Mem and Laz Brasserie in Islington

I’ve always loved Mem & Laz, I’ve been going here since I was a kid. I couldn’t say the same for this visit though. We had come for a birthday lunch for My mum, the food was alright, I was not happy about being served frozen potatoes. The customer service was appalling, we had waited a while to be served and for our food to come out. The staff were very rude and made us feel uncomfortable at points during our meal. They had also messed up our order and brought the wrong food out. I’ve had better service at a busier dinner service there! At the end of our meal, I had asked for the service charge to be reduced by half, because I didn’t believe that the service that we had received did amount to that price. The staff member was very rude and said that I “had” to pay the service charge by full. I did try to explain that I wasn’t obliged to pay the service charge but the staff member was very argumentative and I didn’t want to cause any unnecessary problems. I’m very disappointed and upset about this, considering that every time I’ve visited mem and laz, it has been such a wonderful experience.

Today we made a welcome return to this Islington must visit Brasserie. I Ave never had a bad meal here and today did not disappoint. Two courses for 15.95 or three for £19.95. My pan fried chicken livers with bacon and spinach as a starter were perfection followed by chicken wings with salad, rice and home made chilli sauce. Great customer service with a good ambience.

What a great place! Went there for a surprise birthday! The decor and the service was top tier, really busy and vibrant, shout out to MUZO! Impeccable service. I will visit again definitely 👍🏾

We were very warmly welcomed the menu was amazing great choices therefore difficult to choose. All three courses were delicious good portions good wine and excellent service. Will definitely be returning.

Update - I just want to comment again on how lovely this place is. I have been here 6 times since and every time I have come they have made me feel more than welcome. Thank you to the staff they are amazing! Entrance - Very easy to find, on Upper Street just off a side road and very inviting. Food - I ordered the Chargrilled lamb chops with rice and salad and chilli sauce. They asked me how I would like my lamb chops done and I said medium rare. They were cooked to perfection, the rice was nice and fluffy, the salad was fresh & the chilli sauce was so authentic and to do die for!! My friend ordered the Mix Mezze & really enjoyed! Hot food, seasoned well & great taste! Drinks - We ordered a bottle of Pinot Grigio with a 7up as a spritzer. Very tasty!! Decor - Absolutely beautiful! It had a nice traditional feel to it! Loved it! Atmosphere - very busy but it was understandable, good vibes all around! Cleanliness - Very clean and tidy, could not fault it. Cost - £116 for the both of us which I thought was reasonably priced! Customer service - Everyone was nice, friendly & attentive. Anything we needed was done within minutes, great staff! Overall - 10/10 - the food was great, the drinks were great and the staff were even better!! I look forward to returning, thank you!

This was near our hotel and selected due to the vast menu and good reviews. It did not disappoint! As vegetarians, it was amazing to see a huge variety options. All of the food was flavourful, well presented and generously portioned. Highly recommend!

One of the best meals I’ve ever eaten!! I had the apricot glazed chicken and it was phenomenal! I couldn’t finish it as was a lot for me so I took it away as I have to taste that again an again! I’m going back again in 2 days for my dad’s birthday. I just wish I lived in London so I could go every week! Highly recommended!!

Great setting with lovely friendly staff. The food was delicious with an amazing choice which, I as a vegetarian found particularly pleasing as, there were so many vegetarian dishes to choose from. We ended our meal with a cocktail which was heavenly. As it was a beautiful warm day we were able to sit outside in the sunshine. I had a look around the whole restaurant and , was very impressed by the whole layout which, was very attractive and inviting, even the restrooms were very attractive and well thought out. Very reasonable price and well worth it. We can’t wait to visit again maybe with friends. Highly recommend

This was my third visit to this most charming of Mediterranean restaurants in Islington, London. It never fails to please. There’s a very extensive menu, and often these turn out to be low in food quality but not here! The food is delicious and of a high standard and I always feel spoilt for choice! The lunchtime deal is good value and offers a wide range of options, whether you’re vegan, vegetarian or not. On this occasion, I went for the stuffed garlic mushroom, chargrilled lamb, rice and salad, and sealed it with a sumptuous dessert of profiteroles draped with lush chocolate sauce. Yum yum! My boyfriend enjoyed his first visit here, opting for cheesy garlic bread to start, then king prawns in a tomato based sauce with rice, followed by Mediterranean style bread and butter pudding with custard. We chose the Yakut red Turkish wine to accompany this lovely food 😊 As for the service, it’s a fine balance between attentiveness and a relaxed attitude, meaning you don’t feel rushed but you’ll have attentive when you need it. And the ambience is great! It seems like we can’t get enough, so will hopefully be returning here soon!

