The pictures are quite deceiving. It is an awful hotel, looks so dated. It can go for a charming old world look, but to me it just looked so cheap and needed a lot work to get ir right. The rooms were horrible and smelly, the bed was awful. The carpet stunk. The bathroom was horribly designed, and the toilet and sink were so close by. Worst hotel by far on the NC500 route. The hotel from outside looks grand. Perosnally, I hate shiny brightly coloured bedding and it just doesn't make for a relaxing stay. You need warm and toned colours in a bedroom.

Right, some of the stuff is dated and old, but who cares when the hotel is like this, its old and its wonderful. Place oozes character, staff are epic, and what a great location. Would come back in a shot.

Presentable exterior to the building, looks impressive from outside. We stayed for 2 nights experiencing different rooms across our stay. The bathrooms were good with lots of hot water and good bath/ shower combo. Quality of room seems to depend from room to room. Some seemed older and definitely in need of some TLC, some stains on carpet and mold around windows and behind curtains. Sheets on beds seemed OK but mattress wasn't great. Seemed to be very quiet around the hotel and in need of some love but has exceptional potential to be a great hotel if general decor/ condition is updated. Better lighting would also help to brighten the place up. Overall the stay was OK but a bit odd with some sections if hotel blocked off and seemly disused such as the swimming pool and spa area which looks long neglected (not open but would have been a good addition)

Just returned from a great weekend at this hotel. The room was a bit 'tired' around the edges but in general it was good value for money given it was a huge room with a massive four poster bed, which was super comfy. Staff were all very pleasant and attentive. The highlight was the standard of food in the restaurant which was excellent. We dined in both nights (after enjoying a great dinner on the 1st night) and were very impressed.Couldn't fault the service or the quality of the food which is probably why the restaurant was so busy.Would recommend if your looking for a quiet, relaxing break.

Well worth a visit, even if not staying in the hotel. Little touches like serving freshly made sharp coleslaw with smoked duck breast, and petit pois a la francaise (with lettuce) make a difference.

Very grand looking building but needs a lot of work. Basics like filthy carpets in rooms really let it down. We had large rooms with comfortable beds but rooms didn’t feel clean. New carpets or industrially cleaned would be a quick win. Decor generally is poor. Impressive public spaces (except the tiny bar) let down by lacklustre reception experience and probably the poorest hotel breakfast we have ever had. Bacon and egg was just that - one small rasher and one egg. Tea & coffee self serve from flasks. The breakfast waiter was very helpful & pleasant which was a positive and he brought us a pot of tea when the flask ran dry. I would not go back here until I’d heard there had been significant investment in the property and people. Hopefully one for the future.

I booked this hotel for two nights as we needed to travel to Elgin at short notice. After reading the reviews I was pretty nervous, but on arrival was pleasantly surprised. We arrived late in the evening (after 11pm) but were welcomed and shown to our rooms by a friendly member of staff. Our room (a standard double in the main building) was nice, quiet and comfortable with a great shower and comfy bed. It was a bit on the cold side but to be fair the temperature outside was -1. The public parts of the hotel are nice and seemed fairly well maintained. Breakfast on the first morning wasn't that great (cooked stuff was not that good and the milk was off, albeit quickly replaced!), but was much better on the second. All the members of staff that we met were friendly and helpful. There was plenty of parking, the hotel's just a few minutes drive from the centre of Elgin and a couple of minutes walk from a Tesco which was really convenient for us. The hotel is a little old fashioned in parts but for the price we were pleased with our stay and had no complaints.

We arrived poorly light driveway. Beautiful surroundings. On entry warm greating friendly service.were taken to room . No phone in room only 1 key card given .Having stayed in other hotels same star rating had these facilities and more. Day 1 nice good morning however had to make own toast if required as although offer poached eggs on toast you make own toast. Told could not have earl grey tea as a breakfast choice as only lunchtime onwards. Limited breakfast choice poor quality of cooking. Night meal not like pictures on site very poor quality stroganough was off mushrooms slimy foul tasting. Key card to room had to be swapped 5 times as system faulty .Last day breakfast different staff was shouted at and told where to sit like we were a dog or animal. Potato scones were rock hard pouches eggs solid when complained growled at . Whilst having breakfast watched as another couple were shouted at for sitting at a table they had been at day before and then they were moved like wild animals. Staff dropped cutlery and sworn when this happened. We quickly packed and left nobody said goodbye was refused receipt as I had pre paid. Really was as if jeckle and Hyde had taken over.Sad as start had been nice . End a nightmare. Really should have had somebody there to say goodbye as they had said hello at start. Pictures of food totally different to what was served. Have heard that previous owners went bankrupt and new people trying to salvage damaged repertation pitty they failed in this occasion.

