Tasting menu with wine flight. Exceptional throughout, with fantastic staff. Somalier is a master of her craft.

This was our first visit to Meltons, following recommendation from friends who have been going for years. We had an early evening dinner before the theatre, so we were under a bit of time pressure. We had let the restaurant know at the time of booking and they did everything to accommodate an amazing meal within the hour we had available. Next time we visit, we will definitely allow longer and enjoy the full tasting menu, although the three course menu was really fantastic, and came with little surprise tasters too. It was great value at £80 per head. The staff were all very knowledgeable, friendly, efficient and knew the food and wine menus inside out. Really highly recommend.

Fabulous food and outstanding service. The food was as good as that I've had in a Michelin starred restaurant, and deserves to be recognised as such. The vibe is fine dining in a relaxed neighbourhood restaurant. The service was attentive without being fussy or pretentious. Our waitress (whose name I didn't catch) was excellent, taking time to explain each dish. We had to leave early due to a family emergency and the team couldn't have been more accommodating. We will definitely return to Melton's next time we are in York.

We returned after a superb meal a few years ago, slightly worried it may not be quite as excellent as we remembered. We needn't have worried - it is still excellent! Lovely staff, who were knowledgeable and friendly and superb food. We especially appreciated the efforts to seamlessly accommodate my wife's gluten free vegetarian requirements. If only we lived nearer to York than Devon!!

Visited last night, we were warmly greeted and seated, offered water for the table and presented with a variety of menu's ( tasting, short, short wine and full wine list) we had pre-decided we were going for the tasting menu with wine flight. The restaurant was comfortably busy, but we were given the perfect amount of attention. The tasting menu and wine pairing were spot on. All dishes and wines were appealing and tasty, we even tried our first "orange wine" we were very impressed with the quality of food, and the knowledge and approachability of front of house. We won't go into great detail regarding the dishes as no one wants a spoiler, but every dish was worth the visit. We have added ourselves to the mailing list, and have recommended to our family and friends. We will definitely visit again.

The food was and always is incredible. We had the tasting menu with the wine pairing and it just made the meal. The service is always fab. One of our favourite places to eat.

I don't want to be totally honest about our evening at Melton's because everyone will then want to go there but it is only fair to say what a wonderful evening we had. It was great to have a choice of a tasting menu with lots of dishes and one with just a few. I find tasting menus too much but we were able to have a 3 course meal with amuse bouche and other tasters. Everything was delicious and the service friendly and efficient. Lucy's wine advice could not be bettered by any sommelier.

We’ve probably been here 5 times now since we moved to York and we always have to tasting menu with paired wines and it’s always a mega winner. Not a place to go to over-frequently as it’s not cheap and I think it would be a shame to have it feel samey. Because the actual experience is amazing. The wine pairings are unconventional and really work and the flavours and presentation and attention to detail in all the dishes is first rate. Highly recommended

We chose the tasting menu with accompanying wine. Absolutely superb! The food was incredible, complimented by fantastic wines. The staff were so friendly, very knowledgeable about the menu and wines. One of the best meals we have ever had, I would highly recommend.

Absolutely fantastic meal . We had the three course menu option which also came with canapés , an amuse bouche and lovely bread. Every course was imaginative and delicious and the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Thoroughly recommended!

What amazing food! Definitely one of the best meals we’ve been lucky enough to enjoy, if not the best! We had the pescatarian tasting menu and every course was absolutely delicious. Perfect service too, all the staff were very friendly and we felt very welcome and looked after. The highlight of our stay in York, thank you so much for having us.

Meltons has been on my radar for a long time and we finally went last night for our anniversary. We went a little early so there were only a few tables in when we got there but by the time our first canapés had arrived it was full all bar one or two tables. From start to finish the food was incredible, we got the Short Tasting menu and it was fantastic. The initial canapés were actually one of my favourite parts, that squid ink crack with whipped fish roe and Yuzu gel is one of the nicest things I have eaten hands down. It goes without saying you don’t expect to be blown away by bread and butter but don’t be fooled. The in house baked bread paired with brown butter is truly delicious. Naturally, we finished it all. The staff were very knowledgeable and introduced every plate and gave their own little flair with each description, which made the evening that little bit more special! For mains we had the Pan fried Halibut and the Dry aged Steak, the balance of texture and flavour on the plates was perfect. The Blackberry and Meadowsweet dessert was plated in a way that I didn’t want to eat it it was art! I said how good it must feel to put a plate out that looks so beautiful. It was £80 for the short tasting menu (without drinks) but if you have a special occasion coming up the food will not disappoint. My only (incredibly minor criticism) was I think some gentle background music, would elevate the atmosphere even more. The restaurant was decorated in a lovely festive way and I can see us lining up our next special visit!