Lovely restaurant staff is so friendly and welcoming the food is so tasty and lots of dishes on the menu definitely recommend this restaurant

I have been eating here since it opened, meaning I have seen 21 years of development and I know the customers as well as the staff.All I ever see are incredibly dedicated, charming, helpful no kind staff who treat every single customer with care and respect. The food is always delicious, they have an enormous choice of fresh and delicious food, all t reasonable prices. I hate seeing bad reviews, especially when they are written by people who think that they should be served cocktails in 1 minute and have eaten and finished their dinner in 40 minutes. I don’t know a single restaurant anywhere that is as wonderful to eat at and spend time in as Mem and Laz. Look at all the happy faces and the amount of customers who know all the staff by name…..it’s restaurant that is a part of Islington life and it always will be.

Christmas Day lunch,a family ritual for us at Mem & LazThe food is always good and tasty and the staff friendly and efficient, The seafood casserole is the best and you will be hard pressed to find a better one,Just wish the waiter could have waited until everybody had finished eating before trying to clear the plates.

Had been looking forward to having dinner out this yr there were seven of us we booked last month.We arrived at 5pm are dinner slot .We were placed in the middle part of the restaurant which is pokie and looks like the centre of the restaurants we sat down our orders were taken and we wait for our starters I had halloumi salad which was nice the others had various we all enjoyed.Now while eating the door is opening and closing every two minutes with waiters fetching and taking food and drinks in and out and cold constantly coming in.Main xmas dinner came I had beef and was expecting a roast dinner with roast potatoes what I got and I'm being exact ,,,,two slices of beef not bad bit bland two small slices of carrot, two sprouts that were very undercooked, green beans broccoli both half cooked Yorkshire pudding and new potatoes trying to be disguised as roast potatoes about 5 small ones I was in total shock at what were given nothing looked like a xmas roast. So while we are eating the colds still flowing inAnd staff looking to see if we have finished which is very off putting three of my family did not finish the food due to being undercooked. No sooner have they taken the plates there bringing the dessert I haven't even digested the main.Desert came I had to send mine back the custard was luke warm it came back the same.We are all very upset with the whole dinner I wish I had stayed home and cooked as usual and for half the price .We won't be going again and won't be recommending to anyone this will be the second time the food was disgusting I should of used my last experience and went to Toby carvery where its a real roast.SO MY XMAS DINNER WAS RUINED.

Visited on Saturday - buzzing restaurant, hadn't booked but they let us have the only free table as long as we could return it about 1.5 hours later. Unbelievable choice, had 5 different starters and mains (family of 5) and everyone was thrilled with their choices - both pasta and traditional fare. Service was great, very reasonably priced. Will definitely return, thank you.

Hard to review as we booked mem & laz cause when we arrived we were seated in a restaurant 3 doors away.!? Apparently all owned by the same company.The staff were awful we ordered drinks on arrival, waited 30 mins to get them, then waited an hour for starters, then another hour for our mains. Took 20 mins to get 3 glasses of water! The alcohol was so overpriced and the cocktails were not great! We complained to the manager who didn’t give a **** if I’m honest. AVOID IS MY ADVICEWe spent over 3 hours there! Never again!

To me this place is pretty mediocre and I wouldn't bother returning. The lunch menu is a good deal but the food quality really isn't great. I had the chargrilled halloumi salad and the seafood spaghetti. The salad was limp. The pasta was soft and mushy. The prawns were tiny and the mussels didn't taste very fresh. I also had a tiny glass of prosecco. It seems like there's a bunch of restaurants along this stretch of the road all owned by the same person. They operate out of one kitchen but serve different menus. This makes me suspicious. Obviously, I don't know what goes on in the kitchen. Maybe they have a different chef for each cuisine. But that seems unlikely, meaning they probably have their fingers in too many pies.I sat outside but from the photos the decor inside does look quite interesting.

