We have just had a pre Xmas 3 course Xmas Dinner including coffee and mince pie. It was absolutely delicious and was even cheaper than our local pub/restaurants. Friendly staff, lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings. Well worth a visit

The food was superb, the abbey was stunning. The only let down for myself were the toilets . I am a wheelchair user, while I did manage to use the toilet , they really do need a good clean , the toilet I used was dirty inside and out , very off putting , even if they had a disabled toilet outside it would have been easier for me , I couldn’t get to the wash basin to wash my hands , but I always have wet wipes with me. Owner was so lovely and welcoming.

Called before booking to check that they were wheelchair and disabled friendly. It turned out that they were not, the nice chap came out to meet us and wheeled my mum around a side entrance (not a particularly nice way to enter a ramp on the front steps would be better?) I enquired where the disbaled toilets were to be told they are the same ones as the ordinary ones I had used earlier. Well the wheelchair did not fit through the tiny door there was no room for a wheelchair in the actual area of the sinks let alone being able to get one into the tiny cubicle. It wa svery embarrassing and stressful experience trying to help my mum out of her chair to get into the bathroom she can barely walk. I hate to think what a disable gentleman would do as there were steps down to the gents! On the way out off mum was taken by the chap around the back entrance pasted piled up sofas and other things only to have to get out of her wheelchair because the door wasn't wide enough. She was shattered very much like the inside of the hotel. The food was nice enough but not fine dining at all. The tables were singing to small cafe outdoor tables and barely wide enough for two plates. No table clothes, tired scratched cutlery, half of it missing, bread roll from a packet resembling a burger bun and lurpak in a plastic box. Fine dining is white table cloths, properly laid silverware and table. The young lad serving had no idea and grunted his way around. After 4 times of asking for another drink we gave up. We had to ask for everything that should come on the atble as standard like water etc. No one came to ask if we needed anything during our meal so consequently we didn't order wine or other drinks. The dining room was very odd, peeling wall paper, hideous ill fitting turquoise chair covers the whole thing completely mismatched cheap furniture. The diners were squashed in one end of the room and half the room set up for breakfast the next day. Although the long table in the entry way looked like it had not been cleaned up from this morning! It looked like someone had borrowed furniture from a chippy, a going out of business bistro and thrown it all together. It looked nothing like the pictures on the website. There was piles of things lying around. It needs work but firstly it needs to decide if its country house traditional or cheap modern chic. The lounge area was comfortable but still the decor was an odd mix. The bar area looked more like it was a storage for a bunch of tacky box chairs and the tables were dirty. The place needs a good clean, tidy up and soemone to choose a design or theme for the place, basic things like putting together 4 of the tiny tables with table clothes and new cutlery. Staff should be given training on how to properly interact with customers pleasantries for waiting on staff is a must grunts are not. Luckily the price of our meal (which was nice but nothing special) did reflect the standard. We had booked expecting as advertised fine dining experience. Plus sides the man was nice and pleasant they appeared to be dog friendly with water bowls inside. If you want fine dining chose somewhere else.

A good sea food entre was enjoyable, a fair steak and chips and the sweet was well presented and tasted good. I think it fair to say that under the constraints caused by Covid the hotel was obviously struggling and complaints would be churlish.

We went for a meal, absolutely awful my mum had part of the plastic in her food from the packaging, the waiter was not engaging at all and didn't know the food or menu at all. I have been going to this place for a long time and it's really gone down hill. The hall way is crammed with old carpets. The dining hall is cold. The chef said we couldn't have a refund even having plastic in our meal, this was because it was a ding ding meal. Unbelievable!!! This hotel outside is a magnificent old monastery and the management or person that owns this beautiful building is running it to the ground. Please don't be fooled by the pictures. The smell in the bathrooms is horrendous and the decor leaves something to the imagination. The staff I feel sorry for, this is truly a management problem and the whole thing needs to be re done, re thought and def put out to tender. I will be putting my views to my management team at Google.

We enjoyed an excellent meal here our night of arrival while staying overnight at the hotel. Plenty of choice on the menu and very nicely prepared. We had a three course dinner at a very reasonable price. All the courses were well cooked, arrived hot and nicely presented. Our young waiter was great too, very attentive. Breakfast was great - self serve bufffet and hot breakfast cooked to order. Worked well and staff were efficient. Enjoyed all our meals at the hotel.

