Marklews Fisheries in North East Lincolnshire

I’ve been coming to this chip shop for 30 years! Today I ordered a large fish and was disgusted at the size of the fish. I even asked for a different one as it looked like a fish finger. Will not be returning again it’s a rip off! It’s a one from me.

First and last time we use this takeaway. The server got my order wrong and I had to have 2 large fish as he forgot to order me a medium and I didn't want to wait even longer than I already had. The chip portions were ridiculously small compared to other local places. The fish batter was so dark and thick, clearly over fried. The fish was dry and tasteless . Its the moat expensive and yet the worst quality fish and chips we've had locally.

Very poor food this used to be a great chippy,the fish I had tonight tasted like it had been frozen absolutely tasteless n not a cheap meal here,last time I shall use this place

Rather disappointed with my visit to this chippy. If you order standard fish and chips you would expect a piece of standard fish ( even though it looks like a small portion!) Then when billed you find out you've been charged for a large! And if you wanted a standard fish and chips you have to specifically ask for the medium or you will be given a large even though you didn't ask for a large!! I think this is an elaborate scam which other reviews have picked up on. The chips were hot and ok but the small fish looked like it had been doubled battered to make it appear larger hence probably the reason it was very dry. I would not visit again and would disuwade anyone from wasting there hard earned money. Worst chip shop I've ever vacated.

Wasn't very impressed with here. Mainly the batter was inedible fish did smell a bit but had worse. Chips dry. Service was ok . Wouldn't return though

Called in for a quick meal for a Saturday afternoon. Shop immaculately clean. Food was excellent. Home-made fish cakes. Very good price. Excellent service, .will call again when I'm in the area.

Absolutely shocking just got home with my order and I'm a large fish n two tubs of gravy short. Never again

First time having fish and chips from here and very disappointed. Fish batter was undercooked inside and like cake sponge! Yet the fish itself was overcooked and chewy. Seemed to have been recooked/reheated. Chips not the best either. Very disappointing.

Thought we'd try it after a long time...only selling the £5.40 large one's ? ..medium ones to order ??..2 fish and large chips..£13.60 ..dark brown overcooked and dry..lots of batter not much fish..won't go back..will try another one next time..chips were ok.

I had a Chip Bun with Peas and Scraps. My Mother had Fish and Chips. The food was outstanding and the service was wonderful. The food was cooked to order and tasted amazing. Exceptional!

Ordered once to try, won't be returning. Ok if you have been without food all-day and about to pass out other than that it was terrible. Fish cakes are full of potato, chips and fish Okish.

I feel the review on Marklews Cleethorpes are unfair. I've also had good tasting fresh white haddock from Marklews and chips are always very good and fresh. You know their fresh because you're often waiting for fresh fish & chips to be cooked. Highly recommend.

Chips didn’t taste nice and where cold Sausage was cold batter tasted funny like the chips Peas where ok Couldn’t eat it and put them in the bin Never go there again

After a fishing trip one evening my partner suggested fish and chips, our usual chippy (Top Shop Fisheries on Sandringham Road) was closed so the other half called at Marklews, we haven't visited there for over a year as it was rubbish the last time we went, nothing has changed, the (very small) regular portion of chips were anaemic and scrappy, the tiny fish was completely overcooked (dark brown) and dried up to the point of being pretty much inedible, never again will we set foot in that place, waste of time and money. It's also a lot more expensive than the far better places we've been to.

We are not so snobby that we are upset by tattoos on staff by the way. Like a previous person reviewed. We love them. However £14 for 2 x fish chips n peas was very expensive. The fish was very dry and has been before. The chips very scrappy. Nice tiles in the shop though and staff ok. Nothing like THE marklews in humberston rd in 70's and 80's..they were 100%. Think these owners are avtually not marklews.

I have been a regular at marklews cleethorpes now for about the past 15 years. Always a reliable service and the food is usually pretty good, there is the odd occasion where it hasn’t quite been up to standard but to be fair I don’t know one single fish and chip shop that does not have a bad day every now and again.

Went to pick up some tea from here. Fish and chips twice and one large chips. Asked for fish wrapped separately to keep it better etc. Girl on till said " what do you want ", I told her and she slung it all together in one big mush, and it really was not very nice when I took it home. It was cold and had clearly been stood for 30 mins or so. Expensive and the staff always seem very rude in here. A very rough and ready place, the girls serving usually have loads of tattoos up there arms, it is quite a rough place that I will not be visiting again. The quality is poor and the price is high.

