Great welcome with the staff dressed up in pirate wear and found a table easily. Quick service and order, and drinks were brought quickly. Piece de resistance were the fish and chips - amazing batter and fresh not oily with some lovely tartare sauce. Would recommend highly.

Very poor vegetarian breakfast, and very expensive for what I had. They claim to have veggie sausages but it was mashed potato made to look like a sausage. The fried eggs were so hard and the whites rubbery, it was as if they had fried a whole batch and then left them under the light. The only thing that was good was the mushrooms. I paid £9.95 for that and the quality was very poor. It probably cost them about £1.50 to make. It cannot be price the same amount as the meat version. So disappointed. My husbands meat version wasn’t much better, very cheap produce for the price.

This was the best fish and chips I have ever eaten, I felt had to return and make my appreciation known. I feel qualified to comment at 75 years old and having sampled fish and chips through out the UK

Having been before, as a local, I usually frequent the takeaway. This time I had a guest, so we went into the cafe. The first thing that astounded me, was they had a member of staff with long painted nails, not that it bothers me, but they were obviously stuck on and inappropriate for cafe work due to hygiene, now this only matters as I noticed them because I saw what she had done next. When we took to our table, there wasn't many that were clean, and we wanted to sit by the window, and so we had to ask after sitting there for a while for them to clean it. Cleaning meant her taking away the dirty plates. I had hoped she would wipe the table, as she then proceeded to place our cutlery down on the table; thankfully in a bit that wasn't dirty. There was a missing knife, so I asked her for one. She picked one up by the blade with her fingers from an adjacent table and plonked it in front of me. Her fingers had been all over it. I said nothing but cleaned it off with a little vinegar and napkin. I don't like making a fuss, so nothing was said. She then went to make a fuss and rough pat a dog with both hands and her nails in the dog’s fur. She then went to handle other cutlery in much the same way. At this point, I was wondering if my guest would leave but he hadn't noticed. She'd handled a dog then not washed her hands before touching other people’s cutlery. We ordered our food, and we were starving. My partner ordered Sausage, Chips and Beans, as he'd wanted the breakfast and we'd gone in at 2 mins past 12. We did ask if they would do us the breakfast, but they stopped at 12. I get this, but a little leeway wouldn't have gone amiss. However, I understand my own son has a restaurant, but even he is a bit flexible. I ordered a fish platter. I have a huge liking for the 'odd kind of fish' others often don't like, like whitebait, calamari, squid and prawns and other shellfish like that This platter was 'right up my street' so to speak and I was extremely looking forward to it. When it came, the chips were a little crispy, and I tried two less crispy ones, nice enough, however, the basket of fish, I put on my plate and just looked disappointedly. They looked very brown. I ate two crisp whitebait and tried the calamari. Now Calamari, is rubbery at the best of times and a lot of folks don't like that. I love it. THAT is what Calamari is, and I don’t understand why people don’t get the texture of these unusual fish meals. When I bit into it though, all you had was the hard crisp of the batter, which was over cooked, and almost non-existent Calamari, it was so hard, it was like wood. I broke another piece in half, now you should NOT be able to do that with Calamari! I tried a bit more, and it was much the same, I then tried a prawn, or shrimp, I wasn’t sure, and again it was as though the inside was burn from the inside out. Very disappointedly, I had to apologised to a waitress and said, “Look I'm very sorry, but I can't eat this, it's over done”. I apologised a couple of times because I felt like I was insulting them, and just said I can't eat it. So, I sent an almost untouched plate back. She said, “That's ok, do you want a refund?” I said, “Well we haven't actually paid yet!” As we were sitting in a cafe, you generally pay at the end after our meal, right? She said, “Oh Ok, Well, just don’t pay for this, it’s fine”. I said, “I did think of having something else actually if that was, ok?” I was hungry, and did need to eat. She said it was, but I looked to my partner, who'd ate most of his meal, and I thought it's not worth making him wait (we were going on the Dolphin boat) and we didn't want to be late anyhow. So, I said, “Oh ok, look no I don’t have time, I’ll just not pay as you said”. “I won’t order again thanks if you don’t mind?” Moments later, my guest paid for his meal, and my coffee and I went to the toilet. I was just about to go out, and the girl with the nails said, "You still have to pay for your meal!". She was very abrupt. I said “What? I sent it back, it was overdone!” She said “No, you still have to pay!” I asked why I had to pay if I’d sent it back, uneaten and told not to pay and it was all right? The waitress had accepted it was overcooked and told me not to pay! Then other staff who'd I’d never even spoken to, joined in, and said “Yes but you have to pay!” I was totally flabbergasted; and it shocked me. So, I shook myself mentally, and again I said more slowly, “No, it was burnt, I was asked if I wanted a replacement, and I declined”. They repeated that I had to pay and I said, “Sorry but no! I’m not paying for a burnt meal” Then they all started saying how rude I was for not paying for my food! One who may have been the manageress as she was much older, said she'd sent a photo to the owner and she said there was nothing wrong with it, and the cook said there was nothing wrong with it, and they thought there was nothing wrong with it. I was literally being barraged by four staff saying how there was nothing wrong with it, and I was the only one to have tried to eat it! They were calling me name as I left the building and one shouts out "Don't come back!" you're not welcome. Now forgive me, but, if you have a plate of food, and it's not right, you do send it back right? You don't expect the abuse you get from the staff ganging up on you because your food is so bad you refuse to pay for it, even if you had been told NOT to pay for it by a member of staff! I don't suppose they realised I was a local, nor do they realise I'm not some holiday maker going in for a one in a year meal from them. IF they thought I was a holiday maker, I feel sorry for holiday makers there! I'm very local and I am astounded at the behaviour. You may say, well I'm some kind of Karen not wanting to pay, you can, but ask yourself this question, would you pay if your meal was so bad you couldn't even recognise the existence of the fish? I won't be going back, and they ARE going to lose the trade from my business when I take people for a "quick fish and chip supper" when they visit it. I hope the owner reads this and realises they need to listen to customers. I would NOT have sent a whole plate back, which contained food that I absolutely love if it wasn't so bad! Not when I was looking forward to eating it. Would you? I can only assume this lot may be this year’s seasonal staff, they were not like that last year when I brought my guests down, so I hope it's not going to be like that next year, but when you have The Captain's Fish and Chip Shop and other good places to eat in Newquay then, I shan't be going there again on principle. I recommend you do not. Give it a miss this year, and with luck they will have better staff next year. God help you if you complain Oh and Mariners? Please get your staff to not pet dogs and then not wash their hands. It's just dirty.