This was a lovely old building but sorely in need of some TLC. It doesn't cost anything to make sure the curtains aren't hanging down in the dining room and it was really chilly! The service was really good - we met two people and they were both friendly and efficient. But the bar area was unwelcoming and cold, although there was a good selection of gins!! The food was good enough, but not anything out of the ordinary. All in all we think "average" is the best rating for this hotel.

Travelled for 1.5 hours for Sunday dinner... staff very welcoming and all the reception rooms were amazing ... coal and gas fires making rooms very welcoming ... I had the smoked duck to start then turkey.., my partner had avocado and crayfish then roast beef ... all the food was well presented ... however ! The bread rolls could have been home baked and served warm ... the food that was home cooked was good but not enough of it ... frozen Yorkshire puddings are not acceptable ... the roast meats were not roasted on site and ... forgive me if I’m wrong.., the roast potatoes were frozen and the mash was not freshly mashed potato ... if you have chefs on site use them !! I finished off with the sherry trifle cake ... I am sorry to say that this was not nice and had never seen a drop of sherry ... loved my day in wales.., loved the building and it’s ambience ... use the chefs you have to full advantage !! 5 stars next visit if you get it right

Went here for family celebration lunch on the run up to Christmas, we have eaten here many times before. The place is an old Abbey/Hall with a lot of history, with this type of building you get rustic and character and value for money is excellent. We had drinks in the bar first, the staff were very friendly and it was a lovely Christmassy atmosphere with real fires in each of the fireplaces tended to and a Lovely welcoming huge Christmas tree in the reception area. The meal 3 course was fantastic as usual and yes the place has character and a rustic nature as it is not a newly built sterile travel lodge type of place but all in all the feel of the place added to what was a lovely Christmas for us. This is what Christmas is about. Thankyou.

Visited this Hotel in November 2019 to celebrate a friend's 70th birthday celebrations, stayed overnight. Set in beautiful surroundings, very quiet. It was like staying in a beautiful country mansion. One suite, photo enclosed had two single beds decorated as a royal bed, which was lovely for the boy and girl that slept there as we called them Prince and Princess, the bed had royal crests on them. Lots of lovely private sitting rooms beautifully decorated where we all came together. Very friendly staff. We had dinner in a private dining room, food excellent, plenty of choice. Excellent breakfast with full welsh breakfast, cereal bar and plenty of toast, unlimited tea or coffee. Rooms are excellently fitted, washing line over bath, spare heater, hair dryer, drinks, t.v. and Net Flix. It is not perfect, some decorations needs finishing, the window in my loft room had rotted and open to the weather, if you find the room cold when you arrive, adjust the radiator settings to come on.

Really enjoyed our visit to Maenan Abbey. We visited recently for Sunday lunch with family and had the 4 courses at £18.95, which we found to be very good value. We all had a starter each. I chose the Potato and Leek Soup, which to be honest I found a bit tasteless, but my Son loved it and the rest of my family enjoyed all their different starters. We had the beef and turkey for our main, which we all found very tasty and full of flavour, and then a dessert each. I had the lemon meringue roulard, which was delicious, followed by coffee / tea in the lounge area. The dining area is very clean, full of light and very inviting. The manor itself is obviously quite old fashioned but very quirky, which we really liked. There was a gentleman in the entrance to the dining area playing the piano which was a nice touch. It was a totally different dining experience for us, which is what we went for. Its certainly not perfect by any means but I guess that is the charm of it, which is why I have given it 5 stars. The ladies taking our orders and serving the meals were lovely - very organised, friendly and welcoming. Would recommend you visit and decide for yourself - it may be for you, it may not be, but we certainly enjoyed it and will definitely return. Thanks very much.

Booked after viewing their typical Sunday lunch menu as posted online. The actual menu presented on the day is a little "cut down".But before going through to the dining room we chose a bottle of wine off the fairly extensive wine list. Sorry but what is the point of letting customers spend 10 minutes deliberating which wine to have if you don't have most of the wines on the list as we did?? We decided between 2 Riojas - 31 & 34 on the list and 10 minutes later were told the only reds available were 25, 27, and 44 or something like that. Simply not good enough??The Avocado salad starter I ordered came with shrimps, not the prawns on he menu and definitely no crayfish as on the website. My partner's salmon with king prawn was supposed to be served as a "rillette" but came only as sliced salmon without prawns and had to be sent back. It did not come back as described. The main of lamb was presented as about 5 slices of dry tasteless meat on a huge pile of mash - more potato on it's own that the dish needed without the separate roast and skin on potatoes and vegetables served as sides. The room and setting is great, the waiting and staff were friendly and cheerful but someone in charge needs to get a grip and fulfill the expectations that your diners deserve.

