So the food was amazing but I left a bit frustrated as when the waiter brought me my plum wine it fell off the tray, spilling all over the table and my clothes. I couldn’t have been nicer as accidents Happen, I was hoping because I was going to be wet for the rest of the day that I would at least be discounted for the meal however not only was I charged full price but he was cheeky enough to add on a £5 service charge. I don’t think I’ll be going back now, not to that one anyways

Not the establishment it once was. Have chosen quantity over quality. Real shame.

Amazing food, perfect cook and taste

Today was my first visit here and it definitely won't be my last. The staff were all so professional but friendly, nothing was too much trouble. The food was absolutely 5 star, could not fault a thing. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for great food, great staff an amazingly welcoming atmosphere.

I'm giving 5 stars in fairness because I found my spicy fried chicken really incredible! The cocktails are also perfectly made. On the other hand, as for the service, it really wasn't that: unpleasant waitress, my friend had finished her dish before I received mine, and what's more, there was an error on the bill. That's a lot... no point in reviewing!

About the food, nothing to complain about, it was incredibly good! On the other hand, not a very warm welcome and service to be reviewed. In fact, I received my ramen even though our cocktails had not yet arrived. I had time to finish my ramen before my boyfriend received his chicken and rice... In short, we have to review the order of priority of things: first the drinks and then start the dishes and prepare them so that the table receives everything at the same time! And the icing on the cake: error in the bill, we were given a double dish. Fortunately, no hassle with reimbursement. It's a shame to have had this experience because I really enjoyed it and I still advise you to try all these little dishes and cocktails, because everything is delicious.

I’m on holiday in Edinburgh and decided to try this restaurant, if you can even call it that. It was, without exaggeration, one of the most disappointing and frustrating dining experiences of my life. I came here with my young child and husband, hoping for a pleasant meal. We don’t eat meat, so I ordered a vegan ramen and made that clear. But, just two minutes later, a bowl arrived—with pork in it! It was obvious it wasn’t freshly made; it seemed likely to have been a returned dish from another customer. When my actual order finally came 20 minutes later, my suspicions were confirmed. That first bowl was simply pulled from somewhere in the back and served to me at random. Still, I stayed calm. But then, while we waited for our food, the same server came over and asked to take my order again, having completely forgotten that I had already ordered. Mistakes happen, so I let it go. Then came the issue with my son’s food. I specifically ordered veggie gyoza for him, yet they brought out chicken gyoza. I told the server, who took it back, only for another staff member to approach and insist it was actually “soy chicken.” I know the difference between chicken and soy, and this was most definitely not soy! They assured me they would bring a new batch, but it never came. After I asked again, they admitted they only had deep-fried gyoza, not the steamed ones we ordered. At that point, it was almost laughable. My son ended up having to share my ramen because he was left without his own food. When the waiter came by again to ask how everything was, I calmly but honestly explained how disappointed I was. She apologized and said she’d take care of our bill—but in a tone that made it sound as if we were after a free meal, which was very insulting ! My husband and I insisted on paying, as we don’t want a free meal; we simply wanted decent service. The ramen itself was actually good, which makes it even more disappointing that the experience was so terrible. The red flags started from the moment we walked in. The host was cold and unwelcoming, handing us the menus at the entrance as if they were flyers. This is not how customers should be treated, especially when they have a child in tow. We travel often and eat at a variety of restaurants, from casual to high-end, and this is, by far, the worst experience we’ve ever had. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. Avoid it if you want a positive dining experience in Edinburgh.

When it’s cold outside this is a great option for some hearty, warm and comforting ramen. Everything was delicious. I wish I could eat more but I was too full. The garlic ramen is very special and yummy.

We had a late dinner at Maki&Ramen. The food was good, however, the service was unpleasant. We were told that the last order was taken at 21:30. We wanted to make an order before 21:30, but we felt like an inconvenience for them. We heard both the chefs and the waiters COMPLAIN about us ordering at 21:27. We know - a bit annoying, but when you say last orders are taken before 21:30 then that is what we expect? We spent 67 pounds on a casual Thursday dinner. In and out quickly. Waiters were cold and silent towards us when we paid. We said thank you, but no thank you back. Are you sure that you want your customers to come back to your restaurant? Then this is not how to do it.

By Japan standards this is a good TONKOTSU RAMEN, a 4 out of 5, Not quite al dente. Price seems to be standard.

One of our favourite lunch spots. The lunch deal is really good value for a starter and main, we got the teriyaki chicken/ gyoza as starters and hell ramen for the main. The chicken was moist and well flavored and the hell ramen was satisfyingly spicy- portions were big and we couldn't finish it all! Service was quick and cheerful.

Superb address. After finding the small canal, arrived by chance at this restaurant. A fabulous discovery where the ramen (Tonkatsu in my case) is excellent!!! If you are in Edinburgh and want to eat a good ramen, taking this little detour from the center is well worth it!!!

Great restaurant, the ramen is super good. Sushi too. Be careful for some bring back, it is written that it is not spicy. However, it stung well.

