Marco Pierre White's The Angel in Babergh

Requested a twin room but arrived to be shown into a double. Couldn't be changed until the following day apparently! Went down for breakfast on Saturday morning at about 8:30 (breakfast served from 8 - 10). No staff apart from the cleaner. She kindly tried to provide some tea, milk and cereals - and bread. So we made do without a cooked breakfast (included in the rate we paid). At about 9:10 a young lady appeared who offered us a cooked breakfast just as we were about to leave the restaurant. No apology. No kitchen staff. Just awful. I did get an apology from the General Manager later that day and Sunday morning breakfast was fine. Certainly won't use this hotel again.

I have stayed here before & the Angel retains its standards. The room/breakfast deal with really excellent and the accommodation likewise. I had six meals there & enjoyed every single one: very high standards of cuisine & friendly, helpful staff. I look forward to returning.

Had an overnight stay in Lavenham and decided to have dinner in the Angel. It was mid week so fairly quiet. Staff were pleasant enough when we arrived, We were seated in the restaurant chose our meals, waited over 30 mins and when they arrived they did apologise for the delay. During eating my meal (8 - 8.30pm) the staff started to set up tables and lay others for breakfast, this was my view during my meal, chatting and clattering of plates made us feel as though we were in the way and should not have been in the restaurant area. Was asked if we would like a desert but did not want to be there any longer. As we left did mention this to the barman who in turn replied sorry but the staff leave in 10mins !!!! Maybe in future they could try to seat people away from this area or maybe set for breakfast later.

Nice location with parking, centrally located which was nice as there are a lot of historic buildings to see. Room was clean and a decent size. It was overlooking the bins and we had to keep the windows closed as we could smell them. The building itself is old and has a lot of character. Breakfast was nice and well presented.

Excellent start to a busy day. Able to fill up before a wedding in the afternoon. Went for the combination continental/full English. Good value for money. Cheaper to go for this with unlimited drinks than the full English and drinks.

We are so spoilt now in this part of Suffolk with excellent pubs and restaurants. We hadn’t tried the Angel in years. What a super surprise to find Hayley as front of house, and also great food and service at short notice. Well done the Angel, first class food presented very well.

I booked a room for my wife's birthday. Phoned the hotel direct and booked super king room with breakfast On arriving we were shown to our room ( no 9) Not a good impression from the start the stair carpet leading to our room was filthy and the barman couldn't open the door because it's sticks apparently ! Carpets in room grubby too. It was not a super king as I had received my details for, it was shabby, not like the room advertised with a queen bed which I thought I was getting The room was poorly decorated with a very dated, tiny en suite with a maserator toilet which stank when you opened the bathroom door. This was a special occasion for us and I was very disappointed but didn't want to kick up a fuss as it was my wife's birthday. When leaving I mentioned it to the man being the bar ... No apologies or offer of any refund just said he would look into it and pass toilet issue onto cleaning staff. Very poor My stars are for most that work there who were very polite only bonus as far as I'm concerned. .

We thought the food was very good - one of had the rump steak and the other had the pea risotto. Both dishes exceeded our expectations. Although there were only a few other diners in, we had to wait a long time for our order to be taken and then for the food to arrive. We didn't mind the 12.5% service charge as that's what we would have left anyway as the service was good and the staff attentive and helpful. A bit much paying that on top of drinks from the bar though!

My husband and I like to have a night away once a month . This month, we chose The Angel . After a long morning at work, I was very excited to arrive and finally get to unwind . We followed directions to " the reception " , this was the main bar . The lady behind the bar was half way through serving some drinks , so we politely waited , as she turned and looked up at us , there was no welcoming smile , no acknowledgement that we were standing waiting to check in , just a glare , as much as to say , " who are you " ? " you're not a local " . She then proceeded to serve several other customers, who had come in after us , leaving us feeling unwelcome and awkward. Eventually, the lady just about managed to say " can I help?" I explained we were there to check in , she took us up to our room. She was aware we had booked a table for dinner , but we explained we hadn't entirely decided whether we were going to eat else where , we asked if there was a specials menu , it was bank holiday after all , but she literally pulled a face and spat back at us that it was Al a Carte only , and left the room . We had already looked at the menu prior to our arrival, and there wasn't anything we fancied , I thought it was a reasonable question , but seemed to annoy this front of house lady ! The room was clean , but the bed had blocks of wood holding one side up as the wheels were missing . The pillows had no protectors. The general decor is a bit tired . We decided to go yo the bar for a drink . Now two members of staff behind the bar , both clearly more interested in their locals . The younger girl who served us was rude when my husband asked about the ales and none of the staff seem to know how to smile . We cancelled our dinner reservation and headed off to the local Indian, with fantastic food and service . We headed back to The Angel at around 8pm , the pub was very busy, we didn't feel welcome so went straight to our room . Neither of us slept well , matress extremely hard . We headed down to breakfast, a lovely young girl served us . We waited a good half an hour for our cooked breakfast but was very good when it arrived . After packing we headed downstairs , went yo approach the bar to check out but the housekeeper offered to take our keys . No have a nice day , thank you , goodbye , nothing . Later in the day , despite having my husbands card details , they chased us for payment ! If we'd had an opportunity to go to a proper reception to check out , this wouldn't have been necessary. If you like to have the customer service you are paying for and deserve, then avoid this pub !!

