Market Cafe Haggerston in Hackney

A serious pet peeve is folks advertising fresh juices when they are not. For this reason I always ask very specifically whether the orange juice is freshly pressed before ordering. I was assured it was fresh yet the colour, acidity and taste clearly indicated otherwise. Even if pressed in the morning, fresh OJ doesn’t go acidic over a few hours. I didn’t get reimbursed despite not drinking it. Pro tip: be transparent with your customers, it’s not a big ask.

Nice place to spend the afternoon in

Weird frantic energy in there. Could tell it was seated once greeted but there was no one at the door so walked in and an older woman asked what we were doing. I said I was waiting to be seated and said *I can't remember his name* would seat us. No idea why a name helps when I've no idea who works there. Anyway, older guy was lovely; gave us a few options and off we went to sit. Servers were polite and friendly although the one tried to avoid eye contact at the best of time. Tall guy who took over the door was managing seating and checking on diners at the same time, may sound like he's just doing his job but as it was the first warm and sunny Saturday this year, he didn't really have chance to relax. Can't say it's anything special with so many options on the market, but I've always wanted to go there as it's always packed. Will probably grab a drink from the takeaway door and sit on the canal rather than eat there, as the food isn't anything to write home about (burger tasted a little cheap and the slice of cheese added nothing to the burger).

Went with a friend who was craving brunch on a Tuesday and this was one of the few places that had it after 12pm. The place was empty, but staff was super friendly without overwhelming us or forgetting about us. Food was delish - best hollandaise sauce - and so were the drinks. We ended up staying for a second drink instead of going to another bar as the vibe was great. I've been during the weekend as well and it is definitely busier and slightly less friendly. But hey, it's a tourist area full of people, it would be hard to keep the same chilled vibe. With that being said, I'm coming back for sure.

Staff are so rude I thought it was intentional. My friend got asked 'where are you going' when going to the bathroom being told toilets were for customers only, after having bought a coffee. Waitress unapologetic. Another waitress came up to my friend and I and rudely asked my friend 'has she (referring to me) ordered anything?' whilst I was still choosing... why not just offer to take my order? Epitomises the pretentious pain of Broadway Mkt's gentrification...

Nice place to stop for a bit. I visited just to meet with a pal who was working in the space and we had a quick Mezcal Margarita. Would visit again.

Our friend who happened to be our guide too in London suggested that we eat brunch here after browsing through the market. The food was ok, but when it was time to pay, the waitress looked irritated that each person settled their own bill. Well, it’s better than having 8 people sit in 8 separate tables. Besides, it’s not like you’re using an abacus to add up what each one of us consumed. lol

American server was an absolute delight, so attentive. However man with spiky hair gave me an offensive amount of mustard. Please don’t insult me like that again. I can handle my mustard.

One of the worst meals out I've had in a looong time - if we hadn't been on a tight schedule and so hungry I would have made quite a scene at the restaurant. We ordered a full English (passable, but very nondescript), a fried fish sandwich and a reuben. I don't want to waste a huge amount of energy on such a pathetic attempt at cuisine so I'll highlight the worst part, the reuben. First of all it was TINY, and came on a plate with no garnish, crisps, chips, salads, anything except it's poor pathetic self. There was very little filling. It was tasteless, mostly saurkraut and very thick, bland slices of beef. No melty cheese, no Russian - or any kind of - dressing, the beef was dry, the bread really very dry and awful, and I've already mentioned the size. IT COST £15. Now, I know a LOT of places in London where £15 will buy you a decent enough sandwich and you suck up the price because it's London but this really took the biscuit. The service was adequate but not particularly friendly or helpful. The environment I imagine gets good later in the day, but I can't give anywhere that charges so much for such shoddy food a genuine high mark for atmosphere because we left feeling confused, more than anything else. Terrible.

Amazing spot except the middle age Asian lady who’s staring at you and treating you like hospitality had never been her dream field. Thought it was a one time incident until I read the comments I was not the only one and tried the place the 3rd time when she was in the premises

Aperol spritz wasn’t tasty at all

Looks like a pub. Has a bar. And taps. But it's an overpriced cafe. I did have a very nice half of keg pale (no cask ales), though. Just put off by the instructions not to leave your table. Not to order at the bar. Eggs on toast was £13-50 plus service to help added to bill. If I want waiter service, I'll go to a wine bar or wotnot.