Everything was great about this place and well-priced considering what you get. Deservedly has Michelin status based on the food alone and would happily go again. Great atmosphere and ambience, we spent nearly 4 hours here, and it flew by.

Food was exceptional and the service equally exceptional. The staff were friendly and provided great insight into the ingredients and complimentary drinks. If you are looking for a great restaurant experience I would recommend highly.

From the moment we entered the building we felt immediately relaxed, the atmosphere was just right, and the staff were all so welcoming and friendly. The food here is out of this world, Michelin star worthy without a doubt, and I feel qualified to say that having experienced many meals at 1,2 and 3 star restaurants. We cannot wait to come back when the taster menu changes and I highly recommend Meltons for a cosy night with your partner, family or friends - it’s relaxed and not stuffy but has a wonderful air of finesse - the wine pairings were also very good! Visited October 2024 - party of four. We have been going to Melton’s on and off for about 30 years. It has always been very good and at our last visit this October the food was exceptional. We absolutely love it here. Definitely a must go for fine dining in York. Prices are so reasonable for a tasting menu and the service is so friendly. Would recommend to anyone. Food is beautiful and so tasty.

This place is a must. If you go to York make sure you make a booking for this restaurant. The food is beautiful. Some of the best food myself and my partner have ever had. We enjoyed every course. The service was excellent too. Each member of staff knew everything about the food they were serving. Service was quick but not rushed. We shall certainly visit again. 10/10

Fantastic food and a fantastic service. They managed to fit me in for my anniversary meal even after I messed up the reservation date twice. The staff are lovely people and are always polite and smiling. The food is quite the treat and is a lovely experience in itself. I would recommend the Tasting Menu. It is very clear how this restaurant earned their Michelin Star and AA Rosettes and kept them. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Seasonal food, creative and intricate dishes with complex and complementary flavours. Friendly, attentive, and professional staff.

Fantastic food with warm and friendly service

We dined here yesterday evening and opted for the taster menu with wine flight. Absolute delight from start to finish. Personal favourites were the salt beef collection paired with a robust yet silky Moldovan red (who knew?) and a sensational pudding combination of pickled blackberries and almond cakes paired with a gooey, unctuous muscat. The food was outstanding and the sommelier was passionate and knowledgeable, introducing each pairing with real vim. Lovely comfortable atmosphere and great value for money. Highly recommend for a birthday treat!

Definitely the best fine dinning in York imho. Independent, well established, family run, inspirational seasonal menus, local produce, and an all round good value experience.

We stumbled upon this restaurant thanks to the recommendations from the Michelin guide and decided to stop by during our day in York. What an incredible surprise! The restaurant is absolutely charming, and the food was simply outstanding, with even vegetarian options to suit everyone. A huge thank you to our hostess, who was exceptionally kind and made our experience unforgettable. Also a big bravo to the chefs as well! A must-visit spot for food lovers if you're in the area!

We found this restaurant on the York Michelin guide. We expected something good, but it was even better than we expected. Excellent food, the owner of the place who served us was professional, gentle, discreet… a charm. The quiet atmosphere with very pleasant background music. Finally, I recommend this magnificent restaurant for its very pleasant atmosphere and its exceptional cuisine. Their hazelnut butter is delicious!!

Great tasting menu, and lovely that while some of the table wanted the full on experience the rest could choose a la carte as they wished.

After finding Meltons via the Michelin guide, I had high expectations and I am glad to say they exceeded these by a long way. We had the tasting menu and my guests partnered with the wine flight. Every course was incredibly well composed and delicious. It is the best meal I have had for a long time and cannot fault any part of the experience. Although the meal was not inexpensive, it felt like a real treat and I thought it was very good value for money. The service was excellent and the ambience was spot on. Can’t wait to come back now the menu has changed season again ❤️

My all time favorite restaurant: always a delight.

It’s a little restaurant that serves very good food. I was there for lunch with my son and we wanted to do fine dinning. We had a two course meal in the short menu and the food was just exquisite. I think the price is rather high but they really deserve it. Enjoyed our visit here.

An excellent lunch with our daughters trying the tasting menu and wine flight. Food was fantastic. The wine was excellent and the waitress as well as the owner Lucy really looked after us. It was a bit quiet at lunchtime which was surprising but still a great meal.

