What can I say that hasn’t already been said but I would like to add something anyway! Meadowsweet isn’t a cheap option when it comes to dining out. However, they say you get what you pay for, and this certainly applies here! Food is excellent and the team, both the kitchen and front of house, work seamlessly together to provide an exemplary experience.

The Meadowsweet website does not give too much away about the dining experience you are going to have and that is good as the element of surprise on the evening is part of what made our evening so special. The menu changes weekly and features seasonal ingredients. What a taste sensation we had from the canapés right through to the selection of puds. It is all about the food here - no flowers on the tables or art on the walls - just concentrate on what’s on your plate and admire the skill and care that has gone into the presentation and creativity of the dish. We loved the fact that the chefs come out of the kitchen to serve each course and tell you about it, and the small team work together so that the evening runs smoothly not just for us but for every other table too. It was a memorable meal. Meadowsweet is right up there with the best in the country, and we highly recommend if you are looking for a fine dining treat.

Culinary delight to conclude our week in Holt. On our last visit to Holt the restaurant was being refurbished, so we booked well in advance to reserve our seat. The restaurant is small and cosy with tables in the ground floor rooms of a converted period cottage, giving it a very relaxed and informal feel. The service was first class and the food exceptional. An array of ‘starters’ followed by 4 beautifully presented courses, each delicately crafted from locally sourced ingredients. Fabulous aromas and wonderful flavours. A shorter tasting menu than normal for a Michelin restaurant. Consequently, the evening flew by. Might suggest adding 1 -2 additional courses to enhance the experience. The evening was rounded off with a medley of deserts - works of art and a perfect end to the night. Intimate, informal with exquisite dishes. Highly recommended.

My wife and I had a joint birthday celebration, for which we decided Meadowsweet would be ideal, having heard good things about it from friends. The food was exceptional and cooked/served with passion and enthusiasm. Our room was nicely unfussy but furnished/equipped with nice things. The bed was very comfortable and everything was clean. There is a great deal of attention to detail on display here - small things such as being greeted warmly on arrival by the owner. Congratulations, Meadowsweet - we look forward to seeing you again.

I reviewed Meadowsweet a year ago and didn’t just give it five stars – I said it was possibly the best meal I had ever had in Britain. There’s really no way to improve on that, but I’m happy to report that it wasn’t just a blip. It remains in a class of its own. However, this time there was a twist for me: I was recently diagnosed with coeliac disease and now have to follow a strictly gluten-free diet. So it’s a special pleasure to say that on this level they are also quite exemplary. The special bread they made was the best GF recipe that I’ve yet encountered and, at every stage where gluten raised its head on the standard menu, they didn’t just take things away but added items that were equally fine or even finer – eg an authentic one-man souffle where everyone else had a piece of cake! They perfectly understood about cross contamination and gave us separate butters and so on too. And at every stage they kept providing reassurance that the thing that looked like it could potentially have gluten didn’t. (Few restaurants realise how important that is!) We stayed the night again and, even there, they had even changed the sweet offering with the teas and coffees in the room to avoid exposure to gluten. They probably won’t thank me for sending a whole load of coeliacs their way but this really is as “safe” an environment as you are likely to find outside your own home!

We recently stayed for two nights, and had two different dinners such is the driven approach of the chef. The dining rooms are set in an historic cottage with low ceilings and doors. The table has a hidden drawer that contains your cutlery- neat touch. Service from Rebecca and the team is seamless and perfect. It’s a great touch that the chef and his team are incorporated into service delivering the dishes along with an explanation of the dish answering any questions that you may have. The food is Devine. As overnight guests, no problems with having a drink with dinner and the wine cellar is good, and Rebecca knows her wines and they include some off the beaten track ones. The accommodation is simple comfortable and just upstairs from the dining rooms. Plenty of room and a good shower everything you need. And despite being on the main A road in Holt it is surprisingly quiet, a good night sleep was had by all. The probably the best breakfast we have had in a restaurant with rooms, setting you up for a day sightseeing, ready to do all again that night. Recommended? Definitely a perfect stay that’s Rebecca, Greg and the team.

