Lovely looking cafe in Glasgow's West End. I had haddock with some coleslaw, my partner had burger and chips, and we both had a mug of tea each. My haddock initially had a strange taste and I soon realised it was the tartare sauce. It was horrible! I ate what I could of the rest but the tartare sauce left a nasty taste in my mouth. That said, I had a few chips from my girlfriend's plate and they were very nice. No grease at all, and in fairness the fish wasn't greasy either. My girlfriend didn't really enjoy her burger saying that the bun didn't taste great and the Gold Star tomato ketchup wasn't great either. The lady who served us though was so welcoming and friendly and a credit to this place. She was lovely and the tip we gave was for her. The cafe is basic but equally quite stylish with exposed brickwork lit up which I liked, and the prices were OK. Please, please, please though get rid of them tartare sauce sachets. I know Gold Star tomato ketchup is what chippies in Scotland use so I can't really suggest changing. I did like the coleslaw though. Food. 6/10 Service. 10/10

Now refurbished and called Simeone's, but still owned by the same family. £8.70 for a sit-in sausage supper and a giant mug of tea is the best value you'll get on Byres Road. Lovely hot fresh chips and crunchy batter on the sausages (two! Bargain!). A marvellous way to set yourself up for a night on the bevvy.

Stumbled across restaurant upon a recommendation and we were not disappointed. We both got fish and chips, the fish batter was delicious and crispy without being greasy, the chips were excellent and I had a delicious coffee afterwards. The waitress was amazing, we are visiting Glasgow with a young baby and nothing was too much trouble, she kept my food hot till I fed her, brought hot water to heat baby’s food, she was welcoming chatty and made us feel at home. Highly recommended and I will definitely visit again myself…

Recently refurbished and with a change of name, it’s now SIMEONE’S It’s the same family run business. Staff are very friendly and food is always excellent. I nip in often for anything from a roll and sausage to an all day breakfast, fish tea, or home made pasta. There’s more choices on the menu including a deep fried Mars Bar, which I had once 😂. Simeone’s has a take away (chip shop) and a separate but adjacent restaurant area where you see the same faces time and time again (always a good sign, as is the fact that many family members work in the business. Other staff have been there years too)

I used to love this place and ordered frequently when it was still named "Mario's Plaice". I loved the freshness and quality of the food. I assumed after the renovation and renaming to Simeone's we would get equal or better quality. However, after going to simeones not long after it opened I was left disappointed with the meal killer of having bones in the fish. For a fish and chip shop this is the one thing that puts me and no doubt most others off, no one wants to be picking out fish bones from their mouth having a fish supper. I thought hopefully this was an off day and maybe the quality wasn't there yet due to having just reopened so now a few months later I returned and sadly I had the same experience again. First I was enjoying the fish with nice the nice batter and great chips only to then catch more bones in my mouth. Even after attempting to continue eating the fish the bones continued. Having this experience even once can put you off a chippy but twice, I'm not sure I'll go back and will instead stick to the alternatives.

Just been in for 2 fish teas to ease the lockdown boredom. Asked for special fish instead of batter (happy to pay an extra couple of quid for that)...when bill arrived it worked out at an extra £10 to have breadcrumbs!!!! ...having a laugh! Such a shame as food was great and staff were lovely but leaves a sour taste as ripping people off. Too many other options such as Catch or Old Salty’s...so sorry Simeones we won’t be back

Although the staff in the restaurant area of Mario's Plaice are very pleasant and chatty, it's not enough to take away from the poor value for money on offer here. With the breakfast, you are unable to swap items meaning if you don't like an item (e.g. potato scone) then you still have to pay for the full breakfast with this item missing and no replacement of anything else - other breakfast spots in the West End (and pretty much everywhere) allow this, so I think Mario's Plaice is really missing a trick here, especially given their prices are not the cheapest. You also only get one of each item (one strip of bacon, one sausage etc.) - that's not a big breakfast so it shouldn't be stated as that - I will also note that previously when I have bought a roll from here there has been one strip of bacon, which only covers half the roll - not great. The takeaway area is also not great value for money at all - you hardly get any chips in a bag and again, the prices are not cheap, so I would expect to get way more chips than is offered - the portion sizes really need to be looked at in this place as the value for money is shocking which is exactly why my partner and I will not be back, which is a real shame.

My niece and I have just had the most delicious and yummiest dinner ever at Mario's Plaice! We stumbled upon it by accident! We were initially heading to University Cafe however we were bitterly disappointed to discover that by 8:00 pm it had in fact closed! Having a niece with great demands of desiring 'chips and curry sauce' I slowly continued up Byres Road where I saw the beautiful Mario's Plaice! We were warmly greeted by a legend of a lady named ALICE who could not have been anymore friendly, charming and hospitable towards us! There was nothing that was too much trouble for her!

