Great staff and wonderful food. We highly recommend this place.

Found it very cramped for space and expensive

I wish we lived closer to York, we would go here more often. There is absolutely nothing about this place not to like. The staff are extremely friendly and service is very attentive, the food is amazing and the atmosphere is perfect for what you would expect from an authentic Italian restaurant. Everyone enjoyed the food from every course and it all looked, smelled and tasted fantastic. When attending a restaurant with children that sometimes find it hard to sit at a table. Some restaurant don't like it. But the staff were extremely kind and welcoming. I would have absolutely no reservations about returning there in the future and would definitely recommend the place to anyone in the area.

Lovely food. Some tables are too noisy, but staff were happy to move us to a more suitable table.

Great Italian food in a lovely family run restaurant. Friendly service and happy to have a chat or share a joke with you. I would recommend the pizza garlic bread for starters. The ham calzone is very nice, but I do wish they had a chicken option as well. Also the cheesecake is heavenly so save a little space for it.

I haven't even eaten the main course but the mussels, bread and butter, and calamari were spectacular 🤩🤩 so authentic. I love the atmosphere and the staff are so lovely. Ordered two pizzas which I know will definitely not disappoint. Much love xx

Recientemente visitamos a Mamma Mia la semana pasada con la familia. Esta es nuestra cuarta vez en este restaurante y cada vez la comida y el servicio ha sido fantástico. El personal es increíble y muy amable. Nos sirvió el encantador Rafael y muy divertido George (¿creemos, posiblemente Josh? ¡Disculpe si tenemos el nombre equivocado! También hablamos con uno de los gerentes al final de nuestra comida que era tan encantador y amable. Lamentamos no haber encontrado su nombre. Nuestra comida era increíble. Teníamos los ravioles de langosta para empezar y una variedad de platos de pasta y pizza para la red. Todos estaban deliciosos y cocinados a la perfección. Luego disfrutamos de postres y nos ofrecieron chupitos de limencello de cortesía antes de salir. El ambiente del restaurante es genial y realmente se siente como si pudiera estar en Italia! Hay una gran sensación familiar en la forma en que se dirige el lugar y el personal no podría ser más agradable o servicial. Esperamos visitar de nuevo y recomendaría este restaurante a cualquiera.

Really good food and lovely waiters/waitresses. Only very very minor thing was as was sat in the middle of the room but definitely recommend. - Garlic Pizza bread starter serves as a main. - Allergies were asked for and met.

I have just finished one of the best Italian meals I’ve ever had in Mamma Mia. The food, portion sizes, service, and everything else was perfect. I will be returning to York in July and will certainly be returning to this restaurant. It has been a wonderful end to a really lovely holiday. To the owner and everyone else who works in there - thank you.

Tuvimos una comida encantadora en Mamma Mia! Los entrantes fueron buñuelos de setas y gambas tigre. Bonitas porciones generosas. Luego ambos tuvimos el mismo Pollo especial diario (pollo) Verónica - muy agradable de hecho, y de nuevo una buena ayuda. Tan generoso que decidimos no tener un desierto también, ya que nos sentíamos un poco llenos y no pudimos terminar la comida principal! Pero logramos terminar el vino - Chianti Classico, que también era bastante agradable. El personal era amable, todos los demás comensales en el restaurante parecían contentos con sus comidas también. En general una noche muy agradable y volveremos si visitamos York de nuevo. Ambos estamos de acuerdo en que era una buena elección de restaurante. No habíamos reservado una mesa, pero se las arreglaron para encajarnos. Era una visita de mitad de semana en enero, pero muchas mesas terminaron ocupadas, así que sospecho que reservar una mesa con antelación sería necesario en toda la temporada turística, debido a su obvia y merecida buena reputación.

Mamma Mia is a fantastic restaurant, with really great food and very nice, friendly staff. Booking a table was super straightforward, and the team at Mamma Mia went out of their way to make sure that my girlfriend had a wonderful birthday celebration. 10/10, would recommend!

Hemos estado en Mamma Mia dos veces en las últimas semanas para una comida pre-teatral, una en pareja y otra en familia con nuestro hijo de 7 años. Hemos tenido una experiencia encantadora en ambas ocasiones - la comida y el servicio era excelente cada vez, y fue genial que tenían un menú para niños también, lo que nos hizo la vida mucho más fácil. No puedo creer que nunca hayamos estado allí en todo el tiempo que hemos vivido en York y sus alrededores, ¡pero definitivamente lo elegiríamos de nuevo! Está perfectamente situado para York Theatre Royal, a menos de cinco minutos a pie de la esquina.

Soy discapacitado y tenía una reserva en el bloque de corte que ofrecen comedor para discapacitados abajo. No nos dimos cuenta de que esto significaba una mesa en el pub donde nos sentaríamos junto a una mesa de billar rota y una extraña silla de pastiche de plástico azul. Habríamos sido los únicos comensales en esta parte de lo que parecía un pub muy “local”. El personal aquí era encantador, pero decidimos irnos. Luego descubrimos lo difícil que es conseguir una mesa en acSatirday noche. Finalmente conseguimos una mesa en Mamma Mia y tuvimos un tiempo encantador - el personal era tan atento y nada era demasiado problema y la comida era hermosa y fresca. Había una camaradería maravillosa entre el personal, la mayoría de los cuales hablaba italiano - lo único que lo haría aún mejor sería la iluminación del estado de ánimo o velas en la mesa. Definitivamente volveré.

