Visited Mama Calabar in Hendon yesterday with my family. The food was great and the owner was a most humane and welcoming woman. She came to our table, greeted us and thanked us profusely for our patronage. That little gesture of customer service to us placed her above her competitors. Will be visiting soon without doubt

The food & its variety are great, & it's the sort of unpretentious place an old friend would be glad to take you to. There's a bit of "sticker shock" but then again, I think in Dollars & not in Pound Sterling so that might have something to do with it. Oh, & the chef came out to check on our food & satisfaction.....that doesn't hurt.

I've been to this restaurant several times in all locations, Henson, Wembley and now Edgeware, and the food has remained consistently one of the best 9ja joints in London and UK. Whilst the pepper soup, suya, edikaikon, egusi and jollof are as good as they've always been, and highly recommended, and the service is helpful, the atmosphere was lacking with no afrobeats (and a struggle to find some to play)....nonetheless, it remains great food but they could do so much more if they just tried a little harder.

This restaurant is actually run as a restaurant, not just as a place where people who know how to cook can come and eat. The food was absolutely delicious and the servers were kind. The ambience is average and the plating is good. The spiciness is top-notch. However, the food is extremely pricey for reasons unknown to me. Also, I ordered the small size of a meal and was only informed after waiting for twenty minutes that the small was unavailable and I had to pay for the medium size. Things like this really cut into the service quality.

Getting local food when you are far from home ... nothing beats it. The food is always awesome and fresh. However, the new location appears far, seemingly farther than their former Wembley location. Bearing the cost of delivery may be steep for some folks.

If mama calabar wants to succeed in the restaurant business, a lot of improvement has to be made in the area of cooking. They have a good place, for me, the food was not just good enough.

I have been here 2 times as a friend knows the owner. The meal takes ages and then waiters encourage that we wait for "small chops". Basically food that is served after 11.30 ish that is over priced. £10 for a small container of gizzard and you don't even want to know the price of the fish. The waiters know the food but tell you there is a long wait but with such bored looks, I did not even care to bother them. Crammed 2 cubicle loo that is not cleaned and people standing over you, continuously asking when you are leaving....... begging to get out of the seat so they can sit down. I would rather go to Burnt Oak and visit Ariyo or Lekki and get a takeaway!!!

We were having guests from outside the UK and for entertainment they requested something African, Well, being a West Londoner we thought we will give 'Mama Calabar' a visit. First time on a Friday evening and then after much persuasion we tried a Saturday night as well. On both occasions I found the experience most disappointing. The waiters and waitresses were not friendly and visibly not interested in the job. Their product knowledge was also very poor (the waiters who attended to us had no idea what drinks they had on offer). Service was extremely slow or non-existent as we found out on the Saturday when our order for starters went missing. We had to cancel of course only to find out that the main dish was at least another hour's wait. This venue has a good decor and is blessed with space. The space however is very under-utilized as on the Saturday there were hardly any customers, pretty dead and no atmosphere. Such a contrast to the Friday where on the other hand we could not even hear ourselves 'think' due to the volume of the music being pumped by a DJ. Apparently Friday night is Clubnight - wish someone could have told us before we were seated. 'Clubnight'? I thought Mama Calabar was a restaurant. My biggest gripe?: THIS PLACE IS VERY OVER PRICED. The food was simply average, I've had great African food at less than half Mama Calabar's prices. It looks to me the management is trying to run this place on the cheap and could do better by investing in their staff and providing a good African experience for their clients. My guests would have certainly loved that but instead what they got was just another regular restaurant with the only distinguishing feature of serving African dishes. We will not be going back there anytime soon.

If you fancy Nigerian cousin, this is the place to go, of the various Nigerian restaurants in London this must be the best. Here you n ot only get the special dishes also local beer like Gulder, Star and the Guinness with the yellow label. I had a suja of beef + plantain for starter then moved on to fried chicken with jalof rice. It holds the standard you expect good homemade stuff. Also the service is Nigerian so it took 40 mins to get the starter, however an excuse to have another beer, another waiting period for the mains and this was on Thursday with few people, so God knows hows like on Fri/Saturday..... Fri - Saturday they run a disco on one corner...... and dance floor always full after midnight, just like Lagos!!!
