Can’t believe it’s been about 25 years since we used to visit this restaurant weekly (my parents moved quite a way away so our routine and area changed) I had poppadom, prawn purée pilau rice and Chicken Shashlik it cost me about £20 so I thought that was a very good price. Really tasty great value for money very friendly staff atmosphere is lovely and I have got to say I’ll definitely be going back 🙏

The staff were very accommodating, warning me beforehand to book for an evening. When we arrived, we were quickly shown to a table, as it was early. When the restaurant became busier, another waiter appeared so service did not slow down!

Wow!! What a night. I got taken to this restaurant months ago by a friend and thought it was great. Food was fantastic, service pretty good. I went with a friend tonight and it was an absolute joke. I will start by saying the food was amazing, however the staff not so. We arrive at 9.15pm, wasn’t allowed to order a starter because they shut at 10pm. We ordered our main meal, but constantly got reminded that we need to be done by 10pm. The food came out, and it was great but at 10.15 was basically told to finish our drinks outside because they needed to close. I will visit again , but only to abuse the very rude waiter that served us . I look forward to seeing you again very soon, you extremely rude Indian chap 😉

A very good example of great tasting Indian food. I found this restaurant about a year ago and have used it ever since. The restaurant owner has been there since the 80’s! I had a chat with him one evening whilst waiting for my takeout. Proper old school decor - but nice really, The food itself is just really very tasty, each time we’ve ordered from there it has been the same, consistent, good food full of flavour. Not often I add reviews, but this one is worth the chatter!

We are regulars at Mahathma Tandoori, takeaways and eating in. The staff are always courteous. We miss the cloth napkins, which used to be a nice touch. The price is spot on, not the cheapest, but reasonable. The atmosphere is determined by other patrons, so never the same. Our only concern is that even when we chose a 3 chillies dish it was bland (lacking in flavour) and the portion of the cauliflower bhaji was half the size of the aloo gobi (as if the potatoes were just removed from an aloo gobi side dish but still the same price). Unfortunately just an okay (slightly below average) experience, a shame as we have been coming here for absolutely years.

Came here for a curry with friends one Friday evening. It’s a traditional family run curry house. There’s lots of selection and the prices were very reasonable. We all had a good meal and a few beers

Booked here for a Saturday night dine-in. Lived in the area for years but never visited here Firstly, booking was a must!! Place was very busy, always a good sign! Service was quite slow but not sure if they were a staff member down. When the food did arrive it was absolutely delicious and well worth the wait. I had a lamb madras, the lamb was so soft and tender, very tasty!! Other half has a Dhansak which was outstanding. Mushroom rice served with both was also great. We had a great meal with some of the best Indian restaurant food I’ve had. There’s a reason this place has been here for so long!!

Never had a bad meal, excellent

We booked a table last minute and we were able to secure a booking for dinner. It was extremely busy. Poor staff were run off their feet and occupied by a steady stream of customers who had booked takeaway meals. Unfortunately, it did effect our service as it was quite a while before we were offered a drink, and even longer for our order. But the food was nice when it finally came and it didn't spoil our experience. Would I dine in again? Probably not, but I might get a takeaway!

Nice local Indian resraurant. Traditional decor, all your favorites on the menu. Very good value for money. We went with a group of friends during the heatwave and it was very warm inside as the air-con either wasn't on or wasnt working, but it wasn't unbearable and everyone enjoyed their meal.

Lovely little restaurant, tasty food and great service, the young man helped my wife choose her main because there was soo much to choose from, great choice. Happy wife, happy life! Only thing the wine list needs an update, a lot more wines out there, old school list But will be back!

Food is amazing here, and the times I've gone the atmosphere has been really pleasant, the staff don't hang around staring at you but are within easy reach if you need anything. Some of my group have some allergies and the staff and chefs here will go out of their way to help which is lovely. Prices are actually good from my experience but I stick to pints of coke which is never cheap in any shop ever. Food prices are decent and I've never left feeling like I've spent more than I gained if that makes sense so very happy here too. Overall definitely somewhere I will (and have) come back to time and time again.

By far the worst Indian experience I’ve ever had after entering the EMPTY Restaurant Was given a takeaway menu Then given plastic take away tubs for our dips/ starters So questioned this with Waiter Even he agreed They saving on washing up What a joke or a place! Then given two flat pints Ask to change the waiter then sticks his finger in beer Swirled it around in the glass Telling me it’s not flat Even tho he don’t drink!!! Told me it’s not flat and refused to change At this point we walked out And Was asked to pay £5 for the privilege Very rude Very uncomfortable experience Vile Avoid!!!!!!!

U fortunately, after lockdown was eased,the normal Sunday buffet was not reinstated,but the a la carter meal was nice and not too pricey.Although it was quite busy the second time I went,service was good. I was even offered a complimentary drink the second time!

