Market Tavern in Croydon

Wanted a true British Experience with bangers and mash. Burnt dry sausages and lumpy mashed potatoes. Couldn’t eat it as was disgusting

Excellent good and service, the GM and Team were fabulous and helpful throughout our visit from giving the kids something to do, to putting the snooker on for the adults!

Came in here tonight for dinner, my partner who is an amazing cook was out so I decided to eat out. Omg, the food I shared with my sister was incredible, so much so I had to ask who was in the kitchen, apparently Ben, thank you Ben, your a credit to the kitchen, I'll definitely be back.

We normally pop down the market tavern on a Saturday night but won’t be In the future. We had hell of a night with our food order the chef didn’t have any tomatoes for the dinners even though the pub is situated down a fruit & veg market, we was then told that the chef had burnt our garlic bread and do we want it crispy, I ordered white bread on an all day breakfast and had brown bread on my plate then the lights was turned right down so we was eating our food in the dark. Don’t recommend eating here on a Saturday night.

My son came in with his friend and had food and I joined him later for drinks and I wanted to say how lovely the staff were, Sarah the manager was helpful when we weren't sure what was in stock and Louise on the bar was so friendly! Staff always so helpful Manager Ben& Sarah helpful in placing orders and taking any items I didn’t want off the dish. Never an issue with the food and when there was the managers really helped making the situation better.

Came here for breakfast with friends; the staff were really friendly and welcoming, the breakfast was delicious and only £6! We will definitely be back soon

Great place! Moved to Croydon in February and was a potential local, flitted before but since Josh has come it feels like a proper local, welcoming, great customer service all around, clean and great variety of events and playlist weekdays or even more so on the weekend. Would reccomend for service, sports and a nice pint with just the right amount of atmosphere!

I came here with a work colleague as we were in Croydon for a couple of days for business. We decided to give this place a try and for cheap eats you cannot fault it. A man sized burger and a pint for £12. I wasn't expecting the best for this price but was pleasantly surprised, a large portion and a tasty burger along with a decent pint of ale, you can go wrong. Well... decided to visit here as we do whenever out in Croydon. Normally a decent place to have a beer, few games of pool etc. But theres obviously a cocaine problem, to which we suffered. So because I went to the toilet at same time as my friend... and after both urinating... my friend complains of a bad stomach so goes to the cubicle... I wait for him.Then staff come in, look in the toilet which i do concede, has remnants of (probably) cocaine on the toilet roll holder. We were abruptly asked to leave and our fresh drinks poured away. I offered the "manager" 1 minute of her time to explain it wasnt us to which she exclaimed she had us on CCTV. I look forward to that phantom footage that doesnt exist and will never frequent there again. Jokers.

We often come here in our lunch hour for very good pub food at very reasonable prices. Bar staff always friendly. Varied menu and extremely tasty. So good that we organised for our entire department of 23 to come here for out departmental Christmas lunch. Staff were great, food was great, we had the best Christmas lunch we've had in years and everyone had a lovely time. Considerably better than some of the more expensive places we've been to over the years, not pretentious, just a lovely pub with everything you'd expect. Thanks so much :)

Nothing wrong with the pub...been in many times over the years...Decent pint as well....what it is served by is laughable....Tubby foulmouthed Cockney sitting at corner of bar tucking into a bowl of chips( stick to a salad)....effing and blinding to everyone how bad her day was......Seriously never come to me for a job your a disgrace

Food and drink is cheap, atmosphere pleasant. Staff are very polite and make your feel welcomed. Food is very good pub food. Would recommend it.

Saying in Croydon we came in for tea. Basic, easy to cook food put me in mind of a Wetherspoons. 2 for one cocktail offer was good & the food was average but OK for the price. The bar staff were taking food offers, bringing it to tables and clearing up. The lady who looked after us was lovely. Everything is cheap so you get what you pay for quality wise. Good location in the centre of town.

This pub is perfect for all occasions with numerous televisions showing all your sport, a good selection of craft beers, wines and spirits. The food is also superb and very good value. Also there's a nice seperate pool table area which is perfect for a catch up with friends. Make sure you visit this place to see how good it really is. I'm sure you'll love it!

