So unbelievably sad to see the end of this fine establishment! I have been a customer since 1980. Simply wonderful! Mario's front-of-house skills coupled with Gianni's cooking (and drumming) expertise meant a night here was always a special occasion. In fact, although it could be argued that a restaurant should be judged primarily on its culinary qualities, it was the combination of service, food, ambience and bon homie that made Mario & Gianni's stand out. Birthday meals, romantic meals and company meals - all were hosted here with aplomb! A great loss to Hazel Grove. Footnote: I went to visit Gianni at the hospice when the cruellest disease of them all was taking him. With characteristic joviality, he said he was looking forward to meeting David Bowie and Elvis. 😊

Great Italian so sad it's gone miss Mario and the karaoke nights covid killed it but missed the final farewell that Mario would of put on if it wasn't for Covid , wherever all the staff are I wish them lots of love and happiness x

We decided to give this restaurant a try as it has been a long established eatery in Hazel Grove for a romantic valentines meal. Sadly I wished we hadn't bothered. The restaurant itself is very traditional and cosy looking and I thought it was going to be a night to remember, it was but for all the wrong reasons. We decided to order starters, we shared bruschetta which was nice and a decent portion and pate which was clearly supermarket bought. I was prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt, as the pate was priced at £6.60 and on the specials board so didn't really live up to my expectations. For the second course I chose calzone whilst my partner had a pasta dish with ham. We waited Well over 50 mins for our mains but there was a large party of very noisy people in before us. So I was very much looking forward to my main, it was quite overdone however as it was rock hard and had very little filling. I however had made the better choice! My partners dish was tiny and had virtually no ham in it, it was as if the chef had poured some ready bought tomato sauce over some pasta, very disappointing considering we paid some £9.80 for it!! We finished up and left without bothering looking at any desserts! To sum up save your money and go elsewhere! Sorry Mario.

We’re so glad we travelled 30 minutes to this place. Our parents told us to come and wow we weren’t disappointed. The ribs and the sauce were perfect and the calzone was the best calzone I’ve had. Our young boy has officially titled the restaurant his favourite restaurant. Highly recommended. Fantastic service as well to match the great food.

I went recently, However I had no choice as it was an anniversary party. To say there was no ambiance is an understatement, you would expect at the very least, one Italian member of staff, nope, all looked like preteen girls local serving, didn’t have hardly any beers, and as usual none on draft. The food was abysmal as well as the atmosphere, if you can call it that. Don’t waste your money and time, the owners a obviously trying to run the place on a shoestring with buffalo prices for sparrow portions.

I was pleasantly surprised when we walked in - this place is quite charming from the inside and far exceeded the expectation I had, based on the exterior. The food was very nice and at a good price point. It's just a shame that the staff, particularly the guy who seated us, couldn't have been a bit friendlier. He seemed to be watching us a lot, with a very serious face - hardly relaxing. Barely a hello when we came in and no goodbye when we left This place is a firm 4 if they could just be a bit friendlier. I'll give them another chance as I can see us becoming loyal patrons if things improve on that front.

We was in here last night, first time we have been here before, driven passed it for years! It’s a hidden gem! Staff are superb! The menu was good, special board was good and the food was amazing! Will defiantly be going again soon!!! Sorry I haven’t been in sooner!!

We must have driven past this small fronted Italian a thousand times without a thought. Today we decided to try it after a friend recommended it. The welcome was excellent with an older Italian gentleman. We chose our meal whilst being told about the specials, my wife had soup followed by penne Al forno, I had ribs followed by carbonara. All the food was piping hot and really tasty. The place had a nice atmosphere so overall really good and highly recommended .

We were shown to our table which was in the upstairs part of the restaurant by a young lad who had no interest. The table wasn’t set, it was dirty and the lad left. We set our own table, and waited, and waited and waited. After 25 minutes we still had no menus nor had we been approached for a drink ( we were the only ones in this area) I said to my family of eight that we should leave, so we did. When we all walked past the waiter downstairs he arrogantly said to me “table not good enuf’ for yer?’ I said “not really no” and off we trotted elsewhere. I would never go to this grotty little place again.

We have been visiting Mario and Giannis for over a decade. Our most recent visit was for a family birthday and our table for 10 was looked after with as much dedication as a table for 2. Empty plates for everyone and great food that was matched by great service. Go and Visit!!

