What a change! Unfortunately there is a change off management called LYDIA. Very unprofessional can’t even open a bottle of wine! Unapproachable and extremely unfriendly, that’s the is a personality that can’t be changed. I am just lost for words how 1 person is able to destroy the whole atmosphere. Time to find new local!!

We visited the pub after having been told that a full refurbishment had taken place- the whole experience was a disaster from start to finish this Sunday- firstly we were brought an open bottle of wine to our table without the waiter knowing this had been opened, we then proceeded to find a member of the team to order food, after an hours delay one main course arrived and sat at our table before our starters, we questioned this with the bar staff who told us to forget our sides for the mains and hopefully the starters would arrive shortly, they did however the mains were no where to be seen half an hour went by and still no sign, my partners main was now cold and we had lost patients so went to the bar to say we were leaving, our order had been lost from the till systems which meant we had to quote what we had actually had, we paid for the wine and left. This is such as shame as we live around the corner, we were excited for the Tavern to be as it used to be a vibrant place with great food.

I love this pub, it’s one of my favourite pubs. Some of the worst food I’ve ever had. Honestly, come here for drinks it’s one of the nicest pubs in the area but really never order food here, it’s awful lol. Like rly rly rly bad. I paid £31 for a dryyyyyy asss steak with a claggy sauce and some cold chips. Person I was with got a Schnitzel that he said tasted like school dinner chicken, not necessarily terrible but not great… but honestly I really love this pub and I’m rly sad the food was this bad

What a shame, came by here last week and thought I’d stop off for a lunchtime pint, as said in a previous review the lights where on but nobody was home, the doors where locked and this was at 1:30pm This obviously isn’t a pub on a busy high street so people come to this pub to specifically try the marquess tavern. If it’s not open when people like myself come here specifically this is obviously not good. There wasn’t anything on the pubs instagram or Google page to suggest it wouldn’t be open. Not even a note in the door to say anything. So annoying!

Update August 2024 Literally the best Sunday roast in the area with superb sides and trimmings. Excellent friendly staff and beautiful traditional interiors. Huge portions with delicious roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips, leeks in cheese, Yorkshire pudding, bread sauce too! The cauliflower cheese side was crispy and had a delicious bite to it. The Chicken schnitzel was crispy and light and not oily or deep fried as is often the case! Great desserts, spoilt for choice. Highly recommend. Pleasant gastropub in the heart of Canonbury. The Marquess tavern is an old established pub with two beer gardens, front and rear, a dining area to the rear and casual tables dotted around the pub. Reservations are accepted here, advisable on Sundays and weekend evenings. Food is good but above average pricing for the quality and area.

I attended The Marquess Tavern for their food tasting event. We were greeted by Spencer who showed us to our table. I ordered a few drinks (JD and coke) which were made exactly how I like it to be honest. Charlie explained how the evening would be and it didn't disappoint. There was an array of food which for me personally, I enjoyed it all. As Charlie brought the food out he explained what each dish was. Starters Soup with sour dough bread Jam on bread Sliced meat, olives, cheese, houmous Mains Chicken pasta Lamb and potatoes Vegetarian rice Dessert Apple strudel and custard Apple and rhubarb crumble with ice cream As I .eentiined I and my family enjoyed everything we ate. My daughter doesn't eat custard, Charlie generously gave her two bowls of crumble and ice cream to make up for it. The Marquess is a lovely place, good space clean toilets and brilliant staff, didn't get the names of the young man and woman behind the bar but, both were friendly and polite. I will definitely be going back, wish I'd been there sooner. Fabulous evening Be proud of yourselves to everybody who made the evening what it was.

This was a nice little, accidental find. Kind of tucked away among the leafiness of Islington, it was bigger and brighter than expected. Popped in for a pint when I wasn't ready to go home, but my friends, with a young child, were. The place has a snug hideaway, which you can hire for secret parties; a pretty good menu; and an alright choice of beers, although the hunt for a pub that does a range of good ciders, not high sugar, fruity nonsense, continues. Staff were friendly, even during a mini card machine failure crisis. Its got 'nice place to spend a Sunday afternoon' vibes. I reckon you could take a board game there, and fit right in. They might have their own.

