges, greatly overpriced and overstated.

After traipsing around Hull for a dog friendly pub I found this gem. It was quite busy for a Thursday lunchtime but my two well behaved dogs were more than welcomed. The barman got them some water and a dog biscuit each. I enjoyed a long cold Erdinger too. Would have stayed for more if I hadn’t wasted my time looking for such a pub. Nice place, good range of beers, friendly atmosphere and the staff more than helpful.

A friend suggested this little cafe. Didn't really know what to expect but loved everything I got. Service was great with the people behind the counter being very friendly.
