Mei's Buffet Restaurant in Taunton Deane

We came here for a family meal and I just hated the experience. The lady on the front counter just greeted us screaming, you pay, you pay. We then paid and took our seats and it was like sitting in a food hall at school. It was so loud and we couldn’t hear each other speak. The food was very average, full of chemicals to make the food gloopy and make you want more. I would never ever return here. They need to half tables and improve the food quality.

I have vowed to never return We went with friends for a birthday meal We we got there the queue was out the door We booked so went straight in as was others I told the woman on the desk that we were joining our friends and all she kept saying was You pay ,you pay, you pay, you pay I tried to speak but she came at me like a steam roller. She was extremely rude I went to the bar to pay and the noise was horrendous that I couldn't hear what the girl at the till said and when I got to the table I realised she had overcharged me When I got to talk to her, she tried to give me a voucher to come back instead of my money back I refused and said I wanted my money back When I got to the table, the awful woman at the door had followed me over and started ranting that we have to get our food. I want table I would of walked out at the start had it been just the two of us But it was a birthday meal We got our food when ready and it was Luke warm and tasteless The bar was a nightmare. My husband waited an age to be served when he came back the drinks were rank they were very warm It was the worst experience of a Chinese restaurant ever Don't bother going it awful beyond awful I would of given them 0 star if I was able

… it’s OK. Place is busy, staff doing fine. Food could be a touch warmer but it’s not cold and the trays all have stuff in them… reasonable variety too! It’s £15 for an all you can eat in a city centre weekend lunchtime. Never going to trouble the Michelin guys but that’s not the market. I’d return if here again

Went for a 4 seater meal tonight at 5pm, table 33a. Got the first round of plates back to the table and as we were tucking in I cut the satay chicken open to find it completely raw inside. Pointing this out to a member of waiting staff who then confusing asked "really?" He then had to go to a member of bar staff, who told him to speak with the manager. The manager then came over to the table and inspected the 2 pieces of chicken on a napkin at the table and confirmed them to be raw, as a result they went back to the kitchen, I'm unable to confirm if the tray was removed from the buffet but should have been due to cross contamination. We were given a free round of drinks (soft) but were completely put off by the rest of the food after (tastless) and staff (miserable looking) and atmosphere (dull and gloomy.) Since we have gotten home two of our party- my partner and myself and been ill. Will never be going back as a result of this experience and advise others to avoid, avoid, avoid at all costs. For the prices this buffet charges you can get high quality meals in Taunton.

I have been here loads of times with friends and family etc and have never ever had an issue. The food is phenomenal and the staff are great!

Awful for £21.99 there was no vegetarian main meal. They only have vegetarian sides. I questioned this and was offered to be made some stir fried mixed vegetables, hence the one star. However that was just watery beansprouts and pak choi. Shocking considering I paid the same as my meat eater husband who had a choice of about 6 main dishes. We will never return and will advise everyone I know not to make the visit and pay the extortionate price. Should have gone to Weatherspoons as better quality and choice!

We go often as this is our boy's favorite 'restaurant in the world!' There is so much choice including crispy duck, so many Chinese dishes, a sushi bar, fresh fish bar cooked to order and puddings including a chocolate fountain. There are separate sections for family and couples. The biggest problem is trying not to eat too much!

Gone downhill , food very fatty now, some dishes taste cheap compared to when it opened. Man outside smoking on arrival (staff) them showed people to tables, then outside smoking again, won't be visiting again. Shame as it used to be when it first opened 😕 furniture looks tatty now

Arrived and was not shown to a seat. Near the end of my meal was approached and asked why I was at a large table. Thus was done in an aggressive manner. I replied that no one had told me where to sit and there yhe place was nearly empty. Please avoid

What an absolute disgrace?! Mr ‘cap on backwards’ (obviously a cocky family member) , front of house ‘dude’ growled at my youngest to ‘move’ when politely asked to clear the table to make way for dessert. Unprofessional, full of attitude and rude- Happy to charge by height for children (all under 16) as adults and behaviour like this on top? You food was mediocre and greasy at best, we were regular customers, but will never return. Over £100 wasted- You guys need to be better in Taunton…a culinary dessert at the best of times - Sad times, Would definitely not recommend!

My 12 year old daughter wanted to go to Meis for her 12th birthday with family. We went with extended family of siblings and cousins. A total of 5 adults and 4 children (all 12 and under). On paying for our meal of 2 + 2, the cashier wanted to see the children and stated our 12 year old daughter had to pay as an adult due to her height! Since when has a 12 year old been classed as an adult? Disgusting practice. She is 160cm tall and of slim athletic build! The food was acceptable although too much salts in all dishes. Won’t be going again anytime soon.