Living locally, i'd always rated this pub as a good off radar local for a quiet mid-week pint. Unfortunately our experience today was terrible, and we wont be back anytime soon. Whilst the main crowd was the usual mix of sunday families out seeking a roast in a quaint pub setting, the atmosphere was instead totally dominated by the pub owner/manager (the guy with glasses, who I see other reviews have mentioned) and 5 or so of his loud and obnoxious friends, all grossly intoxicated and yelling/singing loudly and inappropriately while huddled around the bar. Not to mention continually venturing behind the bar to endlessly skip tracks and force play their (frankly horrendous) music choices at increasingly deafening volume, to the point that we struggled to hear each other speaking at our table. It felt like, instead of a pub, we had unwittingly ended up in the garden room of someones wierd 16yo cousin, who had invited his school mates over drink beers and take pills for the first time while his parents were away for the weekend. The staff working seemed to fall in to 2 camps. Either they were completely disintersted in serving and more keen just to hang out chatting/drinking with the owners mates. Otherwise, those that were actually doing anything, seemed downtrodden with a mix of glib defeatism and embarrasement - the kind of sad expression you see on a 13yo kid who's parents have drunk way too much and become a complete embarrassment at a family wedding. It is sad to see a local pub with such great potential being continually squandered. Please do better Marquess.

I had the roast squash and when I was eating it I thought it seemed a bit bare, just squash, spinach, red onion and pomegranate. I looked at the menu again and I saw it was supposed to come with butter bean purée and almonds that was missing. £14 for the main and £4 for a very small bowl of chips. Overall the portions were quite small, my friend went to get chicken wings after since he was still hungry...

This pub is always reinventing itself: in the time we've lived in the area, it's been a pub for locals, a gastro pub with very expensive expensive prices and not great food, and more recently a decent friendly local with reasonable prices and good footfall. However, on our last visit, it seemed to be being run by children. There weren't many customers in and the staff were so noisy that my partner couldn't hear what I was saying, despite me repeating myself many times. She suggested saying something to the four staff (two of whom were coming off their shift) behind the bar, who were shrieking about something on one of their phones and completely oblivious to the fact that they were in charge of a pub. I said that we shouldn't say anything, as then we wouldn't ever be able to come back (we only live down the road), but we did give them a very disapproving look. This prompted an extremely rude response from three of the four staff. They clearly didn't care if we were paying customers or not. The more senior person suggested that we move to a quieter part of the pub if the staff were disturbing us but she stood by her staff rather than offering an apology for their playground 'what you looking at?' type rudeness. If the owners continue to employ such inexperienced and immature staff, customers will vote with their feet. The staff just didn't seem to compute that the customers that they were so rude to pay their wages and pay the pub's rent. We wouldn't dream of going back there, sadly, until there's a change of management. We wouldn't expect to be spoken to like that in any context, let alone when we're paying customers.

Staff were attentive, friendly and charming, and served us a drink as we took our seats. Unfortunately the food simply wasn’t up to standard. We both ordered a roast; the meat was dry and inexpertly cut. The vegetables were damp and flaccid, and the gravy was essentially just brown, meat-scented water. It’s a terrible shame that such a nice place was let down so badly. I wish I could be kinder to the Marquess, it’s a lovely pub and the people were charming. Stick to drinks if you come here.

This was the most awful customer service I have ever experienced. The manager/owner accused me of lying about confirming my table with a member of staff, went on a long rant about how we have been uncontactable (I have the record of the call on my phone) and that they would never serve a group larger than 8 and if anyone else turned up they would be refused. The pub was empty apart from 2 other tables. Her tone was rude, patronising and I honestly cannot understand why anyone who works with the public would behave in this manner. This was a birthday booking (which she was aware of as she mentioned it in her rant) and she ruined a perfectly nice family lunch. We left and did not eat. Truly bizarre behaviour from someone who runs a pub, I can see from other reviews she has been this rude to other customers. The other waitresses we spoke to were lovely but I would not recommend giving this woman your money.

