Manvers Arms in Doncaster

Dropped in for an early evening meal. We had a fish and chips and a steak and ale pie. Lovely friendly pub, great service, good beer and really well done food. A real gem.

If you plan a visit here take a coat it’s really cold inside no heating on at all our family of 12 all agreed how cold it was we all sat with our coats on except dad who didn’t take one to eat our meals Waited almost 1 hour for food and we pre booked our food Food … dads fish was lovely a good size too with home made chips Steaks and burgers were good too However 2 of us had roast of the day wish we hadn’t it was a piece of overcooked chicken breast with microwaved mash frozen roast potatoes hard stuffing and the veg was rock hard only thing nice was the Yorkshire pud very poor … we thought it would be like the Sunday dinners they do .. no definitely not

Good food but awful wait times. I was there with family for lunch and we had to wait over an hour and a half despite there only being 3 others in the restaurant. We then ordered a treacle sponge which was severed without custard and even when we asked for it we didn’t receive it. Inexperienced waitress with slow service. Good food but not worth the wait. Be wary of wait times if you are in a hurry.

We were shown to our table promptly. Three adults and a toddler requiring a high chair. We ordered soft drinks which came quickly. We had to ask for a waitress to then come to take our food order after waiting 20 minutes. Our food then took over an hour to arrive, by which time our toddler was very unsettled and we were past being hungry. Waitress was friendly but clearly was inexperienced. Food itself was adequate. Chips were really nice. But the rest was just ok. I noticed another party return one of their meals. I'm not sure of the reason but it didn't surprise me. I have had several lovely meals at this pub in the past but my recent experience has made me question whether I would visit again.

Ruined Mother’s Day meal ! Drove down from Leeds to take my 85 year old mum for a rare family meal and it was ruined as they’d obviously tried to squeeze as many tables in as possible and had turned the heating OFF as it had got warm - we were sat at table 3 - exactly where everyone queued to get their food so me and my mum were constantly banged in to - plus the people were coming and going and were very loud and with the door constantly opening - we were all very very cold and our food went cold too quickly - so we left it - it was FREEZING !! We’ve been going for over 30 years and my mum and dad met here over 60 years ago - I went to complain and the manageress could not have cared less Unfortunately they’ve lost over 50 years of custom as they chose quantity over quality Will not go again - patronage is everything and they couldn’t have cared less - I get one day a year to make it a special day and we could not wait to leave - sad day :(

Appalled by the environment, not clean dirty coffee menus, bar,tables,entrance and toilets. They had all their largest off sale with only coors available! There was 3 people in the pub and staff was just stood about in a cluttered area at the top doing nothing. Poor experience after going in there for some time.

Just had a beautiful carvery here. Plenty of fresh veg and well cooked Pork, very enjoyable and reasonably priced. Very busy, so I am guessing lots of other visitors enjoy eating there!!! 👌

Lovely staff, food is fabulous. Ladies toilets need work, one with no lock and neither have hooks on the doors. Need some maintenance

Came Monday 12th feb for lunch, we haven’t been in a while was lovely but I do have one complaint, young girl was working and the music was dreadful A lot of older people in and the music was very loud dance music I think she was playing songs that she liked not what the customers like. In this kind of pub you don’t expect that kind of music so please switch back to 70s and 80s. My mum is 81 and she was struggling to hear me speaking.

Called on Sunday the 3rd of February with my wife to have Sunday lunch and I've never been so disappointed! It started off great as I was shown to my table by a Cheerful waitress but unfortunately it went downhill from there!! I went to the bar and got met with a grumpy barmaid who clearly didn't want to be there. I then purchased my Carvery tickets and my drinks and went to queue for my meal and waited what seemed like an awfully long time as the man behind the Carvery had long conversations with all and sundrie (no sign of the jolly fat bearded bloke who normally carves) . The veg was OK but the cauliflower cheese had no favour to the sauce and to be honest I don't think the chef knows how to do a decent cheese/Bechamel sauce. I did notice that The Manvers is doing a couple of themed nights next month but I don't think we'll bother as in my opinion if the chef who was on Sunday lunchtime can't make a simple cauliflower cheese sauce right how can he do the theme nights!!!

