So many choices! I wanted to try everything on the bakery menu, and the coffee was great. The brunch menu, however, was just alright—pretty simple and common, nothing extraordinary. My first impression was mixed. What really stood out was the need for better customer and table management. I’ve never seen such inefficient table allocation. Despite several empty two-person tables, they directed us to a long table meant for eight people, which we had to share with others. Most concerning, though, was the feeling that the staff were not very welcoming toward Asian customers. It’s an impression that left me uncomfortable and disappointed. Finally, they also charged service fee. I realised after I paid it. HAHA.

We were excited to try, we got a dessert & some coffees as takeaway and wait by the coffee station as the female server suggested incase we didn’t find seating, after ordering there was plenty of seats so we sat down and I went to wait for our coffees. Male staff member asked why I was waiting there and to go sit down I said I was waiting for our takeaway coffees and he’s like it’s brought to your table, I explained what she told me and he just dismissed me like no it’s brought to your table. Then we sat down and he later came with a machine to pay and order and I said we already ordered as I told you before. And he just had the worst attitude and vibe ruined our experience. What a shame. Should be kinder to your customers I was nothing but nice to him and kindly explained why I was waiting there, said sorry to bother you and he rolled his eyes. Iced Coffee was nice, dessert was ok

Visited this gem a few weeks ago when arranging a catch up as I used to come here quite often to grab one of their amazing cakes. Was lovely coming back and this time I had a dining in meal instead which was amazing. The staff were friendly and considering the place was packed the food arrived in great time. Recommend booking a table as we got seated promptly whereas there was a large group of people without a booking waiting at the door.

Foods great. Often staff come off as too cool for school and wait times are horrendous. Popped in to pick up earlier. Stood at the top of the stairs for 5 mins whilst staff threw glances but didn't serve or acknowledge. When finally someone came out they said there is another wait for a drink so I walked out. Third time this has happened so despite food being good I'll happily skip for takeaway in future.

Ordered The Medicine, it was a good portion. The chorizo patty had a nice flavour, and all the components came together very well. The bacon and patty were a tad salty. However, the rest lacked salt, so it balanced out. Hashbrown was crispy, and sourdough bread was lovely. Found the tomatoes a bit pointless, with a lack of flavour. It was busy and the atmosphere was nice. Did take some time on service here and there, but nothing too bad. Overall, it was good and I would recommend it.

Thanks to the Medicine team on Friday morning. At last minute the day before I booked a breakfast for 24 people at 8:30am just as the cafe opens. They accommodated us professionally and handled the large order really well. Everyone got exactly what they ordered and there were lots of ‘wows’ at the quality, which remained high even with the volume of work. Thank you for making our team breakfast so enjoyable.

Visited Medicine today as was really impressed on my first visit. Food was OK but there were alot of fruit flies & on visiting the upstairs toilet there were even more of them. The exterior toilet door & staff room door was filthy. It was our intention to buy cakes on the way out but was disgusted to see fruit flies on the Brownies and on moving it aside there were at least 5 feasting on it. I was horrified as I have previously purchased cakes from medicine but never again....the place needs fumigation!!

I had a work breakfast at 8.30am, arrived at the venue at 8.26am and was snapped at that they were not open and to go away. When I was finally seated, the order was wrong and there was no apology offered. Amongst the rudest service I have ever encountered anywhere. Given that the reputation and the food are both generally good, this was needlessly poor.

Tucked away at the top of New Street (Victoria square end) through some imposing looking double doors (Medicine sign above) and up a flight of stairs you'll find this large open plan seated coffee shop/bakery. Loved all the vibrant & healthy looking plants that fill the space and photography adorning the walls on Black culture in Birmingham. Coffee was sublime, best we've had for some time.

Taste wise I think this was the worst place I had ever eaten at. The matcha served had a very bad taste, even had spices in it and it was not ever mentioned on the menu. It tasted a lot like the spices you would get in pumpkin spiced latte… I had asked if they added anything else and the waitress tried to tell me it is just the matcha powder and soy milk in it and nothing else added and proceeded to tell me that naturally matcha tastes like that… I’m no matcha expert but there’s in no way matcha is naturally spiced, and from the colour of it I can tell it is low grade matcha. They even proceeded to add vanilla syrup when I’ve asked them to just make it just as matcha with milk only but they did whatever they wanted anyways… perhaps to hide the spiced taste…? But I can taste it was only sugar since the sediments was still there… so it was not even mixed well… I never asked for it but they added it anyways. The food was dry although looked aesthetically pleasing. My bf said his dish was just salty and it was hard for us to finish our dishes. Atmosphere wise it’s well decorated but I would not ever dine there ever again for both the service and food. They never really checked back on us either and it was like hunting for Waldo just trying to pay as they just kept walking past us.

