Mcgowans in Edinburgh, City of

We always visit here when visiting Edinburgh on a couple of nights for our evening meal (as we have a Flaming Grill close to us at home and know the brand). It’s not far from the city and we like a change from the tourist restaurants and bars in the city. We’ve always found everyone to be very friendly and this latest visit was no exception. There is a good range of drinks and the food is served hot and in a timely manner. We will definitely be back again on our next visit to Edinburgh.

Popped in for a couple of drinks. It's a fairly typical and generic entertainment complex pub with basic food and drink. Not terrible, but fairly soulless, like an airport departure lounge pub. They dress it up to look like a pub, I suppose, but you know it could just as easily be a Starbucks or a chain restaurant. It was fairly quiet when I arrived. Thee bar was unattended. I waited a while until server (Lewis) finally appeared. I had a promotional code for a free pint of some new beer that had been sent to me by the brewer and the pub company (Greene King). I asked the server whether the voucher would be accepted, since the T&Cs clearly indicated that Mccowans Brewhouse was a participating outlet, and was curtly told no. I was surprised at this and offered to show the server the T&Cs on my phone, but they were not interested and simply stated that they did not accept the voucher. Fair enough. I would have stayed, but the tone and attitude of the server put me off and I went to The Diggers pub nearby, which has lots of character and much better customer service.

Terrible attitude from I assume a manager, large guy, bald head called Chris, myself and a colleague came for lunch with a lady we support after being at the bowling near by, the lady is in a wheelchair, cerebral palsy and can only move her eyes and mouth, though is nonverbal, she was delighted when we saw on the children's menu there was sausage and mash, usually she is only able to have pasta as she requires a mashed consistency, and is required to have lunch to take her much needed medication. Chris saw the children's menu in my hand and said we cannot order from this as it's under 15 only, I explained our lady cannot eat adult portions and requires a soft mashed diet for her meds, he continued to refuse and cited HO, doesn't allow this. I told him this had been allowed in the past when a lovely man had, I assume been the manager, he continued to refuse and had a very uncaring attitude to this unique situation, to be honest if there had been any where else close to go we would have left, our client was SO disappointed and upset but had to have pasta as she requires her medication. Discrimination at its finest, we work for Edinburgh council and will ensure we spread the word to avoid here.

The food was good and the service was very fast, but I ordered a shot and it didn't match with the price on the menu. I show the guy behind the bar my receipt and the price on the menu and he only apologized about it telling me that the price was wrong without offering a refund or an alternative solution. Very disappointed about the situation especially because when my boyfriend asked about the issue they offered a refund straight away. No words about it!

Manager is a clown Attended with 10 friends Saturday afternoon, arrived at 1pm when there was a handful of people in the bar, sat upstairs and had an enjoyable afternoon where one of our party was about to be presented with a leaving gift. Few of the party gave a round of applause and guy who claimed to be the manager (bald head) ran upstairs advising it was a family bar etc and was extremely rude, confrontational and handled the situation like a child. He went face to face with one of our party and then claimed it was assault (laughable, especially when one of our party is a serving police officer). We decided to leave as we had spent 4 hours in the place spending cash and were not putting up with that from the manager. I spoke to the bar staff as we left and asked to speak to the manager but they claimed he was busy in the office, they also verified we had not caused any issues prior to the managers brainfart episode. Won't be back and I'd advise folk to avoid this place, the fountain pub over the road is far more friendly.

My boyfriend and I wandered in a couple years ago and we really enjoyed the food, drinks and staff. The playlist is always great and varied, there’s a pool table and the service is great. We’ve been coming back ever since and it’s just a lovely pub! We come here with friends whenever we can cause the prices are so reasonable, and after a couple pints we can go play laser quest or do mini golf at fountain park.

Mccowans cater to all my meal and sports watching needs, the prices are fair and reasonable, the food is brilliant and the drinks are varied. The atmosphere is also very welcoming. Highly recommended if you're within the fountainbridge, Edinburgh area

For decent, unfussy meals served in comfortable surroundings, I have found nowhere which surpasses the value for money offered by McCowan's. A great alternative to cooking at home and then facing a pile of washing-up. We've never been disappointed yet.

mcgowans is part of the flaming grill restaurant chain they serve very good and very reasonable food the steaks are particularly well priced the staff are great cant find any faults with the establishment.

I took a group of friends from out of town here on New Year's Day to get an all-day breakfast to mop up the drink from the night before.The pub was reasonably quiet at 12pm and the staff were very accommodating as some of our party asked for food not on the menu (eggs on toast) in addition to our three all day breakfasts.This good first impression soon wore of as we waited 40 mins for 2 of our breakfasts to come out with 3rd coming a further 15 mins later, and a 4th - which we hadn't ordered - coming 5 mins after that (we sent that back as, despite my complaints about the wait, the servings were filling so even if we wanted a free breakfast we couldn't manage it)I'm sure this was only a one off and, despite the wait, it was good value for money with friendly staff (the manager was very apologetic) and a good selection of ales.

I had the worst burger and worst service ever experienced in Edinburgh. Absolutely terrible and couldn't get out of the place quick enough. Some of the staff were extremely rude with an obvious lack of any training on how to treat customers.

