Market Place Fish & Chip in North Lincolnshire

This is a great chippie, I first met Bill many, many years ago when he had just bought the shop, I was a taxi driver and often popped in for some fish and chips for a quick lunch. His fish and chips were excellent then, and still are now. I don't know where some people are getting treated disrespectfully by the staff, or getting bad food, I never had a problem with them. Also, despite a few more chippies in town, this is the only one I use. 100% recommended!

worst experience of my life - will NEVER go back. the menu isnt as it appears - you have to read the mind of whoever wrote it because your food will be served how they ASSUME you want it. ordered spam & chips and gravy for my autistic son - first time we have ever had everything coated in gravy . did not travel well. we asked for our food to be wrapped to take away but it did not deter the elderly woman serving. apparently we should not have expected the gravy in a separate pot ( there were plenty on the side) as the assumption is you asked for gravy so obviously want everything coated. please do some basic research on autism , needing foods to be separate etc ... he threw his food in the bin because it was inedible. please also look up autistic meltdown. the fish and chips is on a separate secret menu - if you want it skinless. why is this option not on the menu ?. we got a dried up piece of fish that almost a quarter of which was hard, fishless and dried out. sorry but the price of food nowadays and takeaways being a treat , i expected to be able to eat what i bought - not impressed with the nasty layer of skin. threw away more than was eaten. awful greasy after taste lingered in the mouth for hours later. if you're looking for a takeaway , you'd be better satisfied finding one with a straightforward menu , and servers who speak to you and dont use a crystal ball to try to guess what you want . very poor customer service.

Normally the fish and chips are ok from here, but tonight they were very disappointing. It was all cold as if it had been cooked for quite some time. The chips were dry and hard.

Fantastic Fish and Chips but Lord help you if you ask any of the staff for condiments. Honestly some of the worst customer service I've ever had, it's become local legend how miserable and foul the ladies in here are.

Top price, bottom quality Got 2 fish and chips for tea, very poor fish, all batter no fish. What a complete waste of money.

Great place to have a Friday takeaway for some fish and chips. The fish is alright, the chips are a bit bland for me but others like it more that way so it doesn’t really count. Really friendly staff. Tasty.

Barton is blessed with a great choice of clean fish and chip shops and it is difficult to choose. We don't as we tend to use them all at least once a month. Carry on the good work it is appreciated.

Grudging service, a long wait and unpleasant fish & chips. Regular clients must get good service, but obviously not extended to visitors.

We had business in Barton upon Humber last night the 24th May 2019 , as we were short for time we came across this fish and chip shop , I ordered haddock and chips twice at a cost of £11.40 , we sat across the road were there’s a bench , we didn’t eat a quarter of it , it was disgusting , wether they new we were strangers and gave us lunchtime leftovers I don’t know , if they would like to look in the bin opposite the toilets their fish and chip are in there , thank god I was sick when I got home and. Not whilst driving the car , a total waste of £11.40 .

I feel we are spoilt locally as I'm always disappointed when I pay for top rated or award winning fish and chips, market place is always better.Been my chippy of choice for many years and I travel from my village.Perfectly fresh fish in light crispy batter. Just right chips. Nothing overdone never greasy. Recommended

Great food and was really fresh and tasty the chicken nuggets were perfect and my mum said that the fish was amazing this is one of the best chip shops out there. But it smells of fish.

This fish and chip shop never varies. Always excellent. Staff and owner are great too. If you’re in Barton and want fish and chips, this is theplace to get them.

I can be a bit faddy with fish 'n'chips, I had heard good reports and tried it, what a gem, beautiful white fish cooked perfectly, I had a 10minute walk home with my tea and when I got in and served it up was still lovely and crisp and fresh.

Always call here for Fish and Chips when visiting Barton. Lovely food served by efficient and friendly staff.

I walked past feeling ravenous so what better to get some good british food? After paying an above average price, i was further let down by the soggy chips, which had a strange tang to them. The fish wasnt much better though the batter was decent. Moreover, the staff were a little miserable and unhelpful. Very mediocre.

The fish and chips here are delicious and definitely worth a visit. Have tried both the fish cake and steak pie and these are also lovely The staff are miserable unless they seem to know you, then they become chatty and friendly! Odd that new customers are treated with such distaste, it’s a definite discouragement to return. Owner please take note

We have discovered this gem of a fish and chip shop and drive all the way from the midlands to enjoy them.

I am a regular and travel around 12 miles round trip to pick up from here because the fish and chips are far superior to those served in either of my local chippies.

