Mandarin in Fenland

Had an absolutely appalling experience just trying to place an order...a problem with their phone meant they were unable to hear me for 90% of the call, and then had the gall to rudely accuse me of not listening, whilst simultaneously making me repeat myself 7 times per item ordered...I literally had to plead with the guy to listen to me instead of talking over me! 1st and last time we'll be trying this place...even if the food is out of this world (we haven't yet received it) its absolutely not worth the 25 minutes of effort it takes to order it!

Great service, delicious food, nice and quiet when we visited but we didn’t feel uncomfortable or like we were being watched. Would definitely go back.

If you enjoy a whole evening out in a restaurant where you're not rushed and left with plenty of time to talk whilst eating delicious food this restaurant is well worth a visit.

My, oh my. The worst Chinese I've ever had in my life. So disappointing. What the heck?? Thought we would try something new. Sit down meal as a couple. Drove here from March. Miniture portion sizes. Yes, we counted... 7 prawn crackers, 12 chips, 7 small chicken balls haha Apparently that's what you get when you go to a restaraunt according to the man serving. Coke £1.90 didn't even fill half pint glass I asked him if it was real coke he said yeah from a can. But couldn't show me the can. It was 100% from a bottle from Aldi 55p a bottle. Very little fizz remaining. £47 something it cost for me and the Mrs. Upon leaving I asked where the local kebab shop was because I'm still hungry. Terrible. Should have known to just leave as whilst sitting for 20 mins having a chat with the Mrs it was deserted. The phone didn't even ring once. Not one person came in for takeaway. If your a vegetarian go for the chicken chow mein, you won't get chicken in it anyway. Tasteless. Bland. Waste of money. No wonder why the interior is so outdated. Not enough custom to decorate. Sort you portions sizes out. Sort out your pricing. Ridiculous!! Do yourself a favor and save your money. Or do as I done after and get a kebab across the road.

Really decent Chinese takeaway, well priced and friendly welcome. Nice restaurant too. Worth a visit. Well located opposite a lovely old pub and in the heart of the town.

Visited early on a Saturday night seemed more interested in the takeaway than serving, 1 hour after arrival we had finished starter although only two other tables occupied main course came 15 minutes later, not the best They seemed short on staff as waiter spent more time in kitchen than making sure we were ok Won’t be back

Unfortunately 2 of our party were very ill from our meal here. Chicken was undercooked. But owner was very welcoming and nice throughout our meal it wasn't until afterwords the meal became unpleasant.

We always get our takeaways from here as well as eating at this restaurant . Very good food . A little quiet Good prices Will go again Shame no delivery service .

Used to be spot on, quality has deteriorated extremely. Everything over cooked, spring rolls and prawn toast rock solid burnt. gutted.

Great little space! Really good food. Peter was chatty and nice! Was in Whittlesey for a shoot for a week and was craving some good food! Amazing find. Decent prices and average quantities! The spring rolls and mushrooms stir fry was amazing! Loved the veggies in cashew sauce and my vegetarian fried rice! Had some drinks too! Clean and hygienic!

I love this little restaurant we go here for a tewat sometimes....the food is always freshly cooked and very nice and hot. The staff are lovely...highly recommended

Very good food, excellent service

Me and my mum went here for some dinner this evening. We are Chinese food lovers and are always keen to try new places, however Mandarin has become our new favourite. The food is absolutely incredible, truly made from the heart, and made to your dietary needs too (lots of veggie stuff). The wine and beer here is absolutely fantastic, too! Finally, the staff in here are wonderful and so so attentive. Would rate this restaurant above any other Chinese food place in Whittlesey! Thank you so much, I will definitely be back :)

Visited Whittlesey and we were looking for a high rated Chinese takeaway. The Mandarin seemed to rate highest so ordered from there. I always seem to be drawn to a sweet and sour Hong Kong or Cantonese, which I ordered. We also ordered chicken chow mein with a side of bean sprouts and curry sauce. Just to get to the point we wish we hadn’t ordered at all. The sweet and sour was soggy and tasteless, the chow mein was burnt with tiny pieces of chicken. We ordered chips which were also soggy. On the plus side the egg fried rice was ok as were the salt and pepper ribs. Won’t be back.

I don't often have takeaway meals and especially after I had bad one during the Virus crisis from another outlet but I thought I would try again and I am assured this time I shall be coming back when I feel like having a treat for myself. This food was very well cooked and very tasty and as I have to travel some way to my village it was still hot when I got it home. Well done, I will defiantly be back

Wasn't very busy but still had to wait for quite a while to even get a drink. Meal was delicious but service was very slow, unfortunately only one waiter and chef working.

