A superbly run traditional fish& chip shop. Only counter service. No tables. The chips were really well done and brown. The fish was white and flaky and just fell apart. We dine on fish and chips watching Mansfield Town football across the country. Not many places can beat this fish and chip shop. Price was very reasonable, service superb and we were offered a vodka. Cheers! Brilliant!

The people who own this place are absolutely fantastic, so nice & cheery. But, what an expensive place. Would go here more if it was cheaper but fish &chips here are a luxury not a cheap takeaway. Can buy elsewhere for £4 for fish and £2 for chips which are just as nice

The food is amazing from this chippy , the chips must be cooked twice as they are so crispy and fluffy inside staff are friendly and go the extra mile even when it’s a busy Service, awesome awesome awesome!

Called again on a busy Friday tea time, traditional for a proper English tea! Orders taken when you got inside so freshly cooked and delicious. Can’t get the portions right, a large chips was far too much for two of us! Usually blitz the peas in the microwave fir a bit but we both thoroughly enjoyed our meals.

Stopped off on the way home last night for fish and chips and got to say they were the best we have had for a long time. Everything was cooked to order and the fish was fresh and tasted superb. Will definitely recommend this establishment

My brother and I always have fish and chips at Matties on Friday night every time we visit Barrow. The lads that run the place are always cheerful and have a few jokes with the clientele while taking orders. The fish is always fresh and cooked while you wait. They also do scampi, which my mum loves.

Had fish chips and peas, excellent, haddock tonight but they do often get cod in and stick that up on the menu. Fish large and freshly cooked, batter not too thick, nice peas, we share a portion of chips as one each would be too much. So £11.70 for two fish, two peas and one chips, great value too. This was better than the famed Andy’s we tried a few weeks ago!

Visited here whilst on an overnight stay in Barrow after reading the reviews of all the local chippies, we were not disappointed. The chips were crisp and tasty, the batter was crunchy and not at all oily and the fish was so fresh and flaky, the best fish I’ve had for a long time. The staff were really friendly and helpful and there was good banter. I only wish we lived closer but if we are ever in the area again I will be heading straight back here, thank you for making our stay even better!

German cousins over for a week and that means one thing Mattie’s fish and chips. Lovely staff, generous portions and beautiful fish and chips, pies etc All freshly fried in good oil and arrive to plate lovely and hot. One of the best chippies in Barrow-in-Furness. Very well recommended. Faultless

We haven’t stopped here for a while but sneaked in tonight. I’ve always found the two Polish guys very friendly, and very keen on football. Fish cooked to order and was beautiful, nice chips and peas, but one portion of chips (normal size, not large) was more than enough for the two of us. Matties is always consistent and we will continue to keep calling here. Understandably The price has steadily risen but it is still half the price of city fish and chips!

Rude staff, didn’t like the way the man reacted to us ordering scampi and chips, ended up asking him if he had a problem with that. Very unprofessional, So annoyed 😠

Visitamos el primer tomo el sábado por la noche, el pescado se cocinó a pedido (ligeramente maltratados que solicitamos) y también tenía papas fritas, guisantes y salsa de curry.

La comida se prepara a pedido, sin embargo, la calidad de la comida no es tan buena considerando la espera y se prepara con productos frescos. Have been going to Mattie's for a long time right back to Mattie's the original owner and have never been disappointed so the only place we use even the pensioners special could feed two

Bought fish and chips hear for the whole family, grand kids the lot, reasonably priced, great service and very friendly and helpful staff. The quality excellent and portions decent. Its very popular and parking can be a pain sometimes but be patient. Its a popular chippie so be prepared to wait a short while, the staff are pretty quick. Very clean, with an extensive menu which is displayed clearly.

I was pleasently surprised at the 'regular' size of the fish and portion of chips.

Called in to Matties, as it's quite close to the football ground, and I had time to spare before the match. This is an excellent fish & chip shop, with an extensive menu, which includes some tempting veggie options. Really enjoyed the food, which was delicious, with decent sized portions, and of good value. Will definitely return when back in Barrow.

Battered sausage and chips hit the spot. In fact I left some in the car while I went in the cinema and ate them 2 1/2 hours later stone cold. Best cold chips I've ever eaten. Better than some fresh ones you get.

I visit here when in Barrow visiting my mum as nearest chip shop. Having said that the fish is always good and lovely and white with a crisp batter. The chips are not my favourites. The place is spotless and staff always pleasant.