I stayed here during a family wedding and spent the night accommodated in the Conwy suite. I have to challenge every aspect of the supposed high standard's described on the establishments Web site. All the rooms hired out to our wedding party were in a terrible state of repair and dirty. There was wall paper peeling off the walls. Carpet not fitted and crumpled. The toiletries and towels must have been purchased from a local pound shop. The shower screens attached to the bath tubs were fitted terribly. The water temperature was scolding hot and couldnot be changed. Never use this place if you have any type of mobility / physical disability issues there zero disability facilities but don't see fit to advertise that fact. The hotel manager was content for my disabled uncle to man handled up and down the stairs. There was no accessible toilet anywhere. I refused to pay the £120 and am awaiting a response from the manager

The building itself is absolutely beautiful. The bar man couldn’t have been more friendly and welcoming. The food itself however isn’t near as good as it was. It gave the impression of being prepared ahead of time. The bread was cold and some of the dishes weren’t really very warm either. Came here 4 years ago for a family celebration it was so lovely then, my goodness its changed!! Today it was dirty, windowsills thick with dirt. The fireplace as you walk in was thick with dust and all mamner off drill bits left on top. The once opulent lounge was freezing cold, dirty floor and windows infact holes in the windows were blocked up with cardboard. People were expected to sit at a table in the bar area with a computer on it. In the 'waiting area' by the staircase there was a hoover, piles of boxes just left. A random door in the hallway propped up totally unsafe. The radiator next to our table in the dining room was so grubby i couldnt look at it. The entrance way needed a good hoover and clean aswell with the out of date flyers removed. Pork over cooked and dry rest of the food OK. Completely ruined mothers day for 3 generations.

They had a pianist playing in the background throughout the meal which was a nice touch. We were seated within 20 minutes and the food and service were very good. I had the goats cheese starter, roast beef main and cheesecake for dessert followed by coffee and mints. It started to get busier by 1pm so I would suggest getting there early. The price was £16.75 for a three course meal with coffee and mints which I thought was very reasonable as you do get plenty of choice.

The photo above tells its own story. The zig zag balsamic drizzle, the two (whole) cherry tomatoes is exactly what you get whether you order tempura prawns or soused herring. It's the same routine with the main course. A dollop of mashed potato and whatever protein you order - sea bass, roast beef, salmon - draped over the top with an accompanying drizzle. And yet, the chef can clearly cook - the vegetables were very good, the mashed potato was well seasoned. There is just a complete lack of love in the food and the whole restaurant. It is cheap - but not good value - but wouldn't it be better to concentrate on the cooking and let the quality speak for itself rather than resort to presentation which looks like it belongs in a Mike Leigh film - and no, that isn't a compliment.

Also a lovely venue for the party, very clean. Unfortunately though there wasn't much for vegetarians. I started off with some tomatoes and coleslaw and a bread roll. When I went back and asked if the pasta was vegetarian the reply off the waiter was 'I'm not sure, I think so but if you find a piece of Bacon in it I'm sorry'. Luckily it was vegetarian but I feel like the staff should know what food that they're serving and know if it had meat in it, especially since it's the 21st Century and vegetarianism is a thing! :)