Went for a mid week celebration meal for my daughter's birthday. Very welcoming during the telephone booking only an hour before. Upon arrival and throughout our visit, Mario was the perfect host. Charming and cheerful throughout. Very reasonable prices and good portions. General decor / ambience isn't high end, more "everyday" but is more than made up for in all other ways. I let it slip whilst paying why we were there. Before we knew it, all the staff grouped together in their kitchen whites, etc to sing my daughter an impromptu 'Happy Birthday'. It was a lovely touch. She went the colour of the arrabiata sauce! Support your local small Italian.....they deserve it 😁 Thank you Mario & Gianni

We have been to Mario and Giannis quite a few times recently and we have always found the best of welcomes from the owner and from the staff. The food has been excellent, The ribs were a meal in themselves, calamari perfect and mussels too die for.Mains of steak, fish, pizza, pasta always perfect. So good thst we are taking a visitor from Majorca there tomorrow. Do not bebieve any poor review. Some people do anything to get themselves noticed. Rod Lambert..

So glad we booked. It is a small restaurant that we expected to be quiet at 6 pm. BIG mistake - every table was filled. The food was perfectly cooked and the service friendly.

We have been coming here for years. Its a little restaurant, very reasonably priced and excellent service. Never fails to deliver. A pity in my view that they dont open Sundays/Mondays.

No es pretencioso, ni elegante, es una pequeña empresa familiar con la que se habría encontrado hace 20 años. Los dueños y la familia sirven las mesas y no podrían ser más amables, a menudo los escuchas cantar en italiano con la música tradicional que se escucha en el fondo. Hemos comido de todas partes del menú, entrantes, pasta, pizza, carne (la ternera es excelente), platos especiales y dulces, y siempre ha sido una comida increíble y una buena relación calidad-precio. El especial para madrugadores de un principiante y principal (de 5:30 p.m. a 7 p.m.) para 11. 95 es realmente un buen valor. No dudaría en recomendarlo y sin duda volveremos.

What a little gem. Staff could not do enough to ensure our night was a delight. Food was beautiful & considering it was Christmas celebrations they did not hold back. Not over priced which was another bonus Will be taking the husband back soon to share the experience. Would reccommend for sure. Always wanted to visit after passing by for years & wondered how it would be. I'm so glad I eventually ventured through the door.

We had a table booked for 5.30 for four.we arrived 15 mins early to be greeted by Mario himself. What a charming man. He talked us through the special board, what a great choice.

Joined some friends for a birthday celebration (warning) they will push the 'Party Menu' in your face at £18 a pop for three fixed courses, ask for the 'normal menu' if you only want starter & main or main & sweet. I ordered two items off the normal menu (how complicated is that) chaotic ordering ask everyone what they wanted then shouted out your order missed someone of completely, if you have the memory of a goldfish you should not be taking food orders. Received my starter a bowl of mushrooms (£6.50) but was mixed up with the 'Party Menu' so expected to share with the group as part of the 'Party Menu' so I only had 3 mushrooms ? Main was very average £9 cannelloni (microwave ready meal standard) nothing with it i.e salad etc. Confusion billing up wanted to charge me the fixed £18 for my microwaved ready meal and x3 mushrooms, got very shirty when said I would only pay for what I ordered still paid (£6.50) for the x3 mushrooms I had. Gave the lad serving a 20 pound note for the wifes £18 meal and he pocketed the £2 change cheeky sod never came back, so by the end of the night I was £8.50 out of pocket out of the £65 paid. So if you are looking to waste a big chunk of your money on microwave ready meal quality food and expensive drinks its the place for you, me never again.

I have not been for a couple of years and decided to pop in . I am glad I did the garlic bread is to die for and the steak was superb. Great relaxed evening staff so welcoming and friendlyhave been back again

We visited the restaurant last night. At the time we arrived we were able to take advantage of the early evening offer. We could choose from any starter and any pizza or pasta dish. My wife had the tuna bean salad and I had the melon & prawns we then both had pizza half a carafe of house white wine and finished with coffee that was included in the price.

Meal was excellent and mario and his staff were really helpfully and informative about the choice of food to select. The selection of food on the menu was excellent. The choice of wine was good Service was excellent

Traditional Italian we have been visiting for years, food is always spot on....the spare ribs in the secret sauce are the best you will taste. It's small so best to book of a weekend.