We stayed for 2 nights following a recommendation. So glad we did. The whole experience was first-class. Our bedroom (Mallow) was lovely and comfortable. Dinner on both nights was a real treat, from the multiple amuse bouches through the taster menu with its various subtle flavors to desserts. The second night had a completely different tasting menu from the first. The courses are presented by the chefs which is a nice touch. Service from Rebecca and Hannah was perfect. Breakfast each day was also a quality affair using plenty of local produce. Highly recommended, we will be back.

Booked dinner and overnight stay at Meadowsweet to celebrate our 31st wedding anniversary. It was amazing - probably one of the best dinners that I have ever enjoyed. The menu was inventive, the dishes beautifully presented and the food delicious. The lobster raviolo was a particular highlight. However, the whole meal from the pair of amuse-bouche, 5 small starter plates, followed by 5 main tasting plates and then a slection of desert plates was exquisite. Go hungry. The service was attentive, but low key and the restaurant beutifully appointed, Meadowsweet only has 24 covers for dinner and 3 double bedrooms to stay so you will need to book well in advance. Our bedroom (Mallow) was beautifully simply furnished, with a good sized modern en suite. Very comfortable with breakfast to the same high standard as dinner. I fully expect Rebecca and Greg to get a second Michelin star very soon.

I visited here with my husband for a mid-week, evening Tasting Menu. Neither of us have been before. There is no dedicated parking. We parked in a pay and display car parked and walked to the restaurant which took around ten minutes. We had booked in advance (you must do this as it naturally sells out quickly). I had no problem get a booking in the same month for a mid-week evening, but the weekends were booked up much further in advance. When you book, you have a space on the booking to state about any allergies etc, to which I filled in that my husband was good with whatever they served but that I could not have alcohol. The restaurant itself is small (basically an end-terraced house). I was a little worried that this would mean it would feel like you were sat in someone’s Lounge and it would be quiet and awkward. But it was not at all. In fact, it probably had more atmosphere than other Michelin establishments we have been to. The noise levels were perfect and we felt we could talk without being overheard but not so loud that we had to raise our voices either. When we first arrived, we were taken to our table and seated. The server brought our menu for the evening and gave me a separate one, confirming with me about my shellfish allergy. I do not have a shellfish allergy. I explained that this was not me and that I was the guest who could not be served alcohol. She looked a little confused and asked someone else for help. They then brought me a ‘normal’ menu and I was asked if I was sure I did not have the shellfish allergy, which I confirmed and repeated that my booking was the one with no alcohol. The next couple that came in after us was the lady with the shellfish allergy so she got her correct menu, thank goodness! The food was faultless. There were a couple of items that I was not as keen on (one of the breads and the pigeon), but this was purely my personal taste and I still cannot fault the cooking, flavours or portion sizes of these items. A couple of items I had assumed that I would not be keen on (the smoked eel and the oyster, mainly) but these were utterly delicious. I have never had warm oyster before and it was a revelation! I genuinely cannot choose which plate I enjoyed the most. Parts that I had been looking forward to the most were actually lower down my favourites than things I was not sure if I would enjoy as much. The flavours were superb. When you tasted each component individually, some were a little ‘much’ and nothing special. But then you ate a mouthful with each component together and it just all worked perfectly. Nothing was overpowering yet there was not an element on any forkful that you could not pick out individually either. The portions sizes were perfect and we were pleasantly full at the end. My husband had the wine flight and said he enjoyed each one immensely and had some wines that he would not have chosen otherwise. I do have one fault that I really