Absolutely amazing food and hospitality. We dined here to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary yesterday and had the 7 course tasting menu with the wine flight, Each course was an explosion of flavours on the tastebuds and so beautifully presented. Lucy’s knowledge of wine is second to none, and the paired each drink with each course was perfect. Melton’s is our favourite hidden little gem only a stone’s throw away from city.

This restaurant exceeded our expectations. The quality and presentation of the tasting menu was outstanding. An explosion of taste, texture and colour. Although we chose not to have the accompanying wine we enjoyed a bottle of Lebanese Blanc de Blanc. The ambiance of the surroundings felt both elegant and luxurious. Highly recommend Meltons for that special lunch or dinner.

Our first visit to Meltons in York. From the moment your walk in your greeted we a friendly welcome. Promptly sat and, presented with water and the drinks/wine menu which, was very extensive. The lady who owned it is very knowledgeable on wines and we opted for a French Sauvignon which was perfect. Probably one of the best wines I've had. Opted for a 2nd bottle to take rest away but, it got drunk of course. Presented with the menu and we opted for the Tasting Menu, the presentation and popping off flavours and textures was amazing. We were there for 3 hours taking our time and enjoying all Meltons has to offer. The lady owner also chatted to us about their background, my choice as I love to hear a back story. Staff are not intrusive but certainly was fabulous service. We will be back. You can certainly see they have owned it for 30 years as a family, very classic and not pretentious as some high end places can be. I miss some of the restaurants from the late 80's to mid 2000 that where very classic sadly no longer open. Also looking forward to trying their other business Walmgate Ale House and it's restaurant The Chopping Block

First time dinner at this high reputation restaurant. Food, Wine Flight and Service are indeed excellent. The atmosphere and decor improves as the night draws in and the restaurant wraps itself around you. As good as Roots and Skosh. Expensive, yes but certainly worth it. We will be back

My daughter has lived in York for 4 years and we have been meaning to visit Meltons for ages. We finally made it on her last night in York before moving away! And we regretted not coming sooner. Everything was perfect- the food , the wine , the service. We liked in particular the little crudités, amuse bouche and homemade breads and whipped butters we were offered before our starters even arrived. Someone in the kitchen is very skilled for sure! The food was delicious - every course but especially our desserts. We will be back if and when we return to York to visit.

This is the second time we have visited Meltons, the first being one of the best meals we have had! It has been a fair few years ago now and we keep seeing their food on Instagram, so thought we would arrange another trip up to York specifically to go back to Meltons! We have now been to a number of Michelin starred restaurants since, however I am so pleased to say Meltons is still up there with our best meals to date. Lucy and her team are very welcoming and very informed about the food (and wine in Lucy’s case) they serve, and the kitchen do an amazing job of serving some beautiful looking and deliciously tasting food! Our second meal was as nice as our first, keep up the awesome work guys, the value for money for the quality of food and wine is Amazing 😀

The owners were absolutely lovely, and my partner and I were blown away by the tasting menu with wine pairing. Wine food and wines were both daring, and very well matched. One of the best restaurants I’ve been to, and a lovely unassuming and casual atmosphere.

Went to Melton’s as a special treat for two people. Had two tasting menus, one meat and one vegetarian, and wine pairing with both. The food was fantastic, and the wines were individually paired to whether you had meat or vegetarian. Everything just felt like there had been real care and passion behind it all. Would go back again.

Fabulous restaurant with exceptional service, the food was unbelievable and they also had a gluten free menu which was great as well. Couldn't recommend this place enough, an absolute Gem out of the way and somewhat of a York institution.

Fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere. Small portions (of course) but absolutely amazing flavours - and you do feel full by the end of the evening. A classic fine dining experience - visually appealing dishes, well presented by knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Easily the best fine dining restaurant I’ve been to. Intimate setting, very relaxed and homely, while keeping the food delicious, the tasting menu surprising and on point at every turn. Would recommend the wine pairing flight, it’s worth the extra buck. Everything on the menu is seasonal and fresh, and cooked by award-winning chefs. I’m already counting the days until I can go back to Melton’s.

One of the best (if not THE best) dining experience we have had. The food is utterly incredible and so worth the price. I’m not a fan of fine dining usually, but it felt relaxed enough to be comfortable. The staff are very welcoming and informative. The food is out of this world, the thought put into every element of every dish is commendable. Could not recommend this enough for a special occasion! We will be back!

It was birthday weekend and one with a zero in it! It is a small intimate restaurant with a short menu.Lucy and the team were fabulous even double checking ingredients to ensure dietaries were met. From the delicious canapes to the wonderful chocolate delice this was cooking of the highest order The wines and service were top notch I even was able to make a wish with a candle accompanying the petit fours This was a memorable evening Thank you

We had the 3 course menu, but it was so much more! The canapes were three taste sensations, each one with texture and flavour. My husband 'hates' goats cheese but the beetroot macaroon won him over! The amuse bouche was wonderful with so many bits of deliciousness. Everything else was just as good, but I think you can tell that we were bowled over. Service was friendly and helpful so we had a really great time. Thank you, Meltons!