Booked for dinner at 1830 on Friday, mid December. Bar was busy restaurant 70% full. Served a menu and drinks promptly. We later found out that Christmas menu was available but wasnt offered to us. The place was warm, with a lit open fire. Christmas decorations were poor. Ordered dishes including Scampy, fish and salads. They arrived promptly and it tasted very nice, but had no tartare sauce nor salad cream (Didnt tell us before we ordered). Plates were cleared afterwards, and with only one other table occupied we were abandoned. I called the waitress after serving the other table and she replied without making any eye contact or intention of coming over. She replied they only had 2 choices of sweet course. she sent someone else who took a fresh drinks order (no decaff tea). I noticed a different choice of sweet course going to the other table to be told those choices were on the Christmas menu and not available to us. We werent offered the christmas menu nor told of the limited pudding offering. At 20.30 the last orders bell sounded. The waitress came over a few minutes later to tell us the pub will be closing in 10 minutes ie at 9pm. Will not be returning.

We have been coming here for quite some years and the food is delicious, becky has looked after us for a long time always been amiable and we recently had my dads funeral here where once again she was so accommodating. Happy to see braised steak back on the menu !!

Been coming for many many years, the last few times has been getting worse, last night topped it, ordered fish that had very little fish in and cooked to death, chips only warm, we’ve never complained but thought we should tell the staff to let the chef know, obviously for his future, when paid staff never said she’d told the chef so never got a sorry and never offer a little discount even though we would have insisted paying the full bill, pretty shocking really and will not go back, also no heating on and noticed people had there coats on 😝

Lunch off spec. Many years since we last ate here but still the same traditional style pub inside. Needs updating a bit in places. We had garlic mushrooms. Delicious and filling. Hubby had a fair sized gammon,egg,pineapple & chips and salad and said it was nice. I had sunday dinner on a weekday. Good portions, nice fresh veg, though meat, beef a bit chewy but tasty. Overall decent value. But please put the fire on! It was nippy. The other custs were sat in their coats. Hence stars reduced sorry.

Awful experience today. Been lots and lots of times before and usually enjoyable. However, today was very uninviting, very cold and the food only just acceptable. Very disappointed, won't be returning for some time.

Stopped by here for lunch with my husband last week, been wanting to go for ages and not had the chance. We both had the hunters chicken sandwich and can say it was definitely worth the wait, can’t wait to go back! Packed with plenty of chicken, bacon & sauce - delicious sandwich, served with homemade chips and a lovely fresh side salad. Would recommend we had a lovely lunch. The staff are always friendly and really helpful as well

Not particularly inviting from the outside, but don't be deceived. The food here is excellent. Originally we were headed for The Plough at Wath Upon Dearne which looked very inviting from the outside and it's also on TripAdvisor, however, embarrassingly we were told on arrival that they didn't serve food...ooops. Embarrassment turned to joy as you can see by the welcome we received at The Manvers. We will certainly be going back in the near future...10/10

very excited to be coming back after lockdown, wouldn't even give it a one star, when we arrived there were only 6 other tables occupied, but 1 hour later our food still hadn't arrived, and when it did some of it was cold, and something else was over cooked as if they had not got there timings right, we've been coming here for many years but seriously this is the last time we come, it seriously has gone down hill big time, please think twice before coming, there are many places to eat in the area, 100% definateley give this a miss.