We've visited this pub a few times over the last year or so and it never lets you down. Good service, good food and a decent pint. Simple as that.

Visited twice in October, start of business Saturday lunchtimes. Front of house bar and eating areas have had a makeover since last time, some subtle upgrades looking fresher. Ripped carpet held with gaffer tape on way to toilet is a customer claim and accident waiting to happen. Decided on Mcgowans for something to eat before we went to the cinema. The food was really good for pub grub. The three of us had the chicken wings sharer , it was delicious and there was loads for three. I then had surf,turf & cluck which was very tasty and filling. My wife & son both had scampi which they both enjoyed. The food was very tasty , warm & served promptly. The staff were really friendly. There are numerous tvs for the footy and a nice atmosphere. The only minor issue was my wife wanted bangers & mash which had sold out. We'll just need to go again so my wife can enjoy the bangers & mash.

A good place to go to watch sport on tv, all football shown, friendly staff, a good selection of relatively cheap food and drink. Big menu of pub grub, with some "food challenges" to get your picture on the board. Enjoyed the bones and sharing starter.

The staff here couln't have been more helpful, even opening up the top floor as downstairs was full. Very varied menu - hard to pick from the delicious offerings, but what we did pick, was hot, tasty and very quick to arrive via another smiling helpful member of staff. Loved the restaurant, loved the staff, loved the food - the best meal we've had in Edinburgh and far from breaks the bank. A must visit and a definite return for us

Went here with the family for dinner tonight! The menu was vast which was fantastic as it allowed us to all have different things! The staff were friendly and the kids portions were a great size too! A gastropub/steakhouse in the Fountainpark Leisure complex. Good choice of starters (chicken wings, nachos, sharing platters etc) mains (excellent value fish and chips, very good steaks, chicken, burgers etc) and desserts. Wide range of draught and bottled drinks. Lots of large screens showing sport. The food is good and very keenly priced. The steaks are very good value. The staff are fiendly enough and get on with their jobs. Been perhaps eight times and is consistently as described above.

Went here for our teas on a Friday at 6pm. Very busy as a function upstairs and the main seating area was full. Had a drink at the bar and just waited 10 mins for a table. The staff were friendly and constantly checking for empty tables when customers came in. Had scampi and chips and my partner had New York chicken which was tasty. Plenty on menu to pick from and for pub grub looked good what other people were eating.

Having something to eat before film at next door multiplex. Bar staff completely ignored me when I tried to ask how we ordered/ got seated. Waitress was just as indifferent. Food was basic but OK for a quick bite. Experience would have been better if staff learned to make eye contact occasionally!

I had the misfortune of eating here on saturday night.Being a vegetarian i went for the nut roast christmas dinner main.I can safely say there was not a single nut in the green tasteless sludge covered in a bland tomato sauce .The vegetable's dear me !!! carrots where like the supermarket reduced ie white.A large lump of hard cauliflower also uneatable .Soggy potatoes the only part of the main i ate.Service was terrible , we got our starter weren't asked if we wanted drinks had to demand them twice.If your vegetarian avoid this place .

Went with a couple of friends to have a meal here. One member of staff was on and she looked miserable as sin. Still we thought we would try our luck...went up to the bar to order food and we were deliberately ignored...Whilst the moody barmaid continued to serve everyone else. Never coming back here ever. Don't recommend it unless you want to be ignored. Crap restaurant. Crap service.

Visited here at 6pm, Quite a few people but not packed, meal when it came was Good & Good value particularly for eating out in Edinburgh, HOWEVER took 1 Hour 20 minutes to arrive after order placed (3 of us), staff where very apologetic & gave us a free dessert, other customers where having the same problem, hope it was a One Off!! The wait spoiled the Experience!

I went for dinner before going to the cinema but went well in advance so we weren't in a rush. I ordered a medium rare steak which, after a 45 minute wait, was a well done steak when finally given to me. If the "supervisor" hadn't been so rude, I would've let it go, however, the man wearing all black with a lot of jewellery and piercings was so unbelievably rude, I had no patience left for him to give me excuses. I work in the industry and I know that FOH likes to blame the kitchen from time to time for their mistakes. Regardless of who's fault it was, he was horrific in handling the situation. He. Then tried to charge me for things that never even arrived and tried to get me to pay for the steak. I will only be back for drinks, if that. We have cineworld cards and are at fountain bridge often but I will not be back to eat for awhile. The Fountain across the road is much friendlier.

I've been here lots of times for a pub lunch. The food is always good, the bar staff are always very friendly and service is efficient. (Just like in most pubs in the UK, you order and pay for your food at the bar and it is then brought to your table.)

First time ever at this restaurant initially i thought wow good selection of food and great prices but when you dig deeeper there were so many added extras. The food was ok but not that hot it was quick perhaps that was the issue perhaps it was sitting waiting to be served rather than freshly cooked either way it was not as hot as we would like, also lacked atmosphere and wasnt busy. I dont usually comment on staff but onechap with facial peircings came over as a bjt scary and really didnt want to be there, if you dislike your work that much i suggest it is time for pastures new lad.We would not visit this bar again