THE REVIEW IS ONLY FOR THE RESTAURANT.Having passed this wonderful looking hotel on an earlier visit to the area we decided to have lunch there on our next visit. The entrance to the hotel is impressive with it's gallery landing and sweeping staircase. The reception room where we had drinks before our meal was cold as was the welcoming from the staff. The view from the reception room was very picturesque even on a cold damp February day.A few minutes after ordering our meal we were shown into the restaurant but normally the staff take our drinks if not finished but not this time.In general the restaurant was well set out and pleasantly decorated and we had a table overlooking the drive. Unfortunately the restaurant was also cold with fan heaters spread around the room. Even when a member of staff saw me unplugging a heater to bring closer no offer of assistance was forth coming.I have to say the food was very good even though the choice was limited. The soup was tasty and hot and the goats cheese was well presented. We both had sea bass which again was well presented and the vegetables were also hot and well presented. It was during our meal we were looking around and noticed things you should NOT see in a hotel let alone in a restaurant, see pictures. After our meal i took time to look around the restaurant and was very disappointed with what i could see. The worst was all the cobwebs on the window just above our dining table. There was also several other areas where i noticed cobwebs plus several other negatives, curtains falling down, pelmet falling down, lights not working, wallpaper peeling off the walls, damp patches, bits of wire hanging from the ceiling that i assume were used for decorations. It was very disappointing to see all these negatives from what in general is a lovely hotel. Hopefully these faults will be rectified when we visit again on a day where the inside temperature is higher than the outside temperature.

After visiting Maenan Abbey to celebrate my Nana & Grandads 50th Wedding Anniversary I was left appalled by the behaviour of the staff! Having booked the table for between 7:00-7:30 and arriving at 7:20 we were rushed to sit down. I then asked could we have ten minutes to look at the menu and was firmly told no, the waiter then stood over all 19 of us individually pressuring us to order immediately. The drinks were slammed down in front of us, so much so they were being spilt all over the table. The starters then arrived however, the order was incorrect. Instead of apologising they stood over one of our party pointing at them saying "she ordered it" when she had not. She explained what she had ordered but they remained stood there pointing saying to each other no she did order this and trying to put the plate down. There was no apology given for their mistakes and all food was chucked in front of us. Next, the main courses arrived, I ordered the duck (what a big mistake!!!). The duck was served with rock hard chips, on what I would describe to be a plate you would use if you went camping!! It all tasted awful. Also, when serving the wrong meals (incorrect order taken again!) they almost hit my sister in the head three times with the plate. They then let the tea towel drag through my nanas hair whilst she was having to ducking as they handed the boiling hot plate over her head, without telling anyone they were hot and allowing us to burn our hands! Finally, they also dropped chips over my sister and into her handbag and again no apology was given and she was told "it's fine I'll get it later". Next we ordered deserts, only to be told there wasn't enough, my dad said it was ok he wouldn't have one the waiter replied "alright whatever" and walked off. To try and not let their mistakes and behaviour ruin our night we decided to leave the empty, silent dining room and go sit in the empty lounge which had its own bar. We asked the waitress could we order some drinks however, as we didn't give the order quick enough for her she shouted across the room "DRINKS", which I assumed meant would anybody like a drink?Surprise surprise, she too got the order wrong and when my grandad tried to explain he did not order the drink she started telling him he did and tried to make him pay for it! At this point my dad went to speak to the manager and ask the waitress who served us the drinks to get him. When the manager asked her what is it about she grunted "I think it's about me". To me this shows she was aware of her disgusting attitude. Overall, I know now why this hotel was empty! The manager and staff provide the worst service possible, their attitudes stink and they need reminding a smile doesn't hurt and manners are free. None of us will ever be going back here and I strongly suggest you don't too!

for my starter i had the prawns in breadcrumbs, you get 4 very small prawns! For my main i had the Bramley Chicken, bramley you think Apples maybe, no sauce a very dry dish, but a classic stroke for dessert, 'a honeycomb cheesecake', sounds nice doesn't it, you get THREE MALTESERS! That's the honeycomb. Utter disaster, NEVER AGAIN

This was our first time here and it came about due to a recommendation.Staff were well trained and always available Choice of starters and main course was good. Presentation was also very good I had fresh prawns for a starter which I loved, see photoAnd roast beef for mains which I requested very rare and it was with plenty of vegetables.Coffee in the lounge and music supplied by a pianist Great location will certainly return and recommend. One small point if we ask for gravy in a gravy boat that's what I would like not on the meal.Pricing was good but could do with a price for just 2 courses not the set 3.