Lovely interior and building! Really tasty food overall! Drinks okay, expensive considering the size, but the food makes up for that. Felt quite cramped seeing as basically every table was taken and was massively noisy, seemed to be quite a few servers actually unlike other places! Took a while to get the drinks and then the food, and then worse took even longer to get the bill, would be simpler to go up and order, or to pay online surely… Didn’t notice a toilet, but given the building I don’t imagine would be massively accessible! Really great food options though for brunch!

We usually come here for the matcha cake loaf which I love but they ran out today so we shared a salt beef grilled sandwich and some donuts. I have to say the sandwich looked rushed and poorly assembled but probably because they served it in 5 minutes- I would’ve happily waited another five for something more appealing, bread was nice though. Donuts are just not for me, full of icing and quite hard.

An Unexpected Protein Boost at Medicine Bakery 🐛🥗 Ever fancied a bit of extra crunch in your salad? Well, let me tell you about my recent adventure at Medicine Bakery in Birmingham! Picture this: A lovely family brunch, the promise of delicious food, and... a surprise acrobat on my plate! That's right, ladies and gentlemen, I nearly got an impromptu biology lesson with my Buddha Bowl when I discovered a caterpillar doing the backstroke in my greens. Now, I'm all for farm-to-table, but I didn't realise "farm" meant "entire ecosystem." 🌿🐛 The staff were apologetic, and the chef even personally reached out. They offered a £20 voucher as compensation, which I suppose is the going rate for almost consuming a future butterfly. But here's the rub: apparently, that voucher was meant to cover just my meal. Because, you know, only I was traumatised by the wriggly garnish. My wife and son? They were merely innocent bystanders to my near-metamorphosis into a bird. So, if you're looking for a dining experience with a side of wildlife education, Medicine Bakery might be your spot. Just remember to bring a magnifying glass and maybe a tiny net – you never know what you might catch! In all seriousness, whilst I appreciate their commitment to fresh ingredients, I think they missed the mark on making things right. A family meal was ruined, and a £20 voucher feels a bit... caterpillar-sized in the grand scheme of things. Pro tip: Always check under the lettuce. You might find the very hungry caterpillar! #UnexpectedProtein #DiningAdventures #AlmostAteACaterpillar

It was my first time in Birmingham and I was really excited to go to this place. My experience and the delicious food was however ruined by staff. I had to wait 5mn by the waiting sign while waiters passed and left - to attend to a mostly empty restaurant (3 tables of guests when I came in). They all saw me and none attempted to help. I eventually had to request getting seated before I was assigned a table. As one waitress handed the menu, I didn’t even get the chance to think about my order before the lady by the dessert counter came to me asked: are you going to order anything. It didnt sound like a friendly request. I was presented with the card machine and asked if I was ready to pay before I even finished my main dish and drink. Eventually took the 3/4 of my dessert outside. As a woman of color - i felt very discriminated against. Amazing jam doughnut tho. Will personally not be coming back

Today, we visited Medicine Bakery on New Street and had one of the worst experiences so far. The service was honestly one of the worst we've encountered, and the food was simply not worth it. We sent back two dishes immediately after trying them because we didn't like them, and we politely asked for them to be removed from the bill and replaced with something else. This is something that commonly happens, it is okei not to like something. If we had eaten the food and then asked for it to be removed, that would have been different, but this was not the case. The situation was straightforward, yet it was seriously blown out of proportion. The bill arrived with no amendments and the manager came over and essentially blamed us for ordering what we did. Going out for brunch is an opportunity for people to reconnect, but today was just awful. Honestly, the only good thing this place has is maybe the interior, but that is pretty much it.

I visited Medicine Bakery in New Street today for brunch as part of a group of six which consisted of four adults and two children. Cakes and doughnuts are on display as one enters the building and seating is further in to the right. I ordered a cappuccino and a toasted cheese sandwich which finally arrived arrived once I’d almost finished my drink. I wasn’t impressed with the cleanliness of our table which was very sticky, furthermore I don’t recall any staff undertaking any cleaning of any kind whilst I was there. The toilet facilities are very spartan: a single toilet and messy sink that is accessible using a narrow flight of stairs.

