Living in Singapore for a long time I decided to visit Mei Mei to bring back memories of the hawker's…. Please don’t waste your time and money. Food was so disappointing, bowl of slop and overpriced. Staff were all miserable - not a smile from one of them. I’m annoyed as there were so many wonderful stalls and restaurants in Borough Market. Please avoid at all costs x

I love the food here and follow the chef on YouTube. The first time I came here, I loved it so much I came back 3 days later - for the food really. But every single time I went there, the staff was obnoxious and rude and too cool, if you know what I mean. The food has been getting worse and worse, and the last time I was in London, the first place I went in the morning was MeiMei. However, the computer was not working; it was hard to pay, and the people who worked there treated us as if they were doing us a huge favor by fixing their computers. Anyway, this is a one-star review just to call your attention to the service. You serve expensive street food, so attention to detail is important. And I won't be coming back just because I like being well-treated.

An absolute must when visiting Borough Market. Tastes & flavors combined to make a totally wonderful lunch, well priced & certainly tasty! Went for the Nasi Lemak a bowl full of flavors with coconut rice, fried chicken, sambsl (wow!), cucumber, fried anchovies & fried peanuts. It was big enough for lunch & great value for money. As we stood eating, with no space at the counter, a member of staff shooed away 2 peeps who were hogging counter space with their own food from elsewhere. We sat, ate & watched the world go by and walked away with Mei Mei certainly on our "must do it again" list!

Seeing Mei Mei do the rounds on social media (both Western and Chinese) and of course via the medium of YouTube (Uncle Roger and Aunty Liz) we made a beeline for Borough Market quite early on. We intended to hit Mei Mei around lunch time, as, well that's when we thought it would open, so imagine our surprise to find it open and with customers when we walked by just past 11am. Turns out they open from 10am on weekdays (closed Mondays). We milled around for a bit as it was a bit early for us to have any of the lunch time stuff, but, as we bobbed about Borough Market, it was getting busier and busier, so we decided to head to Mei Mei to get seated. We attempted to order the Kaya Toast set only to be told that they had no eggs, despite other people clearly having eggs on their plates and stacks of eggs in the open kitchen. At this point they were getting busy but not overwhelmingly so, so I can only assume that they couldn't be bothered to make any soft boiled eggs. Odd. Anyway, we ordered Kaya Toast and a hot tea (Teh Tarik) separately, which ended up costing more than the set. The conspiracy theorist in me thinks that they "lied" about the eggs and did it to earn a few extra quid by selling things separately... In reality staff were probably just lazy and didn't want to soft boil any more eggs or they were saving the eggs for their other meals, but that didn't explain why other people had soft boiled eggs on their plates... Be that as it may we also grabbed a plate of the Hainanese Chicken Rice. Everything arrived quickly and so we tucked in. The Kaya toast was epically small, given the high price you'd expect more, but it was literally two small slices of toast and a spot of butter and kaya jam. It was nice, just not £7 nice. Now, the Hainanese Chicken Rice was what we really came for, and this, this did not disappoint. Yes, it's a little on the small side, but, factor in that this is Borough Market, a massive tourist trap, in an expensive city, and it's not too bad. The chicken was moist, the rice was on point, in fact, it was probably the tastiest rice of this dish that I've had ever, and I've been to Singapore and queued a millennia at the Hawker centres. Pricey, touristy (I say that with irony as I was also a tourist there), weird egg situation, but that Hainanese Chicken Rice made the trip worthwhile. 3/5 seems harsh, I want to give it a 3.5 but the system doesn't let you, and I feel that 4 is slightly too high. If you're in the area, or you're visiting Borough Market anyway, then Mei Mei is a must.

I was working in my office nearby and decided to give this place a try. They have installed 2 machines to place the order. Seats are quite limited but most people order takeaway. My hainanese chicken rice came quickly. Portion size was quite small but it was ok for lunch. Dark soya sauce and chili sauce were provided. Taste was ok, not the best chicken rice I have had in london. Good choice for Singaporean food in the Borough market area

The overpriced takeaway consisted of under-seasoned fried chicken with a really sweet sauce that improved once I added vinegar to it at home. With a bit more effort they could do better.

Coming into London so had to check-out. Food was delicious despite only having a small menu (better to do a few things really well instead of lots of thing poorly) 😋 . My son has a seafood allergy too (everything that's not fish 😒) but staff managed thos really well, thank you. Unfortunately, there was nowhere to sit and eat so consequently ended up standing in a corner eating, while sheltering from the rain too. Didn't get to see 'Aunty' Liz either but still a great experience and would definitely visit again if in Borough Market.

My friend (who is a foodie) and I came here at 2 pm on a random weekday. Borrough market was packed, but thankfully the line had died down at Mei Mei. Set up reminds me of a night market good stand in Asia, but nicer (we are in London after all). We ordered the Hainanese chicken fried rice. It was delicious - great sauces. Very authentic, home-cooked food but more flavorful without giving you that super thirsty aftertaste. My friend loved it and wanted to try something else. We then ordered coconut rice and the fried chicken. So good. I did not mind the portion sizes - perfect amount for lunch. Also, it tastes like high quality ingredients were used - fresh, tender chicken. If it were in L.A. as a food truck, it would have lines out the door. We are definitely coming back the next time we are in London!

tried the hainanese chicken rice as highly recommended by some people. Very disappointed as the portions were too small at a price of £13. Rice was tasty but not of much portion and the chicken was just so so and there was actually much chicken. No customer service as ordering was at a self service machine.

Was really looking forward to this after seeing the instagram. The chicken curry consisted of some incredibly over cooked rice, sweet curry sauce (tasted like chip shop curry sauce - perhaps it's meant too?) and a whole chicken leg that was so dry and devoid of any flavour. Impossible to eat with a spoon.. Guy plating it up looked like he wanted to be anywhere else then here as he lobbed the food into the lined up trays.. £13 for a slapped together tray.

the basics: chow mein, fried rice, kung pao. could not tell the difference for each dish was the same colour. to much sauce and grease. it reminds me of a basic food truck that haunts the pub which sweeps you out after closing. it's not bad but the price does not reflect the mediocre taste. btw: they throw in a tiny chocolate bar at the bottom of the bag. just imagine seeing that little turd underneath 3 hot containers of oversaturated dishes. yum!

My go-to Korean in South London. Unpretentious decor. Efficient service and yummy spicy food at reasonable prices. My mate had the Army Base Stew! (He's into spicy and he got it.) I had bibimbap - rice with mixed veggies and a fried egg on top. Delicious and filling. We got a free bingsu for desert because we spent over 30. Sorry, bingsu is shaved ice with sweet milk and sweet red beans. Perfect for cooling down. If you find yourself hungry on the Walworth Road, go.