Excellent taste. Restaurant area is very clean. Price a little high and food quite oily. If it wasn't for the oilyness we'd get their food regularly.

It was ok, was it Chinese food? Yes.......did it seem freshly cooked and hot? Yes......Was it edible? Yes...... Was the service good? Yes.......Is it worth the money? Not really....... Would we go back? Probably not!

I visited Mandarin with my parents for a family meal. We opted for tur £20p/h set meal and oh my gosh what a bargain. We got a platter of starters that included all the favourites - prawn toast, spring rolls, seaweed, ribs etc. Duck pancakes were plentiful and we were offered more. The mains were all really tasty and were offered top ups on the rice. It even came with coffee and mints included. The service was so attentive. I'm so glad we chose here. My parents are really impressed and already asking if we can book again when they next visit! Thanks Mandarin 😁

There was 12 in our party, we jointly decided on a 3set meal with ample food for everyone ... everything was both cooked and served to perfection, nothing was too much trouble ... will be returning at some point in ur social calendar

I took my wife to the Mandarin for our anniversary and I can say we was not disappointed, wonderful food and great service, I can highly recommend it

After having been away from Whittlesey for a few years, it was lovely to return to the refurbished Chinese restaurant on the high street. New owners a while ago and a new menu, fresh and clean. Simon is an excellent host. We had mixed starters, crispy duck, and a selection of main dishes that were fresh, tasty, well presented and amply sized. Crispy chilli beef was crunchy, tasty and hot, this is always a good benchmark for us. Service was good, wine was reasonably priced. We have since returned, and had a take away from there, can highly recommend.

Very sad to say that despite the positive tripadvisor reviews, me and the wife visited and I personally regret going. Service was great, but from the off, the place was empty (it was a Sunday night mind you), we had the full attention of the waiter (owner) who was very pleasant but from the confusing menu, had to ask for an explanation... a little uncomfortable.. real lack of atmosphere. Very glad we took the 5 starter option.. We had the chilli squid (dry deep fry crisp), satay chicken (dry - no satay sauce), mandarin ribs (quite unique), crispy sea weed & crab balls (overcooked).. has to ask for more sweet chilli sauce.. Followed by our much to be desired mains.. crispy chilli beef (I could taste no beef content sadly..) roast pork which was actually “ok”.. I hate leaving bad reviews but I won’t be back I’m afraid.. I’ll stick to the local Chinese take aways I think.. or East in Peterborough or better relied Wagamama in town next time..

Great food very friendly service highly recommend

Visited here midweek (three of us) for a quiet bite in preference to cooking at home. Not a great experience I'm afraid. Our visit was the nearest I've come to eating in the early sitting of Butlins dining hall in Skeggie, since I ate in the early sitting in Butlins dining hall in Skeggie with my youngest daughter almost ten years ago. The noise from the two family groups sitting either side of us was staggering, so much so I had to strain to hear what my wife was saying who was sitting next to me. Just what is it with parents who take young children out with them to dinner and are then oblivious to what they get up to and the impacts they have on other diners? Sorry to be a party-pooper, but when I eat out I like to eat it in a degree of peace, not as though I'm sitting in the middle of a kids play centre. I do recognise that this isn't any fault on the part of the restaurant. The food? What we were served with was pretty uninspiring and for me was a borderline tick in the good-to-go box. The local take-aways produce better (IMHO). I'm pretty sure some of it had seen the inside of a deep-fat fryer for a second time, and if not then the term "overcooked" would be an understatement. The glace cherry presented with the garnish that adorned the starter platter was a nice touch. All in all not great. This was my second visit to the Mandarin Palace since it re-opened under its present management (the food was equally disappointing on my first last year), and I regret to say it's highly unlikely there'll be a third. Sorry guys.

Lovely food and prompt service. Would’ve been 5/5 but we ordered spring rolls with our meal but this was forgotten about until I asked when we were mid way through our mains. Once brought out they were delicious.

1st visit this evening, stopped by without booking and we were lucky to get a table, 3 other parties were turned away after us so clearly popular. Food was of good quality and i lool forward to coming back to try other dishes (i will be booking next time tp avoid disapointment). Stand out dish for me was the singapore rice noodles, simply the best i've experienced in the peterborough area and we have lived here for 10 years. Portion size was large, i didn't think you could get that much chicken on a skewer!

The menu choice was very good , the Variety, service and cleanliness was outstanding and have ben back again in December and it was of the same high standard I would recommend it to anyone whether in Whittlesey or not, it is certainly worth travelling to, only downside is car parking you have to work a few minutes from a Car park, but if lucky can park almost outside.

Best Chinese in the area, excellent food and service, good value for money, we will be back soon with all our friends.

