The service here is consistent and amazing. I really do feel comfortable bringing clients here, having meetings and just enjoying a space that isn't noisy. The ping pong table is a great way to relax after work.

We usually love Matthews Yard and had a great time as always until my partner, who has a fatal nut allergy, ordered a vanilla milkshake. This was not signposted as containing any nut or legume risk or contamination, but upon having a sip my partner then suffered an extremely severe and potentially fatal allergic reaction which luckily we were able to address in time. Horrific experience.

More than a coffee bar and not quite a restaurant. Located well in West Croydon on the corner site of the former Maplins store, We have been there twice , late morning on Sundays. Very young staff, as were many of the customers (except us!). I had the mushrooms on toasted sourdough bread (and would enjoy again). Fruit juice turned out to be a ice cream drink (a bit chilly for me in early Spring). Seating is at longish tables and basic chairs. Loos were upstairs and not used by us

They have new people who's not efficient and very slow. I must say the regular workers aren't better. They make you wait more than half an out for just a tea, seriously how long it takes to put hot water in a cup? Is been a while that they don't have some of the food on the menu. The chef called sick or late several times so NO FOOD. If you order chip patty they give you just the chips and they charge you the same, basically because you are already paid, and when I complain they were like:awww well... They do not sort out the problem, they don't fix it or give you something free or discount, NOTHING. You have to deal with it. The service is pretty bad, you might not notice if you go one time but if you try to be a regular you might just decide not to come back, wich could be the right thing to do. I do not recomend this place.

Since its opening Matt's Yard has never delivered either consistent food entertainment or even decent toilets. It was a scruffy place with a bunch of broken old furniture that's deemed to be 'cool' or 'Shabby Chic' it wasn't, it was just shabby. So poorly run that it was just an endless stream of independent traders that all did a runner in the night eventually. Yet its constantly asking for money, government aid and claiming itself to be 'non-profit'and an 'essential service' to the community. What it is exceptionally good at is interpreting what local government like to see and targeting that funding and community interest to gain either funding, sympathy or support. This is not a a 'Non profit' enterprise, people may not be claiming a profit but they are living off of it and have built an entire income stream from this. The original building itself has been sold off to developers it was owned by a 'Christian Church', ironically also a 'Non Profit' Charity that has made millions of pounds in donations over the years which is how it purchased the building this money has now gone to a very small group of individuals.Don't believe everything you read about its contributions to society nor the constant bleating from it's very PR Savvy founder.

I was 8 months pregnant during my first visit and have been back since with the baby and found it to be a push chair-friendly, breast feeding-friendly place. Staff are very engaging. There is a nice selection of beers on tap and in bottles. Not the place for artisan coffee but has a nice atmosphere. Lots of art and has table top football and table tennis. Having eaten at '5 Guys', 'Meat Liquor', & 'Bukowski', I can say wholeheartedly that Matthews Yard cooks the best burgers in Croydon. My 'Boozer', a double patty with bacon, cheddar, gherkin and onion relish, accompanied by double cooked Cajun fries, was so tasty that I had to order another burger, 'The Classic', which was just as satisfying. The ingredients are fresh, and there is no acid burn from reused oil found in some of the aforementioned establishments. It might be upmarket but it's still better value - and vastly superior - than anywhere else in Croydon. The craft beers on tap are fantastic, the vibe is great with outdoor seating, and it's a challenge to leave this place. Just off Surrey Street Market, you would think you were in Hoxton or Shoreditch it is that cool. Absolutely first rate!

The menu is awesome with so much choice (I have no special dietary requirements or allergies). I had the Get Stacked which was simply awesome! There's really not many brunch restaurants in Croydon, plenty of coffee shops and cafes but no real brunch places. I recently held my 50th birthday party at Hoodoos venue in Matthews Yard. The room has a warm welcoming atmosphere and is great if you prefer a more quirky setting than say a corporate type hotel or church hall. The facilities are all you need for a wonderful night. An excellent sound system, good lighting, small stage, tasty buffet and small but well-run bar. Richard and John were very helpful and accommodating as I formulated my plans for this landmark celebration. On the day/eve, their calm manner kept me calm as my party host nerves kicked in. All my guests said how much they enjoyed the atmosphere, food and drink. The cost was more reasonable than comparable venues in Croydon. I thoroughly recommend contacting the Hoodoos team if you have a celebration coming up!!