Absolutely fantastic restaurant on the outskirts of York city centre. The restaurant is small in size and has an intimate setting. The food is fine dining without being pretentious, the staff are friendly, down to earth and knowledgable on both the food and drink options. We did the tasting menu with the wine pairing which I would highly recommend - the flavours and presentation were fantastic.

Round of applause. Fantastic food, great wine pairings and top class service. Loved it. Special mention for the smoked eel and white wine course, which was an amazing pairing, but all courses were superb. I’ll be heading back.

This is a real gem! We were looking forward to a good meal, but we had no idea how good the food would be, how good the wine list would be, how good and also how friendly the waiting staff would be, and how lovely an atmosphere we would find that its owner still maintains, It is small, it is informal in atmosphere and not pretentious in any way. It is a place to celebrate an event or to celebrate food and to celebrate just being alive! From the first canape, through the delicious bread, the fine asparagus and stuffed morels and the cod dish that my husband declored to be one of the best fish dishes he has ever eaten. Book, plan and enjoy!

I was given a birthday voucher for Melton's to use whilst in York for a long weekend. We went for dinner last Saturday and arrived for our 7.30pm booking to be given a choice of the remaining two seat tables by a very friendly and welcoming member of the team. My daughter had arranged a bottle of fizz to get us going, which was a lovely surprise. Some complimentary canapes arrived - a beetroot macaron, a beer croustade with venison, and a light-as-a-feather fishy cracker - all absolutely divine! We were then presented with an amuse bouche - a splendid cauliflower concoction that was as good as I've ever had. The flavoured butters and bread were also exceptional. On to the menu proper - all delivered, and expertly explained, by Harvey with an evident passion for the food - the starter was a stuffed morel with confit chicken wing, white asparagus and wild garlic - such a clever combination of flavours which worked superbly. The main was the most flavoursome piece of beef, salt aged, with kohlrabi, roscoff onion and mustard leaf - and was delicious. We opted for the well chosen cheese course, and were presented with an excellent selection of 5 cheeses with a mix of crackers. The finale was an extraordinary dessert of forced rhubarb with spiced pain perdu, blood orange, marscapone, and yoghurt. It was absolutely spectacular! The flavour and texture combinations were amazing. The team at Melton's have a mention in the Guide Michelin, but it is surely only a matter of a short time before their culinary excellence is rewarded with a star.

Fine dining without the mega budget. Drinks are particularly fair value and Lucy, the owner, is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable sommelier. This place should have at least 3 rosettes and we've definitely had worse meals from Michelin star restaurants. For under £100 you get a 7 course tasting menu, and every dish was picture perfect (see pics) and beautifully balanced. My favorite was the beef with Roskoff onion's and 3 purees: horseradish heat, a smooth something (celeriac?) and a finely chopped pickle? And a slice of salt baked kohlrabi. The staff were running up and down the stairs with the food going great guns. They seemed like they enjoyed their work and we're a great team. Lovely old house as well. Reserve weeks in advance.

Exceptional experience! Cosy little restaurant although not cramped. Very comfortable with good ambience. Welcoming , friendly and very professional service. Tasting menu packed with incredible flavours. Beautifully presented. The smoked eel is a triumph. Wine paring well worth the money - served with great descriptions which are given with knowledge & enthusiasm. I must mention our table close to service area and kitchen - which were so quiet & not a worry when you see how they operate. I could see the KP / assistant who washed up with care and appeared to show passion for this job. A superb experience and would not hesitate to highly recommend. A must go back experience. Booked having read many really great reviews and the food is good service a little bit lacking being asked if we wanted the dish explained on service seems odd for what is trying to be fine dining music in background was on a loop and strange choices but as I say the food is good but not exceptional good choices of wine just felt a little underwhelmed overall for the price of the tasting menu

Certainly the best dishes we had in York were at Meltons Restaurant with Chef Calvin Miller and joint owner Lucy Hjort. Cold evening walk to the other side of York from where we were staying and very nearly called to cancel and eat more locally - what a stupid thing to do that would have been. Brilliant cooking and presentation with friendly service and a warm atmosphere. The dishes we had included: Morel stuffed with mushroom, marinated and roast white asparagus and wild garlic. North Sea cod, jersey royals and smoked pike roe sauce. Forced rhubarb, spiced perdu, blood orange mascarpone and yogurt. An interesting wine list created by someone with skill and knowledge at reasonable prices. Do your taste buds a favour and go there. Thank you to the team for rounding off our week in York with such quality.