If I could give them no stars I would. I went for my best friend’s birthday and the service was absolutely appalling. We waited 30mins for a smoothie after the rest of the drinks had arrived and raised its absence to the waitress again before finally receiving it. We complained about our food; we had 2x passion fruit French toast which was quite frankly bland and lacking in all qualities that would make it a French toast. We raised this with our waitress and spoke to a supervisor about it asking for it to be replaced with Nutella blondies instead(which was just as disgusting as what it was substituted for). We ordered another drink after this and waited an hour before cancelling the order as it didn’t show up. Finally the bill came and the French toasts were still on it as well as a service charge and the substitute meal (2x blondies). Which we raised with a waiter and he sent over the manager (brunette with large framed glasses) that came over with a standoffish demeanour and responded with disrespect and attitude which was quite frankly attributes that make me believe whole heartedly she is not fit for a managerial position. Something that I voiced to the area manager that was in. Before handing us back to the supervisor (red head) that dealt with our situation. Although the situation was dealt with we did not receive an apology for our experience until we spoke to the area manager even though we were passed around throughout the entire process.

The restaurant itself is light and beautifully decorated but acted as a greenhouse and was very warm with not a lot of air. The menu looked tasty and varied but the food was just okay and the experience was let down by the service. The boy that took our order didn’t look up from his pad, didn’t ask about allergies or double check our order resulting in mistakes. I started with my drink order and he abruptly says “are you eating anything?”. No egg came on my croque monsieur until prompted and we never got the tap water we ordered. My sandwich was tasty and my friends French toast good but the hashbrown was not nice - soggy and mushy inside with no outer crisp and the romesco sauce added nothing. I also ordered a smoothie which came watery and chunky as though pre-blended and had to be sent back. On the plus side, the American waiter that delivered our drinks was very friendly and my smoothie was removed from the bill without issue.

The worst in all this was in the bakery/pastries area (before going inside), the floor looked very dirty, and the girl who was serving the customers had 0 Hygiene knowledge, she was not wearing any gloves, and in front of me she grabbed a paper bag from the floor, her hand touched the floor and then she put it inside one of the small white bags for one of the customers, if it was me I'll not accept this or even take anything from her no matter how delicious or wonderful taste the pastries are. What I can say is that it’s by far the most pleasant and calming experience I have had dining in a gallery. I was first interfaced with a young gentleman who was at the bakery. Don't be fooled. Considering that this restaurant orientates itself around brunch, it unfortunately has the atmosphere of a brewery. Nobody there to greet us as we arrived. Uncomfortable wooden benches shoved up against strangers. A very noisy setting having to shout at each other to be heard. We asked if we could be moved and staff were not very accommodating and talked about us in a different language. Its clearly very popular by how busy it is, but a tip to management and staff, this doesn't mean you should stop making the effort. Because customers will notice and take their custom elsewhere. We would have left if it wasn't for the rain that we had gotten soaked walking across town in, specifically to eat there. My partners drink was forgotten about, and the food was over complicated and overpriced. A Hash brown shouldn't be hard to get wrong, but it was most unpleasant in both texture and flavour. There is also only one toilet, that is small and grotty and not suitable for customer usage. Its also shared by both men and women and a man tried to get in seconds after I'd shut the door. Which is then very off putting to then use as a female. The toilet situation needs to be addressed, a big, expensive, busy food establishment with one small, shared toilet is simply not appropriate or acceptable. So overall, we couldn't wait to get out of that environment. Breakfast/ brunch should be a peaceful experience. Not chaotic brewery vibes. You won't start your day right here.

Possibly the nicest spot for breakfast in Birmingham. The food was incredible - highlights were the hashbrown... and everyone must try the passionfruit french toast. I will 100% be back. The only issue we experiences was that one of our party is a wheelchair user. It does state when booking that there is no lift access... however, the restaurant is completely unsuitable for wheelchair users. We managed to get my Mother into the restaurant by carrying her wheelchair up the stairs, however the access to the toilet was pretty much impossible for them. It may be better to state that there is no wheelchair access, instead of just stating there are no lifts.