I walked in and went straight to the counter just to ask if it was ok to sit anywhere I wanted while I waited for a friend to join me. I waited at the counter for over 5 mins whilst 2 of them served ONE customer and essentially acted as though they hadn't seen more or were too busy to smile / nod to acknowledge that they had seen me. Even when they had finished dealing with the customer they still didn't even make eye contact with me, just started to clear up the counter and do other things even though I had stood right next to the customer that they had just served. I had to say 'excuse me' before anyone looked at me directly and then asked if it was ok to take up a couple of tables. No smile, No good morning, no hello. Just... Yeah. With an extremely blank stare. I sat down and waited for my friend and frankly felt so uncomfortable that I didn't even want to order a drink for myself. My friend arrived and ordered for us (she herself had experienced similar service the first time she came). The coffee was DISGUSTING. And when we left there was no 'Bye. Thanks for coming'. The thing I noticed is that they were extremely friendly with what appeared to be their regulars but very cold towards people who I could tell had never been there before. Very odd. I will never go back there again. Also, the tables and chairs were very dirty. They seemed to think that they were so cool and edgy that they didn't need to be polite or friendly. This is the 2nd time that I have hear of them treating people like this. Awful customer service.

However, there is no ventilation system in the coffee shop. They are cooking hamburgers and fries in the same room. This produce a smoky and a greasy smelling. I can not get rid of the stinky smell of my clothes. On the other hand, the hot chocolate was just powder with milk...pretty average. I had to much expectations for the positive reviews. This place is a quirky little burger and lunch spot, great for coffee too. There's a burger & beer place that is always there, the other side varies from month-month but is basically a sandwich/ lunch/ coffee & cake stall. We had burgers but the other side looked nice too. The beef and veggie burgers are both really good sized, cooked nicely and with great flavour and texture. You can pick rosemary or cajun fries, I had rosemary which were really nice - a bit like roast potatoes in chip form. It's nice to have something different but would be good if they also offered a plain version. For eating out not bad value - £7-8 per person, and the atmosphere is pretty good. It has one of those mismatched, random vibes. Busy on the weekends, but it's a weekend kinda place - will probably pop in while shopping if I need a break, good to support local independent shops rather than chains.

What cafe only starts serving food at 11am? This one! Food was very poor, waited 45 minutes, staff more interested in their beards and top knots than being friendly, never received a single 'hello' or 'goodbye thank you for your custom', coffee was poor, there was a random cat wandering around the place that the staff didn't seem to mind, environmental health would love to hear that they let animals into a food Establishment.3 in our group, they messed up one order, completely forgot about second order, and my order was cold! We were only people in there when we arrived! How can you mess up 3 orders. I struggled to eat half of mine, I left the rest, and keep in mind we were starving, hungover group who would've eaten almost anything.Overpriced, poor quality, poor service, tries to hard to be trendy, when its supposed to be a cafe. Since discovering Matthews Yard there is nowhere I would rather go in Croydon whether I fancy a quick coffee and a very generous slab of home made cake, a quick, satisfying, healthy bowl of pasta for lunch, or an evening treat of a very fine burger and chips washed down with a glass of red wine. I try to eat a vegan diet wherever possible which can be a real challenge when eating out. Matthews Yard have always been able to accommodate this and don't look at me like I'm an alien from outer space when I enquire. But more than this Matthews Yard feels like a home from home, casual and comfy like your favourite slippers. Over time I have begun to recognise faces and make friends. They also offer various live music events, varied and changing artwork on display and weekly life drawing sessions. I love this place. Other parts of London might be able to take this kind of creative, relaxing space for granted, but Croydon is not exactly spoiled in this area - having said that, I've never been anywhere quite like it and my feeling is that it's a bit of a one-off. And the fact that it's in Croydon - an area which, while it has it's challenges, I'm very fond of - makes it extra special. I've been coming here for a couple of years now and have witnessed all its (many!) transformations; I'm always excited by the energy and commitment of those who run it and the sorts of things that happen within its walls, and I'm always made to feel at home. Tucked away off of Surrey Street in Croydon is the most unlikely place for a town that doesn't have the best reputation in London. Being a resident in Croydon has many benefits and there are loads of great traditional restaurants but you do miss out on the exciting cafes, bars and pop-ups that populate trendier parts of the Capital such as Brixton, Balham, or Vauxhall. The center of town has long lacked a relaxed place for hip young things to drink imported beers and admire creative works; this may make Matthews Yard sound pretentious but it isn't and you should definitely visit it. Matthews Yard serves as a venue for a whole variety of vendors who operate out of the large and varied space so the current set up could change in future but they would be wise to keep something similar in place as regulars will want to know there is always somewhere to go for a relaxed bite to eat and a nice beer. The franchise that provides food for lunch & dinners is called Brgr & Beer, they provide exactly that and it is fantastic. The burgers are generously served in a basket with fries, very tasty and great value for a casual dining experience. The breakfast/lunch franchise is called Rise N Shine but I haven't tried this yet but it certainly looks the part with delicious teas, coffees and breakfast foods on offer. My 2 biggest criticisms would be that, whilst the beer selection is amazing and enough to satisfy any aficionado, it is made up of imported bottles so the prices aren't cheap, meaning you could easily have two bottles that end up costing more than your burger. This wouldn't be a problem in a central London venue but it does seem to jar against the great value of the food and the relaxed Croydon venue, the addition of a tapped beer would solve this meaning you would be more likely to spend more time there enjoying the surroundings. Secondly, I would love to see the menu expand slightly to offer a few other options in burgers, sides, and alternative main meals. These are small criticisms though and should not discourage anyone from visiting, even if you only wander in to have a look round the venue and art gallery when passing through on your trip to shop in Croydon.

