Mayflower in Colchester

After having to call 3 times to ask where our order was the food arriving after 2hours.The beef curry we ordered didn’t turn up it was chicken curry which was watery and no taste .The chicken balls were soggy and tasteless. Sadly we have used this restaurant for many years we will never be going back.

Pork was dry, everything bland they should have left it how it used to be when there was any taste to the food, used to be decent value now it isn’t

Was nice, now nasty greasy filth. Chef obviously had to move on. Now trip advisor says I need 100 characters? Ok. It was my favourite takeaway and now the last time I received it it was disgusting. Greasy filth that made me feel sick. The dog wouldn’t eat it after stealing the leftovers. I wouldn’t have given it to him. How’s that for characters?

I ordered again from the mayflower tonight and once yet again I was not disappointed, food was delivered on time well no actually it was early and this is amazing as most restaurants can’t ever find our addresss but 4 orders now and not one of the drivers have had any problems finding us so instead of driving around for 20 minutes trying to find us the food was hot , was absolutely beautiful in flavour and plenty of it so thank you mayflower I will never go anywhere else

Ordered food tonight for delivery to us ,recommended by a neighbour so thought go for it .Dissapointed ,ordered chicken chow mein,boiled plain rice, chicken fried rice ,chicken and mushrooms, battered sweet sour chicken ,vegetable spring rolls ,chips ,curry sauce and mushroom foo young .Everything apart from sweet and sour was just salty ,so very salty ,same flavour to everything.Found chow mein very very dry .chips so salty and soggy ,as was the vegetable spring rolls . I don't quite understand why everything was so heavily salted ? No other flavour to the food and it's the first time ive had mushroom foo young that way ,very pinky colour and like rubber with salt taste .wont be ordering again nearly £40 and it went in the bin ,a weekly treat ordering in ,ruined the eve .

When i first ever went here the food was lovely . since then nothing but problems last time i went in noodles was dry and beef tasted like it had sat there for hours . this time just got beef again and wasnt cooked never again

Placed a home delivery as I have many times before. The wrong item was delivered + when I called to let them know the employee who answered the phone spent 10 minutes arguing that I had got my order wrong!!! This the same order as I always order + even explaining that I don't even like what they delivered couldn't convince him they'd sent the wrong thing. Won't be ordering again- even Pizzahut admits when it's wrong + give a full refund. Not so with Mayflower- and it's not cheap!!

I have had food from here before and was ok but tonight the food was inedible, complained which I don’t normally do and they sent the same dish again inedible and now feel very sick

Lovely food, reasonable prices. Would recommended. Delivery time is normally around an hour which isn’t to bad as the food is worth the wait

The food is amazing and so full of flavour. Definitely one of the best Chinese take aways in Colchester. Staff are friendly, and food is always delivered within time stated!

The food was quick, so no idea why it was so cold. The duck looked like road kill and didn't taste like any meat I'd ever eaten before! Cold and dry too, and obviously very old. When we complained, we were offered free duck next time, fair enough but won't be ordering from here again!

We have regularly ordered the special vegetarian set menu for two, every month or two, for several years. Tonight's was truly disappointing. I was advised that they had a new menu, and that they now had a £1 delivery charge - taking the total cost from a previous £13.50 to now £15.20. Fair enough, costs increase. But now the fried noodle portion had been halved in size (and no mushrooms at all), and another dish (broccoli in black bean sauce) had been removed entirely. So now 3 dishes instead of 4, and one of those had been halved in size and had one of the main ingredients removed. That said, the dishes were perfectly nice - but given the sudden change, we will be ordering our vegetarian set meal from somewhere else in future.

Have used this Chinese for years and sadly the last few have been disappointing. After waiting for an hour and a half + the food has arrived and been very unenjoyable. The food seems to be very greasy with more sauce than meat and dishes which were once delicious have changed, like the shredded chicken and the ribs have definitely gone downhill. Cheaper to go to a restaurant with nicer food.

Recently tried the mayflower after another local Chinese declined our order. I was extremely impressed with the quality of the food, in particular the ribs and the duck. The customer service was fabulous, we got a free bottle of coke and a free starter. Will definitely order from here again.

Don't use often, maybe10 times a year for 10 years. We have the vegetarian for 2 and always comes within 45 mins unless Saturday night. Always hot. Curry not great but its Chinese!! Never too much onion and enough for lunch for one the next day.

I have used this place several times since my last review a year ago, when I thought it okay. I've changed my mind. The food is simply tastless, The spcial curry has no guts to it and the fried rice is simply boiled rice with some gubbings thrown in. Whenever I ask them to deliver to back door, they ignore me and ring the front door. The chicken and meat are all uniform shape and clearly not home produced. Dont trust uniform looking meat! Plus its expensive - what happened to the free bottle of coke and free delivery? The Beijing is way better quality. Mayflower has sunk and besides, the place look grotty as do many of the takeaways on the Hythe. I was a big fan of Mayflower for many years but not anymore.

This takeaway never disappoints! The satay chicken, kung po chicken, BBQ dry ribs amongst much more is always hot and delicious!! Only grumble is delivery is often over an hour and a half!!

We had to wait 1 hour 30 minutes..which we did not mind..but when the food arrived it was cold..the driver must have done a lot of other deliveries before he came to us..the food was OK but we had to heat it up in the oven..

The chinese takeaway we normally use was closed for holiday...so we gave the Mayflower another try...and the food was much...

Nothing special meal ruined by fake fried rice! After some 15 years using this takeaway I have decided to find another. When I ask for fried rice I expect it to be fried. Fried rice in Mayflower used to be exactly the same as fried rice I've eaten Guangzhou. However, over the last five years there has been a slow decline in the amount of oil they fry it in and now you simply get boiled rice tossed in stuff. It's horribly dry and snow white in colour. Considering prices have increased significatnly in the last 7 years, there is now a charge for delivery and no free soft drink when you spend over a certain amount, there is no excuse for crappy, ersatz standard food. You've just lost a long term customer! Stop ripping customers off!

Food it always tasty and piping hot and fresh. Delivery service has always been prompt. 5 star rating on hygiene.

I've used Mayflower for many years. It might not be the best Chinese TA in the area but this is reflected in the slightly cheap prices. Service is quick and the food has never dissappointed.

Got a takeaway from here,as could not park near our usual place.Food was below par,no were near as tasty as we normally get.Will NOT return.

I ordered chicken friend rice which was bland, beef and black bean sauce which had terrible cuts of beef ridiculously chewy, Singapore rice noodles which was tasteless, definitely one to AVOID unless you like chewy bland food, disappointing as it smells very good from outside

Visted this chinese takeaway instead of our usual one on Saturday and what a mistake the food was awful!The chicken in the curry was cheap cuts of horrible meat and the sauce was bland. We also ordered a beef dish and the meat was chewy even the prawn crackers had a funny taste.I would not recommend this place to anyone it was the worst meal we had eated in a long while.

Very very poor food. Take my advice and look elsewhere. Very bad service and was disappointed because it used to be very good.
