Really quirky tea room. Varied menu and lovely cup cakes to tempt at the end. Todays special of fish finger flat bread with wedges and tartare sauce was very nice. Loving the balsamic dressing on the salad. The tuna cheese toasties are oozing their contents and are very tasty. Drinks are exciting with little added touches like chocolate sugar sprinkles and marshmallows in the milk shakes. Really cheerful establishment and very kind staff. It isn’t too expensive and nice to have waitress service too. Well worth a visit in central Blackburn.

Visited on Tuesday and had a lovely tuna melt toastie with salad and coleslaw. It was excellent and the balsamic dressing on the salad made it perfect.Had a lovely lemon cup cake because they were too appealing not try one. Bliss. Enjoyed it so much I returned with my family on Thursday and enjoyed the Bacon, Brie and Cranberry Panini special. My Husband had a breakfast wrap which was also exceptional. Service was polite and efficient and it was lovely and clean. Brought a lemon meringue home and that was delicious. Just what we need in Blackburn to cheer us all up.

Called here on Saturday for a break from shopping, walked past many times going to another cafe, but we have now found a new place to dine, good range if drinks, best ever Victoria sponge, but so much attention to detail, this was a perfectly cut slice ( no edges or bits missing) massive pot of tea too, no need to ask for hot water here. Mother in law had a lovely hot chocolate and a proper bacon sandwich. Menu for breakfast and lunch looked good too, we will definitely be making another visit soon, very soon!

Called in on recommendation from a work colleague who had visited several times. Lovely setting with quirky things. You have the choice of eating in or takeaway which I had due to been on a break from work. Very good menu at reasonable prices. Good selection of fresh cream cakes and afternoon tea can be booked. All the food is made fresh nothing prepared before hand which is the best part to me. I opted for deep filled tuna sandwich on granary bread which came with side salad and coleslaw. Absolutely delicious very tasty with plenty of filling. I was that impressed did take a menu back to work as well.

delightful tea room located opposite Blackburn Centre library. visited for lunch the other day and it was fantastic. the menu was simply lunch, salads, sandwiches, bagels, toasties, jacket potatoes, all day breakfasts and then came the cake/desert selection. staff were lovely and the food was delightful. I can recommend the smoked salmon with poached eggs. always have freshly baked cakes and cupcakes as well as giant meringue. they also do afternoon tea which I think needs to be pre booked and they habe a cute party room downstairs for the children. an slice in wonderland theme with lovely decor and China crockery. I have been a regular at Mad Hatters for a while and yesterday my husband and I went for lunch. While our order was being made, we sat with our cups of tea. The waiter / chef brought our order to the table and as he put my order down, he knocked my cup of tea over, causing it to go all over the table and my lap, soaking my trousers and tee shirt. Luckily by this time the tea was cool or it could have badly scalded the top of my legs and stomach. There was a commotion and apologies as he grabbed clothes to dry myself and the table.

Regular visitor at this lovely little cafe during my lunch break for a sandwich or just a quick coffee. Recently brought the hubby along for brunch he had bacon & egg on toast and I had the bagel, scrambled egg with crispy bacon and both were really good. With a tea, coffee and soft drink bill came to approx £16 which is reasonable. Cakes always look good and I can recommend them and the sandwiches. Service can be a tad slow so wouldn't advise you to go if your in a hurry as it would be frustrating but otherwise just sit chill and enjoy the food.

I am a regular visitor to this lovely place and on Tuesday I went along with a friend for lunch. I really fancied the cheese and onion quiche, which the menu said came with chips. Trying to watch the weight, I asked the waitress if the chips could be changed for a jacket potato. She thought about it, and without checking with the chief in the kitchen, said yes but would have to charge me an extra £4, the cost of a plain jacket potato!!!! I was rather surprised at this as most cafes are willing to oblige at no extra cost. As you can imagine, I stuck with the chips !! However, When the food came, it was excellent as usual but I would have preferred a jacket potato !!

Typing Room never disappoints. An early evening sitting for the tasting menu and accompanying wine pairings. The nature of the space encourages quiet conversation and the atmosphere seems deliberately a little subdued, but this is by no means a criticism; if you want a bustling bistro-style meal, go to Galvin La Chapelle. The food at Typing Room is invariably an excellent and thought-provoking journey through seasonal dishes, served well. The wine choices were appropriate and well-timed. My main beef with the place is the sad fact that it's closing in the next few weeks. It will no doubt be sorely missed. Whilst the centre of gravity of gastronomic London is moving east, it is an anachronism that Typing Room has chosen to close. So thanks for the memories, Typing Room. I look forward to the next instalment.

