Big thanks to the restaurant team at the manor, especially Michael, for ensuring a perfectly choreographed family lunch for 18. You couldn't have been more helpful or efficient.

I dined here while staying at the hotel on my first night, but only because it was the Sunday of the bank holiday weekend and everywhere else was either booked or closed. I really did expect much much more for a restaurant attached to a hotel and Spa. Service pretty unprofessional, menu very restricted and food overpriced for what it was. Everything was pretty bland and lacked flavour. I wish i had reverted to my contingency of using deliveroo which would have tasted considerably better and cost £50 less. I will be in no rush to return

Caro y decepcionante. No lo recomendaría.

This is a very nice restaurant attached to an excellent hotel. The food is good although the service was not up to scratch when we visited. Would recommend however

Very pleasant and efficient staff. Salad starter was tasty and generous. Chicken main well presented. Had cheese board instead of dessert and this really big enough for two - not sure what a spoon of honey was doing on the board though. The presence of noisy small children does take something away from a dining experience - an adults only section would be an attractive proposition to more than just us I am sure.

Dinner at the Manor Restaurant was included in a spa break with some friends. I certainly was expecting to have a pretty lacklustre meal - particularly having read a couple of reviews ahead of time. Well....... it was fantastic! Starter of beetroot carpaccio with savoury cheese filling was superb. Followed by a delicious chicken with pasta. If I'm being picky, the chocolate tart wasn't the best dessert ever, but was extremely tasty. Possibly just not appreciated after the volume of food ingested prior to getting to the dessert course! Taken as a whole, the meal was absolutely excellent. If I then think about the deal including dinner, bed, breakfast and spa treatment - what an excellent package. I would definitely return for the food - and didn't expect to be saying that at all!

We had dinner here before a show. Service was friendly and knowledgeable. Menu was very good and the food was well prepared. Good wine list - although small selection. The restaurant has a very nice ambience and all in all it was an excellent experience.

I dined here on one occasion whilst booked into the hotel for four nights. Mercifully, our stay only included bed and breakfast, however, we decided to try the restaurant on our first evening. The restaurant is chilly, devoid of atmosphere and so dark one almost needs a torch to read the menu. A starter of mushroom soup was a gingery- coloured sludge which tasted of salt and chlorine - presumably their kettle needs descaling. For the main course I ordered lamb which arrived as grey, rubbery I" chunks, overcooked, unseasoned and badly presented. This was served with a small tangle of raw celeriac and an acrid, bitter, burnt-tasting (burnt? how, I wondered, given the lovely fresh herbs, garlic, anchovies etc from which it should be made) utterly vile, white muck which I presume was meant to be the "salsa verde". A smear of bottled mint sauce completed the much-trumpeted lamb dish; no gravy or jus. When I enquired - astonished - where the vegetables were, I was informed with terse dourness, in a hard to understand accent, that I should have ordered them separately. Thus I requested some new potatoes which needless to say never arrived. Our "large" glasses of wine were little more than a sherry glassful from the last quarter dregs of a bottle of red plonk. Wishing to take as little risk as possible, given the standard so far but still feeling hungry, we chose ice cream to follow which again was not enjoyable, starting to melt and unattractively served in black cereal bowls. I am not going to pull any punches here, this meal was a total disgrace and the most disgusting meal I have ever been served anywhere. I would like to know where the Hell these people do their training and who is responsible for letting such standards loose in a large, busy restaurant kitchen. If you cook yourself, as I do, you know when you are being served rubbish and being ripped off for a high price. In the circumstances, I did not feel able to complain because I was being treated to the meal by a dear friend who would have been saddened by a scene but, my goodness, better supervision is needed behind those kitchen doors!

The welcome from the restaurant staff was very warm and friendly. The food was excellent, well-cooked and presented. All 3 courses were faultless as was the unobtrusive service. My only small reservation is the mark-up on the wine but this is clearly a general management decision and nothing to do with the restaurant or kitchen staff.

I was staying at the Alveston with my Husband for his birthday and booked a table at the restaurant. It was amazing. A wonderful choice of food, locally sourced and beautifully cooked and presented. The staff were well briefed in the meals and able to advise on the best wine to accompany them. I would go back to the restaurant even if I was not staying overnight.

This is the first time I've ever walked out of a restaurant before finishing a meal ,and I hope the last! We has a bit of a giggle at the 'fussy customers' that kept sending things back to the kitchen while we awaited our food, turns out they were probably quite justified... The starters were edible, though the squid was very fishy tasting and had an overpowering harissa, and none of the advertised fennel. The mains however were shocking, I ordered the risotto as thought it would be a safe bet but it was completely dry and the squash was hard and raw, my husbands pork was grey and overdone. We each took a mouthful then decided to go to the bar and have some (very nice) sandwiches. I hope this was just an off day, perhaps with a substitute chef, as I don't know how a restaurant could survive producing such terrible cooking.

We used a voucher bought through Amazon and had great service and really good food. The menu looks traditional with only 6-8 choices for the starter and main courses but when the food arrived it looked amazing and tasted wonderful. And the desserts looked like works of art! We had been booked to eat in the bar which turned out to be packed with guests waiting to go from a lunchtime wedding reception to the evening reception and the bar was hot and not a pleasant experience - but we were fortunate enough to be moved to the restaurant. With the wedding reception, a small hen party dinner, and a 90th birthday big family dinner all going on at the same time we wondered if we would get overlooked but the staff were pleasant and attentive and provided a good service. We had a lovely evening.

