I ordered an iced matcha and after I tasted it I felt that something was odd. I thought that the powder was just not mixed well but shortly I realised that it had cinnamon in it. And not just the cinnamon powder but chunks of cinnamon as well. When I asked a staff member about it she said that matcha powder that they are using contains cinnamon. In my opinion this is a thing you are supposed to warn your customers about or at least state in the menu. In the end, I got an overpriced drink(4.80£) which did not satisfy me and I didn’t even get an apology for the inconvenience. The atmosphere in the cafe is very nice so that’s a shame that my experience here was so poor, doesn’t make me want to come back. Would not recommend this place for matcha-lovers.

We had a lot of great food in Edinburgh - and their breakfast rates right up there as the best. The menu is not large but the food prepared is of excellent quality and the flavours are balanced really well.

such a lovely place, the staff are fab and the food and drinks are great, definitely one of the best cafes in the new town. the only negative thing i can say is that it can get quite busy so make sure you get down early to make sure you can get a table!

The service was good, a little bit slow at first to take the order. The staff was really nice The decoration was very nice and cozy! The taste of the food was delicious and good quality. The proportions were okay The quality price ratio was good, not too expensive and not cheap but the quality is very good Maybe I would add a bit of variety in the brunch, some eggs, pancakes ?

Ambient is super cute, but the service was super slow. If you have take away, it will be in appropriate timing, but if you sit… i was waiting for half an hour for a coffee.

Can’t say enough good things about this delightful cafe. We stayed at Eden Locke (above) and visited here every day we were in Edinburgh. The staff made us feel right at home and were so lovely each day. It was one of the highlights of our trip to catch up with Sean, Harry, Darryl, and Malcom in particular, who not only made exceptional coffee drinks and cocktails, but offered insight about the city and places to try for dinner or drinks. Loved it here!

Great space, great cake disappointing service. Popped in yesterday for take out cake for a housebound friend who lives 200m away. It’s mid afternoon and the only option is parsnip, great two pieces please. Paid the £8, wandered the 300m, opened the box and the photo says it all. Cake was too warm and butter cream was greasy and sliding off, cake dumped in the box, not a good look. Fortunately it tasted nice but for others use a bigger box or two if necessary. Such a shame.

Visited for a brunch at the weekend. Interior is fantastic, very stylish and clean, a lot of thought has gone into the design. Unfortunately not as much care has gone into the food. Menu is threadbare and limited, upon ordering a ham and cheese croissant I was disappointed to find out there was no ham left. Instead I ordered a croissant and toast, both of which were poor quality - supermarket level - and very overpriced, the croissant was not heated, and the toast portion small with the pieces airy. Partner order a sandwich, with uneven ingredients and a tomato without the core removed. On the plus side the coffee was nice. Overall felt like the food was an afterthought, for the price I would like to be much better taken care of, value for money was just not there.

This used to be the best place to stop for a coffee and bite to eat on George St however they recently changed the cafe and installed a huge bench table through the middle for those using laptops. Word has got around, and it now resembles an overcrowded office filled with keyboard warriors nursing one cup of coffee for 3 hours whilst making use of the free city centre toilets. I love dogs but this place is full of them. It can be quite stressful for dogs in noisy cafes. Many dogs (not all) can't relax and are constantly pacing, pulling, barking and getting worked up by the noise around them - especially the coffee grinder. My friends and I tend to avoid cafes that are known for dog overcrowding as it's really difficult watching owners trying to rein in their furry friends - and half of us have dogs ourselves. I've visited twice in the past 10 days and both times there have been huge barking fights between dogs. There's also a mass of bowls and overspilt water on the floor that you need to try and avoid killing yourself over just to get to a table. Why can't they just one large bowl outside and dog owners use that? Really sad to say goodbye to this south facing cafe but we're now moving on to a new spot :(

I’d like to prefix this by stating I never leave negative reviews. I’ve worked in hospitality for 5 years (since I was 17) and know that everyone can have a bad day, but the service I had today was pretty shameful, the type I’d never imagine giving to a paying customer. My friend and I were looking to have a coffee and I knew that Mavyn is open later into the evening. From the moment we arrived, we could tell the guy serving us didn’t want to be there - he made no mistake in hiding this. No niceties or anything, and when he brought our drinks to the table it was more of a clumsy slam to the table. We ordered a second round of coffees and he brought my (lactose intolerant) friend a regular milk latte. Before dropping it down he did realise the mistake at making a normal latte, to which my friend confirmed. She said “oh no, I’m really sorry. It’s so annoying when that happens - I’m sure I had said!” to lighten the mood. To which the waiter responded “you didn’t say.” At what point in customer service is it ever appropriate to verbally place blame onto a customer? It didn’t matter if she had said oat or not. Especially when the problem was so easily fixed - it wasn’t busy, we were one of 2 tables in. I truly accept that it is an annoying mistake to make, and to his credit he did remake the latte, but at the cost of making my friend feel really uncomfortable. I’m sorry for the excessive story telling here and I do understand I’ll be branded as a ‘Karen’ for writing this overly long complaint but it was just a disappointing experience.

I have been going here since the place was one and the same with the hotel - now the management is separate. The Italian manager is friendly and knows what he's doing: very high standards of coffee, very nice space, inside and outside. Look forward to going also for a glass of wine or a cocktail, and snacks.

Food was incredible, service was fast, the location is beautiful, and the decor and atmosphere of the place is lovely. Leonardo was so friendly and made us feel so comfortable and welcome. We felt very safe in terms of Covid, all staff had masks on and we could see used tables being cleaned thoroughly by the staff. We will definitely be back soon.

Popped in for a coffee with my wife. The service and atmosphere was amazing. The two girls serving were a delight and their names are Julia and Stella. Plus the coffee was excellent.

My mum and son visited the restaurant on 6th July. Unfortunately, my mum took unwell and an ambulance had to be called. My son was extremely upset to see his grandma unwell but said the staff were absolutely excellent making my mum comfortable and supporting both him and my mum. They actually closed the restaurant whilst they waited for the ambulance and refused to take any money for the meal they had started eating. I want to say a massive thank you for the kindness shown to my mum and son, it really meant a lot. From what both my mum and son fed back, the staff were outstanding, fetching my mum cushions to make her comfortable and making cups of tea. You are all an absolute credit and so compassionate. Thank you so much.

We’ve been coming here every week for more than two years now so they must be doing something right! Great coffee, delicious sandwiches and home made cakes and friendly and efficient staff. Can particularly recommend the New Yorker sandwich, croque monsieur and the fudge brownies and carrot cake.