Llegó lo suficientemente temprano para conseguir una mesa sin reserva ya que parece muy popular. Excelente comida y servicio. El medio litro de tinto de la casa era muy bueno y el affogato con un licor era suficiente para el postre ya que la red era muy llena.

Visitó a Mamma Mia como un grupo familiar de 4. Después de haber estado antes, aunque hace mucho tiempo, confiaba en que aún sería excelente. No podría fallar nada. Maravillosa comida y sabroso vino. Lo que aparta este lugar es el servicio. Absolutamente de primera clase. El equipo no puede hacer lo suficiente por ti. Un italiano auténtico encantador y ligeramente alejado del turismo, teniendo partes de York para más lugareños. Lo recomiendo!

Booked for a party of 12 people. The food all arrived at the same time, was delicious and the staff were superb. Will definitely return.

In our 17 day tour of the United Kingdom, this was the memorable restaurant in terms of the dinner we ate. From the moment you arrive, you get a nice dose of Italian hospitality. The food was nothing less than exceptional. From the fresh and warm Italian bread, to the calamari, to the pasta with prawns and asparagus, the meal exceeded our expectations. Then for desert, the tiramisu, cannolis and limoncello made it difficult for us to move! Wish we had stayed longer in York.

One of the best Italian restaurants we have ever had the pleasure to enjoy. Daily special of Seafood risotto and Grilled chicken, followed by Tiramisu - all were amazing.

Great restaurant for group booking or a simple table for two. We often have a table for two here, however this time Mamma Mia hosted a work reunion dinner for 17 of us. I worked with Jane to organise a drink on arrival followed by individuals ordering their own food and drink. The food and service as always was excellent. The bonus was that as it was a lovely evening we were able to make use of their stunning garden at the back. Food and drink are very well priced. We had a great evening. Everyone loved it. It was perfect. Thank you.

We were recommended by guests at our hotel & we weren't disappointed. The food was amazing. The staff were so friendly & eager to please. We loved the intimate feel of the restaurant which was managed by a lovely couple. We will definitely return.

Staff member from our hotel (Churchill) recommended that we should try this restaurant and glad he did, we visited the last Friday in June without a reservation (recommend you reserve) and staff gave us one of the last remaining tables, the young waiter (studying in Edinburgh) was really friendly, our main meals were absolutely delicious and the lady front of house recommended our deserts glad she did chocolate cake for my wife and Apple pie for myself which was so good, prices were good overall hopefully we can visit again

Went to York for a weekend away and found Mamma Mia’s as we were walking into the centre on our first evening. What a great little find, a little taste of Italy! Great food, great service, house red was a very pleasant surprise, all in all very good meal and at a decent price. So good, we went back on our second night just to prove the first night wasn’t a fluke. Second night was better! Well worth a mention if you are looking for a little piece of Italy, you won’t be disappointed. The next time we are in York we will definitely be back for another dose of Italy

We wanted a genuine Italian dinner out. We thought we had traveled there, and we were instantly immersed in the hospitality, the atmosphere, and the embrace of the Italian culture! Dinner. Loved the food, great flavors, served piping hot. Good service. House red was OK, nothing to write home about. We had the Ravioli and the Pollo Veronica, both very nice. The Burrata starter was great. Best meal we've had in a while here (UK).

On a recent weekend away in York we came across an Italian Restaurant, Mamma Mia, 20 Gillygate. We had a genuine Italian experience in quaint surroundings and recommend the staff highly for their customer service. The menu was ideal for us and we were not disappointed when the food arrived on our table. Excellent Chicken Michelangelo and a tasty Salmon pasta dish with a Garlic Bread Burrata side. We can recommend Mamma Mia!

Popped in here on recommendation of a local friend, and really glad we did, as best meal we had during our 3 night stay in York. Warm welcome, and all staff friendly and helpful. Between us we had a pasta and a salmon with vegetables main courses, and both were excellent; tasty and not too heavy. I struggle to find a desert I can eat in Italian restaurants, as usually very creamy (tiramisu, panna cotta) but in addition they also had an apple tart which was excellent. Close to Bootham Bar city gate, 5 mins walk from York Minster. Would definitely return, and York has literally hundreds of pubs and restaurants.

Awesome little Italian restaurant right in York. Went for the location but the food was outstanding. Best Ravioli I have ever had outside of Italy. Our server George was great. Highly recommend this spot.

I went to this restaurant in 1987 whilst a student in York, I remember the lovely garlic pizza bread and superb meals here. Now returned 37 years later to find its run by the same couple and equally delicious. A real rare treat.