I was staying in Elgin as I was on a course in the local area. The interior and exterior of this building is magnificent and full of character. It is great that it has kept it's original charm while still being updated enough to allow for a pleasant stay. Our bed was a huge sleigh bed and possibly the most comfortable I have ever slept in. The bathroom was great, really liked the powerful shower. All staff we encountered we friendly and helpful. We appreciated being able to relax in the lounge area with a glass of wine while perusing the menu. Then having our food order taken from here and being escorted to the restaurant just in time for our food. A great touch. The food was fantastic, as was the wine selection. When we return to this area, this will be my first choice of hotel.

My husband and l have just returned from a 2 day stay. Hotel looks impressive from outside, but unfortunately that’s where the good points end. Our room, which was room 25, was large but tired looking. Roof was badly stained where water had leaked in, also canopy above bed was also badly stained, il assuming also with water damage also. Skirting boards were very dusty, and when we tried to draw the curtains they came off the runners. Bedside lamp was also stained. Worst bit was when I got up during the night to go to the bathroom, I slipped on the floor. When we turned the lights on we discovered that water was coming through the ceiling. We had to put a towel on the floor to catch the water. We complained to staff the next morning, but we were advised he did not deal with complaints, we would have to email the Mansion House. We were also told there wasn’t another room we could have, and it ‘was an old hotel’. We decided not to go for breakfast, because we had simply lost faith in the hotel. We paid £ 218 for 2 nights, and we think we were entitled to a clean dry room. We have emailed the hotel, os I will advise you if they compensate us in any way.

When we arrived at the hotel we were met by a very pleasant man on reception who showed us to our room in the original part of the building. The room was excellent, nice decor, nice bathroom and no issue of damp or smells as we had read. It also had a cupboard you could have almost fitted an extra bed in!

I was looking for a hotel that would suit my needs for 1 night away with work so I found ‘Mansion House’ on a website. Looking at the outside and the rooms on the website I thought that I’d give it a go. Unfortunately, the reality didn’t meet the website. The outside is stunning with a traditional exterior, nice grounds and plenty of parking but that’s where the website similarity ended. As I entered the hotel the entrance floor runner was threadbare and a lot of touristy leaflets which is to be expected considering the location. I went to reception where I was greeted by 2 people not in any uniform or suit which I would have expected considering the grandeur of the exterior. I was taken to my room (which was a nice touch) and told when breakfast was then I was left alone. The room was quite big, but the furniture was mismatched with handles missing off drawers and a TV stand that was completely out of place and looks like it should be in a lounge. The bathroom was a good size but when the shower was used it almost flooded the floor as the shower guard wasn’t very good. The bed was comfy and clean which is always good. My breakfast the next morning fit in with the overall experience. I felt I had to clean my cutlery before I used it. Soup spoons mixed with desert spoons for people to use and eat their cereal or grapefruit, coffee out of thermos that could be used at a conference meeting and the glasses weren’t clean. I ordered a cooked breakfast and when it arrived it was warm, not hot.

The rooms are large and comfortable and the huge beds are exceptional. There are a few minor repairs which need to be attended to, such as rails coming loose in the bathroom. The heating could not be turned on, and the rooms were quite cold at night (although it was supposedly summer). There is no elevator, so you have to haul your luggage upstairs. It is a gracious and lovely place, which with a few improvements and attention to detail could be really outstanding.

We stayed for two nights at the Mansion house hotel and i could not recommend to anyone that they stay here. The exterior of the home is beautiful, and it looked wonderful as we pulled up the drive. The interior was very musty and tired, the room was not the cleanest, with grimy carpeting. We visited at the end of July during one of Scotland's hottest weeks - we did not sleep a wink because of the hot temperature in the room. on the morning of the second day we left the windows open after housekeeping closed them in an effort to get an airflow going. We returned at the end of the day only to find that someone had come back in and reclosed the windows. The service in the restaurant for both breakfast and dinner was terribly slow. Even the TV in our room didn't work and the wifi didn't work at all in the whole place. it was a very disappointing place to stay and I would not go back.

This place is called a hotel but it’s really a B&B.; The bar and restaurant is run by another company. In saying that the room I had was large and clean with a bed that was the size of my house.......The staff were attentive and polite and nothing was too much trouble. Dinner in the restaurant was really good and well presented, but they have to do something with the coffee at breakfast as it’s disgusting. Overall the place requires a massive cash injection to reinstate it to it’s former glory. It’s difficult to rate this, as the restaurant was good and the rest was average.