So the first time the lady behind the counter was pure evil to me I put it down to her having a bad day. I didn’t go back for a few months to let her calm down I genuinely think this lady has some kind of ‘beef’ with the fact she has to be nice to customers. I won’t go into the details of my first visit but let me share with you my most recent encounter; i asked for a ‘bag of chips wrapped’ which she got ready after looking at me like I’d asked her to dance naked on the table top. I put salt and vinegar on , then all of a sudden she dumps a massive pile of scraps on top. Now I’m not a fussy person but these were for my partner who hates scraps. I said to her ‘ I’m sorry I didnt want scraps’ to which she replied ‘well you’ve put salt on them now so what am I supposed to do with these?’ After saying I wasn’t too sure what she should do with them but I would need a fresh batch without scraps, she picked up the packet and slung it full pelt at the fryer and stomped around making me a new portion. In shock, I paid politely and left . What I should have done was told her to choke on them. Avoid this place at all costs . I would also practice your exit strategy in case she divides to start throwing random battered delights at you.

Visited here with my friend and we both had fish and chips, the service was good and the counter lady was really friendly, service was quick and the fish size was really big

Great chippy never been disappointed. The only down side is that most other chip shops I go to I often feel disappointed because there never as good as this my local chippy. 👍

This was an emergency meal, after a day of fasting for a hospital procedure. I'd tried other fish and chip shops in the area, not that impressed but this one is a very high standard and our cod was 'cooked to order'. It was a very generous portion of fish and we only needed one portion of chips to accompany the 2 fish ordered. Very clean premises, pleasant staff and a very good menu too, at excellent prices. We will be using this place again.

I have to start by saying that I like the fish and chips from here, they really are very good, I don't even mind having to wait for chips, I know what you're thinking, but the fryer goes at his own pace. The thing I really mind is the attitude of the two ladies serving, everything that you ask for is greeted by a roll of the eyes and them slating you because you have dared to ask for them in a box instead of paper, these two ladies need to look long and hard at other places in Barton where you get good friendly service. Food good, service is worst I've come across.

Travel from out of town to get our fish and chips here when we need a treat. Always very pleased with the standard of the food usually very busy but certainly worth the wait for freshly cooked fish.

Have visited here on a few occasions, it is a little pricy but I've not been disappointed with the food or service. The fish was lovely and fresh and the chips very nice. The homemade steak pies looked very tasty so will be trying one of these next time we pop in. Really friendly staff

Good quality fish and chips not the cheapest but not to different to most fish shops.Traditional food is good but not too keen on kebabs from here homemade chilli sauce that destroys any taste budds you may have.All that said a good chippy

Market Place really is the best place for fish and chips in Barton by a long way. It is always very busy and as a result the fish is always freshly cooked. The batter is good and crisp and the chips are nicely cooked and not mawky.There are home-made meat pies but I can't comment on those as I've not tried them. In addition there are Spam fritters and doner kebabs.I am afraid I have to agree with other reviewers about unfriendly service; despite being a fairly regular customer, I have never had a smile. However, I have seen the same staff being very friendly with people they know, so I suspect it's a case of who you are as to what welcome you receive. Sad, as we are all paying the same price and deserve the same level of service.Although the customer service skills could be improved, the food is delicious and cannot be faulted.

I regularly travel around 6 miles to collect and take home their delicious food. Fish are large, portions are chips are large - we find a large portion serves 3 people with ample of chips, fishcakes are homemade and the real bonus is that the shop is spotlessly clean. They also serve a really tasty homemade steak pie!!

A really good choice of food on the menu... And prices not as steep as you would expect. The chips are fab and a large bag will feed 4.... Food cooked really well and batter light and crispy, no soggy white crap underneath.... Really tasty, but he'll for your diet! Once you start, you can't stop eating them.... Well worth a visit...

Being local to Barton we have used this chippy for years and have never being disappointed with the fish and chips.you can tell by the Q at tea time that it's popular.

Ordered haddock and chips, I'm not sure what fish I got, but I'm certain it wasn't haddock. I remember someone else saying they'd experienced the same thing not so long ago... That, coupled with the miserable service and the below-par quality of the chips and, reluctantly, I'm buying from elsewhere from now on.

Staff are always friendly and food is the best! Only place I'd have fish and chips from in the area and only mushy peas I like. Fish is always fresh and chips are good. Yes I'd highly recommend.

This Chippy always has a problem with the fish not crispy and sceptic looking chips. The food is just done and the White chips are greasy. Still popular though.

