Been meaning to try this place as it has been mentioned a few times in various London "Best Sunday Roast" lists. The roast was quite nice, but nothing special. For the price, we were expecting vegetables to be included, but they had to be ordered separately. I asked the server whether the roast came with 'all the trimmings' and they said yes, so to find out otherwise was a bit annoying. The food was also under seasoned. Overall it was worth trying once, but the value for money wasn't great. Service was pretty good though, thanks for that.

It is a perfect spot for Sunday Roast. You can walk here in about 20 mins thru Spitafields market, Brick lane and the flower market and get your wonderful meal here. We chose a 2 course menu: appetizer and main for £38. Appetizers are unique propositions and then you can pick roasts (or something else) that come with potatoes. I would recommend also a side of greens that were a great complement to the meal. I hear deserts are great but the meal was perfect like this. Roasted chicken was extremely juicy and flavorful, the Ramp had great texture and came with gravy and horseradish cream (lightly spicy), potatoes are extra crunchy outside and soft inside. I would recommend also the atmosphere that were vibrant. Just be prepared to a decent wait to get your roast but it is worth. They also have a good wine/cocktail selection. A 12.5% service fee is applied.

What a lovely meal. The atmosphere is eclectic, the service is brilliant, the menu is creative and caters to all. From the nocellara olives to the pie, it was all heavenly. Some suggestions which were a novelty for me were the caraway and black treacle sourdough, the Dorset crab kedgeree and the chicken and preserved cep pie. Go!

The food here is incredible. Everything we ordered was delicious and would highly recommend the pie. I had the oysters and then shared the chicken and mushroom pie & chips with my fiancé. The only regret was that I had no room for pudding because there was no way I was leaving any of that pie! Have already booked to come back to celebrate a family birthday. We visited the Marksman for a Sunday evening roast and, while we enjoyed the experience overall, it wasn't particularly memorable. The staff were very friendly, though there seemed to be some confusion with the tables that night. We chose the two-course option for £38 and requested the bread and butter as a starter (this was extra), but it was served alongside our mains. The bread was served cold, and we both agreed it would have been much better if warmed. The chicken main was excellent and offered a more generous portion compared to the rump, which was disappointingly small. We also ordered a side of potatoes, but they lacked flavor and weren't salted to our taste. On a positive note, the desserts were delicious. Although the Marksman wasn’t our favorite spot for a roast, we still had an enjoyable evening overall.

When you enter the gastropub, the first impression is that of an atmosphere which is unassuming of an old pub. The service was quite slow when we arrived (we probably waited 30/45 mins) before we could order our food and drinks BUT … things quickly changed as soon as we got our food. The food was excellent. We had soused mackerel as a starter, wing rib (for 2 has main course), perfectly cooked, a selection of 3 cheeses. The star of the show were the apricot sorbet and the chocolate mousse. Overall, we spent an unexpected, excellent evening. Despite a very slow start, the service was friendly and efficient. The cost of our excellent meal was fair. Overall, I can only recommend this friendly, local pub which offers some excellent food in a cosy atmosphere. We have forgiven the lack of maintenance and the shaky start. However, please be aware that this may not be a right choice if you want to spend an evening in a very stylish environment. Again, we loved it, I would be very pleased to come back again.

We had good service unlike some of the reviews below however there is no value for money here. A dinner for two was £120 with no alcohol. We had bread, a tomato starter and two slices of vegetarian pie. The pie was £22 each and was a tiny slice which would have suited a starter not a main. It was just really really bad value for money. Disappointing and not sure why they are pricing their menu so highly. I wouldn’t go again, either.

We visited for Sunday Lunch with the family during a trip to London. Roast beef - perfectly pink. This again is very unusual & difficult to pull off in such a busy kitchen. Amazingly crisp roast potatoes. The best I have had as part of a pub roast. These had a deep crust that had been beautifully roasted & not deep fried as is usually served. All washed down with a good selection of cask ales. This is definitely worth booking in advance.

I’d seen the photos on Instagram so had to try out this pub. Unfortunately, the pub itself isn’t very appealing, felt very lifeless and the decor a bit drab for a traditional London pub. The local surrounding area is also not very nice, a few nice coffee shops. The service and food however were incredible. It’s probably some of the best food I’ve had in a long time. The cocktails were amazing too. I enjoyed our lunch but I wouldn’t hurry back.