Amazing food and amazing service, I never got the old chaps name that waited on us but he was lovely, a real friendly gentleman , it was nice to meet him and the other staff were very attentive, the main guy on the till was great too and offered us another free lemon chello but we were dashing for a bus, we enjoyed our visit and will be back, thanks Neil and Cayla

This place was recommended by someone so thought we’d give it a try! Greeted by staff who aloud us to choose where we sat! The decor and atmosphere was so authentic! The food spoke for itself! Authentically superb! The staff were so friendly, professional from the Chef to the to the wait staff (especially the Lovely Lucy!) The only thing that let it down was an older Man (employer) addressing staff unkindly! But everything else Superb! Worth a visit in York!!!

We have eaten here many times. A bustling friendly Italian restaurant with good food a good value. Pizzas in the past have been excellent but this time we went for other options and enjoyed them. Lasagne, spaghetti and aubergine were all very good. Service is friendly. Management clearly wants to provide a good experience. Will come again.

Our first night in York and we came across Mama Mia via Google Reviews. It was only a short walk from where we are staying and from the moment we entered till the moment we left, the staff made us welcome and treated us like we were old friends. We ordered the sharing platter for one and Parmagiana Melazane as starters and the Vesuvio and Quatro Stagionne Pizzas as our mains. All our dishes were delicious and presented beautifully and professionally. We were too stuffed to try dessert but got given limoncellos after our coffees. Would we go again. ABSOLUTELY!!!! ❤️

Had family meal(mam,dad,two daughters 17,11) on New Year's Eve, after reading good reviews on local website. Very surprised to find no chicken pasta dishes on main menu. My chicken/mushroom risotto was the worst I've had in a restaurant-small portion for £12.50,overcooked rice, roughly cut chicken, no herbs, tasted of chicken soup-really bad. Daughter's lasagne was overheated, lacking in beef, tasted like ready meal and in my opinion, should've come with chips and salad. Wife had calamari starter costing £9.50.For me this entitles you to a better garnish/salad than 1 slice each of cucumber, tomato,lemon, a lettuce leaf and a single piece of parsley in a little corner of the plate. Children's meal was a decent Margherita pizza and soft drink. The place feels authentic Italian but it's all about the food and on the whole we were very disappointed.We are not Italian but cook our own Italian food at home and it's much better than this.I feel angry enough to write this review as I don't appreciate paying good money for food that's been cooked without care and thrown on the plate in small amounts. It's why I'm really going off eating out. Polite service from all the staff is not enough at all. Finally, I've also got to say the Men's room was authentic - 1950's style, not clean. Don't enjoy doing this but also, don't like being ripped off. Didn't express my opinion on the night as we had kids with us but Mr chef, your risotto was spazzatura!

Our family had a wonderful meal here this week. Lovely food, friendly service and a lovely ambience. Enough vegetarian options to offer too. I would definitely recommend Mamma Mia.

We were walking around York looking for somewhere to eat on Saturday night, and came upon this delightful authentic Italian restaurant. Staff very friendly, especially the older gentleman. We order 2 starters to share and a main each, all food came out well presented, piping hot and freshly cooked. We will be back when we next visit York.

Still very nice but as good as the first time. The calzone was less flavoursome and a little light on ham. Tasted a bit like a takeaway pizza. On the other hand the profiteroles were amazing and the ingredients were good quality. Portion size was not disappointing. Service was not quite on par.

Hotel recommended this restaurant and we were pleased they did. Garlic bread with tomato was excellent. Really thin base. I had a risotto which was delicious with big chunks of chicken. Hubby had arribiatta and while spicy also hit the spot. Lovely traditional restaurant.

Excellent quality, we had 3 course, house wine and cafe espresso. Couldn't fault any of it. Service was very good too. Happy with price. Good value for money. We liked the dishes we were served because they weren't swimming in cream and sauce. One could taste the food.

We had the most delicious meal here this evening. A completely authentic Italian restaurant. The food was delicious and although totally full, we were able to enjoy the cannoli in our hotel room! I think this is a hidden treasure just beyond the range of all the tourist traps.

Een 'ouderwetse' pizzeria waar het interieur de afgelopen 30 niet veranderd is. De kwaliteit van de pizza's was voortreffelijk. Er zat wat troep op de bodem van onze karaaf. Toen we er wat van zijden kregen we meteen nieuwe wijn.

Our long-standing favourite family restaurant in York is back up and running as well as ever after the ups and downs of COVID. Congratulations to Nando and the whole team, many of whom are new, as are parts of the menu. A true hearty Italian, wonderful service, wonderful ambiance, Nicol the Chef from Italy is literally the best Chef you will find, native to Bari, beautiful Italian home cooked food! We WILL be back!

Excellent food, well presented and absolutely delicious. Everything we ordered was cooked to perfection ! The portion sizes for the starters were the same as mains , huge. house wine was recommended and was very nice, the chef here really knows what he is doing, it's all authentic Italian food, the service is very professional yet warm and personal, the desserts were also absolutely delicious. 5 stars from us and we shall definitely be back.