We had a meal here last night the food was superb when we stayed here 5 years ago and decided it would be nice to have a meal while we are in the area , we were not disappointed, we had a fabulous meal , I hade sirloin stake cooked to perfection , oxtail soup for starters so rich in flavour and chocolate stack for desert , my partner had a chicken starter then lamb and ginger pud for afters , washed down with 2 rounds of drinks all for £53 , what can you say fantastic value and a lovely location , the hotel is lovely and a lot of work has been done on the refurbishment front for the rooms , the locals need to use this venue more as I feel you cannot beat it , quite quirky aswell with an automaton Piano playing gives a nice ambience , good service aswell from guys waiting on , will visit again when here next time

We tried to go for a meal here but the restaurant was fully booked (only a couple of people in there at the time). We asked if we could eat in the bar area but were told only sandwiches were available. Too be honest the bar area looked like it could do with some care, only a few tables with large chairs around them. There is a large TV on the wall, the furniture looked like it had not been cleaned for some time. The outside gardens were very nice, but the tables when vacated hadn't been emptied. Such a shame, as we would like to have tried the food.

Visited with family who were staying at caravan site next door. Early bird menu meant we could choose a three course meal for approx £17. Had a drink in bar area and food order taken promptly. Good choice of starters, mains and dessert. Dining room is nice but rather formal and old fashioned. All our food was well cooked and presented, service was polite and friendly. The hotel itself seemed a bit tired and in need of a refurb, could do with an update and spring clean . All in all it was an enjoyable evening, food was good ,staff were friendly and efficient just something about the appearance and ambience of the hotel was lacking.

We have stayed at this hotel twice and have told all our friends about the place. Very friendly and we will no doubt return. This review is about the restaurant where we have enjoyed both breakfast and evening meals. The menu offers more than enough to suit varying tastes and the quality of the food is top end. It will not disappoint and chatting with other guests in the bar before and after the dinner it was amazing how many are returnees who shared the same opinion. The staff are attentive and at the same time give you enough space to enjoy your food. Good choice of wines to enjoy with your meal and a pleasant atmosphere to enjoy a meal as a couple or with 2 (slightly naughty) kids. We enjoyed our experience of the hotel and restaurant and our kids are always asking can we go back which says it all really.

We returned to take lunch here twice in the month. The second occasion was to treat a friend who was recovering from a broken femur and had been housebound. On each occasion we had the same first class experience. Prices were the same for excellent food again. On the first occasion we had sea bass and roast lamb for a main course. On the second occasion we had roast turkey and roast lamb. The starters and desserts were all excellent. Full marks again!

The staff went well beyond the call of duty and had an excellent eye for detail and customer service. The Goats cheese and blueberry tart was wonderful ! An interesting combination and a welcome change to a risotto for the vegetarian option.

This was a hard place to rate because I would give it an excellent for the food, and a poor for the atmosphere. We went here on the recommendation of our hotel, because of the excellent food at a great value. And it was very good and a great value - before 1915 hrs. you can get a three-course meal for less then 20 pounds! There is only a set menu, but a large selection of choices for each course. Sadly, the atmosphere is so stuffy and stiff, redolent of blue-haired old ladies; the decor is very old-fashioned and in serious need of updating. Not threadbare, just very outdated. Granted, we were there on a rainy, April Wednesday, but still! I am not sure the excellent food (and it really was good) was worth the ambiance. We did not linger for dessert. Children would definitely not be comfortable here, though they do offer a good children's menu.

My husband and I use this restaurant about once a month, it's only a few miles from our home. It's a lovely hotel in the beautiful Conwy valley. Can't comment on the hotel rooms but the restaurant is worth a visit. We usually have a 3 course meal which is just over £16 each. There is a good choice on all courses, we usually have roast beef, served on top of mash, Yorkshire pud, boiled new pots, roast pots and two types of veg in separate bowls as our main course. All food is well presented and hot. Waiters are always pleasant, my only gripe is the teddy bear 'playing' the piano, he should be evicted!! Whilst there we have heard people phone to ask about dress code, it's casual so no need to have the suit cleaned, unless you want to.

We held our Golden Wedding lunch at the Maenan Abbey and this turned out to be the right choice. At the booking stage David, the Manager ,was extremely helpful and after discussing our preferences produced a personalised menu for us containing a selection of 6 starters and 6 main courses for prerordering. On the day the weather was not good but on arrival we were greeted by a blazing log fire and welcoming staff. The private dining room was immaculate and the service was slick and efficient. The quality and presentation of the food was of 5 star standard and ,in our opinion, superior to what is served in some 5 star listed restaurants in this area.Thankyou to everyone at the Maenan Abbey for making our day extra special.

