Staff more concerned about chatting to their mates than actually serving customers. Unless you're a regular there I wouldn't bother.

Came here for a drink on a Sunday evening. Had visited before on occasion, but decided to try outside this time, surprised by the size and appearance of the outside area, will come out again on a nice evening. However the most surprising thing was the amount of snails and in particular slugs in the planters! Absolutely LOADS! Kept us entertained although I imagine others may not be as enthusiastic! Irritatingly the beer garden shut at 9.30ish. Would deffo come again and get a table next to a sluggy planter!

The Royal Oak in Woodford is a gem. A long-established pub with great charm. In the front area it is classic pub style, you order at the counter. Further back is the restaurant area with table service. There is also a partially covered outdoor area. We stayed there for 5 nights in May 2024. Our room was directly above the pub, so it was very noisy well into the night. In addition, there were only blinds so it was bright in the room. But with oropax and sleeping mask it wasn't a problem and we slept very well. The room was small but nicely decorated and clean. The staff consists of a young team, everyone was very friendly and accommodating. During the week there was a simple but delicious cold breakfast. At the weekend we had a warm breakfast - typically English with beans, fried potatoes and the like. We also had dinner in the pub most evenings and it was really good. We traveled by public transport - the 'Highham Parks' overground station is a few minutes' walk from the pub. I recommend buying an Oystercard. You load this with credit and use it to check in before the trip and then check out again afterwards. You can also do this with the EC card, but at least for me there would be daily fees. The journey from the station to Liverpool Street Station in central London is around half an hour and the train runs approximately every 15 minutes. We also started from there to Warner Bros. Studios. There is a supermarket right next to Higham Parks station. For us, the pub was a very good compromise between proximity to the center, price and comfort and I can fully recommend it.

We wife and I stayed at the Royal Oak on the Sunday of the early May bank holiday, we used to life in Highams Park and used to go there. We were visiting and decided to stay as we have never been in the rooms. The rooms are perfect for a short stay, clean, freshly decorated and modern. The biggest surprise was the quality of the beds, really comfy and slept well. It was a hot night and we stayed on the second floor and the fan was great to keep cool. No issues at all. We had a few drinks before we left for our night out. Staff amazing as always, they were always brilliant when we lived here, lots of new faces, but still the great hospitality given. Lots of subtle changes, Guinness was better and poorer to perfection, caught me off guard, I love a Guinness and this was the best I’ve had in a long time. We also had some lunch which again standard was just as good. The only watch out is the size of the rooms, I can’t speak for all the rooms as we stayed on the top floor, it was very small, the bathroom door hit the bed so you had to squeeze through, but to be honest it’s not a deal breaker just worth noting if your on a longer stay. I would absolutely and will be staying again.

Update: I have to update this because they offer a really poor selection of Gluten free food. This is something that is not hard to offer. Other local pubs like The Larkshall do GF fish and chips and roast dinners - and honestly are so knowledgeable compared to the staff at Royal Oak. So disappointing that they haven’t got this right when they often have a really decent GF beer on tap. Baffling. This is pretty much the perfect pub. It has an excellent selection of beers, perfect decor, staff are knowledgeable and really welcoming and friendly and it has a nice vibe inside and out. Only ways it could be better would be something to entertain kids outside and some green veg with the roasts.

I don't usually post reviews but I am super delighted with this site. The staff is completely friendly and always with a smile. The place is very quiet and although they have the pub below they close at a more than reasonable hour, leaving complete silence. The breakfast is quite good, so much so that we planned to have breakfast outside every day and the first day we were in a hurry, we tried it and we only had breakfast here. And the pub food is pretty good too. In general the place seems very good to me but I really like the staff completely. I don't usually write reviews, but I am delighted with this place. The staff is extremely friendly and always smiling. The place is very quiet, and although there is a pub downstairs, they close at a very reasonable hour, leaving complete silence. Cannot recommend this place enough. The pub itself is really nice, the rooms are lovely, and the staff are friendly. It’s also fantastic value for money for London. We booked outside of London central, because I wanted to take my friend to Gods Own Junkyard (awesome place). But, having stayed here, even though it’s a bit of way out I’d totally stay here when all my plans are central London based in the future. It’s so much nicer than some of the places we’ve paid a lot more for in the centre, that’s it’s worth the short trek in and out. My top tip to make the trip in/out of London central nippier is to get an taxi/uber (£8) to and from Walthamstow Central tube station, it cuts loads off your travel time taking out the local train and a short walk. Having said that though, if you’re in no rush, it’s stil a pleasant journey, just a little longer. I almost don’t want to leave this review because I don’t want this little gem to be fully booked next time I’m off to London lol. Highly recommend.