need to mention though. As I mention above, I stated on my original booking that I was to have no alcohol. This was made very clear. And when we had the mix-up on first being seated about a shellfish allergy, I then repeated another two times that I was the guest who could not have alcohol. Like all good restaurants, the servers would explain each course to us on delivering the plate. On our fish course, the server talked through the plate and I thought I heard him mention wine in the sauce. I stopped him and asked if there was alcohol in my meal and he replied that there was. I said again that I was not to be served alcohol. He immediately removed both our plates and returned with replacements, my husband’s being a newly plated dish that he was expecting and mine being the same but with an alternative sauce. If I had not been actively listening, I would have consumed alcohol that I had specifically stated on numerous occasions that I was not to have. I dread to think what would have happened if this were done to someone who suffers with anaphylaxis reactions to a food item. When our fresh plates were brought to us, not once was the word ‘sorry’ said to me. The replated dishes were brought our very quickly to us, which was great in that it didn’t disrupt the flow of the meal, but it was like the mistake simply hadn’t occured and that they had already forgotten what had just happened. I‘m not sure if the issue were the front of house not relaying to the kitchen my dietary requirement, or if it was the kitchen that had forgotten, but I would have expected a member of staff to come to the table and speak to us and be apologetic. Nobody did. And in fact, I felt after that the servers were a little more distant to us when serving the following courses like somehow it was my mistake or that I hadn’t told them in advance (I had, numerous times). The mistake in serving was not mentioned at any point by any of the staff or acknowledged in any way (I do not mean by compensation / free items as I would have declined this, I just mean verbally). The toilets were lovely. They are small but the building is small and there is nothing you can do about that! They were really nicely decorated, had a lovely smell and had been cleaned (or at least the towel basket emptied) between my visits which is good to see. The décor of the restaurant is lovely. It is very simple and unfussy, yet modern and clean. My heart dropped slightly when a couple of larger parties came in with birthday balloons and gift bags etc, but they kept the noise down and were not disruptive at all. The atmosphere of the whole restaurant was just lovely. I would have liked a shade or blind or something on the window as my husband was sat facing the window and the sun was so bright that my husband could not look up from the table without leaning at a very awkward angle for around half an hour until the sun had dipped below the window line. It was uncomfortable for him and made our conversation a bit disjointed for a short period. He also could not look at the servers as they were presenting the plates because of it. The price was decent for what we had, I think. We both had the Tasting Menu, we had one cheese course to share, my husband had the Wine Flight, a gin at the beginning of the meal and a coffee at the end and we paid about £450. I also liked that when we asked for water, we were offered still, sparkling or tap, which is something some places do not mention. It is obviously not somewhere we will be visiting on a weekly basis, but it is DEFINITELY somewhere that we will be returning to. This is my favourite Michelin we have eaten at so far and I hope it does well for many years to come. Utterly, utterly delicious.

What an experience. Me and my wife went for a meal last night. 19/5. We stayed over in the Verbena room. On first arrival everyone we met were friendly and bubbly. The room was spacious, lovely and very clean. We went down for dinner and every course was amazing. It looked as good as it tasted. We had the fine wine pairing which was lovely. Every detail of the place down to the cutlery and tables were such a nice touch. It felt like you were part of the restaurant and the night was yours to enjoy in your own way and that isn’t something in my opinion you get at all Michelin places. I can’t praise it enough. We had a perfect evening and will definitely be going again. Thank you.

