We were very happy that we had selected The Mason's Arms for our three night stay. The staff were very accommodating and provided great service whether it was at the bar, in the restaurant or for breakfast. It was a great location for our visit to the Lake District and we would recommend it without reservation.

Drove here especially on the back of a recommendation but they wouldn’t take our food order at 2.25pm as they stopped serving at 2.30pm. We were the only ones sat not ordered yet, there was hardly a queue. Thought it was unreasonable and they should state that they stop serving at 2.25 on their website if that’s the case.

We decided to eat here on a Thursday night based on other reviews even though it is a bit out of the way up some narrow roads. Outside there is an extensive area with comfortable tables & chairs and a great view but it was starting to rain so we opted to eat indoors in the bar area. It was lucky we decided to arrive early (18:00) because it quickly filled up and people were finding it hard to find an empty table - obviously a popular place with locals. The pub is very old with twisted beams and a lovely range fire which was lit when we were there giving it a cosy feel, a very pleasant place to enjoy a pint and something to eat. There was a choice of 3 cask ales and we opted for Hawkshead bitter plus a bottle of NZ sauvignon for the ladies (£25). To start we had black pudding & poached egg and mackerel pate - all good. For mains we had should of lamb (lovely), burger (big & juicy) and two of us opted for the whole dover sole from the specials board. Sadly the dover sole (at £21 each) was extremely disappointing - they were small fish and were overcooked to the point where the flesh was just falling apart - at this price you expect much better. It was also accompanied by potatoes and salad, the latter just didn't go with the rest of the dish. I'd go again because it had a nice ambience but I would definitely order meat rather than fish.

Once you finally arrive and manage to get parked (not an easy task when it's busy) you find yourself in a fabulous old pub. Ate there twice during my weekend stay in the area and on both occasions the place was packed. The pub was very nice inside, however we had to sit outside in the rain because dog's weren't welcome. We've eaten here before (previously reviewed for lunches), and always intended to return for an overnight visit.....which we've now done for a two-night stopover. Room was perfect (Strawberry Bank Suite), and so was the service from staff. No residents' lounge, but we didn't need one.....the small bars with open fires have great atmosphere even if not "comfy" (and a great stock of cask ales and local gins), and the bedroom was good for sitting too. Dinners and breakfasts are good with lots of local produce and friendly service (menus are on-line), but the portions for all meals are massive, so beware......we shared some of our plates, which worked out fine. Location not ideal for exploring the northern Lakes, but a good base for the southern walks.

We had lunch in Mason Arms on the first day of our 4-day stay in Kendal. It was very busy, as it was the Easter long weekend, and at lunchtime they unfortunately don't do reservations; however, this is understandable as it is a pub-style place, and both the food and the atmosphere are so good that you shouldn't let that put you off. We were only two so managed to get a table outside, which had a great view of the fells. For starters, we shared a paprika hummus with pita breads, which was tasty but not unforgettable. The main courses were the real deal though; my partner had the daily stew pot, which was beef with vegetables and an extremely delicious gravy, while I had the Lamb Cartmel - lamb cooked on the bone with rosemary sauce, served with potatoes, beetroot and red cabbage. Both of them were delicious and heartwarming, and it is a great choice after a length hike in the area.We later moved inside and had coffee and tea by the window, which only added to our experience. The inside of the pub is as impressive as the view from the outside tables, although in a different manner; it is cosy and welcoming. Can't recommend enough.

As always our adult meals were excellent but I was most impressed with the quality of the food for the children. Not only was it beautifully cooked and presented but it was also very substantial and proof of the pudding was in the fact we had two completely clean plates and not a complaint in sight! As we had a day out in the lakes, and this is one of our favourite little pubs on the way home. We usually pop in, and we did today. We have never eaten here, just had drinks. We love the atmosphere of the place, with the oldly worldie low ceilings, unlevel flooring. Sat by the fire is lovely on a cold wet English day. We were gutted to find the locals & customers are campaigning to have the gazebo removed. Why?!!!!!! The gazebo isn't an eyesore, it's totally fitting with the type of pub, it gives extra seating as inside the pub is small, and it's always busy. It gives shelter from the sunshine ( when we have it) and the rain. It looks so much better than the old jumbo umbrellas the masons arms used to have. KEEP THE GAZEBO! If we could have found the postcards to state this I would have filled one in. I hope this will suffice joining the campaign to keep the gazebo going.

We had it recommended for the food, the atmosphere and the views and it scored high on every one! Very cosy and olde worlde. The staff were very helpful, welcoming and friendly. We were told two large parties had arrived together and that there could be a wait for food for up to 45 minutes. We weren't in a hurry so we ordered and sat back to enjoy our wine. The meal arrived in less than 20 minutes so we were delighted but it had been nice to have the warning before placing our order. As we arrived in the dark we missed the view but this gave us an excuse to call back on the Sunday lunchtime for a quick drink before moving on. The views are exceptional - definitely worth the trip back. The pub was busy on both occasions but we found seats after a short wait. The outside area is provided with comfortable seating and patio heaters. We were told even blankets are provided for those chillier days!! A big roaring fire inside even though the day was quite warm but I'm sure it made it doubly cosy for those eating indoors. If you are in the area you must try to visit. It's certainly worth it!!