Lovely setting next to the canal. Drinks are a bit pricey.

Favourite place to go on a sunny weekend. Nice spot to get a drink just next to but away from the business of the bustling broadway market. Next to the canal and so very pretty and welcoming!

Market Cafe has the vibe of a neighbourhood pub. Food was good, maybe a bit on the pricey side for what you get yet totally still within reason. Staff was within expectation for the type of place, nothing extraordinary but definitely not rude nor disrespectful like some of the other reviews state. Overall a solid place if you’re looking for something that’s decent but nothing out of the ordinary. Great place to grab a bite to eat and a couple of pints in the evening sun.

The only good thing about this place was the kind waitress .. everything else I would say quite the opposite .. manager super pretentious and wants to be right all the time .. worst cocktails I had in along time. Watery martini that taste like coffe that they had in the shaker that they haven’t cleaned properly … gimlet that served with soda when I asked for one straight up they brought it still on ice telling me this is the original version … I mean keep your ego to yourself and give the costumer what he wants to drink …

We had the best brunch here. Recommend!

"Fresh juice" is listed on the menu at £4.95. I ordered this but what I got was a "juice drink" from a carton and it was not nice. That is false advertising. And it was overpriced.

Love this place in east London for nice food and atmosphere in front of the canal. If it’s sunny, this place outdoors will be the best plan

Went today to have a pint, waited at the side outside for a table to free up. My friend was able to use the toilet while we waited. 15 mins later I went to use the toilets. Went in and was asked what I was doing very aggressively by a older "gentleman". Said I was waiting round the corner for a space outside, was coming in to buy a pint and needed to use the toilet. I then tried to head towards the toilet, the staff member then stepped in front of me then said "no you can buy a drink first then go to the toilet!". This was infront of 3 other members of staff and a room full of customers. I felt incredibly humiliated and intimidated. I can understand that members of the public would use the toilet without being customers however myself and my friends had the full intention of staying there. Immediately left and went somewhere else. Awful customer service! Avoid If you want a nice environment.

Great service, good atmosphere and food.

A staff signalled us to leave in a passive aggressive manner before we finished our drinks. We just wanted to hang around and chat like others around us. But he brought the bill when I still had half of my drink, signalled to some people waiting implying that we would leave soon, right in front of us. He did not do this to others who were here before us which seems a bit unfair. Other reviews commented on their unpleasant experiences with the same staff member. Aside from that, it was the milkiest latte I’ve ever had.

Great atmosphere, the capuccino is not that great (too much milk, covered in chocolate powder). Very cute salt shakers.

Cozy place with nice options on the menu. We came here after going to the market. It's a nice vibe, very popular it seemed. The pancakes were a bit chewy. Did not seem home made, but the place was great. Try the mimosas.

I've never written a google review before, but unfortunately the coffee and food at the Market Cafe was so poor today that it feels necessary. The coffee was burned and watery, and our food - avocado with poached eggs - was very underwhelming, with both poached eggs coming out as cooked through boiled eggs, and the avocado being a bland guacamole. The hash browns are the same you would find in the freezer isle at Tesco. Service was acceptable, and at least it was nice and warm inside. As far as I can tell almost any other cafe on Broadway would be more enjoyable, even if they are all similarly overpriced.

£5.60 for an Americano with an extra shot. Great spot if you are pro cost-of-living crisis or if you like being ripped off.

Terrible customer service with arrogant lady.

On a sunny day, the seats outside are all full and there's a nice buzz in the street. The seating indoors wasn't as appealing, however, we did find a spot. Servers were all very nice. We had a drink and a bowl of (rather overpriced) fries. Loos weren't very clean. But everything was fine. Dog friendly

The atmosphere of the cafe is great but that's where the good things end. The pancakes I've ordered were more like sponge cake, and the portion is small; their version of Full English Breakfast came with bacon that tasted bad, baked beans that tasted bad, and the rest were meh. For these prices I expected much much better.

The owner is really rude and has no idea how to be kind to people. I have no idea how this place is in business with this guy running it.

I had an okey breakfast today while I was eating a homeless man approached me for money, I said I would be happy to buy him breakfast instead the manager refused to make a take away breakfast ( they normally do takeaway's) he said he didn't want to get involved feeding homeless people but then also insisted he wasn't homeless. What was is market cafe ? Mistreatment of homeless people is discriminatory !!!