Great find on my touring trip of Wales, friendly staff (Liza, Lana and Karla) beautiful fish and chips, lovely atmosphere and dog friendly in the restaurant. Very reasonably priced too.

Food was lovely and tasty ,My husband had a ploughman's if he could have got away with licking the plate he would have . Dog friendly . Staff couldn't do enough for you.

Lovely dog friendly cafe. Popped in for a quick bite of lunch. The staff were very friendly and service quick. Treats and a bowl of water for our dog came before our drinks😁 We had a bowl of Cawl with bread and cheese, it was lovely A table near us had the fish and chip and the portions were huge and looked fab If we’re in the area again would definitely visit again

We were there today with our 4 yr old girl. Fish and chips was very tatsy . Staff are all amazing especially with my daughter. She was scribbling on a tissue paper and one of the staff saw it and got her a Writing / doodle tablet. I didn't get name of Particular staff who was so kind to my girl , She came and sat near her and was chatting with her . ( Have been to many parts of UK but have never seen anyone being this kind ) While we were leaving my girl was crying as she wanted the writing tablet and they just gave it to her - Thank you so much for being so kind . It really made our day she hasn't kept that doodle thing even for a second 😂 Thank you for everything @ all staff - Mariners.

Fantastic Fish n Chips for dinner and so much of it. Also lovely breakfast baguette. Such a lovely warm and very friendly place with great staff. Great prices too. Deserves 10 stars at least.

What a great place this café is! This is a dog friendly, & what a wonderful welcome we received from Karina & her colleague. Our dog Bella was spoilt with water & biscuits. The service was excellent & friendly. Our cod & chips were first rate, the fish being light & the batter crisp. Full marks! We used to have our own coffee shop, and we would have been proud to have had the staff at this café. We will certainly be back when we are in Newquay next.

My review is for the takeaway part, not the cafe. 4 cod and chips, 2battered sausage and chips and 3 battered sausages on their own, best part of £50 and most if it was inedible and ended up being thrown out for the birds. Chips were over cooked and dark brown in colour and the batter was bitty and crumbly instead of crispy, it all tasted awful. We’ve been here loads of times but this is by far the worst fish and chips we’ve ever had!

