Our first stop in Edinburgh was the elephant cafe . Upon arrival at the cafe we were totally surprised that it is opened and that there was no queue . Waited excitedly to be seated and a young lady ushered us to a lovely window seats overlooking the street. Just as we were getting ourselves comfortable, another lady by the name Samiha came by and questioned “who gave you the table “ Honestly we were quite taken aback. Being a well travelled person of my age this was totally not acceptable and plain rude. The second episode was when I went to the cashier to ask if I should order at the counter , the same staff exaggeratedly commented in Spanish (I think) that I was impatient. The episode didn’t end here. Later the same lady, Samiha, found out that I was trying to get her name. She came back and challenged me lecturing me throughout that cafe is very “crowded” ; customers need to wait to be seated. The whole issue is we were ushered to the seats by the window! We did not just barged in! Honestly this kind of behaviour is totally not acceptable . To my worst horror i later found out she is the supervisor of the cafe ! A junior staff who had witnessed all this and was so sweet that she apologised profusely on behalf of the rude supervisor for my bad experience! Fine cafe but be warned of ill mannered supervisor !

Driven by the fame of being the bar where Harry Potter was written, it is located in Victoria Street, one of the most beautiful streets in Edinburgh, as well as famous because it recalls Diagon Halley (also Harry Potter) we went for breakfast, excellent cappuccino, delicious cakes and perfect scones! Normal prices.

The perfect spot for Harry Potter fans ! As a fan myself living in Scotland I have been wanting to stop by for years. Unfortunately the original shop is closed due to a fire but I would recommend having a look at the original building as it is just up from Victoria Street and around the corner. I didn't go up the stairs as i was short on time but i got a hot chocolate to take away and it was incredible ! Reasonably priced considering how hot of an attraction it is for Harry Potter fans and tourists alike. The only negative was the wait time for my order, I waited around 20 minutes outside in the cold but i understand it is a busy shop. Highly recommended!

A very nice café, quite a must for Harry Potter fans. So of course it is not the real café where the famous series of books was born, but it apparently retains the same furniture and the same spirit. I went there at rather odd hours (just before lunch and just after lunch) to drink hot chocolate so there weren't that many people. I didn't have to wait long in line both times and I was seated in less than 10 minutes but I think that at certain times you will have to be patient. The staff is quite friendly, I don't have any particularly negative feedback on it. The menu is quite extensive and the prices are a little high but not exaggerated either. I went back twice to have the hot chocolate, which I found good. The second time I even ordered a millionaire shortbread which, without being exceptional, was nice. It’s a place where you feel really good. I was lucky enough to be placed in front of the window both times, and the place is quite peaceful. However, I think there are rooms with many more tables that may be less pleasant. Overall, though, I had a great time. We don't necessarily receive 4G well in places, however. But it allows you to take the time to find yourself with yourself and observe future authors at work. In summary? A nice place, to see at least once if you are a Harry Potter fan. Expect a little wait to be seated.

The Elephant House Café, known as the birthplace of J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” series, is a must-visit for fans and food lovers alike. It’s where Rowling penned the initial chapters of her famous books. The café offers a unique menu, and their non-alcoholic Butterbeer is an absolute must-try—rich, delicious, and wonderfully creative. Their selection of cakes and pastries is equally delightful, perfect for pairing with your beverage. The café often has a queue, but it’s worth the wait, and they also offer takeaway options for those on the go. The interior is charmingly old-fashioned, adding to the cozy atmosphere. If you can, grab a seat by the wall windows for the best street views. The staff are friendly and attentive, enhancing the overall experience. Additionally, they sell Harry Potter-themed chocolates like frogs , making it a great spot to pick up souvenirs. Whether you’re a fan of the series or just looking for a great place to enjoy a treat, The Elephant House Café is a fantastic choice!