This old warehouse area of Croydon has had a cultural makeover. This super cafe, very laid back with wooden tables, a long bar, on which is a huge selection of leaf teas, and squishy sofas, is run by 'can do' young staff, offering great tea, coffee, cakes (what a selection) and snacks and until the bar is open, an Italian bottled beer can be consumed. It felt very trendy, definitely THE place to be. And an art exhibition was being curated as we sat there and we were allowed a sneak preview. Definitely a place to be seen and to feel the vibes.

We were very pleasantly surprised to have a chicken burger and vegetarian burger that was actually very nice together with nice chips. Some nice coffee as well resulted in a good lunch. Very impressed.

Visited Matthews Yard to see a play in July 2015, had tea and cake during the interval. The cake was very nice and I found this place different from the rest of Croydon, quite an oasis.

Just went in for a sandwich at lunch time. Amazing doorstep and delicious sandwich made from fresh and tasty bread. Unusual and relaxed and spacious place. Wifi available but in my experience signal not that strong, however lots of people there working on their laptops. Nice mix of mum's and working people. Quiet and comfortable.

I have been a few times to Matthews Yard but never persoanlly ordered, gave cash if a friend went up for a warm dring but never food. Before Jan 2015 was impressed with the staff and level of service, watching my colleagues enjoy their food, everything looked lovely.....I never ate due to not being hungry at that particular time of day but non-the-less impressed. Then I had to go and destroy the illusion.....apparently there has been a change of managers 0_0. I noticed the huge cobweb just above our table, the celings are high and so I guess this could be over looked. But on this psrticular day i was hungry.....so wish i was'nt. the grill that they have been toasting peoples sandwiches on was filthy, the kitchen area just behind the counter server was filthy with boxes and all kinds of items just dumped there.....in amounst was my lemon in a bag of lemons for my lemon and honey tea, which may i add was awful. Grubby....messy and unclean is all i can say about the counter area which does make me wonder about the kitchen where food is cooked.....Im assumming the kitchen area just behind the counter is for superfious items like empty food boxes..and yes the wash up area. The young man serving seemed to be overwhelmed without the back up service he once had, and yes the service has suffered. I am not sure what the new management was thinking with these paper cups...ok you can get more hot beverage per serving but the establishment looses a certain charm with paper cups...infact why such a huge change..!! I thought i found a gold but its just fools gold....I will not be returning.