We have been going to the Mahatma for over 25 years and it is always our go to restaurant. Authentic Asian cuisine , brilliant friendly staff, nice atmosphere, reasonably priced. It ticks all our boxes. There is no silly gimmicky dishes , no crass overdone decor, it's the place to go for a tasty Indian meal with family and friends.

Just had a very tasteless meal, not the usual standard. Onion Barjee very hard, Chicken Tikka Marsala very watery, chicken korma tasteless and so were the Bombay potatoes.

This is a very good takeaway restaurant. In the week the food is better than at the weekend. The service is very fast and the food has always arrived hot. All the items ordered have always arrived. Telephone manner is very good also.

Fui y cené esta noche, ya que he comido desde aquí antes y es realmente agradable. El curry de vegetales que recibí estaba absolutamente nadando con aceite y simplemente no tenía la consistencia adecuada para un curry de vegetales. No lo comí pero comí el resto de la comida y fue bueno.

After a meal with a friend Tonight we were disappointed with the service, i have lived in Avery Hill for 50yrs, we decided to try a sit down meal instead of a take away but the waiters were so miserable and made us feel very uncomfortable, not a smile in sight, took our curry sauce away while we were still eating. very noisy and far too small to have a help yourself behind the chairs making customers very HOT from the steam from food. They didn't even acknowledge we were leaving. Won't be back.

I have used this restaurant for over 30 years. The same owners, the same outstanding quality of food. The prices are ridiculously cheap by comparison. A decent curry is getting harder to find but look no further than this place.

Teníamos pollo Korma, pollo Rogan Palau arroz y una niñera cocinado a la perfección bien vale la pena una visita. .

Glasses were dirty and had bits in. The food was okay although the naan and bajis were least fresh I have had at a curry house since I can remember. Very bad service and extremely rude waiters, although they were seemed strangely nicer to other customers in the restaurant. Waiters routinely stared at us and our food while stood still with nothing else to do, gossiped and traded smirks between each other. Unpleasant dining experience, would not recommend.

Ordered for a family (takeaway) Asked for tikka starter plain with no spice for our baby which was no problem for them. Very reasonably priced and food was lovely. Will be ordering again.

I went to this restaurant with my wife and my parents, the food was actually good but the fat waiter had an attitude problem, me and my wife finished our starter and the old plank of a waiter, just chucked down a clean set of knives and forks without placing them in front of us nicely, one word for this is "appalling" I was actually livid with this, if it wasn't for the fact I was with my parents, then I would have lost the plot, and also to add they tried to stitch me up for a pint of carlsberg I never even had.... I'm not a happy bunny it ruined our evening.

This is the nearest Indian Restaurant to my home - and in a way I am loathe to let everyone know how good it is in case it gets difficult to get a table.We went for a Thursday night buffet.It is a very relaxed atmosphere one of the 'old school' Indian Restaurants,in terms of décor - making for a cosy atmosphereVery good value for money - not at all over priced. The buffet is plentiful if you opt for that but other items on menu equally goodSeating very comfortable - parking usually bang outside.Ours was a 'low key' celebration and it ticked all the boxes.

I took my family and we had a great meal we had a variety of dishes and they were all enjoyable, this is an old-fashioned Indian restaurant in the best sense of the word and the bill for six of us, including drinks, came to less than £80, this was excellent value and the adults were given complimentary brandy or baileys and after dinner mints.

I have eaten at Mahatma several times and there is always a welcome and friendly atmosphere. The décor is a little old fashioned but reminds me of many curry houses I've visited over the years. The food was exceptional, all dishes very tasty and the service excellent. I had chicken tikka masala and it was outstanding, my son had tandoori butter chicken and really enjoyed it. At the end of the meal I was given a free whisky. If you like a traditional curry then I wholeheartedly recommend this to you.

dhansak is lovely but if you have a birianni or a curry its not hot at all and not much taste the price is excellent and they give you an orange to cleanse you palette and a complimentary drink when you pay, the restaurant is a bit dated but very clean

I live very close to this restaurant and order a take away at least every month (they even recognise my voice on the phone) and eat there every two. Ideal menu for both new to Indian food and the more experienced. Exceptional value eat as much as you like buffet menu which changes on certain days. A good local curry house, booking advised Fridays and Saturdays.

Extremely affordable with generally good food and service. The look of the resteraunt is nice although the decor is slightly dated. On the whole it is a nice resteraunt and is excellent value for money!

Rather dated decor but homely. Friendly service but not intrusive. Good value. Usual Indian menu nothing out of the ordinary. Msybe not for a very special occasion but great if you can't be bothered to cook on a Wednesday. Easy to park. They usually offer a free digestif drink after meal. Eg brandy or baileys I feel comfy there. You don't have to dress up! Rarely busy but msybe book Saturday evening.