Just because it is the place where JK Rowling created Harry Potter, and that would be reason enough for it to be included in any tourist guide, the place alone gives you moments of tranquility having a tea and chatting with friends. For chronic readers, sit at their tables and dream that one day, right between those walls, a story was born that has proven to be one of the most beautiful and intense in the world of magic for children (and not so children ;-) Keep reading my reviews about Scotland, I hope you like them

Went here as HP fans. We came early to get a seat. The menu on the website isn’t up to date and they only offered baked potato to my mother who is gluten free which is poor. My sister and I ordered food while my mum just had a coffee. My mum then went to get herself breakfast as she was hungry so she paid the bill whilst my sister and I finished eating. As we left my sister confirmed my mother had paid the bill which the waitress acknowledged. Next thing the waitress shouts at my sister that we haven’t paid and rudely accuses her of trying to leave without paying. My sister explained my mother had paid but perhaps it hadn’t gone through so was prepared to pay again. The waitress was really rude and publicly humiliated my sister repeatedly shouting she was leaving without paying and getting her staff to stand there and say the same. My mother returned and proved she had paid - turns out the waitress had charged the wrong amount. The waitress was extremely rude and not apologetic in the slightest. It was disgusting behaviour. I hope she ashamed of herself and I will be telling everyone to avoid this place. Appalling behaviour and we will be writing to the manager. Edit in response to the owner’s response. The woman stated she had not accused my sister. This is not an apology. She also initially accused my mother of not paying when my mother had evidence on her phone of payment. I stand by the fact that the staff were unkind towards my sister without sufficient cause as we proved with our payments.

The new store is hot, crowded, tabletop is sticky, and some window tables are way too bright. Basically, they set seats as much as possible. Writtrees ignore ppl. He made me wait and after charging £7.80 for two coffees he asked me if I tipped him. Oh really??? Very angry about the treatment I receive and the food is not worth it. We were there about three weeks ago, and only just returned from our vacation in the UK. Out of all the places we visited in Scotland, England, and Ireland, this was the biggest letdown and the rudest waitress experience we have ever had in a café. Being a huge Harry Potter fan, I was eagerly anticipating this visit. However, when we arrived 90 minutes before closing, the waitress who greeted us rudely at the door said, "Sorry, we are full and likely won’t have any space." We asked how long the wait would be, as we didn't mind waiting, but she replied that they wouldn't have any room until closing and told us to leave before walking away. This seemed odd, so we stood there, confused, for a few minutes. During that time, at least two separate parties of three paid their bills and left. We asked the waitress again if they could accommodate us now, but she still said no, insisting they were very busy. I then walked over to another waitress, who instantly said, "Sure, let me get the table cleaned up!" After we were seated, multiple people left, and at least five separate parties of three to four people were seated within the next 20 minutes. We were shocked and annoyed that we had been told to leave when they clearly could accommodate so many people after us. We told another waitress about our experience, and she apologized on the rude waitress’s behalf and didn't let us pay for our order. However, the waitress who had been rude and seemingly discriminated against us (I presume it was due to our brown skin) was standing behind her, scrolling on her phone with no remorse or apology. It made our whole experience really crappy and could not enjoy what we came for. For a cafe that makes $$$ cause of the HP fame, it is highly disappointing that they don’t have staff that show any kindness, respect or warmth towards their customers.

Visited with family , food was good but had to wait then ask for cutlery, table 21 ruined it as constantly getting my chair banged into and my head bumped due to people wanting to take pictures of JK Rowling table ect , suggestion remove that table so gives space and give customers peaceful visit

Homemade butter beer next door to the Harry Potter shop! A great place to relax with a view of the Victoria street - a bit expensive tho, about 15£ for 2 butterscotch beers but lovely decor!

I recommend to visit this coffee place to all Harry Potter fans, since in The Elephant House J.K.Rowling wrote some of hwr books. Although the original Elephant House was destroyed by fire, the new one still has a great atmosphere including toilet which says "the way to the Ministry of Magic". :) There is also a nice view to Victoria Street, known also as Diagon Alley. However, I recommend to make a reservation in advance, since we had to wait about 15 mimutes to get a table. Also, we waited for quite a while (20-25 minutes) to be served and butterscotchbeer is a bit overpriced, that is why I am only giving 4 stars.

I ordered a butterbeer, which didn't taste as out of place as its reputation suggests. To be honest, it's probably wiser to take a photo op outside and leave.