The food was at best average and expensive (we had a similar meal in the local Marco Pierre White restaurant that was surprisingly a lot cheaper).I got the feeling that the staff were all trying to get away with the absolute minimum - just enough that you couldn't complain but not enough to make you feel welcome or feel you were getting a great level of service or value for money.Over two breakfasts:One of our friends asked for a vegetarian breakfast and was served a tomato and two mushrooms (they'd apparently run out of all the other ingredients). How could any chef think that was acceptable.Poached eggs that were inedible due to the amount of vinegar on them. When the waiter took the nearly untouched dish away he didn't even ask if there was a problem! At dinner, we asked for a Scallops (starter) dish as a main. They simply put two lots onto one plate (no vegetables or presentation) and charged double. The expensive Sancerre was barely chilled.Dinner for 4 adults and a child was £230 but with this level of service it is not value for money.

We ate in the Manor Restaurant at Macdonald Alveston Manor hotel and the staff were lovely. Carmine the waiter was fantastic and after looking at the menu, I not wanting wine but no beer on the list, he duly sent off for a pint from the bar. He made our night enjoyable and even gave us a complementary glass of Champagne with our dinner after finding out it was our birthdays and 30 years together. My wife and I not normally liking the stuff had a sip to be polite, but Carmine had served us well and it was lovely. The food was faultless and though not our usual fare, us more down market than up market, really enjoyed the combinations set before us. We also had breakfast the next day and that too was great. You also get a proper continental breakfast too with cheeses and meats. I had the full English while my wife had the continental. We really enjoyed our meal and will defiantly go again. And as for Carmine, he was a star, making us feel at ease and taking time out to chat to us. For us, the meal is just a small part of the enjoyment of dining out, the staff play a big part in it with excellent service and this is what we got.As for any negative, none really, though a jug of water on the table during the meal would be good. The food is not cheap, but the quality of the food is excellent and combined with the excellent service is worth the price.

After finding hotel to be very average in every other department we were actually blown away by the quality of the food. If only they could raise their decor standards to match the quality of the menu and food - the restaurant could be truly exceptional. Breakfast the following morning was a highlight - possibly best cooked breakfast I have ever had! Proper bacon (not watery/salty etc), proper mushrooms (that tasted like they had been picked in a field) - no grease or briney water on the plate and all piping hot.

We were guests at the hotel but could not obtain a table until 2045 despite calling at 1930. When we arrived there were several tables free but also a few larger parties so presumed kitchen was busy. Good wine list but unfortunate that the "highly recommended" choice was no longer available! Updates would be a suggestion. Starters of smoked salmon and terrine were tasty and the cote du boeuf for two was very good. Overall, a bill of £100 for two courses and a bottle of "substitute " wine all taken at a late sitting seemed OTT and therefore a second visit was not contemplated.

Aside from being loud and obnoxious on the first night and seating 5 of us at two round tables, on the second night we were dining late again at two small round tables and once the other guests had left the head waiter decided to spray the tables next to us whilst we were still on our main course.I would expect that from the local cad, not from an up market "AA Rosette" restaurant.

WE only went for a meal with a group of colleagues. The hotel looks great from the outside with a nice Spa. Reception areas lovely with oak pannelled walls and a beautiful fireplace-Things were looking good-they soon changed! The bread was out waiting for us, the resemblance of the bread to a minirugby ball was matched by its taste-stale, tough and bad. My first course of soup made Cup-a-soup look thick and tasty-this was packet soup at its worst and watered down to spread the misery.Main course of roast potatoes cooked the day before and reheated on the night made for challenging cutting up and a hard chew! The fork had prongs completely out of line which made the job harder still. The veggies were of the microwaved cheap frozen varity but were the highlight!!! The roast rib eye steak came however the chef decided (no one was asked how they wanted it) mine was over done, the wife's underdone and inedible. The gravy was ok. The large yorkshire pudding was soaked in cheap cooking oil, the bit that was free of oil was edible the rest an oilslick of disasterous proportions.Amazingly no one asked if everything was ok-I assumed they knew it was terrible and didn't want confirmation or confrontation. My colleagues poured wine for the table (stored on a seperate table) as the waiting staff felt this too was beneath them. The final cut came with the sticky toffee pudding which we renamed as stale brick with sugar glue with a hint of toffee essence-my word truely awful, you had to cut it with a knife! you had to taste it to believe it-horrible. The sauce was foul beyond imagination. The coffee however was really nice! so in tradtional Shakespearion language 'All's well that ends well' I think not!In summaryTruely awful food- the chef should be ashamed of him/herself -reheated, microwaved, stale tosh.Waiting staff need to ask how they want their meat cooked and how the food was and pour wineWhere was the manager?-surely a group of 18 people should be greated on arrival and bed farewell on departure.I left feeling hungry and my wife and I were ill all nghtI look forward to the managers comments!

A fascinating pub that we were told was once owned by Henry VIII and given to Catherine of Aragon on their divorce. Then owned by Magdalene College Oxford for hundreds of years. It’s certainly old with flagstone floors, lots of panelling and a no longer accessible secret passageway to the church across the road. Top that with decent beers, a short freshly cooked menu and friendly service

We went for a PRE BOOKED birthday meal at midday on a Saturday. The restaurant was empty. The staff were still hoovering when we arrived and no one gave a warm welcome. The service was very slow with a young girl who had little to know knowledge of the menu. Key things were overlooked. When we mentioned how cold the place was there was no offer to turn the heating on. The food was very hot and very tasty. The chef is very talented. Portions were fine. The price was a little on the high side for the poor service.