Great med food, wonderful vibe going on between the neighbouring restaurants and the location. Mixed grill was well proportioned and tasty as well. Views nice as well 😀

My fav place in Angel so far. The ambient is very unique and authentic matches with the delicious food and cocktails. I really suggest the grill, it's really the second to none. Customer service was also incredible with that lovely people. Great place in brief. PERFECT!

Had some drinks and a nibble. My trousers got stick on a chewing gum that was under the table. They charged also the service charge which is ridicoulous. Very poor hospitality manners, disappointing.

Well lets start it’s a great vibrant area loads of restaurants busy area overflowing with customers but that doesn’t excuse poor customer service we had boxed tables for 24 people the discount which ends at 6 we got there about 5.30 it was 6.09 & not even the drinks order was completed one waiter for 24 people not enough plus the waiter told us we must be out by 7 !! My brother who was celebrating his birthday asked to see the manager he than had to go & find her himself she manager agreed we could stay till 7.30 then we had a second waitress helping take the ordering not everyone arrived on time i don’t live in the area for a start ! We were on separate tables we sat on the table next to the toilets not great people constantly walking past you or waiting outside standing next to your table nearly ! But right lets get on to the food once the restaurant had agreed we can still have the discount from the set menu the food was nice but small portions so expensive poor customer service no apologies about how slow to get drinks food etc then hurry up & get out well i wont be coming back even for a discounted price they took probably between £600 plus maybe more from the group no wow factor nice plus shame about the way it was run your not a customer just a inconvenience sorry I’ll spend my money somewhere that i feel welcomed no hello how are you doing

Been going there for. 12 years with family friends, definitely the standards have gone down, and the prices gone through the roof, ordered 2 mains which came out quite small portions, bottle of wine , 2 Irish coffees and the bill came to £97, really felt it was a rip off, sat on a small tight corner table, food was ok but get the same in cheap corner kebab shop,

1) Judgemental staff when ordering take away they got my order wrong I didn't want salad and I wouldn't have eaten it but the staff gave me a dirty look and asked me several times as though as I was a mad person trying to imply that I am greedy but yet they were getting paid for what I was ordering and they items I asked for didn't come extremely useless. 2) Staff are all rude and stupid 3) If the staff had any braincells the communication would be clear the whole point of a customer service team is that you are good at multi tasking which failed 4) The toilets are not designed properly I would prefer an automatic tap so that I don't have to touch anything ever.

I really love the veggie moussaka, it's my favourite thing on the menu. I've visited a few times before and there was always a lovely atmosphere, so can't wait to get back. Delivery was quick and food was awesome as always. Some great veggie choices.

Had heard good reviews about the restaurant. HOWEVER we arrived at our reservation for 7:30pm. Up until 10pm we hadn’t received our food. Absolutely gutted. When asked, they said the grill wasn’t working but others around us who arrived later than us had received their food, ordering the exact same as us. At 9:50 the manager told us we were welcome to leave, no apologies or explanation. I’m so upset by the customer service and cannot fathom why they would do this???

Todos los que nos sirvieron el día que visitamos fueron increíbles, encantadores como siempre, obtuve las alitas de pollo y el arroz, los amigos obtuvieron mejillones y pasta cremosa. Literalmente vivimos por ello. Nuestro camarero Noray fue genial y se involucró en nuestras bromas. Muy buenas vibraciones, sobre todo en un momento de incertidumbre, te hace olvidar por un momento y disfrutar de la buena comida. Bonita decoración también, me encanta.

Solía comer en Mem y Laz regularmente hace años cuando vivía en Londres y era solo un pequeño restaurante. . . Me sorprendió (gratamente) ver cuánto había crecido, ¡ahora tiene una enorme planta baja! ! Los entrantes eran encantadores, tuve los champiñones rellenos de ajo y como principal tenía los mejillones que vienen con una porción de patatas fritas para absorber la deliciosa salsa de vino blanco. ¡Rematado con 3 (ooops) de los daiquiri de fresa más deliciosos que he probado! ! La única decepción fue el filete de cordero de mi marido, que era muy duro y demasiado cocido. El personal era encantador y muy amable. Fácilmente podría haber sido un 5 estrellas.