Having enjoyed previous brunches here last year, we decided to book brunch on a return visit to Birmingham. We wish we had given our custom elsewhere. On walking through the door at the top a passing waiter snapped 'We don't take walk ins.', said in a tone and volume that would never be an acceptable way to treat customers. We explained we had a booking, with no apology for the rude and brusque greeting the waiter just replied 'oh'. Eventually he returned, allowed us to enter the venue and led us to the table with all the charm we expected after our initial encounter. We contemplated leaving at that poing due to the service having been so appalling, but being hungry and giving staff the benefit of the doubt we stayed. The service was never 'with a smile', warm or with an attempt to feign interest in customers but seeing as our initial experience was rude and aggressive, it improved. Food was a 50% success rate. The Heuvos rancheros was excellent. The maple bacon was less successful; dry, stodgy and cold - we contemplated sending it back but based on the service so far we decided we couldn't face another encounter. It's a shame, this used to be a relaxed place to enjoy brunch but the service has really let it down. We won't return, especially seeing that others seem to have had issues with service too. Hopefully the management will take heed of the comments and either implement some remedial staff training (start with the basics: don't be rude or aggressive, smile occasionally and maybe throw in the odd 'please' and 'thank you') or recruit some new staff who have a vague interest in being customer facing.

A very lacklustre welcome, the staff in general seem half asleep or bored. We asked for toast with strawberry jams and when it arrived it wasn’t strawberry and they said they didn’t have any. Wouldn’t have ordered the toast (which was only dough dough) had we known. Staff were slow to serve and respond. Eggs were under cooked and the place in general is a cluttered mess of boxes and supplies. Very underwhelmed by the whole venue.

Visited for lunch and had the Harissa benedict. The food was delicious and the surroundings were really interesting. Only one unisex toilet that's up a narrow flight of stairs with a long queue when I visited, but other than this no complaints at all.

Ordered about £50 of breakfast to my home. Firstly did not receive the hashbrowns at all. Ordered some buttermilk chicken. £5.50 and got three TINY pieces so more like popcorn chicken. I ordered a pistachio cruffin and received a nutella cronut. I don’t understand how however made up this order can be so incompetent??

I wasn't best pleased to see that dogs were allowed to be in the dining area. But what really made me give this rating was the fact one of the dogs was allowed to stand on the table with it's dirty paws and yet no staff requested that the dog needed to be put back on the floor. Disgraceful hygiene standards.

I had a salt beef reuben, it was lovely tho on the pricier side. The grapefruit and rosemary water was refreshing! Highly recommend. Great experience, beautiful interior, nice spot to catch up with friends.

Sat here trying to order for over an hour and wasn’t even served water (we only wanted drinks). Tried to get the staff’s attention but they would totally ignore our group when trying to get them to clean the dirty table we were sat at.Eventually got to order but waited indefinitely. We ended up leaving and the staff looked shocked when we explained what was happening. It’s a shame I don’t think I’ll come back as the place is really pretty :(

A hidden gem! We all enjoyed a light lunch and cakes here on Sunday and only had a short wait for a table as we didn't book. Food was really tasty and very well presented, staff were ok, but we asked 2 different people for tap water for the table and didn't get any, so dropped a star for service. The place is really interesting and would definitely go back again, especially for the delicious food. Be aware, as an old Victorian building, the one and only public toilet was up a narrow winding staircase and was rather cramped inside with a loose toilet seat.

I’ve tried this place a few times now to give it a chance and although the hot food is good, the baked goods are a massive let down. The cronut/cruffin looks pretty but tastes super oily and the doughnuts are way too sweet and chewy. I’ve also tried the cakes in the past and they’re just…okay. Definitely better bakeries around the city in my opinion.

Medicine Bakery in Birmingham offers a unique culinary experience with its artisanal bread, pastries, and specialty coffee. However, my recent visit on a Saturday morning left me with mixed feelings. Despite having made a reservation in advance, my party still had to wait for about 15 minutes to be seated. Once seated, we eagerly ordered coffees and the full English breakfast. Unfortunately, the wait for our food was longer than expected, stretching over 40 minutes. To our surprise, we noticed that tables around us were also waiting for their orders, with only drinks served until the food finally arrived. When the full English breakfast did arrive, it was decent overall. However, the hash brown was a bit of a departure from the traditional recipe. Instead of using potato, it seemed to be made with yam, which gave it a unique and unexpected flavor. While it wasn't to everyone's taste, it certainly added an interesting twist to the meal. Despite the hiccups with timing and the unconventional hash brown, our experience at Medicine Bakery ended on a sweet note. Before leaving, we picked up a few donuts from the bakery, which we enjoyed later that evening. The donuts were a highlight, with their delicious flavors and perfect texture, leaving us satisfied and eager to return for more bakery delights in the future.