My wife and I visited here recently as a joint birthday treat including a nights stay. We were greeted warmly on our arrival and shown straight to our room, and already we could sense an air of something special, without the slightest hint of pretension, which is something I’ve experienced in several high end dining restaurants. Dinner was at 7pm, so my wife and I strolled into Holt for a couple of thirst quenchers. 7pm arrived and we were set for the main event. A taster menu is all that’s on offer, but boy oh boy why offer anything else, dish after dish, all perfectly timed and the attention to detail was sublime along with the flavours. As a couple we have been lucky enough to eat in some of the finest eating establishments, not only in the main metropolitan cities in the uk, but the world including Geranium in Copenhagen, but my word this tiny location not more than 30mins from my own doorstep gives them all a run for there money and I would go as far to say it is the best? With full belly’s and heads swimming after our gastronomical delights we headed up to our room. Our room was cosy but contemporary, warm and extremely comfortable and even though it faced a busy through road, was very quiet. All the modern facilities you could ask for, a lovely shower and toiletries, but the bedding was the stand out, which has now prompted a further email to our hosts as to where we might be able to purchase our own. Breakfast was included, which was simple, but again, absolutely delicious with a very deliberate nod to Scotland given the head chefs heritage. Make no mistake, Meadowsweet is not cheap, but when you dissect the food quality, accommodation quality , service and warmth from our hosts…..it’s worth every penny. We will definitely be back.

A strange sense of deja vu as we arrived at Meadowsweet. Once the home of one of our favourite restaurants which closed in 2004, this new venture is already making a name for itself. We were shown to our table by Rebecca who runs front...

If you can get a table, you must experience the flawless cooking and service. It’s not cheap at £75 per head , but is worth every penny. Wine list is very reasonable too. No doubt this place will have a Michelin star soon.

Exceptional food and service. This is intimate fine dining with exceptional attention to detail and care. The chef created a special menu for my husband as he doesn't eat fish and he had some incredible alternatives. Wine pairings were superb and just accentuated the intensity...

This restaurant, within the hotel, but open to the public, is perfect. The service was excellent, friendly and professional. The food was exceptional - beautifully presented and very tasty. We can see why it is so popular with the locals and we look forward to eating here again - simply a great experience!

This is a very special hotel indeed. Kept, by its exuberant owner, in 1920’s style in homage to Agatha Christie who used to stay there. Full of old pictures and bits and bobs. Our bedroom ( medium size) was very comfortable with fun roll top bath but has modern amenities as well. But was next to the kitchen extractor fan which was noisy until 11 pm All the staff, mainly young people, were outstandingly helpful and polite. Nothing was too much trouble and it was the type of service I haven’t seen for many years. Well done. It is also highly popular , and full the nights we were there. Largely I suspect because of the combined dinner, bed and breakfast offerings. At very good value for money. The food was generally delicious and fresh. Duck, halibut, sea trout and the local crab and lobsters were outstanding but the “locally caught king prawns which, like the lobster, were landed today “ were obviously frozen as were tasteless and they ( king prawns) don’t live in UK waters. That was the only disappointment on the menu, which I wouldn’t have mentioned except they had been really hyped up by the enthusiastic person I assume was the owner. Good well chosen wine list and fine cocktails The reason I haven’t given five stars is with the regimented way guests eat. Severe set 25 minute table timings for breakfast and dinner. I do understand that the kitchen needs to be paced to cook such good food to order, but the timings on offer were not good for many of the customers. By the time we arrived to check in at 3pm after a long drive we had to settle for a 6.30 supper and 9.15 breakfast. The next day breakfast wasn’t available until 9.30 … hopeless for anyone who works or has to leave earlier.. and I overheard two couples saying their 6.30pm slot was far too early for dinner , but that was all that was left because the best table times had already been given to people from outside who had booked in for a meal. You are asked to go to the bar half an hour before your meal where you receive some underwhelming amuse bouche and are expected to buy a drink whilst perusing the menu. This is to help the chef timings but also allows for tables to be turned over and reset. The last day we were there the small bar was over crowded and we had to wait an hour to be shown our table. Service was then very slow. I just couldn’t eat rich food at 9pm having waited by then two and a half hours. So because I prefer more personalised service and eating at a time that suits my stomach, and I like to be sat at my table and not held in a “ holding pen” this is not an experience I personally wish to experience again. Having said that I realise that this hotel really does suit many of its guests, who really loved it. So it’s only my own opinion and I suspect I’m in a very small minority