Excellent dining experience at Melton’s! The food was truly Michelin Star worthy. Each dish was perfectly sized for the flavours it delivered. Great texture too. Appreciated the fact that the waitresses knew the dishes well and could explain them. Truly worth a visit and every dollar spent.

We live in York, this is our 5th visit. Meltons is the best restaurant in town by far and is fabulous on all levels. Food off the scale with such care and attention to detail Staff friendly, welcoming and knowledgable and attentive without being intrusive.

This place is so good. Only a short walk from the city centre, lovely friendly staff and not a bit stuffy. All the food (and matching wines) were delicious, to the extent where it was impossible to decide which course was the best. We are still talking about it (and telling people) two months later.

We had a fantastic meal at this restaurant, outside the hectic centre of York. The food was Michelin star quality and the service was friendly, well informed and attentive. We turned up without a reservation early on a Saturday lunchtime and were lucky to get a table cause it was nearly full by the end of service. We had three courses and a half bottle of wine. The canapés (3 each) and the amuse bouche were delicious and generous. Then the rest of the courses were all fabulous - tasty and beautiful. An unexpected gem in suburban York. It's not cheap but this sort of quality takes time and skill. In terms of value for money it's a bargain.

Lovely restaurant. Visited today with my wife and daughter and we had a great time. Very good service and better food than in some Michelin starred restaurants that we have been to.

The minute we walked in the door we knew it was going to be great. Very friendly staff. The food was awesome! Portion sizes perfect! We had the a la carte menu. Everything was cooked to perfection. The space between courses was judged just right. Not to short that you felt rushed and not too long that you were getting annoyed. The owner was lovely and all the staff were obviously happy and worked well as a team. We can’t recommend this restaurant more highly.

WoW what an absolutely lovely way to spend a relaxed Thursday evening in York. This is a restaurant that has been on my culinary wish list for a very long time, tonight the wait was over. The restaurant had just the right ambience without being too busy, the food and service were both flawless, we couldn’t have asked for more. Having been very lucky over the years to have experienced some very fine dining kitchens, I would say Melton’s holds it own, without the clinical service some establishments offer. The welcome and service was excellent and the food from the tasting menu sublime, absolutely the best desert of rhubarb I have ever had! Superb! Thank you to the chefs and front of house for a fantastic meal, well worth the journey from Scotland just to eat here, thank you! We will definitely return when back in York.

The food and experience in Meltons was amazing. The wine paring was great and informative. We couldn’t choose a favourite course as they were all lovely. This our second vist and we will definitely be back!

This was our first visit to Melton’s restaurant but it certainly won’t be our last. From the moment we arrived we received a very warm and friendly welcome and as we were the only people there we had our choice of table. The restaurant filled up quickly though and there wasn’t an empty seat, which says a lot. We had opted for the tasting menu together with the wine flight. The food was absolutely delicious and very well presented with lots of elements to each dish. The staff were excellent at describing each course and were very knowledgeable about the dishes and the ingredients. The wines had been paired with each course and they were very good and complemented the food perfectly. We were not rushed at all through our courses and the whole evening was a lovely experience. The restaurant is not at all stuffy, it is just a perfect little place to treat yourself to some exceptional food and wine in a warm friendly atmosphere. We will definitely return.

My wife and I had an amazing time at Meltons Restaurant! Our £70 meal treated us to some seriously delicious appetizers and amuse-bouches as well as the 3 courses. The seafood and desserts, was absolutely fantastic. The staff were friendly and really knew their stuff when it came to the food. Excellent wine list also (with the wine at the right price). Overall, it was definitely one of the best dining experiences we've ever had

Fresh, innovative cuisine - tucked in a corner of York. We enjoyed every bite of the seasonal tasting menu and wine flight. It included seasonal mushrooms, scallops, beef and a few other amazing surprises. Cozy atmosphere with welcoming, knowledgeable staff. We’d definitely visit again.

We have enjoyed highly memorable meals here at least twice a year for the past few years. Excellent service from warm and knowledgeable staff. And the food is superb, every time. Cannot recommend Melton’s highly enough.

Fine dining restaurant come and go and call in and out of fashion, but Meltons is a faithful constantly in his York culmination scene. It has a many years since we last visited,an I am pleased with report its just as good as ever. The food and service were amazing and and I cannot think of anywhere else I would rather go that there for a special night out