Just polished off a takeaway from this place ,couldn’t fault it very tasty and large portion size .

There was a big selection on the menu to choose from as well as set menus. The food was piping hot and well presented. The waiter was friendly and helpful but not pushy. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will definitely go again. We also picked up a take away menu on out way out. A good meal at a fair price.

Family group with members from Northamptonshire, Kings Lynn and St Ives meeting for a birthday celebration. This little gem of a restaurant's food was freshly cooked, tasty and the service was friendly and welcoming.

This was our first visit to the Mandarin, we have walked past before and it always looked empty. However, we decided to pay a visit. We were pleasantly surprised as the food was excellent, as was the service. We will definitely be back.

The Service was very good. The waiter could answer all questions from the menu: recommend and help choose and explain ingredients. They could also adjust the soup to make it vegetarian. They serve complimentary prawn crackers and all food came out of kitchen swiftly and warm. Highly recommend

This restaurant over the years has changed ownership, some were not that good, in fact diabolical would have been an understatement. This Mandarin Chinese has gone back to what it used to be, yes it has even changed its name. The food was terrific, hot wonderfully good and plenty of it. Had the set menu, was a very wise choice, so much of it and at an excellent price. Must mention the waiter who was really, really attentive and very helpful. He did all the waiting, ordering and takeaway business without even breaking into a sweat. Yes, yes, I would without hesitation go again and again, it was that good, glad to see it back where it should be. Top of the shop as they say, scores on the doors are a big fat 10. You certainly deserve it

This is an excellent restaurant large portions we had quarter crispy duck starter between us and the waiter asked us if we wanted extra pancakes which was a first our main meal was just as good pity we couldn’t eat it all definitely be going here again

Having a sudden craving for Chinese food and taking a look on Trip Advisor we booked a table at The Mandarin Chinese Restaurant.

We were looking for some Chinese food after a long day at the Cambridgeshire food and drink festival.

We went as a family with our teenagers. We found the food was much better than we expected. There service was good and the staff were polite and accommodating. Well worth a try if you want something a bit better than average

Six of us came for dinner for a birthday and we had a lovely evening. One of our group asked lots of questions and the waiter's answers were fascinating, he told us lots of stories about China and the items around the room. The food was delicious and we tried Chinese rice wine to finish the evening. Definitely recomend!

Visited with friends for my partners birthday. It was a last minute decision but they were quiet and we had a great meal. I particularly enjoyed the crispy chilli prawns. They also noticed a birthday card on the table and brought out a cake. Such a thoughtful surprise. So much better than the previous owners!

We visited here on Friday evening, (4 adults) the whole meal was amazing, the crispy duck was outstanding, the service excellent and informative, the cleanliness is second to none will definitely be returning

We just popped in early on Saturday night. Vegetarian option was delicious. Spot on, with food and service. Local to us, no need to travel with this restaurant on our door step.

Reviewed this place before a couple months ago and had to write in again. If it's possible to improve on perfection then this family have done it !

We had the set menu for two and enjoyed it very much. The food is excellent, the young waiter is pleasant and polite. The atmosphere is welcoming and clean, the loos are very clean too. I recommend this place, we will certainly be back soon!

We had an excellent meal for two here on a Friday night. Being from "out of town" we had wandered the streets in an attempt to gauge the most likely source of something good and while the Mandarin was almost empty, decided that we fancied Chinese. Expectations weren't great, however, due to the lack of other punters and a menu priced at the lower end of the range we're used to. The restaurant is not large nor swanky, but the decor is O.K. and the toilets are clean and well maintained. The food, however, I thought to be well above average. Starters of salt and peppered spare ribs and chicken satay were both high quality with good plump portions of meat (not those emaciated ribs you get in some places. The main courses, supported by fluffy egg fried rice were also very good although we might have chosen better. The char siu with beansprouts was a bit stewed so that the beansprouts had lost any crunch and the chicken with ginger and spring onion was less spicy than my wife had hoped although again the ingredients were top notch. The star of the show, though, was crispy shredded duck in chilli sauce. I'm a fan of crispy beef in chilli sauce and indeed crispy duck but I've not come across the duck prepared this way before and I only wish this place was nearer where we live so I could have it again. Couldn't fault the service which was low key and efficient. It's not uncommon for Chinese restaurants to be pushy in refilling your glass in the hopes of selling a second bottle but in this instance we were trusted to pour our own wine which at £12.90 for a bottle of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc was no hardship. The bill was exactly £50 for two including the wine and we would have been hard pressed to fit in another morsel. If you're passing through Whittlesey give it a go before the locals catch on. Why they haven't done so already is a real mystery.