Sunday dinner is out of this world, but booking is recomended to avoid disappointment.

Stayed here for a 4 night half price bed & breakfast deal. Lovely old building with lots of potential if tidied up and more staff in the morning breakfast rush. Stayed in the pet free bedroom which was of a nice size with plenty of storage for clothes including 10 hangers in wardrobe although steps up to shower were tricky. Both ladies in the morning serving breakfast were friendly and polite. First morning there was a mix up with my wifes GF/dairy free breakfast which was down to insufficient communication between the manager and chef. Only ate the evening meal here on one occasion but it was lovely tasty food well presented. Monday evening the hotel is taken over by the local rotary club so no evening meals available. Initially there was a strong smell of cat pee at the front of the hotel but the rain made it better. After returning at 9.50 pm following a meal out, we were locked out of the hotel and no amount of banging on the door or ringing the hotel reception phone could draw any attention. Eventually I walked around the rear of the hotel to the owners cottage and banged on his door which worked and he came and opened up the front entrance. WI-FI was decent and available in our room. The was a decorator there during our visit who was slowly renovating rooms. Overall we would stay again but not at the full price of from £110 for a nights B&B.

Four of us had lunch here and, as previously, we thoroughly enjoyed our food and service. However, the lack of cleanliness was evident everywhere. The flooring throughout the bar, dining room and lounge obviously had not been vacuumed. The unlit fire in the bar area had not been cleaned out and ash was still all over the hearth. The chair covers, over the dining room chairs, have certainly seen better days as quite a few of them had holes in them and dried, spilt food stained one of the chairs at our table. Both the gents and ladies toilets had not been cleaned for some time and parts of the hotel looked as though it was a furniture storage depot. The hotel was also quite cold.We were all very disappointed with the state of the hotel, however, the food was excellent and the service very good.

We stayed at the hotel 13/2/16-14/2/16 had our evening meal after waiting over an hour in reception listening to the chef clearly unhappy shouting at staff and throwing things across the kitchen (we could hear everything). We were sat in darkness as there was only one light bulb working which stopped working during our meal. The table decorations were not equipped to light up anything. Meal was lovely although broccoli should have stalks cut off maybe personal preference. The waiters didn't know what the stuffing was without asking the chef and didn't know what the pudding was like "but it tastes nice". One continued to walk around like a doorman or something. Teas/coffees never appeared and they said they had no hot chocolate (couldn't someone go the shop if they ran out?). In the morning breakfast we had toast that was hard and cold despite being advertised at fresh and hot. They seemed short staffed. The young girl Anna was asking all guests if they were staying for the evening meal and we overheard a couple say politely no they weren't having an evening meal despite staying another night. Her reply was "oh the chef won't be happy he's already in a mood"! Completely unprofessional. Maenan abbey is a beautiful place it's just a shame the staff are lacking in communication I think.

My husband and I booked into the Abbey for a weekend away for our Wedding anniversary in June 2015. The website looked amazing and the photos also looked good. We booked into the penthouse suite as we wanted something a bit special for our anniversary. We were very very disappointed with our stay and think it was massively overpriced. £300 for the 2 nights... Not at all worth that.Upon arrival the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. We were shown up to our room and told a little about the hotel which was nice. The room we were told had recently been refurbished. I'm assuming to make it look like the price they were selling the room at. For £150 a night I would have expected luxury but that wasn't what we got.Good things about the room:There was a huge beautifully carved wooden king size bed which looked incredible but the rest of the room did not match, Beautiful heavy good quality drapes which kept the light totally out so these were also good.Bad things:Holes in the wall stuffed with tissue. Badly painted features. Dirty tired carpet. No where to hang clothes. There was a wardrobe in the adjoining room but you couldn't open the doors as it had a sofa next to it. The bathroom - Well...... Cheap, nasty fixtures. Awful lino floor. The shower was obviously a cheap one that was made to look expensive but didn't pull it off at all. The water barely came out at a trickle so we couldn't really shower properly or run a bath. Having very long hair this was massively disappointing. We unfortunately were running late when we arrived so had to shower and get out quickly for a dinner reservation otherwise I would have spoken to someone at the time and the second day again we were in a hurry to get out as we had plans with friends who lived locally. Also the one member of staff that was available in the mornings was so run off her feet that we didn't want to bother her.The breakfast was really good. Cooked well and the woman serving was very nice and friendly although she could have done with an extra 2 pairs of hands as she looked really stressed and was literally running all over the place. We did mention the problems at check out and to be honest the staff member wasn't at all bothered by it.Only redeeming feature was the breakfast and the friendly staff.Would not return and certainly wouldn't recommend. Very disappointing.

