Beautiful family run hotel, the food was exquisite, beautifully presented and very tasty, the Robert was extremely tentative seeing we had brought a bottle of wine came along with a wine cooler, the attention to detail was second to none, he also gave us great advice on visiting a beautiful local church which was a must see , and only around 5 miles to visit Gretna Green and a few hundred yards from the English/Scottish Border we just can’t wait for a return visit Thank You for a memorable visit.

Lovey comforting food. Brilliant (and rightfully popular) strawberry tarts, with perfect, crunchy casing. Excellent pastry on the quiches, the perfect texture and flavour! Friendly staff and obviously popular with the locals AND tourists.

Their link sausage rolls are great. Soft fluffy morning roll and 3 sausages. Fills you up. Their quiche pies are also delicious with both meat and veggie options. But their speciality is the haggis, bean, and cheese pie. Very popular. Their chicken pie topped with crisps is also amazing.

Having heard some good things about this wee place, we decided to stop en-route home. How disappointing was it to find a thriving busy place, staffed by rude and angry seeming staff that clearly thought that customers were an inconvenience. Yes, it was their first day open after the new year holidays, Yes, it was busy, but whatever happened to customer service? Big disappointment.

We were visitors in Thornhill and just so loved this bakery - even bought loaves to take home at the end of our holiday. The staff were excellent and efficient. One step from five stars - please please consider paper bags for your packaging- NOT plastic!

Having had a cup of coffee at their branch in Heathall industrial estate and found both the produce and staff to be great, I popped into the Thornhill shop to have lunch. I did make a slight mistake in thinking it was quite busy and I'd return after a walk around town! It didn't get any quieter, very popular with the locals, old and young alike, and passers by getting takeaways. I sat down and a lady came to take my order. Lovely BLT on a panini accompanied by coleslaw and side salad washed down with a carton of orange guide all for £4:30, fab.

Anyone visiting Thornhill should stop in at Marchbanks. Marchbanks is easily the best place in Thornhill to stop for breakfast, lunch, there wide range of cakes and pastry’s or even for a loaf of there freshly baked bread. Everything’s so tasty and all the girls make u feel welcome and compared to all the other places to eat in Thornhill, Marchbanks is so underpriced. Definitely worth a visit

Good service, terrific variety of bakery food and coffee/tea. Try to avoid school lunch hour. Convenient location at centre of Thornhill, just near the chocolate shop.

We stopped for a coffee and stayed for lunch. Delicious sandwiches, good coffee and proper pineapple tarts. Yum. Friendly staff and easy parking nearby. Unfortunately the following day we bought steak pies which were full of good steak but the pies were far too salty.

This is a modern styled café with an attractive view over the River Nith and Criffel, about 5 miles outside Dumfries. Getting to the location can involve a pleasant rural/coastal circular drive taking in attractions at Caerlaverock Castle and the wildfowl Nature Reserve. There is a free to use public car park at the site. On a solo visit in September 2024 I dropped in without pre-booking and managed to get a table despite the fact the place was quite busy. There was a quirky choice of snacks on the menu, as previously experienced, and on this occasion I had the Huevos Barqueros (£9.95) which was toasted sourdough topped with crushed avocado, (mild) Harissa, rocket lettuce, creamy feta cheese and a poached egg. The flavours were good and the overall snack was tasty however the poached egg was barely warm and the overall portion was not large. On that occasion there was a limited choice of cakes on display however I had a piece of roulade with a meringue outer edge and Black Forest filling. This slightly different treat was filling and tasted good. By the time I had added a fruity flavored low alcohol IPA to accompany the lunch my bill came to just over £20 which I thought was okay. Service was pleasant and the timing of delivery good. I followed up the visit a month later with a reservation to meet up with a couple of relatives for lunch. They were delayed about 30 minutes en route and whilst I had a coffee and admired the view, staff were understanding and there was no pressure on me to give up the table which was appreciated. Once my relatives arrived, we had a pleasant tasting lunch which was able to satisfy my relatives particular dietary requirements in a relaxed atmosphere. On both visits I noticed that the menu was a bit dog-eared and grubby looking and could probably have been better protected by being laminated or inside a plastic covering. The toilets in contrast are very well maintained! There is a small shop on the site selling a limited number of products.

Called in for a quick pint whist up from Manchester ended up staying all afternoon. The elderly gentleman David behind the bar was an absolute star. The blonde lady ( whose name I didn’t get) was a great host being friendly and welcoming. One of the locals was very friendly and I enjoyed a couple of good chats whist ordering from the bar . The restaurant side looked great but we didn’t have Tim to eat. There’s a small seating area outside some of it partially covered. If you want a pint at a friendly pub you won’t go wrong her 😁