Disappointed We went for the second time for a Sunday roast and we felt a bit disappointed. The beginning was good. We had couple of drinks and we asked for some olives with our aperitif but then we decided to order a starter as the main was going to take some time to be cooked which is completely understandable. The starter was delicious but the olives came once we nearly finished with the dish, not a big issue but they should arrive with the drinks at the beginning. The wing rib came sooner than we thought and we were a bit disappointed for the size of it, considering that it says for 2 people and it is an extra £25. It’s not about the money, it’s about the value. Meat was okay, nothing special, few roasties, some delicious carrots and cauliflower purée. It was good but again, I think that a place like Marksman can do much better than that. After we finished, we waited quite a while for the table to be clear up and been offered dessert. We order a dessert and that was the cheery of the top of the cake. We waited a good 20 minutes for the dessert to arrive. Apparently, it was their signature pudding and again, nothing special at all. Service was good apart from the fact that it dropped down towards the end, drinks were good and the starter was delicious but we felt disappointed with the overall experience. It just an honest feedback after visiting for the second time a place that we thought it was better than that.

Fantastic experience here! We had a reservation for 3 on Sunday and was able to add an extra person at the last minute without any issue, very thankful for them accommodating the change. Atmosphere was very cute and cozy but not cramped. Table was plenty big for the food and drinks. We all got the set menu with different items and were very happy with our food. We are not locals so I can’t speak to the authenticity of the dishes, but the quality was fantastic. Very well done dishes. Timing of the courses was great and not too fast or slow. Staff was friendly and helped us pick a good “traditional” dish for the main as that what we were all looking for. I will note that I didn’t see many vegan or vegetarian options on the menu. There are some gluten free options but not explicitly marked as such. Wouldn’t recommend if you have someone in the group who has these dietary restrictions. There are options for alcohol free beers. I would absolutely go back here again to try other dishes. Lovely!

Conveniently located at the main road, this pub doesn't exactly stand out from the rest of similar places in the area. You'd easily go past it without a second glance, since it's typical 'pub-y' looks. But if you actually step inside to have a dinner, you'll be in for a nice surprise. There is a very spacy dining area upstairs with lovely dimmed lights. You can really stretch your legs there, which is a nice change from the usual squeeze. The wine selection is on a high level. Perfect for wine lovers! But here's where it gets properly brilliant: the food. I'm not exaggerating when I say I had the best steak of my life here... The thing must have been sous vide because it was perfect – temperature, texture, softness, the lot. Even the broccoli side dish great – packed with flavour and very, very garlicky. Compliments to the chef. If you're reading this (which I hope you do), you're a culinary genius. If I could, I would give this place 6 stars if I could, just for the food. It seems like a culinary hidden gem!

Always heard this is one of the best roasts in London but found it all very underwhelming, unfortunately. The food we had was nice enough but as London restaurant/pub standards go, and the standards of roasts, it was unmemorable. Firstly its very overpriced. £38 for 2 courses. £42 for 3 courses. And the portions are pretty small. All our meals were just warm enough and there were barely any vegetables. The chicken roast for example came with no Yorkshire pudding and no vegetables, and the only vegetable side that could be ordered on the menu was cabbage. A roast should be served with a variety of vegetables as standard. Especially at that price! I had the vegetable pie which was nice but so small and served with nothing on the side. Bizarre. The vibe is nice enough inside the pub... cosy and intimate. The service was hit and miss. Overall pretty disappointed. I would come back for a drink, but not for the food.

Had a meal last night. Service was really good with a sound knowledge of the menu. Starters were all enjoyed but a disappointing main course I had Hereford rump cooked superbly but a water gravy, cold Yorkshire pudding and hope cabbage, well, £6.00 for a spoonful. Lack of vegetables unless the baby food smeared on the plate counts. I felt really sorry for my son being a vegetarian his choice was the celeriac pie. Not sure about this. The size of a small takeaway coffee lid and served on a side plate with nothing really is a puss take. I assume the chef doesn’t like vegetable or vegetarians. We won’t be going back overpriced food. Do not go to this pub! The staff here are horrible. Two friends and I, we're all around 60 years of age, went to the Marksman last Friday for quite drinks. We bought our drinks and sat down but within a couple of minutes, a female member of staff asked us to leave. She said they had a zero-tolerance to drug use and we would have to leave immediately. She was both aggressive and rude. We tried to reason with her and explained none of us had ever taken drugs. I offered her our coats and bags to search, and we turned out our pockets. We offered her and her staff the opportunity to search us too. She said she wasn't going to do this and, again, insisted we leave. When we asked calmly for details of what we had supposedly done, she refused to tell us and became more forceful that we needed to leave immediately. She called over more of her bar staff who hovered around us in a threatening and intimidating manner. We remained clam, respectful and polite throughout but we were left with no option but to leave. As three 60+ year old life-long friends, who have never taken drugs, that were simply enjoying a quite night out together, we found the experience highly unpleasant and humiliating. The Marksman staff were rude, aggressive, threatening and not interested in clearing up what had clearly been a mistake. They treated us like criminals. We will never go back and I would encourage everyone to avoid this pub. There are many other much nicer pubs nearby.

