Don’t be fooled by the slightly odd appearance, if you can look past the fruit machines at the front of the restaurant this place serves excellent South Indian and Sri Lankan food at great prices. Our friends go often and it’s always a laugh. Highlights are the masala dosa, mutton curry and the thalis. An unassuming gem in Walthamstow.

Just had prawn curry very tasty. Then I not Eve the do does as well. Have to come back for than. Family welcoming restaurant. Lots of local mums popping in with proms and babies clearly enjoying the food and the ambiance. I managed to get a lot of writing done on me thesis. So a happy girl. Kumasi graciously and patiently served and greeted big groups and small. I’m looking forward to come back for dosa.

Over the last few years this has become one of my regular eating places after work when I need to be in Walthamstow after work. When I first moved to North London, I was very pleased to find a restaurant that served authentic masala dosas. It is fair to say that some of the best dosas that I have had outside of South India have been here. On several occasions I have taken visitors who are more used to your standard fare from a Balti or curry house. They have always loved the food and wanted to come back for more. If you want poppadoms and dips, you will need to ask for them as the waiting staff will not automatically assume that you are going to want them. Visitors who grew up in Tamil Nadu were jealous that I had such a great South Indian restaurant near me. On my last visit this week I had chicken Kothu roti. The portion size was very generous and tasted great. The staff are keen to give you the correct spice level that you want. I would highly recommend the paneer masala dosa, the biryani (although if you are vegetarian let them know, if you are ordering an egg biryani as in the past I have had chicken in my egg biryani), the vegetarian thali and the dhal curry. As I eat there midweek, I can order two courses and eat them in under an hour due to the fact that the food comes promptly. If it looks like I am not in a rush, the service slows down to a more leisurely pace so that I can either chat or get paperwork done. If you are in a rush at the end, they are not put out if you just go to the till to pay. In my opinion the food is great value for money!

Dropped in here for a quick bite before the cinema the other day. Have just moved to the area and was delighted to find that there’s a Sri Lankan restaurant in walthamstow, as they’re few and far between. Hadn’t read any reviews so was surprised that some of them were a touch lukewarm.... We found the service to be efficient and warm, food arrived quickly, was tasty and reasonably priced. We particularly enjoyed the daal curry and lamb kotthu roti. We’ll definitely be back and would happily recommend to anyone wanting something other than a bog standard curry. Also looks good for vegetarians.....

My wife has eaten here recently, with a party of 10, and was raving about the dosa's so we popped in for dinner and thought we would give the thali's a try. The welcome was not exactly warm, we had to call the waiter to place our order, and our food was delivered to our table by the waiter who was one the phone at the same time, not exactly great service. BUT the food was absolutely fantastic, we both had thali's and they had a great range of really authentic tasting dishes and very ample portions. Would happily return any day for the food.

I have lived in Walthamstow for 3 years and Priya Maamalas has always been my take away of choice. However last night it was really disappointing and I will not be ordering from then again. The Palak Paneer was clearly tinned spinach and was watery and tasteless and the Dahl looked to have baked beans in it! Not the delicious food I have had from them in the past.

In fact so much so that the menu could do with a little explanation for those of us more used to the standard issue Northen ibdian style curry house. The food was very good, the décor unimpressive and the staff friendly but pretty useless. I'd say that it has the makings of something quite special in terms of the food but they need to get the restaurant inspector in to sort out the business side of things. Try the Kotthu Roti for something that I haven't seen anywhere else in the UK.

I feel like I'm still waiting for my food.... Was going to an event at 10pm, so me and three friends went to Maamalas at 8pm for a meal. After ordering drinks, we were expecting a few starters and popadoms to be offered. We had to ask for popadoms half an hour after ordering our food. We thought maybe it was an oversight and didn’t think much of it. It then became apparent, this is how it is done at Maamalas. Our starters came around 9pm, an *hour* after we ordered them, and our meal came at around half 9. Our meals not only came ridiculously late, but in drips and drabs. We ordered three curry dishes, one portion of rice, and three different naan breads. This came to the table over the course of about 15 minutes, meaning that after an hour and a half wait, our food got to us with parts of it cold. The entire experience was sour, and made even worse by really appalling customer service. During the hour and a half wait, no staff came to apologise for the wait. Not acknoewlodegdment at all. When we'd finished our meal, we complained to the man seeming to be running the shop. Not only was he unapologetic for the service and the half-cold food, not to mention the 1hour 30 m wait, but when we said we wouldn't pay for the meal in full, he started arguing. The entire ordeal finished with us offering to pay for the drinks. We eventually stormed out without paying, as did other customers throughout the long wait. I certainly won’t be going back there anytime soon! You simply can’t run a restaurant like that.

Food was ok but had been better in the past. We come here regularly with a big family group. Part of us from Sri Lanka. They had a different chef I believe and were initially not busy when we came so starters came fast. Then the restaurant got busy and it took forever for our mains to arrive. The food was mainly good still but waiting over 1.5 hours between courses was too much. We also had a small baby with us and did not expect to stay that late. Staff was definitely not up for being that busy, we had to remember them several times of our drinks before we got them. The female waitress doesn't understand a lot of english she had to get the other waiter every time we asked for something. They need to get more staff for restaurant and kitchen to get back to the previous standard!

Used to be my favourite Indian in Walthamstow, however due to last two visits I am writing this review. Service takes far two long - 2 hours before main meal is served from taking order is not on. Unlike the previous times when food was the saving grace, our starter was burnt and even though we stated that we wanted mild, the main course was very hot. On the upside, the staff did return the dishes and bring out milder ones. However, we won't be visiting here. Such a shame as it is our local Indian and does South Indian/ Sri Lankan food too.

With my husbands family originally coming from Sri Lanka we know how traditional Sri Lankan food should taste like. And we love this place! have been there for several family gatherings in the past and the food is great. Value for money and big portions so we can usually take some home too.We always share a selection of starters and mains, bread and rice and kothu roti which is my favourite. Dosa is usually great too- last time it was too salty but they just took it off the bill, no questions asked. The only thing I am missing on the extensive menu is hoppers! I'd love to see them on the menu one day!If you fancy great and spicy Sri Lankan food- that's the place to go in London!

Myself and my family is quite picky where we eat and what we eat. In the last 6 months, I have been ordering from Maamalas restaurant once every month. Last night, I have eaten the best of food from that restaurant. I have been eating indian food from childhood. This restaurant is worth the penny and the taste of each of its dishes were fantastic. I have no reason to complain. They might have an excellent chef. For some dishes, I asked them to make it mild, they did it. I can taste every flavour from the food. Excellent. Well done. We ordered the following, Masala Dosa, Paneer Tikka, Tadka dall, Rasam, Sambar, papadom, chola poori.