Really good black garlic ramen, great gyoza!

The waitresses got our drink and food orders wrong and got mad when we told them. When they came out with the food order the second time it was still wrong but at that point we just gave up. They took plates off our table before we finished eating and gave us ugly stares from the bar. Honestly I’ve never experienced such bad service in my life! It gave mean girl energy!

The food is delicious and that’s where it ends. You’re rushed from the door. There will be almost always someone checking if there are empty plates so they can give you the bill. McDonalds feels slow compared to this. Not coming any time soon.

We were sick all night, and it was very good that we had PILLS and did not have to call an AMBULANCE. The toilets in the restaurant were very dirty and no one cleaned them, it seems that someone had experienced the power of ramen earlier. I wonder what happened to all the visitors of the establishment? Do not recommend, suggest to avoid from now

Yesterday we had dinner at this restaurant. I would like to mention that we go to Maki Ramen quite often. However, yesterday the service was terrible: I waited 15 minutes to order wine, and the Asian girl said, “Yes, now,” but never came. It didn’t really bother my friends and me, as we were chatting. Then we went down to the women’s toilet, which was completely covered in faeces, so I had to use the men’s toilet. Question: can’t you clean the toilets? This should have alerted us, as it was likely someone here was feeling unwell. And yes, our friends got very sick during the night. When I woke up, I saw messages from them saying they had stomach aches, couldn’t sleep, had been poisoned, and were about to call an ambulance. We will never come to you again. Thank you for showing us how bad it can be.

Very nice and reasonably priced place for good ramen in a very busy area of Edinburgh. Our server was excellent and paid attention to us - sadly I forgot to get his name.

When you enter a restaurant at the entrance you are greeted with a drum beat and a special phrase (hopefully it means something good). The first thing you notice is a rather strong smell (I would describe it as the smell of dirty socks, but eventually you get used to it quickly). I was seated at a table for two against the wall, one of the waiters was walking quite quickly around the hall, so every time he passed by us our table was shaking. The order came quite quickly. So far it was the best ramen I've ever had, other dishes were not worse tempura prawns 10/10.

Food was banging! Katsu curry was 👌 nice quick service as well

Had a great checking out Maki & Ramen! On a cold fall day, it was just what we needed! The atmosphere was nice and comfortable, the servers were friendly and fairly prompt and our food came out quickly! We tried the pork gyoza, chicken ramen, rainbow roll, as well as the salmon and prawn nigiri! All of which were really good! This was a nice, pleasant surprise for the night! While we didn’t try any of their drinks, they had a great looking Mocktails section as well!

Came to Edinburgh for a conference. This was just up the road from my hotel. Food was amazing....the tonkotsu ramen was delicious and just what I needed on an autumn night. The gyoza were also really lovely...I think I went a bit overboard ordering edamame aswell!!! If I have no plans tomorrow I might just come back!!

Maki & Ramen has lost so much since it first opened. Me and my partner went here today and we will definitely not be back. First of all the food is below par compared to when it opened. We both got ramen and noticed that you only get 2 pieces of meat instead of 3 bits even though it is now almost £15 each. The pumpkin croquettes had no presentation, and instead of kewpie mayo just a spoonful of cheap mayo. They no longer do pork gyozas either. Also the cleanliness is dreadful. As soon as you walk in, there is an air conditioning unit thick in dust. Next to that are 2 baby highchairs that look like they have never seen a cloth. The seats we were at had dirty everywhere. The menus had food splatters on them. And then to top it off the toilets are revolting. I genuinely don't know if they even have a cleaner, they where that bad. We are both so disappointed in Maki & Ramen

The food is barely okay, but not good value for money. Ramen has a lot of noodles and barely any meat. After sushi and ramen I was still hungry, I had to go somewhere else to get some meat. I have visited many Asian restaurants and this restaurant is subpar. Automatic service charge of 10% is silly. I am happy to leave some tips when I have a choice. Here they automatically decide for you.

A bit feeling at home when being away from home. Really nice food, even if in Düsseldorf the Japanese kitchen is more exact and paying attention to detail. Gyoza would - for example - be more fried and Edamame not overcooked. However, we are in UK, so we were quite happy. I'd liked to have a gotten a clear indication though, that 10% service charge is already included when the bill arrives. For me it was a bit too tiny small print.

The ramen is spectacular, one of the richest I've ever tried. But the chicken is not karaage, it has a normal frying that is quite soft and greasy. And the shame is that they forgot two dishes and brought them to us late.

Great place for a casual lunch. Food excellent.

This place is terrific! We stopped in for an early dinner without a reservation, because it didn’t seem like the kind of place where a reservation is needed. Turns out, reservations are not mandatory, but they are a good idea if you’d like to get in without a wait. We’ve had ramen in a lot of places in the world, and we did not expect to find great ramen in Scotland. We found this to be among the best we’ve eaten anywhere, and - in particular - we found their vegetarian menu options to be both extensive and outstanding. On the downside, the tables are quite closely spaced, so this may not be the best place for a romantic dinner. We’ve already returned for another visit, and might hit it again before departing Scotland. Enjoy!