Suprise meal out with hubby and the service was excellent, all tables well spaced out, waitress was very attentive and brought meal and drinks promptly also asked more than once if everything was ok. My husband had to start the special black pudding stack ! It was a meal in itself! I had garlic mushrooms which were ok but a bit greasy. I never normally write negative reviews, I like to promote places I’ve enjoyed eating in rather than complain but my experience tonight was beyond disappointing We’ve eaten at this pub quite a few times over the last 2 years and have always thought the food was very good, but after our visit tonight I’m unlikely to return We booked and arrived on time, to be told our table had been taken and we were then squashed into a table where you could hardly get the chairs out so this made it very uncomfortable and to be honest I wish we’d left. Social distancing did not exist!! The food was good but the lack of service really let’s this place down. We waited ages to be even given a menu. We were never asked if everything was ok nor were we asked if we wanted an further drink etc. We ate, paid and left, will take my custom elsewhere

This was a great first visit. We were due to eat at a well established pub, not too far away from manvers arms. On booking I read their reviews and they were appalling re covid systems in place and food, which was a surprise as we had eaten there many times last year. It was our anniversary so we cancelled our booking and contacted Manvers Arms who were able to accommodate us. They had good systems in place, spacious tables and good service. The food was realy good and good quality. It was a great first visit and we will definitely return.

Visited yesterday as it was my birthday.First time we have been out for a meal since the pandemic began.Booked for 14.15 ordered drinks and were shown to our table. We were waiting quite a while and had to go to the bar to ask if we were in fact meant to order there. Somebody then came to our table to take our order at 14.35. We ordered 2 steak pies,one haddock and chips and one roast of the day.At 15.40 our food still hadn't arrived although staff were serving food to many other people that had arrived well after ourselves. Went to the bar at 16.00 to ask where our food was to be told it was the next out. Finally got our food at 16.05,no apology for our wait or explanation,had to order more drinks as our initial drinks were long gone.Thought we may have got those free as a good will gesture but no.The food was fine although chips were sparce, but very disappointed in the customer service. If we'd have had an apology and a good will gesture I would not have written this review but we received neither.

My wife and I joined our friends for a late dinner on August bank holiday Monday at the Manvers Arms. This was a real treat. The social distancing procedures were adequate, the table service was very good and the food was exceptional. Well worth a visit, will be returning in the near future.

Went for a bank holiday meal with family/friend and the food was amazing and well worth the wait. Three of us had the 12oz steak and it was cooked to perfection and huge!! chips and onion rings were home cooked, another of our party had a chicken and bacon baguette and again looked and tasted amazing staff were friendly and attentative but not over the top... will definitely go back and would be happy to pay full price for the food (went on the eat out to help out deal)... covid safe and all precautions in place including social distancing, one way system and hand sanitiser stations.... Made our bank holiday, thankyou xx

I booked a table for myself and my wife at the Manvers arms, we were seated in the middle of the bar area on a small table well within the 2-meter range of other diners. also, the placement of the table was placed right on the exit area (having a one-way system in force) anyone leaving the room walked right next to us as it was not possible to exit without passing within a few feet. We asked if we could move to an empty table we were told all the other tables were booked. an hour later still no food (still with empty tables in the corners) and after being coughed on by a few children and even bumped into by another diner, we left as neither of us felt safe staying. I cancelled our order and they still made me pay full price for the two sodas we had while waiting (even though it was on the eat out help out nigh), didn't argue cos I just wanted to go after this farce) The first time we have been out since this pandemic started. totally awful night.

Decided to go out for lunch first time since lock down. Went to manvers Arms and staff were really friendly and working so so hard to keep everything extra hygienic. Absolutely wonderful food many thanks

Been tonight for a family meal for two adults and a child. Exemplary throughout. Greeted with a friendly service, drinks served then shown straight to our table. Spaced out all in line within the current guidelines. Orders taken swiftly and pleasantly. Even though the place appeared to be at full capacity meals came very quickly and were piping hot and most of all delicious. We’ve eaten at several places since reopening and this was by far and above the best. A wonderful relaxing atmosphere which is lacking at most places we’ve visited and a friendly and prompt service.Garlic mushrooms, steak and fudge cake all highly recommended.Prices very acceptable even before the government scheme was implemented on the bill.