They did this place up recently as it had a bad reputation. It’s still terrible. StillRough clientele. Still bad staff. StillLies about their promotions. Absolutely dire. It could be a real gold mine where it is and achieve decent ratings and clientelle but they’ rather cream the profits off people with no money and theirMates. Absolutel dire.They lie and lie and lie. It really is the worst pub in Croydon and I’ve been to them all over 5 years or more. Believe men when I say - don’t go here.

We came here for lunch and I ordered macaroni cheese with garlic bread and when in arrived there was no garlic bread as waitress said the barman never ordered it. After a few arguments we we brought the garlic bread. Your staff really needs to place the correct orders as very frustrating when they forget to order the side that was originally requested

I wouldn’t usually leave a terrible review, but I was so disappointed and shocked by the new version of the Goose that I have to.We are visiting as we now do not live local, so hungry & with two children in tow we decided on a familiar location.No kids menus out, 1 girl trying to serve on the bar and do everything else, seemingly.Ordered a cheese and ham sub & chips for the kids which was a fair size but the ham was rubbery.My husband got the mixed grill. The steak was so bad you couldn’t cut it with a steak knife. The sausage was rock hard and inedible. The chicken was dry. The egg was over cooked. The chips weren’t cooked properly. And the gammon was rubber too.I ordered the southern chicken burger. Over toasted bun, undercooked chips. Weird watery sauce on the side, a wafer thin bit of chicken in a burnt coating. We took a couple of bites, returned to the bar to say we wouldn’t be eating the meals and asked for a refund for them (not the sandwich as the children did eat).No questions asked they refunded the two meals (which we later realised wasn’t even the correct amount). They didn’t check the plates, nor take them away, nor ask what was wrong with our meals!! This made us think this is normal for this pub, and they already knew the food was substandard! Definitely won’t be returning and would not recommend to anyone.(Around 12pm lunch, was really quiet aside from drinkers)

My wife and I went in for lunch and had their two lunches for £8.49 offering. She had chicken and I had fish and chips. The food was fine for the price. Not many people there at lunchtime though.

We went here as we've thought the menu looked good on a few occasions. Finally decided to go out and try it as a treat. Checked online and saw the same menu.Went in and saw the same menu.Went to order and suddenly what we wanted to order was "permanently off the menu" and they were "sorry we haven't got updated menus yet"I could forgive not having the latest menus in your locals, due to logistics; but the fact you couldnt even be bothered to change your website means I really can't be bothered to give you any of my business. Thanks for wasting my time.

Food and drinks are reasonably priced. Staff are helpful in general however some of them are not too enthusiastic. For example, if you ask for mustard, you will be most likely told they haven't got mustard so you need to make your way to the bar and pick it up yourself as they do have it. Staff are also a bit slow when it comes to clearing tables.

Visited for my friends birthday as a party of 7 adults and 2 children. Ordered children's meals which took near 45 mins to arrive and then both came without jacket potato which was ordered, but replaced with rice. Apparently they'd run out of potatoes but the children weren't given an option just given rice. We sat and had drinks before ordering adult meals as the pub has a nice laud back atmosphere, spacious and sport on tv. Later we ordered the adult meals, it was a long wait for them to be served. The wait for cutlery was a while adter that. So not great sErvice however the food overall was good. There was 2 members of our party that weren't impressed as the beef in Yorkshire pudding role was very dry and the plank platter was lukewarm.The bbq chicken melt and hunters pie was amazing though, really lovely and tasty and fresh. 3 hours later we had to remind the staff about the kids desserts. They got them shortly after. The adults desserts came out pretty quickly and were tasty. Good location for shoppers and have good facilities pool table, big screens for sports etc. Ladies have to go upstairs to the loo though.

Only stopped in here as the weather was so inclement on a South Croydon pub crawl. Probably not an establishment I would tend to usually frequent but there was a lively atmosphere inside and a decent array of ales on hand-pump. Unfortunately, what was originally served was definitely bottom of the barrel. However, the bar-staff were apologetic and agreed to offer us something similar. The whole experience was average and I really have nothing further to add.

It’s the Friday before Xmas, football on the tv, lots of people and.....2 bar staff! Glasses mounting up and 3 deep at the bar. And lots of real ale off. Rubbish!