OK went into this chippy as came highly recommended, ordered 4 large cod chips peas, paid or them went to collect and was told it was haddock, i was sold haddock believing it was cod. 4 large haddock and chips came in two white paper wraps, full of grease as i asked for lightly battered, i have never seen such a mushed up smashed take a way in all my life this is one nasty grim greasy chippy plus to be told im give haddock when i asked for cod is not good. this is nothing but a cheap nasty £2 back street chippy. there was more grease and fat in the paper than in the fryer omg. plus more salt than the Irish sea on the mushy peas . i dont care. but id rather have the specialty cod from aldi than this effort of what they call fish and chips never again this is nasty BTW i am not from here im here on holiday thinking of moving here, hmmmmmmmm not so sure now .

Went here because my usual excellent chippy (Sandringham Rd) was closed. Normally get the fish special at £3 couldnt see a special here so ordered 3 fish and chips. Requested £20ish seemed expensive so quick mental calc came up with £16ish. "Oh their large ones he said." "Thats not what I oredered" But thats what I had ready he replied. Didnt argue and left shop. Fish cooked to order at Sandringham these had been lying around for hours, all dried up in a very heavy unpleasant batter. Portion size was large but inedible so irrelavent.

sadly,like many others this plaice is now doing the old large fish,regular fish scam,& overcharging,,having paid upfront there is not much you can do about it,,,go down dock buy your own & get them to fry it for you,,most will do that..contrast this to spain or portugal where they bring you a platter of fresh fish & you choose what you like & don,t pay until afterwards when your happy with your meal !

I asked for large haddock costing nearly £5 it was barely a medium size disgusting price although the fish was nice but very greasy

Called here about 8.15pm. Bought two fish and regular chips. The fish could have been fried hours previously as it was dry and leathery. The generous portion of chips were equally dry and lacked taste. This chippy used to be excellent but obviously not anymore-avoid. Poor quality and expensive compared to other chip shops.

Great salt and vinegar at this establishment, 10/10 for the vinegar. One thing that caught my eye was the girl serving me, blonde and beautiful. Although I’ll bet she stinks of fish after a shift. But yeah here’s to the actual review, on more than one occasion I’ve found pubic hairs in my fish batter. No joke, they tasted fine but just a bit off putting after it’s happened more than once. Great smell when you walk in but it just gets a bit too much after waiting 7 minutes for your food. Wouldn’t recommend to anybody with fish allergies.

Who puts 2 fish & large chips all wrapped together for to get a couple a mins down road to open upto soggy batter & chips swimming in grease. Took them back said look at state you can’t expect us to eat that he looked & said nothing wrong with it. Said look at batter it’s soggy as owt he said it’s just sweated up if you didn’t chuck them all together it probably won’t a done that. He said you want same again but it will be same again obviously not getting that if you wrap separate it probably won’t. Said I will have money back I forgot 2 peas as wanted to get back before it shut & wouldn’t refund for them. Got kids sausage & chips but said it’s ok about them don’t after refund they will probably eat them when get back. But still wouldn’t refund for peas. Look at state a partners shorts with all grease going back what’s come through wrapping. Not cheap shorts aswell & now ruined MARKLEWS CHIPPY CLEETHORPES

Called here for tea what a mistake fishand batter soggy not nice .It was like yhis last time as well but thought would try again every one has bad night but i will mot be going back quite expensive to £14.somthing for what seemed like very small fish chips peas and curry was so disappointing.

Needed food at a difficult time and this fish shop was open. Ordered fish chips twice meal cooked fresh and most enjoyable. Highly recommend.

The quality of the fish was fine but the size of the fillet was disgusting for the price we paid. Very very small compared to other fish shops.

I was asked to give it a second chance at putting this right after the last time i went it was beyond terrible.. There was a nice young lady serving & while the food seemed hot in the paper, by the time i got to the car to eat it it was barely warm & very greasy. not all of the chips were cooked as they were raw in the middle. so i will not be going back you've had your chance to make things right but failed!!!

A proper fish and chip shop. Freshly cooked haddock. Limited selection, no messing around with food that doesn't belong in a chippie. Really nice, big piece of fish, great chips, scraps, reasonable price; job done!

been for sausage, chips & only after a few mouth fulls i started to throw up!! i bit into the sausage and it was one of them very cheap 'plastic pink' sausages full of grease... GROSS!! the food (if u can call it that) went in the bin not long after being sick..£3.20 for that cr*p is a total joke! I WONT BE BACK!! AVOID PPL as u will only regret it!!

I used to like Marklews but unfortunately it has become really really bad, i ordered 2 fish cakes and chips and received the driest fish cake and chips in my life, literally tasted like they was off. The fish cake had the biggest piece of bone in it i have ever seen, the size of my thumb and i have never found a bone in any fish i've ever eaten so it came as a shock to me. Avoid which is a shame

My wife and I had beautiful fresh Haddock and Chips I had mushy peas and the better half had Curry Sauce. It was piping hot and dry no grease in sight.