Annual club dinner with keynote speaker - hence large crowd (mixed). We selected our starters and mains in advance from a wide choice and none of them caused any disappointment. Desserts ordered at table in due course. Service was well handled via coding on the place names and each individual table was served its mixed range of dishes at the same time, rather than the same dish being served across the whole room which would have been easier on the venue. Diners appreciated this service

Had a nice and quiet set lunch here recently, the restaurant/ hotel views & surroundings are excellent for photo opportunities etc, especially if the weather is nice. The menu/ food itself is nice/ simple and not pretentious. This hotel is well placed in the middle of the Conwy Valley with ample car parking. If you like historic locations you will love this one. It is on the site of a former Abbey and monks are buried in the front garden! The hotel has been re-furbished and after a long gap I enjoyed a family dinner recently. The service was attentive, the choice of food excellent. We all enjoyed our meals and wouldn't hesitate to eat there again. The food was really good - breakfast came as part of the room price. The first morning was order what you wanted and the second morning it was a buffet which unfortunately was a bit slow as couldn't seem to keep up with the amount of people we were informed there was only a small kitchen (even though only about 16 of us). In turn however the food was good. Dinner on the first night we booked a table for 7.15 of which we didn't get seated until nearly 8pm after we placed our order in the bar. As soon as we were seated the food came straight out. At £16.25 for 3 courses you couldn't go wrong. I went for the Smoked Breast of Duck with a Caramelised Red Onion Compote - which tasted lovely - just wished there was a bit more of it to enjoy as the duck was cut rather small but looked elegant. For main I had lamb steaks with Mash and Veg - which was cooked perfectly and was really good. My wife and people with me opted for the peppered steak with chips which was had a lot of pepper on it so beware if your not too keen on pepper. For dessert then I went for White Chocolate cheesecake which was to die for. The second night we had a 3 course meal as part of the wedding reception we were attending which I must say was absolutely fantastic especially as they manage to cater for about 100 people in one go (for a small kitchen) they done a really good job.The wine list was also vast with a great selection. We opted for the Cougars Moon Rose - Was the best Rose I have had so far and managed to sink a couple of bottles that night.

The dininig room was light and spacious with a lovely homely feel and the tables were attractively laid with floral displays and crisp linen cloths. Our food was without fault, ample helpings with tureens full of crisp fresh vegetables and new potatoes . Yes the place is a bit quirky, bar area could do with a sort out perhaps better/more seating as it used as a waiting area for the restaurant, and Winnie the Pooh playing the piano could do with turning down a notch or two. However the lunchtime menu was excellent 3 courses plus coffee/tea for under £14 per head ! The choices of starter were varied enough to suit all from soup to mackerel to duck, the mains had turkey, beef or lamb to name but a few choices, desserts again plenty of choices. The quality and presentation of the meals was faultless, its not always easy to please others from the hospitality trade but Hannah and the staff managed to keep 4 hotel owners more than happy. The service was polite, helpful and unobtrusive, the meals tasty and well cooked, and the 'Fat Chips' were to die for !We will wholeheartedly be recommending the restaurant to our Guests.Thank you all for a lovely lunchtime.

My wife and I made a return visit to Maenan Abbey last night, and although the quality of their offering is not still not quite as good as it once was, it was much improved over our last visit. The Starters were excellent, and the return turn of the homemade fat chips, and home made onion rings, on the main courses were very welcome and well cooked. The veg was a little over cooked for us, but many people would possibly disagree. The one cause for annoyance was the fact that they still maintain the ridiculous way of serving the steak, stacked on top of the chips on a metal platter, stuck to the main plate by balsamic drizzle. This makes it difficult to cut the steak, so we wanted to remove it from the platter but when we did we could not put the platter down on the table without covering the tablecloth with the drizzle! So we had to empty the vegetable dishes and stack the platters on top. The sweets were OK ? The price of the three course fixed menu was very reasonable. And it is reassuring to see that the hotel has been awarded a 5 star hygiene certificate.