I quite like this pub. Me and my wife often go in there for a bottle of wine and something to eat. Its great for sport although does get a bit crowded when you have a big premiership clash game.The wine is not badly priced nor some of the draught ales which are quite palatable (not the case when it was the Goose in the Market).Only thing is sometimes it does take a bit of time to get served (maybe thats slight lack of staff or maybe it just gets busy sometimes).Even so when you do get served, I always find the staff very pleasant and friendly and they will do anything to help.Yesterday we came in and I had the Christmas turkey dinner and a pint, it was really good and better than the average Christmas dinner that other chain pubs are knocking out and all for the princely sum of £7.I certainly hope to be going back there over the Christmas period for another one of these dinners.So all in all well done Market Tavern I really think you are getting it right.

We'd eaten elsewhere but called in for a drink. Decor very smart and atmosphere lovely. A lot of big after work groups but it is close to Christmas, not sure if it is always like that? We didn't have any issues with the bar staff as in recent reviews and were served quickly. We wouldn't normally be in this end of Croydon but after this experience we may well visit again.

We started visiting this pub after the refurbishment, on 25th October 2017 at around 7PM. Although the decor is nice and it seems cleaner, some of the staff leave much to be desired. I have been served before by a good and friendly barmaid, my husband has remarked that one of the bar staff is not very nice and quite grumpy. When we visited, I was served by the rudest, laziest barmaid ever. When I got the bar, the girl was waiting for a customer to come back, as he had short paid and she could not serve anyone else in the mean time. Myself and another lady were kept waiting for some time, until the other lady asked for if someone else could serve us, only then did the girl shout for someone to come help. A man came to the bar and asked if he could have a pint, I pointed out that its not his turn, The girl pulled it anyway, setting aside the pint she was watching. The previous transaction was now complete, and so she served the man next instead of myself or the other lady. She still just stood there, avoiding eye contact. I gave her my order, which was met with a filthy stare. She had a face on her that regrettably I can only describe as a slapped bum. She eventually got moving, as slow as she possibly could, she had forgotten the second drink by now, which I had to repeat, to which she barked - single / double ? She also forgot which flavor crisps i ordered. It was only three items, not a massive order at all. I could only sigh to keep calm. She demanded to know what was with with me, to which I replied that I'm not very happy with the service. She told me 'Well if you don't like it i'll get my manager to have a word with you' . I hardly think its me that needs 'a word' .I'm very cross about the service I received and that the staff have been so rude. Its all good and well to give the place a lick of paint, but nothing makes up for rude service. A drink after work should be a relaxing and pleasant experience. My experience was nothing like that . I contacted the establishment regarding the experience,and although Luigi , the manager replied that he was investigating , he didn't follow this up at all! I would find it hard to return to such a place. With so many bars in the area, and the Green Dragon has just been refurbished, where I have always had really good service, I would find it hard to find a reason to return to this establishment. There is the Spread Eagle, the Ship and Matthews yard to choose form after all.

Thought nice place then ordered food. Took ages then mains arrived with starter. When we queried we were told that despite menu being split starter and main, you have to be very specific that you'd like your food to arrive that way. Apparently people in Croydon ask for food to arrive en masse. Took this up with waiting staff and manager but you have to be clear! Food arrived cold and nobody was interested. Really a shame as the place was quite promising.

My partner and I enjoyed a first class, 2 course meal at the Market Tavern. We ordered Vegetable Penang and Cheese & Leak Open Pie followed by Black Forest Brownie Cheesecake. The total bill was just 13.98! The meals were beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. The staff were friendly, attentive and professional. The pub has recently been refurbished. It was light, airy and comfortable. We will return!

Staying in Croydon overnight. Walked into the high street and looked at a few places to eat and chose the Market Tavern as it looked like it had a nice atmosphere. Glad we did as we had a lovely meal. Staff were friendly and the food was excellent and it was a good price too. I would definitely cone here again next time I am in the area. What a big difference from previous goose on the market. Very bright and clean. Good seating area outdoors. Friendly staff and good prices. Although a pet hate if staff clean tables and remove empty glasses will you please dry them and remove all wet menus that have been used as beer mats. But a vast improvement from previous days. Best meal we had on our trip, and so reasonably priced. Three of us ate the special (fish, chips and peas) which also included a drink of choice which was beer, wine or soda, a two for one dessert special, all for $25 US. Food was great, atmosphere was fun. Bartenders friendly.