Reasons NOT to go to this pub for a meal 1. The only time anyone came to our table was to take an order for the main and desert - not once were we asked how the food was or if we needed any extra water, drinks or accompaniment 2. When we wanted extra drinks or accompaniments one of us had to ask at bar3. Arrived at 130 and at 3.10 asked for two double expressos and told we could not order them as the table had a two hour time limit. We still had 20 mins. 4. Went to the bar and mentioned this and told they need 20 mins to turnaround the table. It’s a bare wooden table with a paper napkin and cutlery. 5. The Sunday roast was tasteless thin pieces of beef6. The Sunday roast lacked gravy 7. The Yorkshire pudding and potatoes were dry and cold 8. Asked for mustard and given English (no other choice) and it was congealed and only one teaspoon left in the dirty jar. After waiting 15 mins for someone to walk past that worked there had to ask at the bar for a clean and new jar. 9. Every time we wanted anything had to ask at bar due to lack of service10. Ordered the desert and the Elton Mess was dry and the meringue was so hard it was inedible 11. The cheapest glass of large wine is £8 and not great 12. Bill arrived and given the wrong one so had to be given two and pay twice. They ha be us a bill from another table. 13. £33.40 per person and refused a coffee with 20 minutes to go.What a terrible experience.

We were on a city tour of London and we were dropped across the street for an hour to shop and eat. It took about an hour, so no shopping. We had fish and chips that were wonderful. It was great to be in London Pub and we will always remember the good time and food we had there. Meal and drinks for two was approx $55 USD.

Linguini promedio. Personal muy agradable

I recently visited with my very fussy family and was chuffed that the menu catered for both me as a vegan, my daughter as a veggie and my 2 other carnivores. Veggie and vegan dishes were to die for and my meaty 2 say after that they are reaffirmed carnivores. The food was plentiful and piping hot - though not the salad thankfully. I shall return - regularly I reckon.

It’s not simple finding somewhere where my whole family wants to eat but the Marquess delivered where so many others have failed. They provided excellent food, a lively atmosphere and a waitress who tolerated the food foibles of our family of five with good humour. We will be back!

We were visiting friends in the area and had been recommended to give Marquess Tavern a visit. As I suffer with various dietary intolerances I called ahead to ask about the menu and the possible options available for me, the member of staff on the phone was very understanding and offered several options so we booked a table.

I felt that I had to drop you a line after the lovely Sunday we spent at your pub. I was hosting a family birthday and decided to let you take the strain. I just wanted to say that we really enjoyed our day, the food was great and the staff really friendly, so thank you and we hope to be dropping in again soon.

Food ok, but not at the price. You don't have to go far to find better value for your money. That said, it's a comfortable boozer.

Mensaje recibido alto y claro, no volveremos.

The location is sweet and the pub has a fair deal of charm. My friend got the larger roast combo and enjoyed it although I think it would be impossible for anyone to finish the whole thing. I had the vegetarian roast and it was fairly mediocre - particularly the "vegan gravy" which was tasted nothing more than water. I don't understand why this would be served, plenty of other pubs serve decent tasting vegetarian gravy, or do something else to sauce up the meal. Was also a bit offputting that we were constantly asked if we wanted more food or drinks - felt a bit pushy - given the pub was more than half empty the whole time we were there.

I'm not local to this lovely area but have eaten here a few times - with the friendly staff and attractive decor it's a good place to meet a friend (not noisy). However, this time the food wasn't up to my previous visits - an insipid swordfish nicoise was more of a collection of ingredients than a dish. Lacked seasoning but there were fragments of shell on the egg! The prices especially for drinks seem to have crept up too. Overall it was still a nice evening but I won't be in any rush to return.

Good food, disrespectful service. We asked for a G&T and it was served without ice. When I asked the waitress for some ice, the person in charge of the pub yelled at me from behind the bar saying that we were informed when we arrived that the ice machine was not working, which was true. Nevertheless, I found that reaction quite out of tone. First, it could have been said in a more friendly way. Two, it's not my job to remember that they run out of ice. Three, they could have fixed the ice machine or could have gone to a store and buy some ice - knowing that it was a Saturday night in the month of July, as a consumer you expect a bar to have ice and if not to solve the problem quickly. I went through some other reviews and it seems that it's not the first time this kind of mistreatment happens in this place.
