Had a lovely visit to Kenji Sushi. The food was mostly good. The taste of the tempura prawns was fantastic! The only downside to it was the size, we found it rather small compared to other places. Crunchy Ebi Roll was delicious. Crazy Tonkatsu Ramen was very good too. Chicken Katsu Don was alright but the rice was a bit hard. Service was pretty good. However, this place only accepts cash which was a bit of an inconvenience as they didn’t mention it on the booking! So, we had to walk to the nearest ATM.

If I could give six stars for the service, I would! My partner has shellfish allergy and when we told the staff, they made sure there was no cross contamination in our orders. It’s so difficult to find a place that cares about it, we felt really blessed. The food is very, very good! 10/10 the Crazy tuna roll and spicy salmon! Definitely recommend, but they only accept cash or bank transfer, so just find an ATM before going.

Restaurant is in lower floor, not big but can sit comfortably. Interior and seating is interesting. We had ramens. Food is ok, on salty side. Service was so so, don't expect much - the local looking waitress was slightly annoyed with my question on menu, we had to ask for wasabi for our sasemi - not too bad but basic. Paying parkings available are in front of the restaurant, free in the evening and on Sunday. Business takes cash only or bank transfer. Service charge 10% added automatically on bill - hate this hidden charge!

During our visit to Edinburgh, we attempted to dine at this restaurant but were deeply disturbed by the behavior of one of the staff members. We didn't have a reservation and tried to walk in, but the waitress gave us an incredulous look as if we shouldn't have even asked without a booking. Being Asian and craving some familiar food after days of steak and hamburgers, we inquired about the wait time. The waitress responded with visible anger and disdain, telling us it would be at least an hour. What shocked us even more was her treatment of a food delivery person who came in to check on an order. She angrily shut the door in their face. We were left speechless by this lack of basic decency. While we understand the pressures of busy hours, treating people with respect should always be a priority.

A repeat visit for us within space of two weeks as we enjoyed it so much the first time around and wanted to order more from the menu. It's a tiny restaurant and a bit rustic, these seats are not for people who want to spend 3 hours over dinner. Fine for 90 mins-2 hours, plenty time for trying several dishes. The sushi is great quality, love the chicken yakitori and tried the prawns on toast which have a delicious flavour. Tempura prawns are served with a dipping sauce that will have you reaching for the batter crumbs to dip, it's so tasty. It's a cash only restaurant, but if you forget, there's an ATM two minutes walk away on Raeburn Place.

Had fantastic food and service until it was time to pay. We were told to pay up as there was another party waiting for our table (this is common in Edinburgh now (sadly) so not such a big deal). We took out our debit cards and told it was cash only. We then asked if there was a cash point nearby and they said no but we could do a bank transfer! Folks, it's 2024 - a bank transfer at a restaurant?! So we were being stood over and rushed while frantically trying to connect to their wifi, do the bank transfer and with new party glaring at us as well as the servers. When we noted that we did not know there was a cash only policy, the server said there is a sign outside (it is a small wooden sign that could easily be missed) and it is stated in the email (well half the party never saw the email as the booking was made by one person). Will not be back.

I used to get regular takeaways from Kenji, but stopped because I was always kept waiting for between 25 and 45 minutes later than they had told me. I really fancied Japanese tonight, so I thought I'd try them again, and I'm really glad I did. My meal was ready at exactly the time they had promised, and the food was even tastier than it used to be. Plenty for vegetarians/vegans: a wonderful over-filled veg temaki full of lovely contrasting textures and freshness; good seaweed salad; nice crisp spicy tofu (I asked for them to go easy with the salt, which they did); and the best agedashi tofu ever, partly because the broth was exceptionally delicious, and partly because the tofu blocks had the lightest, crispiest coating, which they had very sensibly packed separately from the broth to avoid disintegration. The aubergine goma was a little bit too sweet, but still delicious. They forgot my garlic edamame, but they're refunding me next time I'm passing. Servings were generous, and prices very reasonable. I'm very, very happy.

As for the Ramen: I did like my crazy tonkotsu ramen. Good level of spicyness and nice broth. My partner in dinner found their shoyu ramen to be nothing amazing, but still a satisfying dinner. My only gripe is that they don’t accept card payement, was a hassle finding a machine and then having to police how much we could spend there, really hope they offer a form of electronic payment in the future, And my only other gripe was the wine being served in a tumbler, took away a lot of the flavours of the wine, But regardless of these the fish was fresh and the gyoza delicious

Pros: good selection of food, fairly authentic style down to the sticky tables and cash only payment, and quick service / food prep. Cons: cash only / bank transfer, small seating space, varied quality of dishes. Personal experience: I thought the food was average at best and varied quality. We had the crispy tofu, wasabi prawns, chirashi Don and karage chicken. Wasabi prawns were mild but tasty, the karage chicken was not crispy enough to be karage, the tofu was pretty dry, and my biggest sad moment was the chirashi Don. The rice was all separated, lacked flavour / wrong texture for sushi rice. There was a very small amount of fish on top too, and thinly cut pieces. I guess I’m spoilt having sushi Jun next to us which has the best sushi, and having lived in Japan you’ve got to find the ones that are up to scratch and my chirashi Don was not. Also Not a big fan of the pink ginger but that’s personal preference. Thanks for listening.

I spend a lot of time in Edinburgh and I am used to certain cuisines going badly wrong, compared to the US version. Japanese is usually humorously bad here. But Kenji would be a favorite if it were located in Fairfield Connecticut. Really excellent tempura, sushi that was fresh and delicious, and noodle soup bowls that were spot on. It’s funny that most US Japanese restaurants don’t do the ramen bowls but all Edinburgh Japanese places do. They are a great addition. Good service, passable decor (but avoid the awkward seats to the right of the door), reasonable prices by Connecticut standards, and really good food.

Beautifully decorated, menu informational and well presented. Ramen (4.5/5) was probably the best broth I’ve had in Edinburgh, could be in Japan, toppings were a slight let down, stingy size and light on variety, but the broth!! Nigiri (2.5/5) fish slice fresh but quite small, rice dry and unseasoned, overall dry and bland - Shame, as the variety was reasonable. Service (1/5) was sadly disinterested, going through the motions and for some reason decided to serve ramen before sushi 🤷‍♂️, interestingly, I heard his colleague ask table next to me if they were were finished with sushi and ready for noodles, so, maybe not an issue for everyone… Would return for Ramen, skip the sushi.

the only negatives are that it is very noisy and the payment is only in cash, the rolls are quite good, as is the ramen

Randomly found this spot in Google Maps and it didn’t disappoint! Everything we ordered was delish! Their Teriyaki Pork Rice Bowl, Tonkotsu Cha Shu Ramen, and their famous Hope Omuriso was yuuuuumyy! Asian craving was definitely satisfied. And the ambience of their place felt like we were in Japan.

I ate a lot by myself. The miso soup is served first, so it tends to get cold.