Horrible service, waiters are not friendly at all and took 10 mins to seat us despite half of the place being empty. Our food took over 45mins to come out and potion size of the French toast is half what it used to be !! I’m definitely not coming back again

Great breakfast, decent portions, excellent experience. We went Sunday morning for a yummy brunch. The avocado terrine is a decent portion (doesn't need 2 slices of toast in my view) and tasty. The mushroom brioche was so tasty. I do think the cut is wrong as hard to pick up and the delicious sauce drips through the base. Cutting with a knife and fork is ok, but the 'Medicine' branded paper then comes into the food. Maybe a slight fix needed. Our drinks were sumptuous and the pasties are divine. I had the peach crumble cronut (need a good set of teeth) and very sweet. The fruit pastry was delicate and yummy. Overall a great experience and one we would happily try again and again.

We came for Sunday brunch to end a hen weekend. Our food was nice but nothing extraordinary. Two servers took our order but got it wrong, so one of the party didn’t receive food until the others had finished. Servers seemed bored and uninterested in our experience.

went into this medicine this afternoon with my boyfriend to get the vegan reuben sandwich, one we've both tried before and really enjoyed. we've both been vegan for around 2 or 3 years. when the sandwich arrived, we were concerned that we had been given the meat reuben. we asked a member of staff who assured us that the sandwich was vegan. my boyfriend then tried the sandwich and was certain that it was meat - he tried a piece of what looked like, and turned out to be, salt beef (an item which doesn't appear on the menu for a vegan reuben). we attempted to speak to several other members of staff, who were all very accommodating, but refered us back to the manager who didn't seem interested in our concerns. we are willing to concede that it may have been the vegan reuben with some extremely believable, sinewy meat substitutes, but the manager didn't offer any proof beyond her word, and having tried the meat, we were certain it wasn't vegan. in general, we've always loved medicine - on this occasion, however, we'd be tempted to encourage any vegans to try elsewhere.

We had delicious coffee and pastries. However it is very inaccessible, with a large staircase as the only entrance and an extremely narrow staircase up to the only bathroom. This makes it very difficult with a pushchair. Also my heavily pregnant partner asked if she could sit somewhere with a backrest but we were told the multiple empty booths were all reserved and made to sit on a bench. Inevitably the booths were still empty for our whole visit so not sure why they couldn't support her request.

Stopped in about 2:30 p.m. for treats. Ordered a fat croissant, an oreo muffin and a salted caramel brioche donut. Total cost £12. DH said the croissant had a sweet-ish taste to it. Said it wasn't as good as a French bakery croissant in Edinburgh. DS had the oreo muffin. He said it was tasty, but again, it wasn't 'the best' he's ever had. I ate the entire salted caramel brioche donut and the little brownie bite on top. It was good. I wasn't sad to have it. I didn't need dinner. Would I order it again? Not sure. I would probably order something else. Everything looked good. The staff were friendly. The items were well packed.

One of Birminghams best spots for brunch, lunch and patisserie. The menu is varied and I think fairly priced given the quality and freshness of ingredients. I have always found service to be impeccable. They have quite a few branches now - including the mailbox, selfridges and new street - all just as good as each other and I’ve tried them all!

Terrible service staff were uninterested and firstly got our drink order wrong. Had to wait 30 mins before the first meal came out and then a further 20 mins before the 2nd meal which was sent back as the fried egg was raw. The manager didn't even apologise and it seemed too much trouble to take back. Also no cutlery given and was told rudely that we had to get our own from the side of the coffee machine. Totally unacceptable service and will not be going back again.

Rude rude rude customer service, male staff have an attitude and make sarcastic comments. If you want polite service go elsewhere. One member of staff waited for me to finish my drink so he could collect my glass… very weird service

Lovely little pub. Excellent atmosphere for a Saturday night. We had booked a table earlier in the day and lucky we did as the small dining area was full. Lovely welcome. Ordered food and drink at the bar. Notified of a little delay for the pie for my partner which was no problem. I had the burger which was lovely, hot, tasty and a very good portion size! Unfortunately, my partner’s pie was cold in the centre, he also tells me his mash was not hot either but he’d eaten that. He was unable to eat the cold pie so alerted a member of staff at the bar. No one up until this food had checked if the food was okay. They could not have dealt with the situation better to be honest. Told us they would refund straight away, apology from both front of house members of staff, they warmed it up, they offered a drink on the house which we declined as were driving. It happens sometimes, but the professionalism in dealing with a problem was what stood out, thank you for not making it awkward, for being friendly and accommodating. Not sure we’ll be back for good but I’ve been here a few times for drinks before or after going to the Blue Orange Theatre across the road so I’ll continue this.