Mi pareja y yo fuimos a Mem and Laz ayer y, sinceramente, todo estaba súper sucio. Había telarañas sobre mi cabeza, lo que significa que no hay limpieza exterior, así que Dios sabe lo sucio que está el interior. Las paredes estaban sucias y el libro en el que trajeron la cuenta era tan viejo y endeble que parece un libro de bacterias esperando mi cuenta.

Gone down hill.. This is our regular brunch place. We had salmon yesterday & the portions seems to be getting smaller. The size of salmon could barely fit inside your palm. What used to be a generous place has become a total disappointment!

My friends and I have dinner and cocktails at Mem and Laz often. We are always very impressed with the food/menu and the service. It is such a great place to dine out. All round 10 out of 10 👍🏼

I have visited this place almost third time now and I loved the food and the service. I always believe the service is as important as the food. Noray amplifies your dining experience with this helpful attitude. Their mixed grill is a must to to try!

really bad used to be really nice but really gone down hill . roast potatoes are new potatoes still got skin on were vile . lamb came with mash no vegetables. I thing they have changed hands and not for the better

It saddens me to leave such a poorly rated review, as this is one of my favourite go to dining eateries. I however feel compelled to do so, as on my most recent visit (Friday 13th March) witnessed one of the kitchen staff visit the ladies toilet, spend a great deal of time in there and then leave without washing her hands. She then went straight to the kitchen area and no doubt, to preparing food.Being at the height of a pandemic and witnessing such unsanitary hygiene practices, is unacceptable. The manager really needs to ensure that staff not only follow basic hygiene principles but take extra precautions during such volatile times.

Now I’ve had more sublime Middle Eastern food, but this was after the ballet, easy, and actually we both enjoyed it. Polite service, even though they didn’t tick our booking off, and a nice place to sit.

Went here before a concert with no preconceptions, and was presently surprised. The wife had suggested the usual suspects, Sushi, poncy places where there's more focus on making the food look nice than filling me up with some good nosh.We each had a Starter, a main and a Desert - all were huge portion of scrumminess, the fact the restaurant give off a homely vibe just made me reminisce of the good old days occasionally going to Restaurants with my parents.Price was amazing too, well done guys, we will be back for sure.

Really enjoyed my meal, great selection of delicious food however for a vegan friend the choice was none, waiter couldn't even advise a suitable dish.I think they should put together a separate page in the menu and list some vegan options in case of mixed group of people.

My wife and I went here today with her sister and her partner to celebrate sister in laws birthday. She is a regular as she lives not too far away, and having sampled the wares, I can see why she is! Firstly, the service was excellent. It was friendly, prompt and nothing was too much bother. Secondly atmosphere was excellent as was the decor, and having been three times to Turkey it feels as though a small part of it has been transported to North London. Then of course, the food. Simply superb. I had stuffed mushrooms for starter which were beautiful and rammed with mozzarella and garlic and were just lovely. For main course I had sautéed seafood which consisted of squid, prawns, cod, salmon and muscles all cooked to perfection served with rice and there was plenty of it. My dessert consisted of bread and putter pudding with custard, not very Turkish I know, but nonetheless delicious. My wife passed on a starter but had grilled chicken as a main course with chips and she reported it to be lovely. Again there was lots of it. Her Chocolate ice cream dessert was again generous in its size. The bill was also pleasing, coming in at £107 for four of us which included service charge and drinks and this topped off a very pleasant visit. I hope to come back at some point despite the fact we are well over an hour away, high,y recommended.

Fuimos a ver un espectáculo cercano y pensamos en visitarlo después para comer. Absolutamente maravillosa comida. Pedimos espinacas y ricotta Trangles, pizza y algunos otros platos. La comida estaba absolutamente deliciosa. La pizza era como una verdadera pizza italiana al horno. Todos los platos eran geniales con su ensalada especial fría. Le he dado 4 estrellas porque el servicio nos pareció bastante lento y tuvimos que perseguirlos para nuestro pedido. Defo volveremos a visitar de nuevo.

I have eaten here once before, they do the best king prawns and rice. Also the vegetable moussaka was delicious as was the creme brûlée. Lovely place, if you have mobility issues book a table on the ground floor.

family meal week before Christmas. book table glad we did as it was very busy. surprised with the size of the restaurant very large 2 areas on ground level and big area down stairs. was worried service would be bad as it was very busy. but no . good service . good menu. food very good 5 in our party all happy with there food.