Great food, excellent selection, something for everyone. My husband and son who don't really like Chinese food, loved the extensive desert section and the English selection. Thank you Martin for the excellent freshly made pancakes and friendly smile and chat! I've just read some of the other reviews and I have to say that I paid by card and didn't feel pressure to pay by cash. You don't have to order drinks when you pay for the meal. Go to your table, and get your table number from the drinks menu then go to the bar and pay for them when you are ready.

Upon entering you have to pay immediately, that includes drinks, they seem to favour cash, although reluctantly take card, also, any drinks you have to pay immediately and at some point they appear at your table, and if you want a drink mid meal, you have to go up to the bar. The food is very average , if you are on a low income and can pack away a huge amount of food, then this is probably a good place to eat. If you have been to many Chinese restaurants and experienced a wide range of quality of food, then this will definite rate an average. There’s a large range of different dishes but they are all pretty average.

Upon arrival you are herded to pay before you’ve even sat down, you have to get your own drinks and they really only want cash even though they have card machines!! We were sat down at a scratched worn out table whilst kids ran around us screaming. The website promises several cuisine type’s including Indian and Malaysian. NOPE. Just Chinese (if you can call it that), although there was sub standard sushi. No salads as promised. Tried the aromatic duck. This was really not good, nor was the rice, noodles or most of the chicken dishes. Don’t try any of the puddings. Foul, disgusting 🤢 pig swill. But most of all the prawns and muscles- DO NOT EAT THEM. Husband currently being very sick, I thought they smelt bad but he had a couple pints and thought they would be ok. So in summary - horrible food, herded like cattle, no customer service, not a relaxing atmosphere as it’s full of chavs and their little darlings. No no no. Just no. Never again.

The place is really amazing and their food is great!! I would recommend it to anyone anyday. I’m definitely going to come back

Oriental buffets in England isn't a common thing so was pleasantly surprised when we found this in Taunton! The inviting smells hit us at the entrance! We were greeted and directed to the cashier / bar to pay before being seated. The drinks were delivered to our table for our first order, but for the refills we had to go to the counter to pay and pick-up. We paid £25.98 for 2 of us which was a little more than we expected but is still great value for the amount of food on offer and unlimited number of times you can return for eats. I loved that there were soup options as well as sushi. Some of the pans were empty but they were soon refilled. I would have loved to see some more healthy options rather than mainly fried / battered items but this is just my preference. There were dessert options too including bowls of gummy bears for the young and young-at-heart. Definitely a welcome dining option in Somerset!

Mei’s offers an outstanding selection of food and desserts. The staff was accommodating. I suggest ordering drinks when you first pay to avoid issues with the minimum charge for credit cards. I would not recommend the venue for vegetarians or vegans.

The food gave three out of the 6 people I was with a bad stomach while in the restaurant and after going home.

Went here one earlier after a recommend and I can see why. The choice of food In unbelievable, very hot, extremely tasty and always topped up. They also had a pancake/crepe bar where you could have your food cooked while you waited and an amazing dessert bar. Staff were friendly and the restaurant was extremely clean and tidy. Myself and my family (5 adults 4 children) had a table booked yesturday evening for 5:30pm. As soon as we arrived we were moved around to a different table as we had children?! Tables looked unclean with food on the floor. We should have just left but had driven from Weston to be with other family so had to feed the children. Food was cold with no flavour. We had managed to eat one plate of food after being moved tables and queuing up to then be told by the owner we needed to leave as she wanted the table! We had not even received our drinks order by this point. I complained to the manager who told us not to worry take as long as we needed and couldn’t apologise enough. We went up to queue for a second plate which took 40 minutes to then be told again by the extremely rude OWNER we had to leave. She then proceeded to keep walking into my husband who was still queuing for food as an attempt to intimidate us into leaving. I have never been so disgusted and almost refused to pay. The poor manager did her best but we will never be returning to this absolute dump ever again.

Went into Mei’s for a family meal and had a 2 hour slot. Queued and waited for food and service for quite a lot of the time. My food was cold, chicken slightly pink and the service from one particular staff member was awful (possibly manager). Later told that we had to leave because the table was “needed”, she then proceeded to take the plates in which she didn’t ask if we were finished with. We refused to leave and she came back around 20 minutes later telling us we still need to leave so we clearly stated that we had a 2 hour table booked and we still had 10 minutes left and my 4 year old sister was still eating her dessert and she was trying to make us leave so she got upset. I told her i’ll take the plate with me if she won’t let her finish it. My dad went and got a napkin and we wrapped it up and another staff member was polite to us when we left, she has given us a AWFUL experience in there and not keen on coming back. Don’t recomend whatsoever!