Having spent the last 4 hours scrambling on the Angle Tarn we were heading back to the lodge and decided on a late lunch (about 4pm). Started to rain as we got here but sat outside under the covered heated patio (we have 3 dogs, and made very welcome). The view is excellent, worth it just for that. We came to the Masons Arms years ago when it was a real Mecca for Belgian beer and Weiss bier lovers but that seems to have changed a bit. Still have excellent beers (we had Thwaites Wainwright) and the food has certainly gone up a notch. The crispy squid was a hit with 3 of the group and the pulled pork 'handful' was certainly that! Excellent kitchen, and the views from our cottage of the valley was magnificent. The restaurant Food I'm afraid was a big let down, well specifically one dish. All 4 of us had the Steak Sandwich, and quite frankly was awful. The Bread to Meat ratio was heavily in favour of bread, in the end I left the roll and just ate the steak...And there wasn't a lot of it. Shredded Cabbage & Carrot is a very odd choice of filling as well, and certainly didn't work well. Overpriced as well, but that's probably the going rate in the Lakes. We didn't complain to the staff, in hindsight we probably should have but we didn't eat here again. Very helpful and friendly staff, no complaints on that front. All in all, 3 out of 5 for the whole experience.

The Mason's Arms have a good selection of food and local ales.Be warned at peak times you'll have to be patient for a table as they don't take reservations. Oh and you almost certainly have to drive

The problem with giving a favourable review is that it generates interest - reputations snowball and before you know it it gets busier and busier. Despite this anything less than an exceptional review would be unfair on this establishment. Views, menu, food, atmosphere all excellent - the only caveat being its location - take an updated sat-nav and be confident that what awaits is worth the effort.

After a wonderfull day walking in the beautiful Lake District we fired up the trusty tripadvisor to plan our evening meal the masons arms stood out from the rest so off we went. The drive alone from Windemere is an experience, twisty country lanes I would say beautiful scenery but it was pitch black and raining a real drivers driveWe arrived at around 2045 to find they stop serving food at 2100 but the staff were happy to take our order thank goodness! The food arrived promptly and was absolutely delicious the sweets are to die forA special mention for the staff who genuinely seemed to enjoy their work.If you like atmospheric pubs in beautiful settings look no further than the Masons ArmsWe will be back!

The Mason Arms is on the Gummers' How road between Fell Foot and Crosthwaite on a very sharp bend on Strawberry Bank which gives it a lovely view over Lyth valley. There is some parking behind the pub,but due to the numbers of customers a lot of people park on the side of the road some inconsiderately. Living in the Lakes you get used to inconsiderate parking but it can be dangerous. If you are over 6 feet tall you will have to look out for several low beams a not unusual feature in a building dating from the 1600s I believe. Also several little rooms on the ground floor so ensure you check them all and don't just assume the place is full when you look in the door.Toilets are unpleasantly cramped with a slate floor which can get slippy and the old style metal trough which you have to step up to again minding your head!Service is very efficient, helpful and very friendly which provides for a good atmosphere. Open fires so great for drying off after walking on the fells but too hot if trying to eat a meal next to one.Food is very good with lots of choice. There is a restaurant upstairs which you need to book a table for well in advance. The food area downstairs is first come first served and is served al day. There is also a covered seating area outside with electric heaters.

My wife and I along with two other couples enjoyed a pleasant evening meal here recently. We had booked a few days in advance. This is a very old building with lots of character. The menu was varied, reasonably priced and had something to suit everyone's taste. Staff were very friendly and obliging. Would call again if passing this way.

Sat outside here for Sunday lunch and really enjoyed it. Roast beef with all the trimmings 5*. So cosy inside, I loved the decor.Only negative was that it was expensive for three cokes that got poured out of a 2ltr bottle in front of us :-/ Also people who came in after us had finished their food by the time ours came. Will come back and enjoy a beer instead

Food again up to its excellent standard. Pub very cosy inside a little tight for yours knees under the tables but that's what makes it traditional.

The Masons Arms is a very popular venue and rightly so. The is a good choice on the menu and the food is very good. During the day you can't book so it is first come, first served. The possible wait is worth it. Try and enjoy.

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.

Well I won't be going back ,the food was awful ...the tomato ,basil and pesto soup had a horrible sharp but sugary sweet taste...the sandwich that came with it had the cheapest bright yellow " butter "on. ,a maximum of one slice of ham and the cheapest mustard . My 4 year old grandson could have made a better sandwich ! My husband had pie which had hardly any meat in it and the gravy was unusual tasting ( to say the least ) and sweet . I've had far superior microwave meals ! The toilets which were always an asset to the pub had gone downhill too.

My husband and I were staying at the nearby county hotel and decided to call in for a coffee on the way into the shopping area. The coffee was great and the millionaires slice was lovely. Service was very good.