The hotel looks the part from the outside, however, as you approach, you go through a housing estate. Inside is a Victorian nightmare. The decor is a century or two out of date. There was an old b&w; photograph showing what it used to look, which looked like a nice country house. The next room presented us with features you’d normally see outside, like a stone balustrade. There was an ugly fireplace made out of cement, which I couldn’t imagine was original. In the same room was a snooker table which has been out of commission for awhile due to a large tear in the felt. Our room which was supposed to be a superior room, located in an ugly, dimly lit corridor, was very outdated by about three decades. Hung with shabby fabric and dated velvet padded headboards. There was a terrible stench of cheap air freshener permeating the room, which seemed to be trying to mask an underlying odour of sewage. We were located on the ground floor in room 22 but couldn’t get the outside door open due to a broken handle, so couldn’t air out the room. My husband was scalded taking a shower the next morning when the water suddenly changed temperature. He nearly slipped and fell jumping backwards to avoid being scalded, which could have been disastrous. The power of the shower is enough to strip your skin. The tall chairs in the dining room were hard and uncomfortable and much too big for the cheap tables, you couldn’t cross your legs under the table. Dinner was revolting and expensive. It was “steak night” when we arrived so we ordered two fillets for £39.95, sauce was extra. The steak Diane sauce had tomatoes in it and was very watery. Breakfast was sparse the next morning. There were cereals but no breakfast pastry. The full Scottish had the cheapest pieces of meat, one of each. The coffee was terrible. We ended up heading to a Starbucks afterwards. It was not a nice experience and you knew as soon as you entered the premises, it wasn’t going to be a nice experience.

Came to this hotel as it was advertised as having a restaurant, bar, pool and spa - as well as lovely rooms and grounds. The building is lovely - like a small castle as you drive up the driveway. However, when we arrived to a warm welcome, we were informed that there was no restaurant but that hopefully it would be available the following evening. We then found out that the pool and spa were not open either and that the hotel was recovering from having gone into receivership the previous year. The room was comfortable if a little cramped (beds very comfy though) and the breakfast on each of our two mornings was good. The bistro restaurant was open the following day but we had already booked at the Ada Turkish restaurant in town, which we really wanted to visit. It is a shame that the pool, etc were not available. There were huge dehumidifiers just along from our room all the time we were there - which was a little noisy!! But it didn't keep us awake. The lounge was very warm and cosy and would be a lovely place to have a drink before dinner. Hopefully the bistro will be successful and the hotel can get back to being the luxury establishment it deserves to be.

I had made my booking for the Mansion House in somewhat of a rush and failed to notice that the hotel does not currently have leisure facilities (gym or pool) available to guests. This was explained to me at the time of check-in, with the reason given that the hotel has recently gone in to administration and is currently being run on a bed-and-breakfast basis only. This was a disappointment as I like to be able to use the gym when I am away on business. However, I should have taken more notice during the booking process and I can’t blame anyone but myself for this oversight.

I stayed here for one night on a short business trip to Scotland. The hotel has recently been up for sale, and was only available for b&b; as restaurant and bar were closed. The room was nice, good sized room and a huge bed. The town was only 5 minutes walk away. Breakfast was OK.

I stayed here for two nights with a friend recently, on a short trip to north of scotland. The hotel has recently been up for sale, and was only available for b&b; as restaurant and bar were closed. The room we had was lovely, good sized room with usual facilities, and two four poster beds which were extremely comfortable. The staff were friendly, and happy to recommend places to eat in the town, which was only 5 minutes walk away. Breakfast was OK, but hopefully when the hotel is sold and fully functioning the restaurant will be open again. I would love to return again, and would definitely recommend a stay in this beautiful hotel.

We booked another hotel and one of my friend saw the rooms for this fantastic castle-like bed and breakfast at a reasonnable price (approximately 50 pounds per person... which was like half if not a third of the normal price).

Remember if you advertise fine dining you will attract those of us who just do not want to munch through a hamburger so are actually choosing your restaurant for the food experience. To that end it is incumbent upon the chef to instruct the waiting staff as to the ingredients and cooking preparation. It would also be worthwhile if the chef actually came into the restaurant and speak with the diners...guests of a like mind interested in cooking. There were only 12 other diners at the time. The ,meal itself was excellent and the staff most attentive.

The hotel restaurant excels with a diverse menu that is beautifully presented. We loved the idea of looking at the menu from the comfort of the bar or lounge before dinner. A wonderful place for that special occasion.

Had a good 2 days lovely hotel paid for upgrade room £25 per night which was lovely food very good, but think staff could inform guests of vouchers when they are using them. If you ever use a groupon voucher remember to have 3 courses and not 2 as you will pay more for 2 courses than 3 if u have a voucher. Apart from that restaurant staff excellent Connor a young man excellent service, didn't get the young lady from Latvia name who had been there from September but she was also excellent. I would also say the house staff that we had on our 2 day stay had our room up to a high class of cleaning. Had one issue which has changed my mind about going back. But thanks to staff we met who made our stay welcome. Also my daughter got us afternoon tea with bottle of prosecco of Picts u will c but we had no napkins and no staff came to check if everything was ok or we would have asked for some, but would say afternoon tea was lovely and right next to lovely fire in drawing room. Hope this review helps and does not put anyone of going to the hotel.