For Harry POTTER fans, this place is where JK ROWLING wrote the Harry POTTER novels. You can drink tea there with a scone or other cakes. To do during the week to avoid the crowds and enjoy the atmosphere of the place.

This Cafe’s famous, but it’s the worst one I’ve ever been to. I understand we have a big team (with 8 adults) which may cause difficulties for tabling us. But, it doesn’t mean that we should be treated that rudely by your waitress. The lady who served us made funny faces when she heard that each of us wanted an ice cream and refused to serve us when we asked her to mind her attitude. Besides, the coffee was bad. The Scottish coffee we ordered only had a bitter flavour, with no cream or caramel added on it, just as it’s shown on the photo. The flavour of the ice creams was just at an average quality. I’m quite disappointed.

What a Magical place. I took my Harry Potter crazy, friend from England here and I'm glad I did. Located on Victoria Street this little restaurant is a not so obvious gem of the city. We went in for Coffee and cake, but got so much more. We sampled both Butter Beer options, the alcoholic and non alcoholic, with both being delightful on the first couple of sips but far too sweet for me in the end. I ordered the house filtered coffee and the shortbread, that's baked in house, and neither disappointed. (The shortbread is also shaped like a elephant) My friend had the carrotcake and I had the home made apple pie. The carrot cake was delicious with a good balance of density, moisture, and cream cheese topping. The apple pie was also tasty and well spiced, however I'd have preferred a crisper shortcrust. The staff were very welcoming to everyone that came through the door. The Canadian server (I didn't catch her name) was particularly plesent and took time to ask other customers about their day and where they were visiting from. Overall a fantastic place to be if you enjoy the world of Harry Potter, love food, and want a welcoming place to rest.

The service here is slow. Not they want you to relax and enjoy your day experience slow. Just slow. It took forever for someone to come get our drink order. We ordered a starter and some sandwiches, everything came together. The cheese on the nachos wasn’t fully melted. Cute place for Harry Potter fans but that’s it. Don’t go there for the service.

I learned after the fact that this was not the original place, as the original burned down. Having said that, I got the elephant club and the portion was huge and the taste exceeded my expectations. For Harry Potter fans, yes it's worth going to. Make sure to sit at the table Jk Rowling sat at and take a picture. For non Harry Potter fans, go and enjoy the good food and atmosphere 5🌟 experience PS - I was disappointed with the butterbeer. It was small and warm. Still not disappointed that I tried it.

Very cool to see the desk J.K. Rowling wrote the Harry Potter books at! The original Café was affected by a fire and so they opened a new one in this location, but they claim the desk she used was saved - which is very cool if true! I got a butter beer to keep in tune with the Harry Potter aura in the Café, it came with whipped cream on top and tasted a bit like cidona which was interesting. We sat at the window and the view was beautiful. Bathroom could do with feminine hygiene products. Lovely postcards, tote bags, and other merchandise.

It took them a while to come to serve us, but the rest was very positive. We r They gave us a bar style table in front of the window overlooking Victoria St. We ordered 2 cappuccinos. £7.30 You enter through a small door, which leads to a staircase. In case you like to have something there, downstairs you can order takeout. Nicely decorated. Clean bathrooms.

The most uncomfortable seats! I paid £80, but it was definitely not worth it. Even if you request a comfortable seat, they won’t let you sit at a decent table. We were crammed in, sitting too close to other people. The food wasn’t good either. Save your money and go somewhere better than this place

Poor customer service. Didn't have what we wanted. Staff spoke very poor English so struggled to communicate this and worse treated us like an inconvenience. I'm sure on a different day they'd be fine but on this day it was not good.

Poor quality, expensive food. Update, it only gets worse. Food variety and quality is worse than ever, does every sandwich need to have onion in it? Coffee prices are well above average. Staff clueless.

Good pastry We had the scones and they were delicious On the other hand, the service leaves something to be desired. In fact when you come home it’s hello, what do you want? You don't have time to think, it has to go quickly, the staff is rushing you. I advise you to eat there so you can sit down and have more time to read the menu than to take away.