Quality is good but just too expensive. The Sunday roast was fine, they have a set menu where you have to choose two plates, they did allow us to go for just one but were not very please with our request. The roast was good but on top of the extravagant price greens had to be purchased separately (I order a roast I expect a roast not half of one…). The gravy came 10 minutes after the food was served and was actually quite watered down unfortunately. The vibe is good but definitely would suggest trying to get a table downstairs in the pub rather than upstairs. Unfortunately I will not be coming back because the price was simply too much for what we got in food quality and the service at the end was nice but was not all through the service. This is a restaurant that had been chosen for a special occasion, my sons 40th and our family had made a point of meeting here having heard glowing reviews, we came from far afield….First impressions count…… And my first impression when I walked into the Marksman was… the decor hasn’t changed a great deal since I had came here 30 years ago when it was an old boys pub , but I understand the Hip vibe that many establishments in Hackney want to portray, so with that in mind we wanted to give this place a try…This is a Saturday lunchtime at 1pm and we are the first people apart from the staff in the restaurant. First in … served immediately at the bar and greeted by our waiter Upstairs to the first floor dining area, a tad bohemian, we had a long table for ten backed on onto the serving area and dumb waiter ( that’s not a dig at the staff… they have an old dumbwaiter serving hatch) and we sat directly adjacent to two open doors…. We had booked several weeks earlier and when making our reservation we had specifically made a point of explaining to the booking receptionist that in our party there would be 8 adults and two children.. We knew the house rules , we knew we would only be allowed two hours on the table ,before it would be required by other diners and we knew we need place our order within 15 minutes of being seated…all agreed and understood….. we arrived at 1pm and ordered our meals, asking about children’s menu we were told they had no such thing , which was our first disappointment and when asking for suggestions of what to feed our children , the waiter suggested maybe chips and corn on the cob… not really quite what we were expecting…BUT… What can you do when you need feed your young children…so with no other option we ordered the chips and sweetcorn alongside a portion of ham Our starters arrived reasonably promptly and I have nothing to complain about what was offered… it was ok, NICE. Nothing special just nice Plates removed, the restaurant was beginning to fill , a couple of tables of 2 a table of 4 alongside ourselves.. customers we’re ordering their food… total capacity when full upstairs in the restaurant area is probably no more than 25 or30……Enjoying our own company we were in no rush great rush, we were expecting our main courses to arrive shortly. During a lull in conversation we began to notice that customers that had arrived after us had been served with starters, main courses and were now devouring their deserts. Almost an hour after our starter, unbeknown to me my wife had asked the waiter what was happening with our order and had been gently fobbed off with the expectation that the meal would be with us shortly. At 2.55 (over an hour and a half after ordering) I asked our waiter if I could have a quiet word, and asked what was happening with our order and, if he felt it was acceptable that we should be kept waiting for this length of time …… He was diplomatic on behalf of the kitchen and gave me his excuses and went immediately to speak with the kitchen… needless to say our food was promptly dispatched to the table and our waiter apologised yet again and offered us deserts on the house.. The menu itself is nothing special… if not pricey..this is very much a criticism of what is on offer … I knew what I would be paying prior to going there, so it’s not about the bill …But the menu and food are NOTHING SPECIAL. .none of the main course are offered with sides and the selection of side dishes are limited.. The wine is nothing special if not expensive for an unknown vintner and you could easily compare with a Sainsbury’s taste the difference.. All in all, this establishment has left me with the feeling that they do not care.. Going out for a meal is not just about the food, it’s much more ……and I felt like their opinion is that you need not look after your customers, because there are enough Mugs out there prepared to give us a try, believing old reviews ..You shouldn’t be allowed to get away with a second rate service.. Won’t be returning. As a postscript… my wife emailed the restaurant outlining her opinion and they refunded our service charge …. Still won’t returning … there are better restaurants out there

Surprised by all the less than positive reviews. Food was somewhat overpriced but overall very tasty, waiting staff were helpful and attentive. I had the mackerel and the pie which were both good quality. The pie could have done with some veg (especially for the price!), and the roast potatoes between four of us were rather meanly portioned at 2 potatoes each(!!). However the pastry and pie portion was good. The fig set cream dessert was outstanding, such an intense flavour. It was a bit on the expensive side, but I’d personally recommend this place.

the potatoes and the pie were both quite underseasoned, for £50 (pie for 2) I would’ve expected it to be perfect. Definitely wouldn’t say it was worth the price. The staff were extremely attentive and the atmosphere was great however!