Called in here as our usual chippy Hanley's was closed for holiday got my usual 2 burgers in batter and a large chips.what costs 5£ at all other chip shops cost over £7 here.a beefburger was £2.40 and that was just a burger no bread salad or anything

I go to Marilews every week for supper and usually it great, tonight however the chips were overlooked, soggy, full of bits and potato dark bits......I was being served when another lady bought a bag of chips back, now I know why. I threw the chips away and just ate the fish cake.

I used to frequent here when I worked in the area and always enjoyed they’re chunky flaky fish.

Only worth visiting if 'Sealane fisheries' down North sea lane and 'The fryer' down Grimsby road are shut. in an area that prides itself with the best fish n chips, Marklew,s is very very average......

Called mid evening so not nearing closing times. Chips where cold and chewy. Not many for £2.40. Service was poor. Asked for scraps to which literally 2 where scrapped off and put in rather than telling me there were none. Will not return to our local chippy!!

It had a great name in the town a few years ago but somethings just dont last i guess , had fish and chip late one evening after visting a friend in hospital, but sorry too say got them home and just about put the lot in the bin, not gunna bang on but sorry Marklews never again for us goodbye :-(

My family have used this chippy for years, we live near the Middlethorpe ship but they also have one in Grimsby. The fish is always fresh, and the portion size is great. Consistently tasty fish and the owners are lovely people. It’s a proper family business and you can tell they take pride in what they serve.

As always great fish & chips,I just wonder how much more expensive this place can get. Although you always get great fish & chips here, The price is making me try elsewhere.

The popularity of this chippy is obvious from the usual long queue. The fish is always fresh and well cooked.

Been around for years..a little pricey...very very stingy on chips size..regular chips are a joke..half of what other places give..a large bag from this shop is a regular...can’t believe it has survived...poor value for money

Lovely fish, thin batter...very tasty. The chips could have been cooked a little longer...to golden...this would give a much better flavour. A bit pricey

Llamada aquí cada vez que viene a visitar Londres de mi padre. Vive en medio Thorpe Road y la comida pescado aquí es sublime siempre frescas y patatas fritas sabrosas. Se viene aquí por unos 20 años y nunca me decepcionó y echo Glen el dueño que siempre fue un gran conversador y carácter. El equipo es muy atento y rápido servicio incluso cuando la tienda está ocupada. Simplemente la mejor en Cleethorpes y más allá, puede venir y abrir una sucursal en Londres. . . . . ! ! No saben cómo hacer buen pescado y patatas fritas como lo hacen hacia el norte.

Gran trabajo de nuevo desde el viejo fiel en Marklews. Los recuerdos de hoy, aún manteniendo un alto nivel como recordado como un niño.

These are the so good, the batter is golden and fried to perfection. The fish, wow, gorgeous. The chips are how chips should be....on the whole, it is perfection.

Crap never ever again to expensive chips are sharp on the ends & greasy in like oil left on the paper not always hot 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

Great service , gorgeous non greasy chips and scraps were huge and yummy, didn't sample anything else but would certainly go back to try a fish cake or battered sausage! Thank you x

Really good chip shop very clean food is great my family loves them even though I don't eat them much. More cost than a normal chip shop but the food is better.

I have to drive past another fish n chip shop to get to this one, means I have to re heat them when I get home but I think it's worth it.It's a busy establishment so it means the food is constantly being cooked & served freshly fried.

The haddock was cooked to perfection. The best fish and chip shop I've visited in a long time. Definitely a recommend.

Disappointing the quality of the fish is not as good as it used to be sorry there are better fish and chips so will not see you for a while until you reply and say the quality has improved

Possibly the best takeaway fish in chips in Grimsby, always nice and friendly and always great food. Sometimes a cue but who mods waiting when your getting freshly cooked food

It is very unusual not to get an excellent piece of fish here. I find fish is like steak very hit and miss but out of all the fish and chip shops I have visited In the local area I find Marklews the most consistent. The fish is always fresh and tasty, maybe if you want to be picky the chips could do with being a bit crispier and can be a little on the soggy side but overall I think it takes some beating.

Good portions of fish and chips freshly cooked. Will also cook your own fish if requested, subject to being very busy. Good value, really enjoyable cooked with care in fresh oil. Worth driving past other chip shops for...........

Excellent fish and chips demonstrated by queues on Fridays. Very popular with locals. Always good service. Take out only.

was told about this chippy after visiting a lot in the Cleethorpes area and reviewing a fair few of them ,can honestly say this one is the best i have tried so far,the fish is cooked to perfection,not like the 2nd rate fish served up to holiday makers on the sea front.!This place is defineatly worth looking for .Outstanding

Used to rely on this as a good chippie, but last two times it was aweful the fish wasn't fresh tasting and the chips very greasy and not at all nice. On complaining the manager was on the defensive and not at all apologetic or willing to improve his fish 7 chips for both reasons will not be re-visiting. Amazing supposed to be a town proud of it's fishing heritage and yet we struggle to get decent fish and chips in this town and have to rely on Whitby and other out of town places for decent fish & chips!!