Where do I start Been coming to here for at least 3 years on a regular basis We have all our family parties here as the food is amazing, mario is a brilliant host and can't do enough. Food is always a high standard and the spare ribs are to die for. We came tonight for my sister in laws 18th and they will let you bring your own cake and slice for dessert if so but we were on the party menu for £16.95 with dessert included as well as starter and any main. They have karaoke later on which is always a ball!!We got engaged here and mario is now like family when we visit. Go to go place I can not rate highly enough we love it here!!!! Xxxx

Visited on a cold January night, didn't feel the atmosphere was very warm, not the welcome I've had previously. Ordered a thin base pizza, can only describe as average, base was far to tough to cut.

Do not know where to start, I like to visit different Italian restaurants as eating at the same one can get rather boring. I gave Mario's a try, I walked in and saw a member of staff just sat on her mobile on the steps and she said "One second" I was then seated by a man who didn't even say hello, he thrused the menu upon me and that was that. Decor is tacy and far outdated, the staff are too in your own face and the food was a cut short of acceptable. For the price, totally not worth it.There is several Italian restaurants further up the road past Asda, try them!

Great staff only bettered by excellent food.The beautiffuly prepared food is served by very friendly, enthusiastic staff who know how to make you feel welcome.With no immediate parking available there is a Sainsbury's within a few yards where there is an abundance of space.

We've been coming here for years now. Always loved the food, the atmosphere and the lovely welcome. A quaint family run restaurant, a taste of Italy. You won't be disappointed! Hubby loves the Calzone, I love the Pollo Crema - consistently good every time we come here!

My mother and I had a lovely meal last Saturday evening and were treated like royalty from the moment we arrived Our meal was beautifully cooked and we enjoyed every mouthful We didn'thave dessert but will do so on our return visit

Everything is always fantastic, from the food to the staff. The Italian style ribs are to die for, the pasta was amazing so tasty and fresh, the garlic bread is also fantastic lots of garlic flavour and they always do us half plain half tomato:) the staff are very friendly and happy to have a chat with you which is lovely, nothing is to much to ask and they've always got a great big smile on there face, definatly one of our favpourite restaurants and always look forward to returning.

I came here for my birthday with a large group. The restaurant was very busy and the atmosphere was good but the food order was delayed and some items were wrong or didn't arrive. The food wasn't fantastic - didn't feel authentic. once the karaoke started it was great!

Was in Stockport for Stone Roses gig at the Etihad. Found this place by accident. Food was fantastic and the service was first class. Very traditional Italian restaurant. The two hosts were fantastic and first class gentleman. Prices are very reasonable. Would definitely visit again.

Visited with family and received great service the food was gorgeous especially the garlic bread and the restraunt has a very authentic feel.

You could easily drive past but stop and eat - this place is great. The food is always excellent and the kareoke is great fun.

I haven't been here for about 7 years, last night we drove past in the hope they could squeeze a table of two in. It was still exactly as I remember, lovely friendly service and excellent food! We had garlic bread and ribs to start, both great! Huge portion of ribs.Followed by calzone and salmon pasta again great sized portions and cooked perfectly! Nearly didn't have a dessert but we decided to share profiteroles, I'm so glad we did! They are absolutely gorgeous definitely recommend them! Will definitely be returning, perfect place for a quiet meal with nice food and good service

Ive been to this restaurant a few times over the years. Back in the eighties it was a great place but then again it didnt have much competition back then. It hasnt changed at all since then (I think its even the same decor although I couldnt swear to that) with the same people running it. The food is ok, Ive had pizza and ive had steak and both were alright, no complaints. But thats it Im afraid There wasnt any pazzaz, sparkle or anything extra special. I suppose I could go somewhere else for that and generally I do. Its a shame as it was once a really top quality Italian but I think its been left behind by other, newer, more dynamic restaurants.

The place is freezing so take a jumper. Were unable to warm up at all, there is simply not enough heating. The food is good when it arrives. Seated at 7pm last night and served at 7.55. My personal bug bear, people seated after us being served first this time so probably won't go again.

Lovely staff but a very poor quality steak which I was unable to eat as it was mainly gristle covered in pepper sauce. It may be a coincidence but both myself and partner had upset stomachs the following day. The garlic bread was very nice.