Fantastic Sunday lunch and very welcoming to our two dogs too. The whole chicken was huge and so there was a lot left for a doggie bag! Definitely will be back!

Came here for a Sunday roast with our dog recently. The roast chicken and the rump were amazing, although lacking in the accompanying sides that you would usually get with a roast… Service was a bit slow but it was a busy Sunday and the delicious food made up for it!

Went here for drinks- and staff were just so rude and condescending for no reason ??? Genuinely walked in with my family, and got met with hostility from bar staff and decided to leave before ordering anything as I felt so uncomfortable. Shame as I have been wanting to check out this spot for a while !

Very interesting food and very tasty. The staff was very nice, they helped us choose the food. The restaurant was very nice. The prices match the quality of the food.

Extremely disappointing for so many reasons. We had Sunday lunch. First is the service. We had to ask a few times for our drinks, and one of the servers was quite rude to us (a guy), essentially mocking us when asking if the roast potatoes were cooked in animal fat (as there were veggies interested in eating them). But what is most offensive is the cost versus quality. It’s £80-90 a head including 2-3 drinks, on average. And there’s no veggies included with the roast, the servings are small & the meat was tough. The gurnard was lacking in seasoning, and one fillet was £30+. Style over substance. Really, really disappointing.

Went for the Sunday roast. Staff were very accommodating of my dog and for people with disabilities. The rib roast was expensive but worth every penny and the level of cooking was truly exceptional. This was maybe the best roast dinner I've ever had.

Absolutely overrated. The amount and of food you get for what they called 'set menu' is simply not at the level for you to remember the place with the flavour of satisfaction. In other words, no worthy that lil extra cost sometimes you expect will save the Sunday lunch. Must say they tried to make up with some desserts on the house, but... after taking that long in between dishes, we couldn't accept it and was late already for everyone. Sorry, but better out than in.

Definitely agree that this place is not worth a visit. Staff weren't too bad but the food was mediocre to awful. Overpriced food, dirty cutlery and dirty glasses. Avoid and go to somewhere much better in the area!

The best lamb buns i have ever had in my entire life. Still think about them, and so lucky my friends lived down the street from this establishment.

Really disappointed with our visit to this cafe, we were late arriving and all hot lunch food was gone. There was some questionable soup and dry bacon rolls, but a skeleton staff and it took forever for the older man serving to get to us. The menu online had looked amazing and I thought we were in the wrong place to be honest. Haphazard table arrangements and I was asked to move as they were "closing this part of the restaurant". It looked a mess and there were no spoons. Seems very shabby and totally disappointing. I wouldn't recommend. No toilets on the site either which is rubbish. 👎

Visitar Brick Lane!

Very convenient location next door to Bethnal Green tube station, good selection of lager but as a real ale drinker somewhat disappointing as no ales on handpumps and ws limited to a small choice bottled ales. Good venue with very friendly staff but rather noisy music to talk over and later was showing a Spanish football game on Sky sports so got a bit busier and noiser.

Had high hopes for this place. Oddly they only sell their own fruit fizzy drinks so no Coca Cola, sprite, etc that was a huge put off not having your fav cold proper fizzy drink to wash it all down!! Reminds me of Five guys poor cousin. They say free topping but they are not passable. Could hardly identify the grilled mushroom, and fried onion it was a complete caramelised mush under the bun. Plus they are passing off fresh cucumber as advertised on their menu board as pickle when it hasn’t been pickled. When someone says pickle as a topping on a burger I will assume it’s a gherkin so seeing sliced fresh cucumber under my bun was poor effort and they have no jalapeños but advertised it as a free topping. Overall package is disappointing good effort with the beef patty and bun but for £8 for a single burger with poor offering of toppings and bland warm chips that are sat around to get cold while one person is serving and flipping burgers and a weird selection of non identifiable drinks £11 is not good value. Won’t be going back
