Popped in for a pint en route to the Taylor Swift gig at Murrayfield. It can be found at the west end of Princes Street, just as you start walking down Queensferry Road. To be honest, our pints weren’t amazing. Two of us opted for the Pravha and found them a bit flat and sickly. A real shame, because the selection of draughts on offer was great and the pub itself had a nice traditional feel to it. Cost wise, by far the cheapest round of the day but for quality, one of the weakest.

Ive been going to Mathers for 40 odd years , I went in last night for a couple of beers on my way home as I do every Saturday! They only had one beer available , Deuchers , which I personally dislike , so they can't describe themselves as a real ale bar !!

Horrible customer service. I went in the other night, ordered a first drink of the evening, was a little tired but not drunk or anything like that, got refused service for no explainable or apparent reason, I clearly wasn’t in any way drunk. Came back in to just talk to my friends, wasn’t intending on trying to order any more drinks. Was rudely told I needed to leave immediately, I wasn’t drunk, I didn’t do anything wrong, I wasn’t bothering anyone. The staff just wanted to have a go at me. Wont be coming back, very poor show.

I drink cider, but most bars only sell Strongbow, and I don't like it. In fact, I'd go as far as to say I hate it. My local has been shut for months, so I've had to hunt around for a decent pint of cider. A friend of mine was in here and spotted the Magners tap, so I've been coming in whenever I'm passing by on the way home. A great pint, and very competitive prices considering the locality. Just £3.90 a pint. Brilliant.

I last left a review of Mathers in 2017 when it was badly in need of some TLC. I am happy to report things have improved! Banquette seating has been sympathetically recovered and the ceiling lights are now much more in keeping with the place. All good improvements. Mathers is often, disingenuously in my opinion, referred to as an 'old man's pub' but it's so much more than that if given a chance. Sure there are a lot of older clientele during the day but they come here because they are treated with respect and kindness by the staff. Mathers is all about conversation. I spent a lovely afternoon chatting to a guy the same age as me who I'd never met. We were clearly from very different backgrounds but that didn't matter and that's the thing about Mathers- it's a pub for all except pissed idiots which you won't find here. Sadly they have added a music system which, to me, adds nothing to the atmosphere and just gets in the way of conversation. It could also do with a good dust in places. Beer selection was good I especially liked their house pale ale. Spirits selection excellent. Sadly the return fonts have gone replaced by characterless hand pulls but this has happened in many Edinburgh pubs, a pity. The staff were great and the kindness on display to their older regulars was heart warming. Mathers may have seen its heyday many moons ago but it is still a bustling, lively pub to have a few pints. It remains the finest example of a one room public bar in Edinburgh perhaps the whole of Scotland.

We found Mathers bar last year during a trip to Edinburgh and enjoyed it so much, that we visited again this year. We had Deuchars Indian Pale Ale, which was served by a pleasant, efficient Barman. The bar is clearly popular with locals, as there have been a few large tables of them enjoying their drinks on both visits. The bar definitely serves pies, as they are kept warm in a hot cabinet, but I'm not sure if they provide any other food products. Drinks are very reasonably priced and we will definitely return in 2021.

We visited for a Deuchars and a Hot Whiskey on a cold January afternoon. The Lady behind the Bar didn't know what a hot whiskey was, but made it when we explained. The Deuchars and Hot Whiskey were so good that we decided to stay for another 2 each. There are a small number of tables and we ended up sharing with some locals, who obviously visit the Pub on a regular basis to catch up and drink some local Beers/Ales. I try to grab a pint at Mathers each time I am back in Edinburgh - don't always succeed but managed it this time.Mathers used to be one of my regulars when I was a student and in my early working years, 25 years ago. It hasn't changed at all - ok, some of the beers have changed but that's all. (I would swear that some of the same blokes are still there with their half pint and chaser). Was never in fashion and will never be out of fashion, Mathers is a typical Scottish pub comfortable with its identity. God be praised! It was lovely to walk in last week, order a pint and a packet of crisps and stand there as if no time had passed at all. Wonderful. There was a mixture of locals and tourists happily sharing company, beer and the odd whisky. I may even have spotted a glass of wine or two - perhaps times have changed a wee bit!If you're visiting Edinburgh and wanted to sample a real local pub - not some tourist trap on the Royal Mile - then you could do much worse than dropping in here. Ask for a pint of 70 shillings (80 shillings if they've got it) and a packet of salt 'n' vinegar crisps. Tear open the packet of crisps to share and soak up the atmosphere.

I went with some Welsh friends to this bar which I chose because of its traditional style and previously friendly atmosphere. It was the evening before the Scotland/Wales Rugby match. My friends are in a choir and are good singers. There was only around 6 of them and someone asked if they would sing. The singing was not drunken but of a very high standard. Suddenly the young barmaid appeared angrily and interrupted them and told them to be quiet; singing was not allowed. This was before 11pm. I thought Edinburgh welcomed the Welsh. Certainly Mathers does not.

There seem to be two Mathers bars, we went into the one in the west end on a weekday around 5:30pm. The impressive mahogany mirror set-up behind the bar is quite impressive, and overlooks an average selection of Scottish beers. The room is large and high-ceilinged with minimal disruption from any niceties such as elaborate furniture, which is not a bad thing. There are 4 tv's around this one room, showing different channels of sport, which is perhaps the giveaway. This is a bloke's pub; a drunk bloke's pub.... perhaps even a "loudly vocal with a propensity to talk to strangers" drunk bloke's pub......If you are a woman, then the chances are you will feel out of place, and have comments made about your chest.... all very colourful of course, and it may be that things get more civilised at other times of day. But we felt the place was stuck in a rather grubby corner of the past, and would happily not return.

Was recommended here as I am celiac and they have a gf menu. As we were unsure what time we would be going (prior commitment before hand) I did not book. We arrived at 2.45pm and there was a sign outside saying 'bookings only, no walk ins' This was NOT on their website. We went in and spoke to a female member of staff who advised exactly what the sign had said. I then spoke to a male member of staff and asked where on their website it stated what the sign said, he said it didn't. Advised that due to rugby being on, they were unusually busy. The restaurant is large and they were not full to capacity. Asked if there was anyway we could have a table for 2 for an hour, point blank told no. We won't be returning.

Booked in the restaurant for our 20th Wedding Anniversary. We weren’t staying at the hotel but did add that we were celebrating upon booking. We arrived early expecting to have a drink at the bar but the table was ready for us. We received a complimentary glass of champagne each on arrival. The staff were fantastic and couldn’t have done more. They even sorted us out with a special dessert to help celebrate the occasion. The food was to a high standard and the portion size was perfect. Altogether a fantastic meal and exemplary service.

I've read some of the reviews, and if you don't understand Graham in the first 5 seconds of him opening his mouth, you don't deserve to be there...and I am pretty sure Graham will know/sense it himself. I think he relishes poor reviews. But we felt immediately at home, and once we passed the "test", Graham was the perfect host. I had to put up with insults on my lack of fashion sense and some uncomfortable history lessons regarding the villainy of George Washington, but my wife and I would not trade our experience for anything! Graham practically did our laundry for us, made us coffee, and even gave me a lovely (empty) can of haggis. Thank you for the experience Graham! I hope you enjoy the US Dollar Bill (with Washington on it)...and I won't forget that American history is really Scottish history!
