Stayed overnight having attended a local event. Great wee character hotel in beautiful location within easy access to Perth. Rooms are basic, good food and both reasonably priced. Staff are very welcoming, extremely friendly and helpful. Recommend and would return.

We enjoyed dinner at the Macdonald Arms with friends who live in Balbeggie. The service was good, and we really liked the vegetable curry. In fact, the curry was one of the best foods we ate during 10 days in Scotland! In Texas, we tend to eat very spicy food, and most of the food in Scotland tasted under-seasoned and bland. Our first visit to a Scottish pub was wonderful, and we hope to return to the Macdonald arms someday.

We stopped at a little inn Macdonalds on our way out of Perth. Being from America and not understanding the unpredictably of Scottish pubs dinner hours we happened upon this place on our ride back to Ballater. We were pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome from the host who is also the owner and wait staff his wife the cook. I had started of with the hearty potato leek soup that was hot and flavorful. My companion and I both ordered the steak pie which was hearty hot and delicious. The pees were fresh and the mashed potatoes were a good side choice. We finished our meal with sticky toffee pudding that was rich but was paired nicely with fresh ice cream and whipped cream. Macdonalds is a hidden gem in the Scottish countryside.

The chicken burger with Stilton was great as was the chicken stroganoff. A good two mile dog walk from information from the staff, through the fields was a bonus.

Not much has changed since previous visit except that the dining area is a little smaller but is still adequate. Menu remains standard. Portions are fine. Onion rings are monster and were very well received - nicely cooked for their size. All our meals were well cooked and presented. Its not fine dining but neither are the prices.

Pleasant Hotel. A street sign on the street advertises "meals served " Therefore as we are visitors passing through, we thought it would be a nice place to dine. It was and the meal was nice enough. DISSAPOINTING because we were TOLD and it was made very clear that you have to book In advance for a meal. I immediately felt a burden to the owner. We were offered a meal and told to sit in an EMPTY ROOM at the back of the main resteraunt. We sat in isolation away from any ambience the place may have had. We ate our meal and after a while we were asked if any further service was required. Our request for an extra portion of CHIPS was refused!!! Why ask then ? A resteraunt that can't give you extra chips ?. Anyway we were In and out in a hurry. We chose to have our desert in A totally different Cheerier atmosphere. Can't believe we paid full price for a meal and had to MAKE DO in the naughty corner! Think the sign advertising Meals , should state in bold letters. PLEASE BOOK TO AVOID DISSAPOINTMENT

Always a warm welcome, food has never dissapointed and huge portion sizes. If you are in for a full meal, a quick lunch or a pint after work you couldn't find better. Just in for a quick lunch today and totally spot on. Chicken burger as I like it with onion rings on the side. Fantastic service even with preparations underway for roughly 50 people coming in later on! Coming up here for a works christmas night out and can't wait.

Overall OK but nothing special. Local lunch visiting family. Some nice options for smaller appetite. Smallest naan bread ever with the curry but most diners satisfied. Burger plate was small for a pub - thought I had the kiddies version with curly fries. Burger was overdone and the additional side of bacon seemed to have too many microwaves applied. Coleslaw was the nasty catering variety. Most diners were happy. All were suitably fed. Note: The map for this place on TA is incorrect.

We just happened to be passing and were looking for somewhere to stop for dinner and the gamble really paid off :) Brilliant service, great food and a nice atmosphere. I asked for mash instead of chips with my meal and they were more than happy to accomodate, nothing was too much hassle. Chef was maybe a little pepper-happy but maybe that was more noticeable as I'm not a fan of pepper. Otherwise just great :)

Only dropped in for a quick bite to eat and was thoroughly impressed. I had a cheese and pineapple toastie which was noticably melt in the mouth yummy! The salad was super fresh with a very nice dressing and the whole plate was beautifully presented. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I really wanted to stay and try out their dinner menu and will do next time I am in the area! It was also very good value and cost less than I have paid for a similar lunch in a garden centre for example.