What a gem of a cafe. Super fish and chips on a wet and windy October day. Dogs welcome. Staff very friendly. The fish was very fresh and the chips made with Pembrokeshire potatoes. We look forward to a return visit next season

This is such a lovely Cafe and lunch spot in New Quay. We had the Yorkshire pudding roast wraps with gravy and cauliflower cheese, which were absolutely amazing. Really impressed with the service, couldn’t recommend enough, will definitely be back soon.

Visited on Tuesday 4th May. Absolutely delicious fish and chips and it’s great to see chips being cooked so they are crispy not dripping in grease and soggy. The batter on the fish was nice and light. Small fish and chips cooked to order in 7 mins was well presented by pleasant staff and great value. Thoroughly recommended and will be returning for sure. First class.

Discovered this absolute gem this weekend and cannot recommend it highly enough. There was a fantastic selection of freshly made sandwiches, paninis and jacket potatoes made to order. As well, freshly made bread, cakes and pastries which all looked delicious. We opted for a tuna jacket potato which came with a huge fresh salad, a bbq chicken ciabatta and a ham baguette - all of which were so tasty and arrived in no time. The lovely lady behind the counter insisted we go and wait in the sunshine and bought our order out to us very quickly. We also ordered a bottle of wine to-go as they had a fantastic selection of wines on offer. The chap working there went to the trouble of grabbing us a couple of cups and some ice. He even substituted the bottle of wine we’d bough for a more expensive wine he’d recommended to us - for no extra charge. The wine was perfect! We enjoyed our lunch sat by the Harbourside and the fantastic food we had from Mariners topped off a perfect afternoon. If you are in New Quay this place is an absolute must to visit, not just for the fantastic and reasonable food on offer but also the lovely people who run this place and their wonderful customer service. We’ve just left New Quay... having had takeaway cod and chips from Mariners. Delicious. Best fish i’ve had in a long time. The fish literally fell apart inside the batter. The customer service from the boy serving us today was second to none. Will definitely eat from here again when visiting. Thank you xx

We started here with a take away meal as wed eaten here on manynoccasions on previous visits to New quay. We were over charged and the food wasn't good,On thinking it was a one off as wednever had bad be for we gave them a second chancein the restaurant. Really wished we hadn't. After 2 times of the girl coming back to us as the food wasn't available my wife gave up and I ate with my children, it took nearly 1/2 hour for the food to arrive (there was only 1 other couple In there so not busy), oh my goodness! The childrens cod and chips was a pile of mush in sloppy batter, the burger was burnt and black and the ham egg and chips was so fatty it shouldnt have been served up. Awful. When the plates were taken it was said about the food, sorry was the response!!!!! Nothing was done about it, the boss (I assume) stood behind the counter laughing it was just a joke, please please save yourself the time and money. We always ate here I'm sure its been taken over its awful now. Never again a visit by us. Much better around

The Mariners Cafe is in the perfect location - right by the coast of New Quay. I ordered the chicken and chips as a takeaway for dinner and it was so delicious! The chips were nice and chunky and fresh. Chicken was cooked great and tasted very good - it wasn't greasy or taste 'fishy'. Service was very good also. Really enjoyed the food, would highly recommend to anyone visiting New Quay.

Good sized meaty fish portion chips were well cooked and not to greasy reasonably priced would use again

Chips are ok but nothing special. The fish unfortunately arrived in a rock hard, greasy coating of batter, so thick it was runny underneath - I removed all the batter to discover a really decent quality piece of fish that was overcooked but would have been delicious with better cooking and a MUCH thinner batter. Peas were ok.

Went in for breakfast staff were friendly enough but then spent ages playing on their phones. Veggie breakfast was ok sausages were leek and potato based I think, had a cheesy taste to them. My partners bacon was really fatty. It was decent enough but wouldn’t return.

We were in the Newquay area for a few days and for weeks before my husband had been going on about having fish and chips in Newquay as we did 25 years ago!! We didn't know what would be open in Wales as in the current situation crossing into Wales from England is really like going to a foreign land where you don't know the rules.Anyway we found our wonderful fish and chips, hot , crispy and large at the takeaway from the Mariners Cafe where there was no fuss but rules were being followed and eat them onthe beach. Lovely, perhaps we can eat inside when we return hopefully not in another 25 years.