Our second trip to the Typing Room having first dined there in May 2016. The food lived up to memories of the first visit and high expectations. Delicious and beautifully presented. Service is attentive but subtle/ in the background and the atmosphere relaxed and warm. Every course was excellent; only disappointment was that many of the courses on the tasting menu were the same. Also there were a few more ‘extras’ back in 2016 (additional snacks, chocolates etc.); though worth mentioning the price has remained the same and I think represents very good value for money.

Lee Westcott's Typing Room is a high end dining experience aimed at the adventuresome foodie who is willing to try something new. The ingredients and dishes are very fresh and often very unique and imaginative. No burgers here! They offer a 3 and 5 course tasting menu which rotates every week or so. The service is top notch. I had a 3 course dinner with an assortment of snacks intermingled between the 3 courses. The first snack was a crispy fried cod skin with oyster and paprika. the second was pig's cheek served with a smoked apple puree. The first course starter was raw scallops served with Jerusalem artichoke , apple and monk's beard. This dish was very tasty but the apple flav or was just a bit overpowering. The Aylesbury duck was served with rhubarb, beet root and juniper and was fantastic. The final course, blood orange , pumpkin brulee and ginger cake was delicious, especially the ginger cake. I really enjoyed the R&B music from the 60's that was played tastefully and unobtrusively on the sound system. The service by Alex and Florent was superb. Both were well informed and very attentive without being interruptive. In short, this was an excellent dining experience. I recommend it if you want to try something different!

My 3rd visit to a place that is one of my favourites. The food was amazing as always, the paired wines worked perfectly with the food. The only thing that let it down on this occasion was that the food was coming too quickly, the course we were on wasn’t always finished when the next arrived and I had to ask twice to slow down. In fairness, from the second ask there was much more space between courses and the service levels improved to the high levels I’m used to from the Typing Room, particularly due to Fred the fabulous sommelier. Still one of my faves and I’ll definitely be back.

Lovely old building, and inside where we dined the kitchen was open so we could see the chefs hard at work. Really nice ambience and had a modern, contemporary feel about it.

The menu doesn't give much away as it only lists the main ingredients so you can't really picture what you'll be eating. Each course was beautifully presented and tasted exceptional. My personal favourites were the trout, plaice and duck. The waiters/waitresses made the effort to explain what we were eating and we felt very looked after - our glass was never empty! We visited the Typing Room during a break to London in celebration of our wedding anniversary. We arrived slightly early for our table and were accommodated and seated early.
I had a long kenny cocktail which was lovely and the absinthe gave it a real sweetness - although it was quite strong as an aperitif, a burst of alcohol to start the meal is never a bad thing though!

We decided to have the set lunch menu which was good value. Many Michelin restaurants do this in the week for a similar price, but not on a Saturday, so it was nice to have this option.

We chose this restaurant for its different choice of ingredients. This wasn’t your usual chicken/lamb and I love game so to see pigeon and hare on the menus online made us decide to visit. I do think that these days, even with a daily menu, it should be on the website and sample menus can sometime mislead - seeing something you like to then be offered something rather different. Fortunately the menu was exactly what we wanted, steak tartare and pigeon.

The freshly baked bread was lovely and although not a fan of marmite, the marmite butter was nice as well.

The food is beautifully presented and you can see the chefs cooking in the kitchen. The head chef seemed to be a perfectionist when it came to plating up - it was good to see him directing his chefs.

Each course was delicious and full of flavour. The courses were perfectly portioned for a lunch and we left just the right side of full.

The service was pleasant and not overbearing. I booked via opentable (very easy) and I selected the box to say this was a special occasion. Most of the time this means nothing but it was acknowledged by the restaurant and they gave us a special treat as a result. We also got a signed menu as a momentous with a personal message printed on it. It is often the little things that make the difference (that ironically don’t cost the establishment any money) and this level of service was noticed. A very enjoyable lunch.

Good but not perfect. Food v similar to Story which we'd been to recently and not quite as awesome.
Really disliked the wine list, over priced and over fussy. We ended up paying a considerable wedge of cash for wines we weren't impressed with. The white recommended by the sommelier was more like cheap flat apple juice and for £60 a bottle you want better. Beautiful building, brilliant park behind for the children, great cricket ground adjacent and stunning views across! The ice cream parlor a short walk up the hill was an added bonus too! (The white horse pub is up the same hill for the thirsty/stressed mums n dad's too, also highly recommended!!) Beautiful stress free part of the area!

A delightful real ale bar with a friendly atmosphere, friendly staff and frequented by a friendly brass band. What more to a bar is there? 😀🎺