Avoid eating here. We ordered 4 meals. Only 3 arrived, but we were tod the 4th was 'on its way'. After 5 minutes we asked about the meal, someone went to the kitchen and told us it was ' almost ready'. People who arrived after us were served their food. After another 10 minutes we asked about the meal. A different person went to check and said it would be 'ready soon'. Eventually three of us had finished our meals. The 4th meal never arrived. The manager claimed a problem with the online ordering service. She said it had happened before. So the reassurances that the meal was being cooked were not true, and the manager is incapable of sorting a simple problem by talking to the chef. The food we did receive was mediocre. A family outing ruined. If you are visiting Lavenham, eat somewhere else.

We visited for the evening a la carte menu for a meal at a lower cost than at The Swan, where we were staying. Perfectly o.k. all round. I think that the 12.5% service charge should be mentioned on the menus displayed on the internet. £11 for a pint of Greene King IPA and a pint of Aspall cider at the bar made me cough a bit. Possibly a reflection of the Angel being a pub, hotel and restaurant without quite deciding which.

Wow wow wow, what a great Sunday Roast! Sentiments shared by all of the other tables around us too who also complimented the staff and Landlord on its quality! Its a lovely thriving village pub in the most prettiest of places, great staff who handled the massive Sunday rush with confidence and precision. The soup and Smoked Duck starter we both had (and shared a taste each) were amazing, then to the Roast Pork - wow! Moist meat, amazing Yorkshire and just the best ever gravy. A really lovely place and well worth its thriving customer base. Well done guys!

Amazing Sunday lunch. Best to book but staff are so accommodating if you just turn up, or ring just prior to your visit. If you like roast beef you will never find it cooked this way anywhere else locally. It is amazing, cut with a spoon and melt in the mouth. I always recommend The Angel for its roasts on Sunday. Had a recent refurb with tables and looks as lovely as ever. Always a warm welcome. Dog friendly in bar and outside. Couldn’t manage dessert after such a large roast

My friend and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights this week. Our rooms were comfortable with everything we needed and the food excellent. Breakfast was good, lots of choice and perfectly cooked. We had dinner there the first night and it was so good we booked for the next night. The menu was interesting and the food beautifully cooked and well presented. I loved the salmon with beetroot sauce. The staff were very welcoming and helpful and Daisy took great care of us. We loved Lavenham and would recommend the Angel.

Good food, helpful waitresses, and excellent location next to a medieval square. Lavenham was a charming little town.

Been to this hotel before. Revisited. The staff were not only multi tasked but customer friendly, polite and delivered excellent service throughout irrespective of task. Nothing too much bother!. Rooms very presentable and food all round very good. Special nights plus set menu so good choice.The steak night represented first rate value and servings. Excellent all round. Very small point: breakfast buffet could offer some fruit and pastries. A little limited. Excellent break.This is a lovely place with some great tea rooms and antique shops with great buys of all types. Aladdin’s caves! Great to be limited to hard working independent shops- multiple free. No Costa or McDonald!

Average at best, I live in a neighbouring village and this venue has been on my list for a while. Parking is always tricky if you don’t want to walk far, however parked today and walked a short walk to the pub. Staff were friendly and service was quick, the food wasn’t fabulous but it was acceptable. It’s definitely not a venue for a budget meal, not sure I agree with the added service charge ( I wasn’t asked it was just added) it seems a tad excessive for a couple of drinks and a light meal, it’s a pub not a restaurant, had we been in the restaurant I would expect to tip That said it’s a perfectly nice pub and now I’ve tried it I can confirm there’s better out there and unless you are stuck then give this place a miss.

Never disappoints and always my first choice for Sunday lunch in the village. Amazing roast beef and all the trimmings, warm friendly welcome as usual. Lots of new staff but service good. HIghly recomend trying this place for Sunday lunch or one of the themed nights. The nachos lunchtime are amazing - hand made and freshly cooked, more than enough for 2 people to share.

Stopping in the town on a summer break, and called in. The service was good and the food excellent. Great value for money…. not your normal pub grub, more gastro pub/restaurant fare. Would highly recommend

VISITED WITH FAMILY FROM AUSTRALIA EXPECTING A PLEASANT LUNCH. VERY DISAPPOINTED, SLOW SERVICE, MEDIOCRE MENU AND WERE TREATED TO FOUL LANGUAGE FROM THE KITCHEN WHICH COULD BE HEARD IN PART OF THE RESTAURANT. OTHER CUSTOMERS ALSO COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS. WE LIVE LOCALLY BUT WILL NOT BE RETURNING.

Good food, but avoid room 8 which has a large immersion heater in the wardrobe and makes an intermittent whooshing noice day and night. Manager has attitude.
