Market Place Fish & Chip Restaurant in Derbyshire Dales

Whilst I cannot fault the quality of the food, the lack of toilet facilities causes me a major problem. Previously when we have visited here we were able to use the toilets belonging to the pub next door. Having mobility problems and on medication , I politely asked if it would be possible to use the staff WC. This was refused and I was told to use the public toilets which were a considerable distance away. It took me a very painful 25 minute walk to go there and back.I am 85 years old, leaning heavily on a walking stick . I feel very disappointed as i have visited this fish shop many times in the past.

Forget overpriced pub fish and chips and come to the Market Place chippy! We sat in the little restaurant which was super clean and the staff are warm and friendly. Most importantly we had the BEST fish and chips we’ve had in years. Top quality and really good value. Highly highly highly recommended for a lunch or dinner.

Probably the best chippy around, we travel from matlock to have the fish,chips,curry sauce and mushy peas. The portion sizes are very good the fish and batter are delicious and the chips are not soggy. You can take away or eat in.

Lovely freshly cooked food with large portions. Sit inside or on the outside benches only one small criticism is the bins needed emptying.

Great chippy, we ordered ahead and got an adult gluten free fish and chips with curry sauce, kids cod bites meal and kids chicken nuggets meal. My daughter is autistic and hers had a tiny bit of salt on (probably just from the portion next to it) and they remade it fresh for her with no quibbles at all. Food was great, gf batter was nice and crispy. Curry sauce was the best ever!

Really is as other reviews state, spot on!!! I travelled here as we like to go out for a drive and take lunch in various places. The reviews are good so worth the gamble. Whilst eating my fish and chips (and they were the best I’ve ever had) I was listening to what others said about their food but also how the proprietors served take away customers as well. It’s unique, they actually care about giving you exactly what you want. Keep it up, service this good is rare.

The lad was a bit hasty with the order, but it was confusing with the weird vibes he was getting from our indecisive group. Cooked a fresh haddock for me perfectly, crispy batter, and flaky pieces of haddock in side. My first visit since coeliac diagnosis 7 years ago. Clear menu, great communication from staff and lovely freshly cooked fish and chips. I will definitely return. Note- gluten free only available Monday -Thursday

We first came here many years ago when my daughter was tiny, and were very pleased to see the Market Place Fish and Chip shop in Ashbourne is still open. We always like to have a 'blowout' on our last night of our holiday and the awesome folk here didn't disappoint. We had large cod and chips and some halloumi, the portions were generous and the price wasn't too steep either. Food is ready quickly (they have a neat ordering system so you don't have to cram into the tiny shop and get in everyone's way). Loads of options on the menu. Next time we're up in the Peaks we'll be coming back again. Thanks to the friendly staff!

Absolutely outstanding from start to finish. Fish chips mushy peas absolute perfection. Staff amazing. Didn’t have to wait more than few minutes hate them places that make you wait forever for no good reason not here, would have loved cold fresh tartare sauce not a warm packet but maybe they don’t have the demand for such , I’m Absolutely lost for words about how good this place was.

Looking for some where to eat after visiting Alton Towers with the family and found this place. Everyone agreed these were the best chips we’d had in a long time. Everything was cooked perfectly and the batter was great.

The place couldn’t be more helpful. I ordered on website arrived early not a problem . All staff that served and cooked all excellent considering 1 lady was new she was so welcoming. Food excellent good sized portions and a good range as I am gluten free. Well worth a try if you are gluten free or following this diet. Will be returning.

Fabulous, well cooked, crispy batter and very nice staff. We sat outside but there is indoor seating. Only drawback is there are no toilets just the public ones across the market square and up a hill!

Visiting the area, this was the second Fish and chip shop I tried and clearly the best In the area. Fish was perfectly cooked with super tasty batter, chips perfect and lovely curry sauce/ mushy peas as well. Shall be returning soon.

We stopped off on the motorcycle, parked in the Square and being a bit hungry and limited food availability due to lock down just starting ease, we shared fish and chips. After a long walk around Dovedale and Ilham, we decided to head into Ashbourne for lunch. My friend recommended Market Place Fish and Chips, so we thought we’d give it a try: we were not disappointed! We dined in, which was clean and tidy. The fish and chips were so tasty, the fish was cooked to perfection, with a light, crispy batter. The staff were polite and friendly! We think we spoke to the owner on the way out, who was also so friendly and took the time to ask if we enjoyed our food! I really look forward to returning very soon!

As visitors to Ashbourne, after reading all the wonderful reviews below, we chose to buy take-out fish and chips from Market Place for our tea. Unfortunately they proved to be, quite possibly, the worst fish and chips we have ever eaten, anywhere! The chips were hard and had that 'warmed up from lunch time' feel about them. And the fish, which was supposed to be haddock, was nothing of the kind. It was tasteless, lacking any texture and was quite frantly inedible - even the dog turned it's nose up at it. The service was good and the portion size huge, but the food was appalling. Looking at all the positive, glowing reviews we can only assume that we came on a bad day. Sorry Market Place.

We travel from Manchester to Ashbourne just so I can enjoy the best fish and chips in Derbyshire.its a family run shop it's clean and comfortable.when we said the tea pot was too mall it was replaced in a most friendly manner. There a few steps down into the restaurant. Service is quick.

On 6th April 2019, Gary and I got married in Ashbourne - we chose here to have our reception, this is a family run establishmernt and very family friendly too. Our party consisted of the 2 of us, plus 1 baby and 10 other adults, all wanting different things to eat. We can't praise them enough our wee grandson only 3 weeks old was made welcome, my son and daughter-in-law both vegetarians had no problem whatsoever choosing something to eat. The owners of this fabulous place really made our day and everyone left feeling happy and full!

We visited here as our son is coeliac and on a Monday they do gluten free fish and chips! They were the best fish and chips I have eaten in a long time. My son absolutely loved his gf ones too.