Had a fantastic fish & chip lunch with the family, food quality was excellent, portion size was large, best fish & chips I've had in a long time. Staff were very helpful & got us a table asap to avoid covid queing. Even had the time to give a bit of local information, if you're visiting New Quay this is the place for lunch!

Popped in just as the rain started so had to queue due to COVID restrictions. Tables, chairs and condiments throughly cleaned between customers. Wonderfully friendly owner who went out of his way to make sure we were happy. Nice food, great sized portions and lovely atmosphere, would certainly visit here again.

Myself and my partner were looking for somewhere cheap and cheerful, clean and just all round proper fish and chips by the sea. They serve the most beautiful food here, so we'll presented, fast and also tasty! The place itself was kept clean and each table was cleaned before we sat down. The queue was quite long when we got there but there wasn't a long wait at all. The staff are so friendly and check you're okay and your food is okay. And a bonus to it all was that we had the nicest view!!

Visited Saturday night for take away Fish and Chips. Have to say it was probably the best F&C I've ever had. Spot on size for a large portion, just right. Fish tasted great with perfect batter and the chips were out of this world. Very friendly staff only had to wait a few minutes as it was freshly cooked. Social distancing measures all very straightforward and efficient. Would certainly recommend this place 100% and will definitely go again when I next visit New Quay.

On holiday with my wife in New Quay, felt a little bit pekish and we decided on having chips to "fill the hole" so to speak the chips were freshly cooked to order and they were great. Hot and crispy, not an oily aftertaste at all. Crispy scraps included was a massive, tasty bonus (for those who know what scraps are ) We're still in New Quay as I'm writing this review, so expect another review later.

On a recent vIsit to New Quay, it's been a few years since last visiting, we fancied Fish & Chips to eat by the harbour. Both the fish and chips were cooked fresh to order and were beautIful! Lovely fresh, white fish and tasty chips. Much rather have waited as we did for the food to be cooked than end up with some crap! Highly recommended.

Me and my husband attended for sunday lunch this afternoon, the food was lovely and perfect speedy service for a seaside town, absolutely nothing wrong with the restaurant. The only issue was the staff, we were served by 3 lovely young ladies who did everything possible to accommodate our need, you could tell they enjoyed working together and enjoyed chatting not only with each other but other customers also which was refreshing to see in a busy cafe. The other staff on the other hand, while ordering ice cream for our desert i was served by one young lady while the others cleaned and served others a large man who im guessing was the chef (considering he had tattoos on his hands and probably not the best hygiene he should not be near food) interrupted the lovely lady insisting she take orders out while he did the till, he was very rude about this but well done to the girl for keeping her cool and listening to his orders. After finishing my order on the till he didnt even bother to complete my order making the girl do his job as well as her own! I am not someone to write a review usually but the way this man treated this poor girl really made me angry! As a mother of 2 daughters i would never let my children work anywhere near this disgusting man!

Food was cheap and cheerful, portion sizes were very good, and we will visit again.

Visited for the umpteenth time on a wet windy February day, so not surprised to find it half-empty (I thought I had reviewed before, maybe not). Pleased to see they have introduced some portion control so now there is a manageable sized meal on offer. From the last time we visited we remember huge portions where we were barely able to stagger away we had so much to eat (they were sending profit out of the door). Each of us had 'Small' (looked huge to us) cod, chips, mushy peas, bread and butter with pot of tea/coffee for less than £7. Freshly cooked, hot, quickly and pleasantly served, so what is not to like?. This plaice gets some very mixed reviews so probably needs to be more consistent (or catch less picky customers).

We go to Wales every January and enjoy the scenery. We always like newquay and look forward to our fish and chips. The stuff they serve at the mariners was disgusting, the place needs a good clean, cod not to bad, batter thick and soggy, chips were not fresh cut but frozen. Avoid at all costs

Visited today and ordered food. The staff look miserable and dont smile food was cold and nobody came over to check if everything was ok. This place is as bad as the penwig or should I say the food would probably have been at least luke warm up there ! Wont be returning.

