I took my female friend for Cream Tea at Maison Bertaux a few days ago... at first it seems a touch ramshackle in the way it's furnished and staffed but it's the whole point as that was how it was when it opened in 1871 (prior to the (now closed) Patisserie Valerie so it's a real gem. We chose a table for two and were served by a friendly waiter wearing white shirt and navy apron so very smartly dressed✅ by the piano and had a large pot of loose leaf English Tea with scones, strawberry jam & clotted cream - WOW! Then we looked over the cake counter and choose almond & pear tart and a big cream cake with fruit accompanied by two glasses of cold prosecco - Fab!

We expected so much more from the oldest patisserie shop. We were sat downstairs in a dingy basement. Cakes were average. It was very chaotic and hard to have a look at cakes and pick. The tables were super close together and the overall decoration seemed odd, old and didn’t strike us as French patisserie shop. Cakes cost around £7. Would not come back. Seems like a tourist trap.

Scone was good, but nothing extra ordinary. Service was unwelcoming to rude by the aged lady. More focused on the touristee crowd of china town. We went early in the morning so area was not crowded, but at other time I can think of how busy it would get on the footpath, so can't sit out. Old lady kept warning guests to take care of their bags and to not keep the phones on the table. Enough for one time as it has high number of decemt reviews, just to find that they are from non-londeners.

The only bakery in Soho where the cakes are cooked daily on the premises. The window is just amazing and its nigh on impossible to not give in to temptation. Its a real Soho institution and now one of the few places that still retains that old Soho feel amongst the infiltration of the chain restaurants that are dull and sterile in comparison. I ordered 3 items, but 2 of them came out wrong. They brought it back to me, but the lid on the kettle they brought was replaced with another bowl. I don't think this was proper serving. The food was okay and the tea wasn't bad, but the tea leaves were put into the pot at once without separating them from the tea water, so the tea gradually became bitter and bitter.

Historical place for London as it is the first ever French patisserie in the capital. It's been here since 1871 and despite the changes it still holds a very independent and bohemian look with a very untidy hall, a few tables, crammed cakes and pastries. Take it as it comes as it is not a fine patisserie but the look will deceive you for the sweet food served is simple, delicate and low in sugar compared to English pastries, but still flavoursome. Worth stopping.

Scones were 5/5 with a tart like crust on the outside but soft and buttery inside. Get it with the obscene amounts of clotted cream and jam that could go on it. Paris brest was about a 4/5 because the hazelnut cream was sweeter than it was creamy. My wife loved the Dijon slice it was unique like pizza with Dijon bechamel on puff pastry. English breakfast tea was good paired with the scone but if you don't drink it fast enough it will be oversteeped. The atmosphere is pretty chaotic because of how busy they are but the service is lovely.

This long established institution has lost its way and is now a bit of a tourist trip I think. Do go if you are tied to ticking places of a list but best avoided in my opinion if you are wanting to eat quality fare. Save up a bit more money and go to a top quality hotel for a proper afternoon tea, that will be a better experience, and more genuine. The food is still baked on the premises but the products not a patch on real French patisserie. Any sweet treat is packed full of too much cream and the savoury items will get a generous sprinkling of whatever the staff and visitors pass out through their mouths! The idea that a French patisserie should offer scones, jam and cream is quite ridiculous. There was little attention to clearing and cleaning tables on my visit and one of the tables was taken up with a manager sitting with her friends talking loudly about how crazy it is that the two places tourists was to visit in London are Buckingham Palace and Maison Bertaux ! If you are visiting Europe and the UK and wish to try beautiful French patisserie products, wait until you get over the channel to the continent, they do it better there! And if you want a delicious scone with jam and cream, there are plenty of places that offer better that what I saw customers being served. Those around me who chose the lovely looking tarte aux fruits frais happily ate the fruit and left most of the rest. My chosen pastry was soggy, low on praline and high on poor quality cream, I left it and told the member of staff I paid that it was a very disappointing experience and that despite a fair number of previous visits that I will not visit again.

Prices aren’t cheap but more than fair for the location. Maison Bertaux is a Soho Institution, one of the last of its kind in London or anywhere elsewhere for that matter.
