£4.80 for a reasonably good hot cross bun and doughnut. Felt like a doughnut paying that price. This was years ago so by now it must be a mortgage payment or more for a grain or badly made grub. So much for 1 a penny 2 a penny... 😅 Lots of beer brewers too for the salty sip lovers. Lots of excuses from the market saying this post isn't related to them, but it is, they are heavily overcharging.

A hidden gem tucked away in a series of railway arches and cobblestone streets just a stone's throw from the iconic Tower Bridge. As you wander through the market's narrow alleyways and bustling lanes, your senses will be tantalized by the sights, sounds, and smells of culinary creativity in full swing. From the sizzle of grills and the aroma of freshly baked bread to the vibrant colors of seasonal produce and the laughter of fellow food lovers, this street market is a feast for the senses from start to finish. Food stalls line the streets, offering an enticing array of options to satisfy every craving and palate. These are a few of our favourite/recommended vendors: 1. Mooncheese Toasties: One of the signature offerings is their truffle toastie, featuring a decadent blend of melted cheese infused with earthy truffle oil, nestled between slices of artisanal bread and grilled to golden perfection. The result is a rich and indulgent sandwich that delights the senses with its aromatic truffle aroma and creamy, melty goodness. 2. Comptoir Gourmand Maltby: known for its exquisite French pastries, artisanal breads, and delectable sweet treats. This charming bakery captures the essence of a traditional French patisserie, offering a wide range of freshly baked goods, from flaky croissants and buttery pain au chocolat to delicate éclairs. 3. Steak & Chips: a selection of steak options, including ribeye, sirloin, and fillet, each one expertly seasoned and grilled over an open flame (to their preferred level of doneness), allowing them to develop a delicious charred crust while retaining their juicy tenderness on the inside. In addition to its food, it also boasts a selection of independent retailers selling a variety of goods, from handmade jewelry and vintage clothing to homeware and artwork. It's a treasure trove of unique finds, where you can discover hidden gems and support local artisans while exploring the market's charming surroundings. The atmosphere at Maltby Street Market is lively, convivial, and quintessentially London. Whether you're enjoying a leisurely brunch with friends, picking up picnic provisions for a day out, or simply soaking in the vibrant ambiance with a cup of artisanal coffee in hand, it offers an unforgettable experience that captures the essence of London's diverse and dynamic food scene.

The pasta is incredibly fresh and perfectly cooked, and the range of seafood - octopus, mussels, squid, whelks - we had was uniformly great. The grilled octopus was a stand out dish for me and it’s definitely a place I’d revisit on special occasions.