The best croque madame I had ever had in London the toast was croustillant it was like in Paris Blast from the past My mate did take avocado on toast with poached eggs Very pleased The coffee was good we will be back soon

This place was so cool I came out 25 years younger with a full beard wearing a Kaftan! Loads to look at and great coffee too. A real surprise find.

Really dry schnitzel and calamari, the burrata was bad too. I am shocked that this place is still open considering how poor the food is. How can you mess up a schnitzel?

I used to like this place but clearly something is not going well here. Meat sandwich that tastes vegetarian (they cut down 2/3 of the meat they would prev put in it). Some of the staff is soooo emotionless and unhelpful. Sad.

A delicious breakfast with friends! I came here post run for a nice fry up and I was not left disappointed! The sausage and egg cooked to perfection and whatever was added to those mushrooms I imagine to be a family secret as old as time! I cannot wait for my next visit.

I've been this cafe for several times, today this middle age Asian lady server was having a really bad attitude to warning me don't touch the plug under the shelf which not allowed to customer (I was allowed to charge my laptop for last few times by other severs)that I don't know about it. ( there is no any sign on it )I do hope she can be nice to everyone in the future :) btw the latte is really good :)

Cafe on the corner of the market. Staff with a sense of humor (we weren't allowed a table if we only drank coffee). Good local beer (the Five Points brewery is around the corner), and decent food. Nice place to watch people in a Sunday afternoon.

Great seats inside and outside. Salads are so yummy, staff are so lovely.

Haven’t tried the food, but me and my boyfriend come here whenever we’re at Broadway Market for an evening drink and a nice view of the canal. Staff are always friendly and the drinks on offer are delicious. Also not too loud inside so perfect after a long day to chill and chat. We’ll keep coming back!

The 1 star is for the kind waitress who sat us down. The tables are tiny so as a group of 3 she allowed us to put 2 together. After that our experience went rapidly down hill. A rude man who I can only assume was the manager came over & brusquely demanded we gave back “his table” & insisted he could sit 4 people at it. The food sadly was no better. The veggie breakfast came with a sausage & bacon! We had to send it back. The fried eggs were hard and the sides of broccoli cold. They had to be replaced. The £17 bowl of noodles was small & disappointing with not much else in it. No apologies. Nothing taken off the bill. It’s sad because we are local & this place used to be great.

Horrible experience. Asked to use the restroom but it was only for customers so bought black coffee for £4, that I ended not getting but paid for as it took them a very long time to make.. the restroom were disgusting, staff unpleasant/rude and I would never eat there.

My full English was smaller than my husband`s, but it looked good and tasted the same. Should try and make the portions fairly equal. Otherwise our drinks were good and the staff was charming.

Borderline rude when we arrived with pushchairs and during our lunch. If you do not like kids around just inform beforehand.

Love this café, recommend coming here either for brunch (they have all the delicious classics and some new things to discover) or for a beer in sunset (cafe gets a beautiful light) Super friendly staff and very cosy relaxed atmosphere. My favourite café in the area

Awesome burger and chips. I had take away after a long night and was treated attentively while I waited for my order. Wished I lived on the street and not visiting because I’d imagine the rest of the food was good

There’s nothing wrong with this place to be honest, but it’s just completely average in terms of quality of food. The staff can be hit or miss in terms of politeness. I think it’s because they know they don’t really need to be polite because their cafe is in such a good location that they’re never gonna struggle for business. I ordered a Caesar salad and I was shocked by how meagre it was as a serving size for the price. Most of the restaurants would have probably doubled the portion size for that price. I feel ripped off and annoyed which is not an ideal feeling when you’re paying money for food at a restaurant. That being said the interior is really nice, and if you are lucky enough to get an outdoor seats on a sunny day, it’s a really pleasant place to go. I just think they can do better in terms of value for money.

Food was decent! But the portion sizes are ridiculously small, and we all (party of 5) felt like they were cutting corners wherever they could. The “fresh” orange juice came with so much ice in the glass that it took three sips to finish. Upon asking for sauces, we were given 20p coin sized dollops of mayo and ketchup, enough for 1.5 fries. Hash browns tortilla chip sized and come in twos. Food was delicious but …. portion sizes were whack