Every Thursday, the MacDonald Arms have a Curry Night. We've been several times and can highly recommend it. The curries are beautifully cooked and really tasty, with various degrees of "heat" available. Service is very efficient and friendly. Although it was fairly busy it was quiet and subdued. There is a piano in the corner and I've never heard it played. What a difference this would make.

We called in on passing on a miserable Sunday evening in November. Although the restaurant was quite busy with a couple of groups, we were greeted and seated and our drinks order taken very promptly. Service was friendly and efficient, and our food was served promptly considering it was obviously cooked to order. I chose fish and chips, the chips were excellent and very hot. The fish, however, was a bit disappointing - the batter was excellent where it was thin and crisp, but in places it was too thick and almost doughey. Perhaps because it was Sunday and there had been no delivery of fish, the fish itself was not the best I have had. Madame did however enjoy all of her meal. This was not our first visit to the MacDonald arms, and I had no recollection of being disappointed previously. Perhaps when visiting it is wise to bear in mind what might not be totally freshly bought in.

Strange goings on here recently when my disabled wife and I visited for an evening meal. On arrival at 6pm we were told by waiter/owner that there would be a wait for food. We agreed to have a drink while we waited and ordered steak pie from the menu. At 7.10pm there was still no sign of the food. The place was not particularly busy. By this time a waitress(owner) was fussing around and we explained we had been waiting for over an hour. She said we would be served next and after another 10 minutes she plonked two portions of the steak pie on the table. We had not asked for childrens portions but that was what appeared to be on the plates, small portions of some kind of beef stew with ready made pastry on top and a smattering of puny vegetables and about 8 chips. It looked nothing like the steak pie that we thought we would be getting for £8.50 per portion. My wife commented innocently that this was what she had waited for over an hour for and at that the waitress/owner erupted like a volcano and escorted us from the premises all the while spouting incoherently about the fresh food which had been prepared and the effort which had gone into it. I suppose it was a good bit of cabaret for the other diners but not an experience we would like to repeat anytime soon and indeed we were told not to return. At the age of 65 its a new experience to be ejected from licensed premises, all part of lifes rich tapestry as they say.

We have been here a few times in the last year or two, and have always enjoyed the food on offer. The hosts are always very friendly and welcoming and have pleasant staff. We visited last weekend and we left slightly dissapointed. The dining room was a little on the cold side, and being seated at the window probably didn't help.It seems the portion sizes of the meals (and crockery) have shrunk considerably, although we all enjoyed what we had. The haddock was lovely and fresh with homemade chips, and steak pie good also. it was the size of the portions that let it down. I tend not to have a starter when i see sticky toffee pudding on the menu and know from previous visits this is outstanding here although on this visit was ok. It has been changed from a slice to individual serving and this was a little hard around the edges. I could have easily had three courses.

If you look for a pub where the proprietors care about service and atmosphere then this is the place for you. You can either stay in the bar with the locals or eat in the choice of two separate areas. The food is freshly prepared to your requirements and is excellent value. Curries are particularly good and prepared to your taste. There is always one real ale available ( Youngs, Courage, Wells ) and pride is taken in their condition. I do not understand one of the recent reviews as it does not represent this pub in any way as I am sure others will vouch.

Cycled out to this hotel. Service was good, so was the beer. Good surroundings etc. I did not try the normal food on the menu and its probably fine. I was attracted by the Ploughmans special expecting something nice. I was disappointed. It was OK but nothing remarkable. I am not a fan of white bread and there were two thin slices. I asked for some extra crusty bread, bread rolls and brown rolls but was given more white bread, so I sent it back. A person then appeared who I took to be the owner or Manageress. She appeared quite defensive and was unapologetic for providing no alternatives. This appeared to be because it was explained to me that it was home made bread. And as far as home made bread is concerned, I am sure its fine. But no choice of brown bread or brown rolls struck me as a bit behind the times.

The location, the restaurant, the staff and the food are all excellent. My partner and I had a truly wonderful Sunday lunch and each dish (cheese souffle, John Dory and blueberry pana cotta) worthy of 10 out of 10. scores. My only concern is that the 25% increase in the price may deter future customers.