Been several times hoped it would Improve but sadly not find it too greasy and iff you want a good drink Friday and Saturday night make sure your there by nine o'clock not very happy about cooking fish but look on the door its open till 10pm

Usually we have a piece of cod and a piece of haddock with one portion of chips to share as they are very generous in size. It is a busy chippie so our food is nearly always cooked to order. They do the usual extras such as pies and kebab but have never tried them.

In my humble opinion. This place is best in the area. Every time we go abroad this is our welcome home meal aswel as our weekly treat. Great staff and great prices.

I always visited the Marker Place Fish shop until my father and I were rudely shouted at by the cook.I always eat skinless haddock and when I asked for one the cook decided to wake a utensil and ask what was wrong with the fish that was already cooked. I told him they wasn't skinless which he then smacked his utensil on the counter and stormed to the back to prepare my fish. It had opened about 2 hours before e visited and I am sure the fish which was cooked previously to us coming in would have sold in a matter of minutes so I didn't see the problem. I now go to Taz's fish bar which I have never had a problem with. Plus the price and the food is much better.The customer is always right... Keep that in mind when visiting the Market Place

Having tried all of the Barton chip shops, this one remains my favourite... Chips are nicely prepared and well cooked and the fish and battered sausage are delicious. Ok, the staff aren't always the friendliest in town but I've always found them polite and courteous.

Really tasty food. Well cooked and nice and hot. Friendly and quick service. Just what you want from your local chippy.

We ordered 2 haddock and 1 portion of chips with a sausage and large mushy peas. The fish tasted lovely and was of a good size. The chips were lovely and plenty of them. The mushy peas were great as well. There was a good amount to share out between myself, my wife and our 2 children (aged 2 and 4).

I love the fish it is big and tasteful. I love get a large portion of chips to share with my partner.

We stopped here by chance and I spotted the tripadvisor sticker in the window! I had cod and chips (cod cooked fresh to order) while Russ had a burger and chips. Both were huge, obviously super fresh and really delicious. I've been told and therefore searching, for the great British fish and chips but until today have been sadly let down. The staff were ever so friendly and nice.

Sadly the reviews about the staff on this site are true, but the fish and chips are the best in Barton. When taking a friend who was new to Barton to this shop, I had to forewarn her of the misery so she knew it wasn't personal. If a place can still have a queue out the door when the staff barely speak to you and never smile, it says something about the food :-)

I visit the Market Place a couple of times a month and despite my best efforts to make conversation the lady behind the counter is just rude. She couldn't really be more obnoxious if she tried. Sadly the fish and chips are better than anywhere else in Barton so I put up with the misery!

This is bar far the best fish and chips in Barton. The food is to die for! I don't understand how people are saying the staff are miserable because whenever I go in they are so friendly and welcoming and they ALWAYS have a smile on their face! I can honestly say I've never had better fish and chips and I've been to many chip shops around England but none come close to market place. Great shop! Carry on with the good work whoever owns the shop. Beautiful!

Great food, only down point is the staff! Alll the time looking unhappy like its the end of the world if you order more then one thing! Never once been in and had any of the staff greet me with a smile or a 'hello'

No idea why the staff are so uncommunicative or unhappy looking. Like others I've tried to make polite chit chat and it generally falls on deaf ears. I noticed a different younger woman last time I was in and she was pleasant; keep it up you can show them how to do it girl!

The fish and chips are possibly the best in town. However the staff can seem very unfriendly. This is the only reason they haven't got 5 stars.

This place gets very busy, the fish I ordered was like battered skin and very disappointing but I talked to people in the pub nearby who said it is usually pretty good. Chips were nice though and would give it a second chance

Staff are rude here, I asked for a fish to be dropped in when I walked in, i was glared at by the man frying, only then to be asked 10 minutes later what I wanted to order, had to wait another 10 minutes for it to be cooked.20 minute wait for soggy greasy cod isn't worth it and not at over £5 for the fish and chips. Mushy peas were homemade which is a bonus and were nice, only reason they got 2 stars and not one!

all the fish is cooked to order , so as long as you do not mind a short wait you get really fresh cooked food, service could be more friendly but the food makes up for the service

I have used this as my fish and chip shop of choice for eleven years and the food has never failed. The man, who I assume is the owner, always smiles a greeting across the shop. The assistants have never smiled or exchanged a pleasantry in eleven years.I will still continue to try with them, but don't expect a result from them any day soon. The food, however makes up for their miserable service and they continue to be the best fish and chips for miles.