Just back from a couple of nights away at the hotel. We were greeted by pleasant staff who gave us an overview of what to expect. We then went up to our room which was lovely. The beds were comfy and very cosy which was needed as the only issue with the room was it being rather chilly, even with the heating on!The bathroom was nicely decorated but if you are short like me or have a disability you will have issues getting into the bath due to the rather wide ledge! We had dinner the first evening of our stay and ordered from the set menu. The food was delicious apart from the beef in the starter lacking in taste. Only thing I felt was that each course was brought out too quickly so I didn't have time to settle. Also you will hear the conversations going on in the kitchen which ruined the atmosphere a bit.Breakfast was average but certainly set you up for the day! The hotels facilities were great, the steam and sauna were fantastic. The hotel itself is a bit tired and needs a few bits and pieces done to upgrade it but it still looked good. For example there were splash marks on the wall in the dining room and they had covered fire exit signs with a sheet of paper!Overall, I really enjoyed the stay but feel that we were lucky that we paid the Groupon price and not the full price of the hotel!

Me and my partner have just returned home from a lovely 2 night stay here.We went for a standard room which was very nice.Iron/ironing board, lots of towels and bath robes, tea/coffee facilities and a lovely big TV were found upon arrival.I belive last night was actually the best night sleep I've had in months. The bath/shower was very tasteful and modern. Nice and deep!. The dining experience was amazing!! I tip my hat to the chef for the amazing foods that arrived in front of me.We ordered off the set 3 course menu, don't let the 4 choices per section dismay you... it was sublime!!! A lot of effort got put in to it.The normal menu was pretty good looking also but we never ate off it. And very reasonable prices... no more than £15 a main. Breakfast. ..... well.... I was full till 2pm. A full scottish yesterday morning and this morning I had smoked salmon and eggs... I have not seen so much salmon on one plate!!! Delicious. The waiting staff are brilliant! Very attentive but not in your face. Discreet. Very polite. They are equally on par with the excellent food!!I didn't appreciate the music. So.... they changed it to some relaxing classical for me. Apart from a minor pick up for the waiting staff which I will mention later. The spa facilities are adequate. The pool is not a full length and the gym is not huge however it is not cheap equipment. There is plenty for any fitness buff to use and get sweaty over. The pool attendant has a unlimited supply of fluffy towels for you to use.The steam room and sauna are hot and clean. Always a bonus! The bar has a rather wide selection of drinks (mainly whiskey) but not over priced either.*****My few pick ups which I hope the hotel reads.... These would have given me a 100% break and not a 95%.It's just those little things you notice and in your mind go 'hmmmmm'Single glazing in bedroom.... really? In the 21st century at a hotel of this calibre. The snooker table quality.... yes it costs to get it re-felted.. but again.... a hotel of this calibre having a ripped top table isn't a nice sight. Granted I'm no Ronnie so it didn't affect my game. But... if kids damage items... put a sign up... put a camera up... inform parents that damage will be paid for or something. The sauna door frame seems to require a looking at.The food splatterings on the dining room walls were not particularly nice. And lastly for the waiting staff....... When eating my meals I don't particularly want to hear your shrieking and conversations. The doors are not oak. Sound travels.... So to be blunt..... shush. You already do a fantastic job.... don't let yourselves down. In all.... bar my few pick ups this was a brilliant stay. The hotel does need a few tired areas re-touching up but bar that I recommend it Many thanks to everyone for a nice stay

Stayed for nights and we had a fantastic, relaxing time. Upgraded to room 2 which was excellent. Spacious with separate living area and 4 poster bed. Lovely big bathroom with 2 showers! We thoroughly enjoyed the food at the hotel and ate here both nights. Bistro braised rib of beef was a lovely winter meal and the dining room 3 course menu was superb. Can't fault the place at all. Staff were all lovely and they gave us a free bottle of wine with our evening meal to celebrate our recent wedding.

We stayed 2 nights at the Mansion House and ate one evening meal (extra) and 2 breakfasts which were included. There were 4 in our party and I'm the picky one. I was able to order off the Bistro menu while the others enjoyed the full dinner menu. Very good! Breakfast was excellent and fueled us quite well for our adventures in Speyside.

Costa Coffee is a busy coffee shop located on Elgin High Street. There is a good choice of food and drink items, and prices are on par with similar outlets in Elgin. However, I have two criticisms. There are not enough staff. Tables are not cleared quickly, and the counter staff who are very hard working are overwhelmed at busy times, causing queues and resulting in long waits for drinks and any hot food ordered.