...and it didn’t disappoint. Started with the mix mezze appetizer to get a taste of what was on offer. Could have made a meal of it. For mains, we ordered moussaka and spinach wraps. The moussaka was a very generous serving stuffed with yummy veggies. Finished off with the very best baklava I have ever had. Not too sweet, light and tasty. Delicious.

Booked for a party of 14 people. Be aware that if they give you a set menu it will be more expensive to select your dish from it compared to the normal extensive menu. Not sure why they feel that this is OK? Point 2. despite service you are forced to pay service charge and large party were told that they would not be sold any drinks because they believed that the service charge would not be paid as it had been questioned previously. Point 3. seabags bland, burger no trimmings, rather basic in quality but i think the lively atmosphere keeps people coming.

I recently celebrated my birthday with some friends at Mem and Laz. I booked out the lovely stone-wall room with a long table - an amazing setting to have a big group of people, it allows you to have privacy/not feel that you are disturbing other diners.

We have been going to Mem & Laz for Christmas Day lunch for a number of years.

Three of us turned up on a busy Friday, we were given a table upstairs.

The decor was so lovely here, and they had some music playing in the background. I had the mixed grill and it was really good! I don't usually like chicken breast, but theirs was good. Their chilli sauce isn't that spicy tbh, but still full of flavour and great with the rice. Would definitely come again

Have been coming to this restaurant for 20 years now and absolutely love it! Had our branch Christmas party there last night and was such a success... all the staff so friendly and hospitable and the service was excellent as always! Sonya was very patient with our large party booking this week with few cancellations and dealt with it professionally and calmly! Thank you for being so great! All orders were perfectly served and food was glorious! Thank you also to Owner, Mem who always gives our office staff a warm welcome!

The food was amazing especially when you take into consideration how massive the venue is. From the outside it is very deceptive but when you enter the second door it's huge!! There's also a downstairs dining area. The food and customer service was amazing. Because we were taking long we were 7, they offered us a shot of Ameretto each which was very nice and despite it being closing time we didn't feel rushed. Will deffo go again!

I’d heard really good things about this place so was really excited to try it. Unfortunately it was a big disappointment. We had a main mezze which was meant to be ‘13 mezze dishes’ as it said on the menu. When it arrived it was 6 small portions of typical things like hummus and tzatziki. We also ordered a mixed grill expecting what you get in a typical Turkish restaurant - a huge platter of grilled meat. What arrived was tiny as well. We were so disappointed - based on the previously good reviews this place must have changed management recently. We were so disappointed and won’t be returning.

Visited for lunch while attending The Country Living Christmas Fair nearby. Great Mediterranean selection and the option to have starters as mains. There were 5 of us and we all thoroughly enjoyed our choices. I started with hummus and pitta and then chose salmon with vegetables and roast potatoes. Both my choices were delicious and the starter potions are large so very filling

Took my sister for a dinner date. We sat outside on the pavement on a warm summers evening. Excellent food and amazing service. Highly recommended as a place to eat and have cocktails.

We went there with a friend for dinner, very good food. I had the fried duck which was on special, delicately cooked with a mango sauce! Friendly staff, very good value for money.

I like it here, came for dinner at around 6.30pm, the restaurant is always busy with a constant stream of people coming in. The staff are great and the food is always excellent Looking forward to my next visit

I went there with some friends. I had a lovely experience. The staff were friendly and attentive. The mussels in the cream sauce was divine, so garlicky and fresh onion. It comes with chips. For starters I had the grilled squid salad which was tasty too. I would defo go back on a date or with friends.

The restaurant is big and the staff are friendly. I love the food its simply delicious with a variety of choice and the portions are good too.

My girlfriend had been here several times before. So she knew it was good. I have to concur, what a beautiful establishment, great menu ,fine service. All in all a wonderful experience.

Great place if you like fresh and delicious food! The restaurant itself is very cozy and nicely decorated. All the food we had was to a very high standard. Cooked as it supposed to be in Turkey. We ordered a lot of meze and some main course all was very delicious. Highly recommend this place.

My main issue with this restaurant was the service. The food was as the title suggests, mediocre at best, but the overall dining experience was terrible. Firstly, the person who took my order 2as just to 'touchy feely' for my liking. There really is no need to touch me when taking my order, others may like that, but I definitely do not.