I went to market place fish and ships today and I can honestly say it was the best fish and chips I have ever had, I live in York and these fish and chips from market place blow all the chip shops there out of water!!! Absolutely Gorgous and I 100% recommend a visit, the staff are so friendly and welcoming and the decor fits the bill, a good old fashion chip shop with a modern vibe!!! Beautiful

owner is very quiet 2 ladies serving never smile very sullen they serve one person at a time then you have to wait till its your turn to ask for fish then it has to be cooked so you wait again this could be done while you are already waiting

Having tried the other fish and chip takeaways in Barton, I can very honestly say that Market Place Fish and Chips is the best in Barton. The fish is never overcooked, the batter is brilliant and the chips are so plentiful that the servers probably need re-educating in portion sizing!After a very poor experience at Taz's in George Street, I will never go there again and will pledge my business to the Market Place Fish and Chip Shop!

I have visited this chip shop for years, only because the food is nice. However, the staff, especially the 'woman' who has worked there for years, is probably the most miserable, hateful, unwelcoming person that I have ever had the misfortune to come across. The rest of the staff come a close second in terms of appalling customer service. I will never go there again - as they make you feel like you are asking for the world - i only wanted a fish!!!!!I can't believe the owner still employs such horrible staff!! Obviously he doesn't care as long as people keep buying the fish and chips!!!!

I have been a regular customer for years but as im a quite person iv never realy spoken much to the staff they havent generaly greeted me well just whos next.. thats it no good buy or thankyou ect . The grey haird man frying is quite rude at times to the staff and customers. My last few visits have been very nice there seems to be a new younger girl working there whos always very polite to me greets with a smile chats to customers nice to see a smile in the place.

We always come here for our fish & chips and can't really knock the food but wouldn't say it's the best in the country! Although the food is nice, the staff always seem so rude, so bored and so unenthusiastic. This would automatically put your experience at this chippy on a downer. The last time we went in (and haven't been since) we were the first in line as they opened, we stood inside the shop for 10 minutes before any member of staff even spoke to us or even said hello. The man who cooks the fish at the back eventually shouted over to us - 'what do you want' just a bit rude! I asked him for a battered pineapple for my mum and he bit my head off and shouted at me asking why I hadn't asked for that as soon as I walked in as they take a while to cook. Maybe if he had taken the time to acknowledge his customers I would of felt more comfortable shouting over to him to ask!! I think they all just need to learn some manors and learn how to smile - then perhaps it could become close the being one of the best chippies!!

the food was very good but the only thing that spoilt it was the miserable old women that was serving when we entered the shop would have killed her to smile or say hallo apparently it would have done because she didn't do either of these things. She said that they had no fish left and just as we where walking out a guy at the back of the shop asked us how many fish we wanted the look old the old women's face when he said this was absolutely horrified that she was having to work later and then as we waited for the order we could tell that she was slagging us off to another staff member. but we had the last laugh when she was forced to work even longer when a women came in and ask for 7 sausage and chips her face at this was so funny :) a suggestion would be to have a word about her attitude towards customers.

First take away I visited when I moved over to lincolnshire, this one does super fish and chips and their donner kebab is better than pizza hot's over the road!

Omg I can't believe it, I went to market fish and chip shop today and I must say the service is excellent, this is the best fish and chips I've ever had. I highly recommend going to this fish shop because its out of this world. I myself have been called " a fish and chip freak" as I sample many fish and chips from many places but I have to say market place tops them all!!

This is the best chip shop for miles, always busy which means always fresh food. There is a big choice and HUGE portions, if there are two of you, try ordering one portion of chips plus your main item, there will be enough. Parking is outside or in the market place.

I've had food from this chippy for a number of years now can be slightly hit and miss I'm not sure i agree with the reviews below especially "the best chippy in the uk" maybe they need to get out of barton and get near the sea, I don't think we can class the humber as the sea. As the title says hit and miss this chip shop can be that numerous times the fish has been rather un pleasant one time smelling my house out so bad It had to be gone off, no fish should do what that did that day, I've also found grey hairs from the male fryer in my chips. most of the time the fish is nice and they are a consistent chip shop the staff are nice and the prices are fairly cheap

Had freshly fried cod (my daughter had freshly fried scampi), chips and mushy peas. Some of the best fish and chips we have had and all freshly prepared.

I love the fish and chips and I drive from quite a few miles away rather than going to our local chippy! Service with a smile too and very good value

I consistently have the best fish & chips from Market Place chippy take -away. Huge fillets of haddock, sweet & succulent. Really big portion of chips (so big I usually buy one portion to share) that are cooked just right so they're fluffy in the middle & a bit crispy on the outside. If you can resisit the haddock, the home made steak pie is delicious. Service is really fast, prices are fantastic. I've tried fish & chips all over the UK including award winning chippies but I've never found any to beat Barton Market Place, I reckon this is the best chipy in the UK!
