Marie's Chippy in Halton

This is the best chippy for miles around not just Widnes, freshly cooked food that’s not been sat around for hours, you have to get there early or you will have to stand in a queue but it’s definitely worth waiting for. We dream of this place when coming home off holiday

I remember when a large mixture with curry, 3 fritters and batter bits was 13 and a half pence in 1973.....great chippy....hasnt changed.

The staff were welcoming, displaying friendly attitudes and broad smiles despite being busy. Initially, the scene was promising, with a bustling atmosphere inside and out, where numerous vehicles, including tradespeople, were parked with some occupants dining in their cabs. However, my experience declined from that point. Upon ordering, I noticed a lone fish at one end of the range. I could have requested a freshly battered fish, but I chose not to order a new one, considering another customer might end up with it anyway. The interior of the chippy appeared tired. When my meal arrived, the portions and quality were disappointing. The "large" fish was smaller than expected, the battered burger and sausage were overly greasy, and the chips were thin and soggy. The curry and gravy had an odd, unpleasant taste, although the peas were acceptable. The fish was the biggest letdown due to its size and greasy batter. Overall: Despite high hopes for this highly recommended chip shop, my experience was unsatisfactory, leading me to leave most of my meal uneaten. Beautiful fish and chips and mushy peas like nan made excellent and price was really good 👍 friendly staff and it was really busy

Best chippy ever!!! On busy days it feels like getting into berghain with queues going round the bend and down the road, except not everyone is wearing black and there’s no fella with a tattoo on his face knocking people back on the front door. People take pilgrimages from the far distant lands just to get the crispy goodness of fish and chips, let me tell you this is the Mecca of chippies. You’ll probably need to fast as well before you go because the portion sizes are enough to fill 2 sumo wrestlers on roller blades. This chippy deserves to be a UNESCO World heritage site for its contribution to culture and food. If the interior hasn’t changed for that long either I don’t see why not! So if you want very good fish and chips, from the Mecca of fish and chips with a vibe of Berghain and the status of a unesco world heritage site, then I definitely recommend this Chippie

Great chippy. I made a detour after reading other reviews so thank you all. Having lived in the south now for a long time I have occasional cravings for proper chips, peas and gravy which can only be bought in a chippy in the NW. Marie’s was exactly what I craved and the meat and potato pie was the bonus. Thanks ladies.

55, Widnes born and bred and never been here until today! I have no excuse, and I have a lot of years to make up for! I had the mixture, (chips and peas) which was always my favourite chippy tea growing up, and I didn’t want it to end when I was eating. It took me back to how chippies used to be before the burgers, kebabs, Chinese etc turned them into a hybrid. A good traditional English chippy, doing what they do best.

Only get to visit once or twice a year now as I live in a different area, but everything you have read is true!

I lived within 100 yards of Marie's up till I moved from Widnes at 30. I remember fighting my siblings for the biggest plate to take round for them to plate up you tea on. I remember legging it down from Fairfield High School to get to the front of the queue before the Wad and St Joe's got there. When ever we visit family I always take Friday afternoons off so I am sure that we make it down for a large mixture and curry. Simply the best chippy in Widnes (even though Lacey St chippy was a close second) and beats anywhere in West Cumbria. Good job we moved otherwise I'd rolling round everywhere.

I’d often heard about the chips from Marie’s Chippy being the best in Widnes, but just took it with a pinch of salt (‘scuse the pun !! ) Just before Christmas my work colleagues and I were stuck for a lunch idea, we work just a few strides from the chippy and decided to give it a try. Wow !! These are definitely THE best chips I’ve ever tasted !! (A close second are the chips from the chippy in Llanfair in Anglesey) Not only was the place spotlessly clean, but the staff were friendly and welcoming. I don’t know what you cook your chips in Marie - but keep it up and “well done” and “thanks” !!

Good English chip shop, rare these days. Good size meals, nice staff not expensive. Pies, curry, gravy etc. The shop is very clean, got good ratings for cleanliness.

Been going to Marie's chippy since 1980. They use to make big trays of home made steak pie, it was amazing. Its the best chippy in widnes!.

I'v ate here many times, a true british chippy, no pizza, no kebabs, just high quality chips and fish, mushy peas, gravy curry and a couple of pies. Then best place, my only criticism is it has short opening times, so chop chop and visit here soon

We live in Runcorn but when we want Fish and Chips there's no other Chippie can match Marie's. You always have to queue which shows that it is very popular. The Fish is cooked to order the batter is always crispy and the Fish is white and delicious, the Chips are always fresh and the Mushy Peas are lovely. It's worth travelling over the Bridge to Widnes to go here. I would certainly recommend this place.

I've been going here since a little boy. I'm now 40. Don't live in Widnes anymore but when I'm in town. A visit is a must. Someone put the gravy had a horrible taste. Best chips peas and gravy I've ever had. I'm hungry now lol.

There is nothing bad to say about this chippy. I've been going good here for years.You get great traditional fish and chips plus it is very reasonably priced compared to most other chippies.If you're brave enough or hungry enough go for a large fish with a large mixture but be aware it's big!The average appetite will be more suited to a small fish with a medium mixture (chips and peas for the uneducated lol) and the gravy and curry are also spot on if you want either.