We went quite late on a Saturday night but they were happy to fit us in. The young waiter was utterly charming. We had the set menu B. The food was absolutely outstanding. The prawn toasts had been properly made, with good chunks of prawns. Not that deep fried mush most places serve. The sizzling steak was genuinely one of the best things I've ever eaten. It melted in the mouth. We will absolutely definitely go here again.

Wife and I went on the off-chance early evening to find the place already half full,,,,normally a good sign.

We were greeted at the door and shown to our seats promptly. Fantastic service throughout from the young waiter, beautiful food and we were treated like individuals. Some of the party commented that this was the best Chinese food they'd ever eaten and I think the empty plates were proof of that.

We visited here on a whim after reading some good reviews on TripAdvisor and were not disappointed! Amazing food, lovely friendly service and since then we have returned with friends and as a couple and will continue to! For a very small little business it's One of the best Chinese restaurants we have visited. Up there with Dubai!

This place is a little gem! It is not a big restaurant but the intimacy is nice. The food is outstanding and good sized portions. This was our first visit on recommendation and we are looking forward to our next visit!

Out on friday night , surprised it wasnt busier , not complaining though , 1st time since it opened from change of owners. friendly service, good food ,we had set menu as we all love the duck . Not disappointed .we shall definitely return

Last minute decision as bank holiday sunday and fancied meal out.

This is our first time eating at the restaurant and we were very pleasantly surprised. We've been hunting around for a good Chinese restaurant for a while with no luck but we are very glad to have found this one.

We were Looking forward to visiting the mandarin for some time, what a dissapointment, food was unexciting, very bland, in fact absolutely flavourless, atmosphere no better, will not be back.

Having lived in Hong Kong for 3 yrs I can be very fussy about Chinese restaurant. This evening I visited with my son. His first ever visit to a Chinese. Wow great service and fantastic food. I have not eaten such a great Chinese meal in a very long time. Even better that my son loved every mouthful.

Recently visited with a group of 6 other for a birthday meal and they were very friendly and able to get us in at short notice. Couldnt fault the food and the staff were very friendly and helpfull. Definitely be visiting again!

Simply the best Chinese meal I have had for a long time in Whittlesey! Eat in or takeaway only no delivery....service spot on food ace! Very reasonable prices....a must try

Despite having a voucher for four free meals the food we were served was of a very high quality. There were 3 courses each of which were thoroughly enjoyed by all of us. The waiting staff were very friendly and the food was served quite quickly. The starter consisted of prawn toast, spare ribs and seaweed. One small criticism was that the spare ribs were rather fatty and not the best I have tasted. The second course was Peking duck which was excellent and the third course of sweet and sour chicken, king prawns, sizzling steak and rice was also of the highest quality.

Went here with family, please note it's not massive inside so you need to book early if you want a table. Apparently, it went downhill recently, but the old owner/manager is back and so is the quality and service. It's not as good as my local Chinese, but that is exceptional, but I still rate it as very very good and certainly worth visiting. Food quality is there, service good. Try it.

We went to this restaurant some years ago when it was the Hong Kong Garden, and under different management. It wasn't very nice. Having heard a few good reports about the Mandarin, we went last night and as far as we are concerned, the good reports were well founded. Service was excellent from start to finish, and the food was superb. I can recommend the deep fried wanton and duck in lemon sauce! Prices are very reasonable, and that goes for the wine list too. We'll definitely be making the Mandarin a regular place on our calendar, as there us much more to sample on their menu.

Perfect service and food. We only had 40 minutes break during Whittlesey Straw Bear and we were served hot tasty food promptly and with courtesy. 16 hungry Morris Dancers were well fed and watered. No real ales as we expected but good Chinese bottled beer. Spotless toilets.

We had a very enjoyable meal last night for a birthday celebration. The food was delicious especially the crispy fried won tons and the Singapore rice. The service was good and the meal was good value for money. We will definitely be going again.

This premises has been a Chinese restaurant under different ownership with varying degrees of success....we visited recently under its newest incarnation recently reopened....we went on an early Saturday evening and received a very warm welcome the staff overall were excellent we had four courses in total (separate duck course) and they didn't disappoint.....the food quality was superb the crispy duck was stand out ..,but all of the courses were excellent the surroundings are pleasing on the eye and food works out value for money ....we will use again I hope these owners can make the place work highly recommended

Went with 2 friends - never been before but was not disappointed. The food was delicious, piping hot with huge portions. It was almost full when we arrived but we were not rushed and at the end of the meal as we were just sat chatting we were offered free coffee. Everywhere looked spotless and the staff were polite. Would have no hesitation in going back.