What a total disappointment! Just purchased a large Cod and chips, batter was under cooked and so was part of the fish.The batter was thick and soft on the inside, it was like flour mixed with water, it was not cooked. The fish was tepid in parts and uncooked in other parts of the fish. This was the worst cooked fish I have ever had!!! I do not know what has happened to the fish, but the person that fried it, needs to be re-assessed on his battering and cooking techniques. Purchased from their adjoining chip shop, which is part of the cafe.£6.75 for under cooked batter and cold/raw fish.

Having been to The Captains Rendezvous earlier in the week and found bones in the fish, was hoping for some boneless fish here. Unfortunately several bones were in the small fish, and the chips were terrible and tasteless. They must be frozen!?In future will be going to Budgies up the road and eat in for some decent fish and chips, or wait till the Lime Crab opens after Winter.

Food was good, staff very nice we had a good laugh with them,we were on holiday for a week, we went in everyday for meals.

Called in here as I was staying a few miles outside town and was heading to Lime Crab because of the reviews. That place was not open even though online they said they were! So I found mariner's by accident - what a lucky find. A queue when I arrived and this is because they cook everything to order. Nothing left sitting around going soggy. Staff were friendly and welcoming.Large cod and chips and mushy peas and it was served in a cardboard packaging - they are working on reducing plastics which is great news - and it was still good and hot when I got it back to my accommodation. I was tempted to sit on the sea wall and munch away but opted for comfort.Definitely recommend this place and as for prices they are not bad! The person complaining about chips being £2.55 needs to look around a bit and see what the average price is these days. Likewise tomato sauce (they had large sachets when I was there) and they are also average price.A large menu to choose from even though I stuck to good old fish and chips.Nothing to complain about.

Called in for lunch,restaraumt far from full,ordered 3 fish and chips and coffees.Coffees arrived but the meals took so long to arrive we'd finnished them.There were 5 or 6 staff standing around chatting and checking their phones but still took 25 minutes for it to arrive.Having seen the plates sitting under a warmer for 15 minutes with salad on them I kinda lost my appetite.Meal was average and overpriced.

I only dropped in as I was passing and very hungry. Chip scraps and slow service. Lack of condiments. Expensive, I won't be returning.

Staff are very friendly and helpful service was good bacon was very good, but did not enjoy the rest of the breakfast, coffee good

Been here twice this week, Fish Chips and Curry sauce/pushy peas, Beautiful, very good polite service in an excellent location. Well worth calling in if you don't fancy cooking.

Myself partner & grandson all had different meals & we all enjoyed them very much.Portions were very ample.

What a fantastic cafe, the food is fresh and home cooked the steak pie is stunning and so reasonable. Lovely friendly staff couldn't ask for more.

Review of attached takeaway. We had some lovely hot steaming chips but at £2.55 a portion they were daylight robbery! Apparently 30p for a sachet of ketchup.

Bought chicken nuggets chips x3 plus fish and chips x2 the fish was lovely but the rest went straight in the bin the chicken nuggets were rock hard and the chips were horrible , had to end up cooking for kids no impressed at all

The diner is very clean and has a very friendly welcome. The staff are very accommodating and the service was quick. The food is cooked to perfection and to a very high standard. We all really enjoyed our meals and left with full and happy bellies.

Visited twice. Once for bee and once for dinner. Both visits were just fantastic.

Stopped here for a portion of chips, the large portion was only around 30p more than the medium but was absolutely huge!! They were the best chips we’ve ever had, we are back next week and will be having our lunch here...

It wasn’t busy there 1 person waiting when I placed my order for takeaway fish and chips and I appreciate they were cooked fresh but come on over half an hour to wait ,4 people serving and larking about then one of days after half an hour oh have you placed an order! I would hate to think what they are like when it’s busy .the food wasn’t even that great fish was ok but chips were undercooked and had a funny taste and they gave me 1 mushy peas though I ordered 2

Lovely clean place.good menu with good choice.well priced.childrens menu available.some meal deals like fish chips bread and butter tea or coffee £6.95. Served well and well presented.had sunday dinners on sunday it was beef.lots of meat and veg.well worth it.will return.

Best fish and chips we have had in a long time. The fish was thick and plentiful and the batter light and crisp. The chips freshly cooked and decent size not scrag end bits. Not the fastest of service but well worth the wait. Staff very friendly. Sat on the side of the beach in the sunshine with fantastic view and really enjoyed