Clean and friendly local place for good food. Prices are right. The staff were very friendly. If you are in the area and need something to eat give them a try. The customers are friendly as well. This restaurant is kid friendly with lots of local families. I had the Fish and Chip dinner. Generous portions, cooked well.

we have been recomended this place by local as "where the locals go" and really thats exactly what i wanted! wanted to try real scottish dishes and i loved it! no culen skink (kind of fish soup)but the soup of the day was vegetable broth which was eaten till last drop. fish and chips as the main course.the lenth of fish was bigger than the diameter of the plate and was very tasty. if you are after good home made food -- go here! wont be dissapointed!

Visited for a quick bite to eat and wasn't disappointed. Amazing panini filled with mozzarella and black better and such value for money. Waited for a latte longer than the food but would definitely go back.

I was here this morning for a fry up to combat my excesses from the night before. Our waitress was great. Quick and warm service. Fry up was delicious. The eggs were perfect. Quality was good. These guys do a mean fish and chips and easily knock the socks off the closest competition on both price and quality. This is fish and chips the way it's meant to be served: hot, fresh and with a human touch. Well done. I've been going here for years and I will continue to do so.

Les frites ont le goût d'huile de poisson, le poisson quant à lui est copieux mais le goût de l'huile est trop prononcé. La viande du burger ressemble plutôt à de la chair à saucisse qu'à du 100% boeuf. Bref adresse à éviter

One kid wanted fish n chips, one kid wanted a tuna panini, I wanted some soup....after a full lap of Byres road we realised Marios did it all!. Food was delicious. Scotch broth was lovely, fish tea was brilliant recommendation by the server and even the salad garnish in the panini was scoffed by kid 2.

Not been for many years. Walked past and could not resist revisiting. Surprised that I recognised some of the ladies there, so they must have had good business. The menu was simple: common people's dishes no frills. So I pushed the boat out for a Mario's fish dinner. Haddock, not cod - Good!! The batter is lightly crispy, and not too airy or fluffy, and the fish was kept hot by the batter right up to the last bite - that is what the batter is for! Served with chips fried in fresh oil, small tub of peas, and well-buttered white sliced bread, and a cup of tea, what an original meal. I saw other people ordering sandwiches and paninis and other lunches as well, and all of them came very quickly and without fuss. Still the best. No frills. Practical. Good

The food was delicious and was served reasonably quickly. I've never had, or even heard of 'king rib' (we don't seem to get these in Central/Southern England!) and the waitress informed me that these weren't like the usual ribs that you'd get in TGI Fridays, for example. However, I ordered it with chips and it was a delicious meal overall. Definitely worth a visit if you're on Byres Road and want a chippy tea.

The first time I have been in a while. We both had a pannini with a side portion of delicious chippy chips. I also had a lovely cup of coffee. Can't fault it. Great place for basic, filling and delicious food. The also had a nice selection of pasta dishes that I must try. The macaroni cheese looked amazing! Can't wait to return.

If you want a fish supper on Byres are it's got to be here! Fish is cooked fresh, not left in the warming cabinet. Crucial for a perfect fish supper. Staff are great too, especially the ladies on the takeaway counter.

Really nice Scottish breakfast but pig headed poor service. Was told I couldn't swap beans on the menu for a fried tomato (it was ok last week with a different waitress) but would have to pay for the extra item (85p). Seriously? Is it too complicated to plate a half tomato rather than a scoop of beans? How NOT to run a cafe.

I've been to Mario's several times and love it. It's cheap and cheerful and you get a perfectly cooked good old fashioned fish tea. Lots of other choice on the menu too. The staff are always friendly and efficient. Great choice if you are on a limited budget and want to sit in for your dinner. Writing this review is making me want to return!

Travelling back from Kinning Park with my eldest son, I decided to stop off here for a bite to eat as I needed to pick up a few things anyway. Overall, it was some good scran. Aside from the food, I also thought it was brilliantly priced (Kids eating for just £1), the staff were decent and the cleanliness of the seating area was on point. In comparison to the Morrison’s café in Anniesland, which has plummeted in quality over the last four months, it really was night and day in comparison. I opted for the Sweet Chilli Chicken Panini (lovely) and a Cappuccino (unfortunately the machine only poured 2/3 of a mug). The wee man had Pancakes, Crisps and a Fruit Shoot (unfinished but he seemed happy enough with it). I was impressed with the choice on offer - it certainly exceeded what I’d expect from a Supermarket café. Being a fan of Rangers, I’ll most likely be in the area again very soon and would happily head back to Asda.

I am attending at course at the Clyde College and this wee cafe happens to be nearby - it's very convenient for lunch when I have classes the whole day. I had lunch in a couple of occasions so far, I tried their soup and jacket potato. The prices are affordable, the food is good and the staff are super friendly.

I visited The Lauder in Sauchihsll Street in October 2919 when it reopened after the fire that destroyed the buildings next to it we were served beautifully cooked and very tasty food. I have visited Glasgow twice since then last week ( end of February 20w9) being the most recent and it is now my choice of place to eat. The staff are great easpecially one young lady called Lynn who has been the ultimate in custoner service. Even remembering me from previous visits and ensuring that I get a table and great service. I will be back as not only is the foid well cooked and presebted it is great value for money .