I have just moved in round the corner and stumbled across Mem & Laz after a full day of moving. We turned up quite late but they were quick to seat and serve us. The most attentive, friendly and smiley staff I have experienced in ages! The food menu is massive but what we all had was delicious and it tasted so fresh and authentic. The overall experience was honestly great and my sister and I will now end up here ideally once a week for dinner! Shouts to the staff for being so great, we’ll see you soon!

This was my second visit to this restaurant and just as the last time, brilliant food and great service and value for money.

Popped in here on the of chance Saturday early evening and got a table. Lovely vibe in here and actually quite cosy! Staff who served us were very polite. Had a mixed sharing meze to start and was very yummy! Hubby had the kleftiko and mash and it was enormous and delicious I had sautéed fish platter and also delicious! Both had chocolate cake for dessert and no complaints! Red wine and a lovely candle on table made this a lovely cosy meal! Recommend

The kebab experience has become as pervasive as the pizza one, or the sushi one because the world has become a smaller place. But people travel extensively now and can distinguish between the real thing and something that is out of a box or a defrost. Ae Mem and Laz , you can close your eyes and savour the tastes and completely forget you are in North London as the delicious dolma transport you to a lokanta in Izmir.

The type of food is Mediterranean and the quality was very good. There was a good range of dishes to choose from and the place was quite full on a Thursday evening, so best to book in advance to be certain of a seat.

Comida buena y en cantidad. Lugar muy agradable y trato amable. He ido en dos oscasiones, una con amigos y otra con familia y niños y muy bien las dos veces. Recomendable 100% si se esta cerca para comer / cenar.

We were on the way to a show at the King's Head Theater. We stopped by for a quick meal before the show. The service at the restaurant was friendly and prompt. The food was excellent.

Pedimos una entrega de hombres y holgazán. Pedí una hamburguesa, la cual pedí que me prepararan bien ya que estaba embarazada. Cuando llegó la hamburguesa, era rosa. Llamé al restaurante y me dijeron que estaban muy ocupados para atender mi pregunta y fuera de teléfono hacia abajo.

The atmosphere is good, the food is amazing from start to main to dessert. My fourth time here and I have recommended this property to all my friends and family and will continue to do so.

Tuvimos una gran cena aquí. El lugar parece que será pequeño, pero se abre a un laberinto de vibraciones de morrocán de estilo mediterráneo. La comida era muy buena relación calidad-precio comida turca, y el servicio era bueno. Llegaron como parte de un grupo y parecían tratarlo bien.

Food was good, came out fast and well priced however service was poor. Small things like we ordered a large bottle of water, got given a small one but still charged for the large and I had asked to swap the rice in my dish to chips but it came with rice anyway and took 20 minutes for the chips to come. My friend ordered meatballs and pasta, when they came we realised they were lamb meatballs (not stated anywhere on the menu), we asked if we could swap the dish as we were unaware and she doesn’t like lamb - the waitress argued that it was our fault we didn’t say she didn’t like lamb (although the menu didn’t say there was lamb in the dish so why would we say?) but she called a manager over who was very helpful and friendly and swapped the dish. Throughout the meal the waitress kept knocking into our chairs while we were trying to eat, again only a small thing.

Daily special Fillet of lamb was more like fillet of fat! Roast potatoes were stale and had to be swapped for rice...did not enjoy or finish meal but paid to avoid embarassment to group. Compulsory service charge added insult to injury.

We have come to Mem & Laz for the last few years for our family Christmas lunch.

this was my second year having a Christmas dinner in a large group and would never come back again the service was so slow waited for an hour for starters main was not that good I think the turkey was processed not fresh sliced some complained of the veg being hard then waited nearly an hour for ice cream also we had 1 gluten free meal that wasn't ready would not recommend to anyone and at the end even tried to give us the bill without our deposit taken off.

Pre-booked Christmas meal with a large group of friends. Food was pre-ordered at time of booking and was very good.

We really enjoyed our meal at this Brasserie. Excellent choice of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. Well priced with good service. Food was very tasty, and arrived quickly.

Terrible service, unclean surroundings and a thoroughly unpleasant experience. I will never be returning.