I love this place. I work from home and love go here for a morning coffee while doing a bit of shopping in Surrey Street Market. They put a lot of love into everything they do here and the coffee is great!

Arty, thinking people, good coffee. Beer is rather pricey. They have comedy and art events there. Sometimes sample cake giveaways. I love the place. Also they have burgers in the evening.

On a recent visit me and my partner decided to try breakfast here after checking reviews out on trip advisor. Positives - really like the venue. It's quirky and different for Croydon. The coffee is very good and better than many other more commercial establishmentsNegatives - we waited 45 mins for a breakfast panini despite there being only one other table dining. Hardly a peak time to struggle with service. The food was very average and service non existent. Appreciate its bar service but everything seems to take an age and almost felt like no one was interested in serving us. No greetings or pleasantries on arrival or departure. 2 coffees, 2 breakfast paninis a very overpriced £15. Not worth the price they ask taking the above into consideration

Matthews Yard is quirky, but with a good atmosphere, you can see that a lot of change is going on, that hopefully will be good.Burger & Beer is one of the concessions there and serves only Burgers and Beers! We were a very large group (about 25) so it would have been impossible for us all to have been served at once. However we had to stagger our orders over 20 minutes, because the kitchen is tiny. Like minute! If there are more than 4 or 5 of you, it's highly unlikely you will get your food at the same time. Two people in our party didn't get their orders at all.The menu is basic, but they always have a special, which is nice. I chose the "Frenchie", which was good, but I'm not sure I'd go for Brie, cranberry and mustard again! The fries were ok, but not the best I've ever had. There is a very large selection of beers, but you can only choose when you go to order your food. The service was good, considering, the 3 staff take your order, cook your food and serve it. They were friendly guys and couldn't apologise enough for the missing food.If I was in Croydon, looking for a burger, I'd definitely go there, not any of the chains, but I'm not sure I would go there specially otherwise.

I have been there several times, and I always enjoyed my afternoon drinking coffee and studying. I appreciate they are trying to improve service and provide a wider variety of food but.... a proper ventilation system is absolutely required!!!The place results quite foggy during lunch time and definitely smelly after it!

Visited matthews yard to try the brgr and beer. Was a pretty good experience overall but by no means amazing. Firstly there didnt really seem to be an organised line to order. It was pretty random but this is due to the kitchen being right by the entrance so people wander into the queue. The burger was tasty as were the chips but the portions were pretty small in light of the price. However, we ordered both our burgers medium (i think this is how they come anyway) but one was a little on the pink side for a medium. The seating plan is a little unorganised but does the job if you are just popping in. Oh yeah and the beers...great selection but will probably just go back for a drink than food next time

I came here because it was advertised as a new place to eat. Service was friendly and quick and menu short but simple. I ordered the cheese burger and fries with a side of onion rings. My brother ordered the buttermilk fried chicken burger, fries and fried pickles. The onion rings were amazing - beer battered I believe. The burger was moist and nice - not seasoned really but still good. Fries had skin on them and were also nice. I don't like fried pickles really but my bro said that they were average. I probably wouldn't come back unless I was craving this food because the menu isn't extensive but it's a good place to eat.

I went on a 'cafe crawl' with a friend and this was the second place we visited.I have heard many comments about Matthews Yard. Some complimentary. Others less so.Anyway...I enjoyed my large cup of hot chocolate and the Rocky Road made with Aero! This was yummy! The building had a warehouse-feel and was a bit dark inside for my liking. The seating was functional, so I didn't feel I could spend an hour or so relaxing. Not impressed that there were no soft drinks available. It was only late afternoon! My friend had to have an 'Americano' coffee instead. The area surrounding Matthews Yard is in need of some serious regeneration - independent shops etc. There is so much potential...