I booked a table last week for my family to celebrate my Dad's birthday, and unfortunately I wish I had booked somewhere different.We queued to get into the pub, once we were next in line I explained to the bar staff that we were waiting to be seated at a table we had booked; they told us to sit on the table next to the door as we were blocking the way for people who just wanted the bar.The table was booked for quarter past 6 in the evening, we were probably seated by half 6. The staff member who seated us took our drinks order, and explained that there was no drinks menu when I asked for one.The restaurant was busy, perhaps too busy, and when we asked if we could order food we were told that they were taking people's orders in turn. Some time passed and we were asked what food we'd like to order, I also asked for a jug of water for the table at the same time, this was at perhaps 10 to 7.We did not receive our jug of water until around 8pm, it was impossible to get a drink at the bar as the queue was far too long, a table next to us gave up and left before their food arrived.Our food arrived at around 20 to 9, my mother has type 2 diabetes which was why I booked the table earlier as she needs to eat within a reasonable time to what her body is used to; she ordered scampi and said that it was under-cooked.I will not be recommending this place to anybody, and will unlikely return any time soon.

We were disappointed the standard / quality of the food was not as we normally expect from this place. The carvery was ok, just, but the dessert a strawberry cheesecake was appalling, really for almost 5 quid I would have expected it to have strawberries, it must have been bought from the basics part in the supermarket. We had a table of 6 and we were reasonably regular customers. Get rid of the abhorrent cheese cake.

I must admit I was a little nervous it was our 1st meal out since lockdown all my worries quickly shifted all precautions were put in place the food was as it always is prefect i can't wait to go back. The waitress was lovely 2 .

Well the wait is over and once again the Manvers Arms is open and ready to welcome customers old and new. It is good to see that all required C19 measures are in place with the staff well briefed. Now to business, The Sunday Roast is as good as ever with all the trimmings. This is one of the great meals, made all the better with the superb yorkshire puddings. We really enjoyed our visit. Yes we were cautious, but very quickly assured that all is in hand. Get a table booked and support this great place.

Well, as the country slowly starts to get back to some sort of normality, what better place to enjoy our first evening out in what seems like forever... The Manvers Arms, and yet again even after being closed for a long time, was a delight.If you want the perfect old English country pub, look no further. Amazing stone building with beer garden and outdoor seating, rustic beams and paneling inside the cosy bar and dining rooms, real open fireplaces for the colder months.The staff are friendly and efficient as always, the whole pub was prepared for opening in the new normal, with protective screens at the bar and limited number of tables to dine at, and boy is it worth dining at...For starters my wife had the Garlic Mushrooms on Toast, but this was no ordinary toast, a large piece of rustic bread, topped with mushrooms smothered in cheese and garlic sauce, amazing. I had the Pigeon Breast from the specials board, beautifully cooked and served with black pudding crumble, bacon strips and spring onion, all tied together with a rich red wine jus. Spectacular!The mains continued the excellence, I had the braised beef with creamy mash and a huge Yorkshire pudding, served with seasonal veg and a beautiful rich gravy. My wife had the chicken and chorizo with a woodland sauce, again served with veg. Just perfect. To top it off the drinks were great too, not overpriced and a lovely fresh pint (Bira Moretti) and my wife had the Martell. Needless to say that we will be returning to this wonderful place. I can't recommend it enough.

I have been a few times now and never had a bad meal. The food is flavoursome, well cooked and reasonably priced, if I was going to be really critical, the garnish salad was a little tired, but it doesn’t detract from the main meal. I will happily go back. And to top it off, the beer is good.

The food here is amazing, great choice and fine ingredients making for super tasty food. The staff are so friendly and always make you welcome.We often go for Sunday lunch but in an evening when they do a plated carvery again excellent value and a lovely ambience to the place.