We hadn’t been here for over a year but after Turkey Risotto last night fancied a change. Was busy so all freshly cooked, beautiful flakey cod with not too much batter tasty peas and chips. We get two fish, large peas and one portion of chips which easily does the two of us. We will definitely be back again sooner.

We had a mixture of fish, chips and sausage and chips and we were all please with our meals. They were really hot and all the food was delicious. Will definitely recommend this chip shop.

Fresh fish fried to order, thin crispy batter with no floppy floury wet underside sitting on the fish like you get in a lot of places. Generous, chunky white flaky flesh. It really was delicious. Large portion of chips. No black bits, no green bits, no overcooked or undercooked bits. Absolutely perfect. Much much nicer than the local chippy. I wish they did delivery. On my first visit I asked for haddock and was politely told that it was the only fish they do. Should have looked at the menu! Smashing fish , batter was good too. Nice portion of chips.

This has to be the best chippie in town. Although a little more expensive, it is worth the extra. Staff always pleasant ant the fish and chips are lovely. We will always use this chippie now even though it is furthest away from our house.

There are several fish and chip shops in Barrow and while this one is not the worst it is not the best either.The service and food quality did improve when the Poles took it over some years ago. However,on our most recent visit the chips were pale, the fish was nice but batter was hard and tough and oh so greasy that the fish was sticking to the paper when we undid the wrapping.Food was not cooked to order but came out of the oven,only seen them cook to order when very busy. there were a lot of chips though, more so than from Andys.

100 % plus visited again on my most recent trip to Barrow, excellent fish and chips well presented in a box with salt and vinegar, pleasant staff all in all deserve support and thanks again for excellent products and service

Theses have to be the best fish & chips ever! They really take some beating & are reasonably priced. Service is friendly & the cooking facilities are spotless. It is takeaway only.

Do you want a chippy or or a place that is above that Ok you have to wait but food cooked fresh to demand and while staff cooking constantly cleaning Fish batter crisp plus fish option of size and a free plastic bag does it get better not any where I know

Soon as paper opened could see batter looked as though it had been refried. So greasy. Little fish inside, what there was dried out. If I had been nearby would have took it back. Nasty...... chops were okay and luckily so was the curry sauce. Won't return here. Whoever served it up must have known it was well below standard.

good portions always no negatives with this chip shop. They do a pensioner portion for the older person.

Great fish and chips from hard working and friendly staff. This used to be our local chippy. It isn't any more but we still go out of our way to go here for fish and chips rather than go anywhere else.

I recently bought chips sausage and curry, some of the chips were hard the sausage much of been the cheapest money can buy and the curry? Well was there any? Couldn't taste curry!!

I want to give this more than just 2 stars, but unfortunately the quality of fish and chips was below average. In some parts the batter was very nice and crispy, but in others it was doused in grease! The chips were also soggy. Equally, there was no service with a smile either!!! Make sure you bring cash as well - no cards taken here.

I have been several times yet each experience seems to have differed. Most times it has been nice but nothing outstanding. The staff are relatively friendly.

Been coming here regularly over the last five decades! The current management is the best yet and the fish and chips are excellent. Usually cod is provided but the portions of chips are American sized! We share one regular chips and get a fish each. We will still keep coming back, but probably not for another five decades!

Great tasting fish & chips 1 portion of chips is enough for 2 people even those who don't really like to share.

Tried a chippy on Walney this evening since we were over that part of town, wish we hadn't bothered and should have gone to Matties instead. Always decent fish size, nicely cooked and served by friendly staff. We share 1 portion of chips for 2 and a large mushy peas each ....yum!

We stop here regularly after dropping off the grandkids. A fish each and share a portion of chips, still can't manage all the chips. Very pleasant Polish manager who is very keen on football! This will still be our regular stop.

Matties chip shop has long been the best in Barrow, Dalton and Ulverston - but something has changed. For the last three visits the chips taste very distinctly of fish. Matties was always great for clean tasting, fresh, delicious chips and prided itself on saying they were suitable for vegetarians. The fishy taste in the last few visits has been unmistakable and unpleasant, so sadly we won't be going again for a while.

This is the best fish and chip shop in barrow and I would recommend everybody to try here. The chips are just amazing and the portions are extremely generous (you could feed 3 off one portion)

Matties serves high quality fish and chips in generous portions at an relatively low cost. The servers are friendly and very efficient. In addition to traditional fish & chips, a wide range of other dishes are available including chicken in various guises, beef burgers, pies, etc. it is without doubt the best fish bar I have ever visited, hence my numerous visits over the past couple of years.