I have been to Matthew's yard a number of times and at the beginning, I had great hope that it would be a great alternative coffee place for Croydon.I have been to some musical events and though the musicians and the food vendors outside were great, the service was chaotic. One evening they were receiving deliveries at peak time, during the event and the bar was overcrowded with staff not knowing what to do. Another evening, there were 3 members of staff on their laptops while the bar was again overcrowded and the rubbish accumulating on the tables. Needless to say that there were paying customers trying to find a place to seat and the staff taking up seats. If you need to do any adm, isn't there another place or time to do it?I have been there a couple of times for coffee and it always took forever though the cafe was nearly empty. Anyway, I kept some faith as there are not some many Independence cafes in Croydon, however the last straw was due to an experience similar to Sheila 203. We were in a group and we ordered some coffees. To my surprise, the first 2 orders were served in a horrible, disposable cup. I did say that it was not take away and we would prefer to have our drinks in a proper cup. The reply was " we ran out". Run out?? The cafe was not even busy. If they cannot provide a normal cup of coffee, then is there any hope? I know that the establishment is not in good shape financially and it is sad. However I don't think that they have the structure to continue. Sad but true. I can hope that other independent cafes can fill the void.

We have been going to Matt's Yard regularly for over a year. First time back after New Year and find that instead of proper plates and cups they have gone over to using paper/plastic cups, plates and cutlery (was given something resembling a wooden paddle to eat soup with). Sorry but this just reminds me of a cheap takeaway like KFC just not something we feel our beloved Mattthew's Yard should be doing We have enjoyed our weekly visits for lunch but are now seriously considering going elsewhere.

Heard of this place through work and decided to check it out today. Got to be noted that the staff are really friendly and polite. It's also a very chilled out quiet place which makes a great contrast to the hustle and bustle of Surrey street market close by! This isn't your usual 'chain' coffee shop and very unique . I love visiting quirky places and this is definitely one of them! Would be sure to visit again :)

I had to attend a meeting of Croydon Arts Network (CAN) on the evening of 14 July. Although my wife and eldest son had been favourably impressed with Matthews Yard, this was my first visit and whilst the décor is a little quirky and may not be to everyone's taste, I appreciated the comfortable armchairs and laid-back atmosphere. After chatting to a couple there for the regular meeting of Poets Anonymous, I realised that my meeting was being held in a separate room with a stage down a short corridor from the main bar. I hope that future meetings of CAN are held at this restaurant and intend to arrive early next time so I can try the food!

In the centre of Croydon Old Town, this is a friendly and relaxed place, where you are never rushed or hurried to finish up. Community space is available for meetings - in my case Poets Anonymous - and the refreshments are pleasant, especially the home made cakes. Yesterday I ordered hot food unusually, but after a delicious mushroom and cheese melt I may come early again for hot food. We meet here once a month and are happy to be part of the community by doing so.

Matthew's Yard ranks as one of my favourite ever cafes/ coffee shops/ meeting spaces/ work spaces/ event spaces/ galleries... the fact that it has so many uses is one of the main things in its favour. My partner and I often compare other places to it and find them wanting - either in terms of the coffee (which in Matthews Yard is INSANELY good), the ambiance or the brilliant, welcoming staff. It's a great relaxing, creative space that we've seen really develop and come into it's own over the past couple of years. The team really seem to take on board feedback and are always responsive, making changes regularly and trying new things out. I love it and hope it always remains as unique and special as it is.

Matthews Yard is by far the best cafe in south London. The atmosphere is great, the decoration nicely done and their coffee and food are consistently good. It's located right in the city centre, next to the Surrey street market. Very convenient if coming by bus or driving, with at least 3 large car parks within walking distance. Their wifi is very good and their sofas and tables are comfortable enough, in case you feel like working there for a few hours.Matthews Yard is the kind of place you go to when you're not in a hurry and want to relax, have a conversation with friends over brunch or drinks. Matthews Yard also hosts many cultural events with music acts, films, comedy shows and exhibitions, something that Croydon really didn't have until now.

Stepping in from the humble exterior is like stepping into Narnia. Spacious, well lit, cosy, and welcoming: perfect for writing ,working, relaxing or meeting with friends. The staff are delightful, the service is exceptional and the cakes are off the chain (I personally would recommend the lemon drizzle cake). Matthew's Yard also serves as an artistic / community hub in Croydon. Whilst trawling through spreadsheets on my laptop, I've been serendipitously drawn into improv marathons, French classes, and a bongo ensemble. Music also deserves a mention. Playing unobtrusively in the background, the staff made Spotify playlists often have me throttling Shazam on my phone to find out what that track was. This place could have been my forwarding address for the first half of 2014. Probably (definitely) the nicest place in a 20km radius. Good luck tolerating Costa or Caffe Nero after visiting.