Always a worthwhile visit run by Italians. Service attentive, food lovely and their early bird menu is extremely good value. Best Italian in hazel grove.

Went to Mario & Gianni's for New Years Eve - £35.00 per head - what a wonderful meal we had. Superb service as well as excellent menu and food which just kept coming and coming, 5 courses in all plus lemon sorbet and port. Well done to all the team - we will see you soon for another super meal and also for next New Years Eve.

i have been to this restaurant a few times.Every time a warm welcome, the restaurant looks nothing from the outside, The food is delicious, pasta and steaks etc.Steak Diane is my favourite there.

Hubby and I went for dinner on Saturday night, they atmosphere was great, the food was excellent and the staff were friendly and efficient, we will be back soon x

This place is always good food even though the steaks are not massive. The pizza and pasta is excellent and the staff make you feel very welcome. They even dig out the karaoke machine for you if you have a big enough party!

We had high hopes for this placed based on the reviews we read, however the truth is; it is a dated restaurant where the food is far below par, the ribs are just bones, soup with tortellini is so salty it is inedible, pizza was tasteless and to crispy to cut with the sharpest knife. Service was ok, however the owner was enjoying a good bottle or 2 while serving. Won't be returning.. Ever

As everyone has written previously, the service and food was wonderful. Your welcome is most gracious. Once you have selected your choices, the food arrives very promptly and you are left to enjoy your meal and are not rushed to select a sweet. The Tiramasu was simply divine as was the Pizza, but it was traditional Tiramasu. Thank you and I hope to return

Arrived at 8.30pm on a Saturday for a booking we had made. Were greeted pleasantly & shown to our seats. The food was simply delicious, i started with calamari fritti which arrived in a reasonable amount of time & a suitable amount for a starter. I had the Bistecca Boscaiola for the main, cooked medium rare. Absolutely perfect, a quality steak. Very happy with the level of service & not to expensive. (Came to about £27 a head including a couple of drinks each) Loved it! Will definitely be going again!

I can't say enough about how much we love Mario & Giannis- we have been coming here for years and I can't believe I've not reviewed it before now.Firstly the food is amazing - we tend to come on a Friday or Saturday night , usually to celebrate a birthday with friends, but they do an early bird offer throughout the week for £9.95 (from 5.30) you get two courses and coffee.They are always very accommodating and friendly, and we tend to come for celebrations as they do karaoke until the early hours (we have been in there until 3am a couple of times some years ago but usually til 12.30 - 1am - they need their beauty sleep) Even when there has just been the four of us dining they are more than happy to crank up the karaoke for us and it's almost like having your own private party in which they also join in !.Chef Gianni will come out from the kitchen and satisfy his need to be a rockstar as he plays drums on various implements in his little space under the stairs whilst he ops the karaoke, and he also likes to duet on the rock tunes.We have never had a bad night out here and we've been coming for 15 of the probably 30 years that they have been running. Highly recommended

This is a rather dated 1980's decorated Bistro and I simply love it. The place does really good quality cheap Italian food. It is very basic inside but the staff are attentive. Service is quick prices very reasonable.There are few bad reviews on here well all I can say is stay away so I can always get a table.I have tried virtually every pasta dish on the menu they are all great especially the Lasagne. The aubergine starter is superb. If you want a modern trendy italian this is not the place for you. Tuesday to thursday early bird special £ 9.95 any starter and a pasta dish with a coffee. Great value.Been to numerous places in the Northwest but always come back here. The only thing I would change would be to get some new knifes and forks the old ones are a little shabby.The fish special is always good.

When arrived the restaurant was busy and lively, however we were taken upstairs where it was cold with no atmosphere. It took 45 mins for the garlic bread to arrive, it felt like the staff had forgotten they had paying customers upstairs also!! Eventually main meal arrived,which was bland and tasteless. Very disappointed considering the 4 1/2 star rating, would not recommend.

We have been going to Mario and Gianni's for years now and it is fantastic. We went for the New Years Eve Gala Meal and celebrations. The meal was 7 courses and absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced. The atmosphere was brilliant and we had a super evening.Normally we go mid-week for meals - he does an excellent early doors - £9.99 for 2 courses early doors and another 3 courses which are great value.Really authentic italian food - only small restaurant - but I think the best in South Manchester !Try the Ribs for the starts - wonderful.