We found this chip shop. Lovely crispy fish and chips. We shared a portion of chips. That was plenty. Slightly greasy but think this is because it's cooked to order.

gorgeous chippy one of the best had sausage and chips really tasty dont eat chips often place is very clean always is usually busy but worth the wait would recommend not the cheapest chippy but worth the money.

Been to this venue for several years staff and quality has always been good until this last few weeks, we visit at least once a week I have many years fish experience and management quality not good and management has bad attitude when discussing the quality sorry Marklew's for that reason we will purchase from you ever again, would have bee good for you to listen.

Went here, purely based on the name (same as mine).Had fish and chips, very greasy, fish not the best quality.Edible, but wouldn't go out of my way to go back.

How it has taken 30 years to find this establishment is beyond me.The fish is the best I have ever had in a chippie, anywhere, ever.The quality is consistently good and every time the meal is a treat.

We use this venue at least once a week quality has always been exceptional my fish wasn't great last week so I mentioned it in passing to the manager the reply was I should have come back to complain I was shocked as I wasn't asking for a refund just a sorry woukd have been ok instead of arguing with me a long term customer who spends 300 quid a year if I travelled bsck as he said late at night it would have taken me half hour plus fuel I purchased late and they would have been closed when I would have arrived sorry this was not good I will give you one more chance to be polite as there is plenty of competition out there I bet you don't reply to this shame as I have entered several excellent reviews in the past Eddie

Went to this takeaway (which used to have a good name) on the 10th March 2016. Ordered two take away meals and the food was simply dreadful. The chips were black and stone cold, the fish cake was all potato with black bits in it, and the chips were covered in black bits. I chucked the lot away and would never go to this place ever again. There are a few good chippies in Cleethorpes, this is not one of them and it is very expensive as well. Pure junk.

Marklews in my opinion which also has a shop in Grimsby always has been the best chippie around. Their fish has lovely light batter and portions are very generous.

even Whitby fish and chips don't compare to the quality of these. They have got to be the best in the country not just the area.

This fish and chip shop is one of the best locally - fresh fish and deliciously cooked chips good variety of fish available - I love skate and us almost always available here when in season

Marklews certainly used to be the first name to come to mind if you were a local and lived in Grimsby or Cleethorpes. Don't get me wrong its still reasonably good and much better than the "Chippies" on the front serving the trippers but its losing its edge on the competition and to be honest some of the competition has taken the pole.Come on Marklews check out the competition and go that extra mile

Visited again last night my Thursday night treat fish was fantastic and fried with loving tender care great food see you next week. Should try it best in town thank you again.

Probably one of the best fish & chip takeaways in the area. Decent fish quality and nicely done. Ample parking out front as it is located within the shopping area on Middlethorpe Road

Went last night 22nd May 2015 great fish and chips always been very fresh plenty to eat, premises are very clean and cook your food generally when ordering we go every week for a treat and travel several miles keep getting the good quality.Staff very helpful.

For me and my partner Marklews Fish and Chips are the best in Cleethorpes, having recently visited Steels Cornerhouse and being a tad disapointed. Unfortunately we do live about 40 mins away from Marklews so don't get there too often but when we do, we enjoy every bite !

Not a restaurant only a take away fish and chip shop unfortunately but brilliant every time, always one of my favourite takeaways!

On a visit to my dad's this weekend and a four hour drive from London got my tea from here. It was simply the nicest fish and chips around better than London chippys. As my parents live on Middlethorpe Rd I have been going here for years and they always deliver outstanding food and delicious fish and crunchy batter. Well worth a visit you will not be disappointed, the staff are always attentive and helpful .......... Try It !!!

visited recently as was with relatives nearby,haddock was gorgeous,lovely batter and excellent tasty well cooked chips.Would call again if in the area,large queue in my opinion is a sign of quality,if people are willing to queue then it has to be worth the wait

Go here regularly when visiting my dad as only down the road, and just love them here. Tasty batter on the fish and always fresh and lovely chips. I live in London so miss real good haddock so make a point of eating from here regularly.Miss the owner Glenn who I got to know well and all the team do a first class job and service.....check it out now comes highly recommended

Always good haddock and great portion of chips. I can't comment on any of the other products as the fish is so good I always go back for that.

Used to visit every Saturday and get our fish and chips then take them down to the prom to eat them. Went a few weeks ago and the chips were limp and tasteless. Plus the girl behind the counter couldn't add up because she got the price wrong. Thinking it may be an off day went the following Saturday but both fish and chips were not very good. Asked for chips with scraps but got a bag of scraps with a few chips. Fishshops are lucky because not many people go back to complain because they are normally too far away or at home before they open the package. We have now stopped using this fishshop.