I love Matthew's Yard. I have spent many a long day here writing up my PhD thesis. The staff are friendly, the coffee is good and the flat breads are delicious. They also do an excellent selection of home made cakes and cookies as well as waffles, shakes and smoothies. They serve alcohol and often have music in the evenings. I always enjoy looking around the exhibitions of local artwork displayed at Matthew's Yard. The building is in an old warehouse and retains many of the original features. I don't mind the fact that the service is a little slow, I come for the laid back atmosphere and to chill on the comfy sofas. I would definitely recommend checking this place out if you fancy a change of scene from the usual chain coffee shops - it is a Croydon gem!

Ive liked going there for coffee and lunch in the nice non chain coffee atmosphere but last time I went there though, the service was so slow. The guy serving forgot to tell the kitchen about my food order so after waiting 40 minutes I left getting a refund but not much of an apology. All he did was complain to me about what he had to do, there was hardly anyone in there! It was a quiet Friday afternoon at 3pm.

I really wanted to like this cafe because I recently moved to Croydon and wish the place had more cafes of this type. But Matthews Yard lets itself down.A reviewer back in 2012 griped about how when you order a cup of tea you're simply given a cop of boiling water with a teabag floating in it. Yet this is still happening. Milk is not offered, nor are tea spoons. It is not cheap, and the staff struggle to as much as make eye contact with you half the time.Summary: nice idea, but its execution falls short, because it lacks warmth and soul. Being trendy and hipster-ish does not make for a nice experience, by itself. You need better staff and to consider more carefully the customer experience, not just your image.

just wanted to say thankyou for the lovely afternoon tea you did for us a few weeks back for our friends special birthday. Sorry its taken a while to send this. We had a lovely time, the drinks and food were great (I loved the potato salad and coleslaw as well as the cakes) and the service was spot on.... Much exceeded our other recent experience in a Croydon hotel where it was over priced and not half as nice. Would def recommend.

Bad food. Loooong wait both for drinks and food. Waiter (owner I was told) got 2 meals wrong. Brought calamari fritti for my husband and I which he never ordered in his life and I can't stand them as they are like rubber in the UK so would never have ordered that. Waiter insisted I did, not once but 3x! My husband actually asked for whitebait! My husband ordered calf's liver as a main which is soft and succulent in France, Germany and Greec etc. It was thin and like shoe leather. It is supposed to go into a hot pan, then turned over after a few seconds and taken out of pan - served. This is what it should be like "A classic of British cooking, Calf's Liver is succulently tender and fine-grained with a deliciously mild, sweet flavour. More and more people are discovering the delicious flavour of Calf's Liver due to its place on the menus.« I took it home to give to the dog and foxes!! My friend next to me (we were 13) ordered meatballs which were so salty she couldn't eat them. Another lady didn't like how the fish was done. It was mediocre. MY mussels had anorexia. I have photos. They were non existent or if there was one in the shell, it didn't measure more than 5mm. 20 were empty and the sauce was not nice. Obvs they were not fresh mussels, they were cooked already and just heated up. Lots and lots of small broken shells in the sauce. Must have been the last dregs. Just as well I didn't swallow one of the shards. Will I go back? No, I'll go to a real Italian restaurant next time. Bragging about an Italian chef! He needs to go on a cookery course IN ITALY! I lived, ate and cooked there. I know what Italian food is supposed to taste like!!!!! And sooo expensive.

They cook the best skinless cod, away from the seaside, that can be found locally but the CHIPs!!! By the time you sit down to eat them at home, they become dry and shrivelled and there are just so many of them, that we don't have plates big enough. I recommend asking for lots of salt and vinegar in the hope the moisture sweats some plumpness into them while they are wrapped up. The Fish still wins out over the local competition, where some places are still cash only, a disgrace in this day and age.

What a difference. Just had the most lovely evening with a group of 12 people. The service was fantastic, with all orders coming out quickly and separate payments for each person. Totally went above the redirected. The portion sizes were very generous. Great brass band playing Xmas songs for a short while.