Great pub inside and outside; very helpful staff; and the "Er-hacktulee-i-er-just-moved-to-Hi-hams-apark-vya-Awesomestow, YA..." will love this E4 pub...feels like it's targetting the middle-class thirty/forty- somethings who've traded Stoke Newington flat for E4 house and first baby. The locals and fellow diners are a good bunch, friendlier than in the noughties. Decent beers; arty Tottenham Outrage mural outside... a very likable building inside and out and worth a visit if you're walking in the Forest. Sunday lunch we ate was: good. Not great but better than average. Decent portions but chewy roast meat with half-hearted veg disguised under a good gravy; speedy service we received was unusual and suggested the pub is very popular with locals on a Sunday, so the food is all cooked prior to you walking in and placing orders. Table we reserved was small for group of six but cosy - the booth-like seating makes the acoustics excellent... I suppose it's the Royal Oak's atmosphere that makes it worth paying £20 a main dish for but not the food itself. Decor and atmosphere - 5/5 Staff and service - 5/5 Food - 3/5 Value - 3/5 Kids and dog suitability - 5/5 Overall: Great pub worth visiting for a meal with friends/family/dogs and it might be even better with its non-Sunday lunch menu. Recommended daytime venue.

Georgia went above and beyond in coordinating the planning of our event and answering my never ending list of questions. Kelly and the team were so friendly and attentive on the day and the night before. All our guests commented on how lovely the food was and the team at the Royal Oak worked with us to create a menu for our special day. It was great value for money and felt very bespoke. The private area was just perfect for the size of our wedding party, the staff joined in the fun too, dancing the night away while still keeping up excellent levels of bar service. Several of our party ourselves included stayed in the guest house and the rooms were wonderful and Saturday mornings breakfast was a real tasty treat. Thank you for everything Mr & Mrs Andrews

Went for a Sunday roast after recommendations from local WhatsApp group. One of the worst Sunday roasts I've had. Beef was overcooked, tough, and chewy. The broccoli, meant to be al dente, was rock solid. My knife could barely cut through it. Two measley pieces of carrots and they charge for extra veg. Dry and hard roast potatoes. The only good parts were the service, the ambience of the pub, the drinks, and the gravy. My partner had the lamb and wasn't impressed. He said the cauliflower cheese lacked seasoning and taste. If I lived locally I would drink there as it's a lovely pub, but definitely wouldn't return for the roast.

Beautiful goats cheese salad, skinny fries and the most amazing New Zealand Sauvignon wine for lunch today served by a really lovely lady called Kelly. Nothing was too much trouble. Great food, amazing service. First class!

I ordered fish and chips and a kebab portions were vast ,would have one fish and chips for two people . Curry sauce thick and gloopy, mushy peas ok. Had to construct kebab myself, pitta not cooked and dry foil container with meat salad in a plastic container and two tiny containers of chilli sauce and garlic sauce. They didn’t ask me what sauces I wanted or salad and just gave me it all in a bag even though I was standing there waiting for twenty minutes, so fish and chips good but vast , kebab dry and diy, I don’t live in London so was a bit surprised at £40 bill, I did order medium portions .

What an experience - A six course Latin American taster in a refurbished 1967 Victoria tube train that was amazing. From the unique environment to the authentic food made by the Head chef, Beatriz, who explained her inspiration and heritage for each of the dishes. Each plate was beautifully presented without the pretentious nonsense, layers of flavours and textures, which left you wanting more. Service by our waiter, Chris, also added to the overall experience too, which just made it even more special. Food and drinks flowed with ease throughout the evening, as lasted about 2.5 hours. Easy to get to and parking nearby was free after 6.30pm, so safe walking to and from in the dark.

Very friendly staff, great food and the pub is very homely with its coal fire and stained glass windows. Would highly recommend!

The restaurant has closed. After 17 odd years, they couldn't make it work. But all is not lost. Check out the (once was) Spanish bar next door which is also going through a change with new owners. Eat17 Itself is being refurbished to open as a bar.