Booked a table for 4, then emailed to change to 2, very nice reply confirming this was fine. Got to mei’s and the lady was rude and said we couldn’t sit there as it was booked for 4! Showed email but wasn’t having any of it, had to wait and she had the cheek to ask if I was happy. Funnily enough no I wasn’t. Food was awful, like it had been sat there for a while, warm not hot. Won’t go back.

We had an all you can eat lunch which was also included on the eat out the help out scheme so turned out to be an absolute bargain. The food was delicious and there was so much choice as normal but they had thought about how to serve safely. Rather than helping yourself as normal they have servers behind screens to load up your plate. They were generous and efficient and we didn't feel like we had to wait. Definitely worth a visit!

First visit since lockdown and was not sure what to expect . What you get is an excellent and professionally organised restaurant. Partitions to separate the customers from the food and individual waiters serving what you want as you walk around the selection. When finished food passed through to you through spaces in the PVC. As to the food, well, can not wait to go again. The selection of hot food is stunning and if that is not enough if you still have room, try the sweet selection. Being in a wheelchair this is possibly my favourite place, and with the special lunch time prices, highly recommended for wheelchair users or walkers.

I have visited a few times over the last few years and have always been very happy with it. However this Monday my family and I booked a table a few days ahead, we arrived with a few minutes to spare and found that there was a queue to get in, my brother went in to enquire and was told that we had to wait in the queue.WE HAD BOOKED A TABLE if you don't except bookings then don't take them. I would think twice about going back there now.

Well, to be exact and fair..I believe anybody that dislikes or believes this dining experience to be inadequate are completely delusional even for the highest of standards, the customer service is quality friendly and helpful, that meets expectation. The establishment is of immaculate hygiene and looks sophisticated enough for a couples or family experience. And the food caters to many broad categories, fine dining experiences including duck, sushi and the very best very cared for products provided excellent textures and flavours. In a nutshell there is nothing wrong with meis, it's all fuss. You want Chinese, Cantonese and the even cater for English aswell, you get what you come for and its fabulous. Want posh food go to London, buy golden chicken wings. Waste your money... However i pay £10 cheap as chips, leave with a full belly while enjoying full flavour. Absolutely perfect without degree. 5*****

Really great choice of food. Delicious. Help yourself as many times as you like. Love the desserts. If kids don't like Chinese food they can have chips, nuggets and things like that. So today myself and 3 other adults, 1 baby, 1 one year old and a four year old when to Meis, when we went into pay the women on reception was rude! No please or thank you! Her customer service was shocking too! We carried on as normal, we then got seated by a member of staff this was fine. Halfway through the meal the lady from the till that greeted us as first come over and pulled the table away that my Mother was sat on, when asked what she was doing she said your on the wrong table, this was the table that a member of staff had seated at. About 20 minutes after this the same lady come up to me and said next time do not bring your own drink (this was a juice for my 1 year old)!! On our way out the women just laughs at us. Bloody awful service I’m not one to moan but this was awful service I will not be returning!

How thrilled you should all be that such good food be available to you on the High Street! This is the only eatery I have eaten in where you PAY before you sit to eat! The apparent reason for this is the "dishonesty" of the locals who preferred to eat and leave prior to paying causing the owners to change their policy. Folks PLEASE READ...This is as Good a Chinese as I have ever eaten in. Whilst paying prior to eating is new to me, I AM fully with the owners for such a move which leads to cutting out of the dishonesty going on...Come on down to be properly welcome, to be greated with fine Chinese food, along with Japanese and some Italian. plus there are desserts to be had. At lunchtime, when we chose to go, there were a huge variety of options available to diners, each option being a pleasant dining experience. Staff are "on the ball", which adds to your visit. I feel I can only HEARTILY recommend this as a really good place to eat, but come on Taunton, meals should be paid for-come and enjoy!

Awful customer service,well there was none. Food ok but serious lack of signs for food available for vegetarians.

Very good food the staff are helpful I advise not to go on a Saturday as it’s very busy if you want to have chill dinner out, the deserts aren’t the best there basic, fast at taking plates away and drinks overall nice place .

Nice food... got full up too quickly though! Have to go up to the bar to get drinks after you pay your "entrance fee" All have to pay regardless of eating all not. and drinks very expensive.

Been here quite a few times and love it. Friendly staff on arrival, great choice of food. Help yourself to all you can eat and the puddings are just fab. Caters for all the family. Nicely spaced out tables so not sat on top of each other. Definitely recommend

My husband and daughter and I visited on 5th jan at about 3pm for our first ever visit , lovely clean welcoming restaurant , but found a few of the chicken dishes to be very dry and felt a little sick after I had eaten a bit of each , really disappointed as 15-99 each on a Sunday was enough to pay each to eat .

It’s an all you can eat restaurant that does what it says. Quite a nice selection to please everyone. Food was a good temperature and tasted nice. Evenings are quite expensive