What a lovely chippy great food and very generous portions ordered a fish and it was massive could have feed two of us. Very friendly staff definitely recommend will be back soon

If you want a more traditional fish and chips then this is the place to go. Queues are likely but food is good. The only downfall is that it is not open for very long.

This chippy is like nothing else anywhere currently available without a time machine. A chippy as chippies used to be good grub fish are superb. Opening hours are very limited but always a queue down the street and will more often than not sell out of their excellent fresh fish.

The prices have increased and the portions have decreased. Fish is not as nice as it was. I'm wondering if it has been sold.

Best English chippy in Widnes by far, good value for money portions are massive!, polite staff, nothing beats this chippy, real original old style English food and the sausages have a taste not found anywhere else! absolutely delicious! Highly recommended! They will cook anything asked on the menu on demand can't fault them.One drawback is the limited opening hours but hey, something this tasty is worth the wait!

I have been going to this chippy for over 40 years known locally as Marie Barries. This is really one of the best known chippy in Widnes. The quality has not changed in all this time fish used is lovely always freshly cooked crispy batter chips perfectly cooked, delicious gravy. Children from Fairfield including my son used it throughout his senior school & loves when he comes back home has a "marie barries."

Love this chippy, fab food and lovely staff. Just wish it had longer opening hours in the evening, I think it closes at 6pm. They serve the best fish and chips in Widnes and most likely in Cheshire. It's that good the que for food can be right down the street.

I buy Marie's fish every Tuesday. They're lovely fish and the price is good. Always hot, always fresh, always a smiley face serving me. Worth a visit to this little takeaway.

Probably the best known Chippy in town. Was not disappointed. Reasonably priced especially with the large servings. Gets very busy 5:00pm onwards on a Friday. Well worth another visit.

Turn the corner at the hair salon (if you're lucky that you are not already queuing round that corner) and enter the best place around for fresh fish with a moreish curry or gravy a vital cover for a small (L), medium (XL) or large (XXL) portion of trips that will send you asleep on the couch within the hour (which is why I usually get mine after work, rather than for lunch). Mini tub of chips are even provided free of charge, for wee ones, while their parents large orders are processed.

They cook proper golden delicious chippy chips which I can not recommend highly enough. When I asked for a battered sausage they had none available immediately but offered to pop one in for me. Delighted as the batter was light crispy and fresh.The building itself doesn't look like its been revamped since the 50's, but this hardly matters as it adds to the nuance and quirkyness of Marie's chippy. The most important thing is that it is clean and tidy.

This is a fantastic little chippy that is well known in widnes. Not sure of current opening times but was only open some evenings. Best chips peas and gravy in town, nice pies and friendly staff. Always busy get in nice and early before the food runs out lol.

Having lived local all of my life I thought it was time to see what all the fuss was about. I wasn't disappointed. A quirky little chippy that I can only describe as someones front room that has been tiled top to bottom. The staff where really friendly and one lady in particular payed special attention to a little girl who is around the same age as my daughter which was lovely to see. It appears that there is only a basic menu offering combinations of chips with fish and sauces and the likes. This is great as you're not overawed by endless meal choices; it is what it is, and it is great! I highly recommend a large portion of chips with mushy pea's and curry on top not forgetting a splash of salt and vinegar.

Went here for my dinner the other day in work as I was told by friends it's really nice.i got chips gravy and peas the chips weren't the best and the gravy was horrible as it left a horrible taste in my mouth. Staff are nice and food is cheap but I can honestly say I won't be back

Having heard a lot about Maries Chippy, i thought i was never going to get to sample the food, or service, for myself due to the short opening hours of an evening, and my having to work. Yesterday I was fortunate to have a day off, so a chippy tea was an option. After eventually finding somewhere to park, i joined the queue outside the shop - complete with someone in a 'onesie'! I did wonder what I was doing as I've never queued outside a chip shop before, and certainly not near someone in a onesie! However, despite initial impressions, the fish and chips were the best I have had in a long time. The service was good and prices reasonable.

Heard a lot about this chippy, don't know what all the fuss is about. Just the same as any other chippy, not fantastic, not brilliant, just average, won't go out my way to go there.

31 years I've lived here and 31 years I've heard people bang on about 'Marry Barras'.. Best chippy blah blah blah.... 31 years it's taken me to go..... It's the best fish and cups I've had in a very very long time. Mushy peas are lush. Need to go back and try the infamous curry sauce next. The staff are proper nice friendly folk.

Marie barrows is a Widnes institution!!Having moved back to Widnes after 10 years away and suffered appalling chippys, this was a breath of fresh air to once again have good old fashioned traditional chips served by always friendly staff and very reasonably priced!Would recommend to everybody!!!

I have visited Marie's chippy numerous times since my first visit last November, and it has to be noted that the high quality of the food never wavers, I will be visiting for years to come.

Living quite close I am lucky to be able to get my chippy lunch frequently from here. The fish and chips are super and they have smaller fish too.Very popular with everyone including workmen.
