Quiet little pub near the st james centre, service was outstanding by Alex behind the bar. A little expensive but understandable for the location!

Used to be known as 'HQ' 30 years ago when I worked nearby. Attentive pleasant staff, good pint, nicely decorated compared to when I was a regular visitor years ago. Didn't have food!

Fab small bar. Great staff very friendly. Central with sport on three screens. Live music on several nights . Good atmosphere .

The barman with the bald head is a darling. He is such eye candy. 5pm onwards Saturday 27th April. He was definitely worth going back to see his bulge in his joggers

Expensive for what it is. Toilets are better than the sister pub at the west end of Princes Street.

Had a really good night in here, chose at random walking past, live singer and the atmosphere was really good, 23rd December everyone in the festive spirit! Thoroughly enjoyed our night!

This was an excellent bar for catching up on EPL and Champions League matches while I was in Scotland. If you’re interested live music and good drinks, this is a great place. Michelle was an awesome bartender as well, so shouting her out.

Cozy pub serving well kept beers including guest ales at reasonable prices. Pipes are regularly cleaned, so beers are delicious. Bar staff were efficient, cheery and friendly. I miss the old wood decor from years past and was a little surprised to find the bar on the opposite side from where I had remembered it but it's still a great spot for a great beer.

A traditional pub with friendly service and great beer. When I visited there was an entertaining band playing folk music. Highly recommended.

Popped in for a couple of drinks after the theater! Immediately felt at home - what a find. Friendly staff (who even chased after us when we left an umbrella behind), good vibe and live music....what's not to like! Highly recommend.

I went there on a Tuesday evening. I was told they didn't serve food, and that the barmaid didn't know how to make a cocktail...

Just great, tidy and atmospheric

Staff was incredibly friendly and informational. They gave recommendations about the area and answered every questions we asked. Missed the live music unfortunately but I've only heard great things about it! Other visitors were lively and friendly as well. Will definitely visit again when we return to Edinburgh!

It's still a classic old style pub. Service was friendly. Very nice loca IPA. Live music, too. Varied clientele as you would expect. All in all, good.

Great atmosphere, live music, good beer.

I really like this bar, my only complaint is that they tend to close quite early. On my last visit they were serving, for cask ale, a Bellfield slate. This was to celebrate the Six Nations rugby. The Bellfield 80/- is a great beer, especially if you are getting bored of the ubiquitous pale ales which seem to be de rigour in Edinburgh. Bellfield brewery is only about a mile away.

They messed up our booking for a table during the six nations, when mentioned, manager was rude, sarcastic and defensive- telling us the table we were originally told was ours had been pre booked for months, as if we would have known that! He was the one who gave us that table when booking. He even sarcastically sat down in our seat we had explaining we could easily see the TV as if demanding to know our problem, well we booked a table for 3 at 2:30pm you made it for 2 at 2:00pm in different seat which wouldn’t have sat 3. Then to add to that some random joined in with him who we later saw laughing and joking with him about our predicament. We just wanted a seat we were promised to drink beer and watch rugby. In fairness he found us another and did go out of his way eventually to make this work have 2 stars not 1. Sad this is no longer my favourite haunt had been coming here a lot. Messing up a booking is forgivable, being defensive and rude about it as if it’s our fault not so much (and don’t add your pals into the mix to gang up on punters - sure you will be pleased to hear we won’t be back)

Great pub with reasonable prices. Have been a few times now and always get well looked after by the staff. Great variety of live music too.

Going to Mathers is a friendly, welcoming and very enjoyable experience. Great beer and fine wines at a reasonable price in a warm ambience. Do yourself a favour and try it!

Old school, back to what it once was (almost). Loved by rugby fans and hipsters alike. Perfect after work pint. Book a seat if you don't like standing 😉 at the weekend.

In New Town very close to York Place this little gem made our day. The friendly owner and his scandic looking helper create a cosy feel we rarely see in a pub. Life music, first a duett, later a guitarist not too loud add to the atmosphere. Besides the usual 3 beers from a small Scotish brewery near town are on tap. No food. But always a good idea as the owner is open for a short chat anytime.

Byliśmy tam przed chwilą i nie barman (blond włosy, koło 30) poinformował, ze nie sprzeda mi alkoholu, bo mam rozszerzone źrenice. Do tej pory nie mogę uwierzyć w absurd tej sytuacji. Jakie człowiek ma mieć źrenice, kiedy na zewnątrz jest ciemno i leje deszcz? Nie polecam, szkoda sobie psuć wieczór

Wonderful little pub with great atmosphere and plenty of live music. I love that they don’t do a pub quiz but have a quiz onscreen that you can participate in all weekend with a chance of a prize.

Great beers and great service. The atmosphere was also very cozy. The owners were very friendly and gave us great advise on what to see and do in the city. Would highly recommend!

We had the most delicious beef bourguignon for lunch. It is a lovely, welcoming bar where the owner and staff make everyone welcome. It has a chilled atmosphere. We go most Sundays for the afternoon jazz session. You can really tell the owner enjoys hosting as it is evident in his friendliness whether it’s your first visit or a regular customer. Having recently moved back to the city we are so glad we get to call it our local.

Amazing pub. Fantastic service. Landlord Robert has great memory for customers, order for detail. Live music is great and it’s a lovely atmosphere & decor too. A proper pub bar, but a class above the usual standard.

Quite quiet when we arrived but the Fringe and the Festival have now finished so there is a bit of a lull in Edinburgh. Staff are friendly and I'm sure things will pick up in this lovely pub.

Mather’s is a great spot. FANTASTIC hospitality! The bartenders helped us choose the right beers and offered up a lot of honest local suggestions.

Nice friendly pub offering a variety of beers. The bartender can make your favorite cocktail upon request if not on the menu. Good place to watch live sports. Watched the Liverpool Vs. Real Madrid 2022 championship final here.

Had a few pints here and met the owner and his wife. Traveling from Orlando Fl, was very nice, felt right at home. Gave good advice where to see and do while in Edinburgh. Will definitely come again.

We visited Mathers everyday we were in Edinburgh. Robert and Dorothy our hosts, as well as other employees are very welcoming, the pub is spotless and every table cleaned after each use.

Well worth a visit good choice of beer and real Ales. Modern look and TV screens for sporting events.

Revisit after umpteen years..still excellent..🍻

We visited this pub twice within a couple of hours,so handy for our hotel. Friendly young staff quiet, on first visit early afternoon but busier 5pmish seems to be a mixture of locals and visitors. Great traditional wee pub away from busy touristy thoroughfare with tourist prices. Good to see old adverts for Edinburgh breweries and photos of what this pub looked like when it was a wine merchants although think that was a while ago. Good selection of beers on tap and whiskies. When we stay in this area again will definitely be popping in for a wee dram.

Has been renovated and looks amazing, lots of seating, great beers on tap and a good selection of Whiskies. Great staff too!