Probably the best ramen in Edinburgh! Chicken karaage ramen is my favourite, don't even have to see the menu, always delicious

Very kind staff and delicious food!! Good selection of vegetarian options (with enough protein, lots of extra tofu, very nice vegan bacon), and food came within half an hour even with 13 people at the table!

We visited after a trip to see a show at the Fringe. We booked, & we were seated very quickly. We had to ask for a drinks menu, & chop sticks, which I think were supposed to be on the table already. After ordering our drinks we ordered our food. I had the black garlic tonkotsu & my husband ordered the steak tataki. We ordered two side dishes, the chicken gyoza's & edamame beans. Sadly the side dishes didn't arrive until well after we'd eaten our mains & we were thinking about leaving. The tables are close together & we couldn't help but notice the couple on the table beside us didn't eat their meals together. (The man had eaten his meal & his friend still hadn't received hers, which finally arrived around 5 minutes after he'd finished his.) It was busy, but not full, so there was obviously a miscommunication between the kitchen & serving staff which affected us & the next table. The food was tasty, & reasonably good value. The staff were friendly & welcoming. Hopefully they can get their communication problem sorted very soon.

If the color beige opened a ramen shop, it would be just like this place. Spicy items on the menu had no spice, no heat, no flavor. The ramen broth likewise has no depth of flavor. It’s just bland.

Amazing place with great and fast service

Very good food and friendly staff. On the negative side, we didn't like receiving the cocktails (= aperitif) at the same time as all the food and paying for cocktails in which there was decidedly no alcohol 😅

Lovely shop & great japanese food. Can reserve ahead of time. Highly recommend the salmon ramen, chicken karage, soft shell roll & chicken katsu curry. I’ve tried their vegan miso ramen (i think) but it was not to my liking.

The salmon set is such a great idea: a little sashimi, nigiri, and salmon/avocado roll. Miso ramen with tofu is delicious! I love the chicken gyoza. Jack our server is the best!

Maki and Ramen was a pleasant discovery in Edinburgh! I tried a vegetarian dish, I don't remember the name exactly, but it was really good. It felt like I was really eating meat and instead… very delicate flavour, even the side sauce was super good. Prices are fairly normal, I paid around 15 pounds with service/cover charge included. I would definitely like to go back, the place is large and quite nice, but I haven't explored it much. Maybe next time

Had a quick dinner here eating sushi. Seems very popular place in monday evening in august - was only one table available. Sushi is definitely well done here, salmon was fresh and rice was properly done.

Black garlic ramen is a must-have! Wowwww, so good maybe my best ramen ever! Sushi is OK.

I came here last week with my girlfriend. She ordered the black garlic ramen with pork and the same evening, around 6 hours after eating, she got food poisoning. Looking at the photo now the meat looks off. Won’t return as it ruined her trip. I got the vegan version and I was fine luckily. I’m from Edinburgh and I have heard good things about Maki and Ramen but I am extremely disappointed.

Unbelievable Ramen and seared sushi. Gyoza are good too. Ramen has such rich broth, it might be the best I’ve ever had including in Japan

We have eaten here twice and both times the food was very good and the staff was friendly. It is also good to know that we ate there with a severe milk allergy and they took this into account very well.

My partner and I agreed that this was the best ramen we’ve had in such a long time!! We had the black garlic ramen and the spicy ramen. Thanks for a great time!

What a fantastic meal, the ramen I had was spot on, fresh and delicious and the drink selection was brilliant too. The vibe in the restaurant was lovely especially for a couples date with me and my partner. We had a fantastic seat at the window with service being fast and efficient. The servers were helpful and very hospitable throughout the experience. It was a great night and I highly recommend!!!

Everyone says the ramen is delicious, but when I tried the roll, it was so-so and very expensive. I guess I should have just had the ramen.

It is nice to see halal food in Edinburgh, it is clearly marked on the menu. The atmosphere and staff is warm and friendly. Loved the post-it notes on the walls.

My son had visited the Glasgow Maki & Ramen so suggested we booked this one when spending a day in the capital. We booked online for 7:30pm, we arrived early at 7pm hoping they could take us early, they couldn’t, so we went away and returned at our reservation time and was seated immediately. Service……. Very efficient and very friendly. Food, AMAZING! I asked for my dish less hotter (spicer) than it was supposed to be, this was no hassle at all. Restaurant, clean and tidy. Price, very reasonable, a 10% service charge is automatically added to your bill. If I had to find fault it would be the toilets, they weren’t the nicest. I would definitely go back and I would 100% recommend anyone in the area to try it if they haven’t already, you will not be disappointed.

Love it here , gave 5 at st james.. but lost a star as wanted a booth but couldn't get it as a staff member was using it.. there was actually 2 available but couldn't be bothered arguing..

Pretty decent spot for some no hassle Japanese food. It gets quite busy so definitely book but there are plenty of other branches available in the city. The menu seemed to have changed since I last went with less options but there are still plenty of ramen and sushi choices available.