This is a brilliant little restauraunt. Mario is vey friendly and welcoming. Really good night there recently for our christmas works party, food beautiful and piping hot which is unheard of when there is a few of you! We go every time we have something to celebrate as we know we are garanteed a brilliant night, good food, good wine, friendly atmosphere and value for money.

We had a meal here recently and I am afraid the food was very poor tasteless and bland spring to mind the restaraunt itself was freezing inside such a shame used to be a good place .

Me and my boyfriend decided to visit for a meal, it is a nice little restaurant, set out well and decorated nicely. We both had a 3 course meal and were impressed by how nice the food was, each course was lovely! As opposed to other places on a Saturday, the service was fast and friendly!I will definitely be back!!

We went there on a spur of the moment and wow was we happy we did. Food was exceptional , the owner served us recommended as starter of rice peas in mozzarella and fried with salad was wonderful, we then had cannelloni I had the spinach option my wife the meet, and again one of the best I have had, asked for the bill and was offered free liqueur or coffee on the house, we play agame of guess the bill and both guessed 36/38 pound only to be told 32, this included a drink each and garlic bread. Defoe try this place!!! Food was amazing

We hadn't been here for years but noticing it was still open decided to visit . We were not disappointed , food very good value on the "early doors" special , service excellent with just enough banter from the staff to make you feel welcome and included, but it wasn't intrusive. The place had enough people in to give a bit of atmosphere not like some who have early doors and there's no-one there.

I've been to Mario and Gianni's a number of times and each time have enjoyed the food. Looks rather small outside but you get a warm welcome , good service and tasty food as well.

We visited Mario and Giannis one night after work and took advantage of their 2 courses for £9.95. We were given a cute table at the back, and the service we received was excellent. My partner ordered the ribs to start, and I opted for the mozzarella. The ribs were SO tasty, I kept stealing little bits of bread to dip in the pool of sauce - they came which a generous kick of spice! The mozzarella was a very generous portion too which makes a change in most restaurants.For mains he went for a four seasons pizza and I picked spaghetti puttanesca. Both were enjoyable and I was able to ask for more Parmesan cheese - I think the owner came out to see how things were and he was encouraging the waiter to put more cheese on my pasta. Bonus points!We had a nice evening - bottle of wine and Italian cuisine with warm hospitality. Would definitely go back.

I love it here and spend all my special occasions here simply due to the fact Mario makes a huge effort no matter how full his restaurant is. Even if every single table is completely taken, Mario will always take out ten minutes of his time to have a conversation with you. The food is amazing! A tip - go in the week and order before 7:30 and have the starter and main course for £10. Absolutely great value. No matter what you want to order, especially for someone picky like me - Mario is more than happy to mess things around just as you want them. Try the Calzone - my favourite however the rest of the food is always fantastic as well! Other than Mario the staff are absolutely lovely. Gianni works in the kitchen and always comes over on his way out to say hello. Also there is a young waitress and waiter who will also go out of their way and very friendly. A very family feel to this restaurant which makes it an even nicer atmosphere. Try going on a Saturday night and staying for karaoke... Mario makes it incredibly fun. All in all this is my absolute favourite in Hazel Grove and I would recommend to everybody. Mario - 'ben fatto' this place is incredible.

My partner and I have ate here sereral times, the food is always top notch. The staff are friendly and really add to the italian atmosphere. As been said previously it doesnt look much from the outside but don't let that put you off!P.S the steak is to die for and always cooked to perfection

We go here a lot. The staff are lovely and are great with kids: not many restaurant owners would chat to a 5 year old about random 5 year old things even when the place is heaving, but Mario has the knack of making everyone feel welcome. The food is always a high standard and while the menu hasn't changed in years there is always a specials board. We've been for Christmas, anniversaries, birthdays, family evenings out and for takeaways and the excellent service and high quality food is always very consistent.

We have been here numerous times. Every time the food is very authentic and the proprietor is on good form.this place is worth a go and I doubt you will be disappointed.

the best Italian restaurant I have ever eaten in. Not much to look at from the outside but the food, authentic atmosphere and friendly staff more then make up for it. Lots of special offers, early bird or set menus available to suit every budget, a choice of fresh fish available every day. We have recommended Mario and Giannis to all our friends, none of whom have been disappointed. Well worth a try.
