Love Ma Po tofu- food is always prepared and delivered really quickly, there's a nice space to eat inside and the taste is delicious. It's also very reasonably priced.

We ordered a takeaway from Ma Po yesterday evening. The quality of this food was surprisingly bad - the chicken was mushy, the beef was very stringy, and the aubergine and green beans dish was very greasy. None of the dishes were very flavoursome, and each one was lukewarm. Probably one of the worst Chinese takeaways I've tried. Expensive for what you get too.

¡Definitivamente volvere!

So we decided to look for a restaurant that caters HOTPOT and seeing we didn't fancy travelling far up to China town we found this little hidden place. First time going there and saw photos of the restaurant beforehand on line so when we arrived we knew what we were expecting. The restaurant does need abit of TLC or maybe decoration to make the atmosphere better. Staffing was friendly and quick. Location good not far from Canada water station and free parking after 6.30pm outside the restaurant. We had hotpot 2 soup chicken broth (tasty) / spicy Sichuan broth (very spicy)It's cheaper than other places I've been too. The choices were good. It's a odd set up because normally you would have a ticket to prefer your hotpot ingredients but instead the waiter takes your order ( you can pick 8 items at a time and is a buffet ) We also ordered beef fried noodles, wor tip (fried dumplings) and sweet and sour chicken both dishes was tasty and would recommend.Question is would I have back. I would and definitely bring my friends down.Thumbs up if you find this helpful.

Really awful experience. We live locally so thought we’d give it a try but never again. We were served by a totally disengaged lad who made little effort to understand what we wanted and made a number of mistakes with the order with no apologies offered. It wasn’t until after we paid that we realised they add service to the bill or we would have refused to pay it. Worst of all was the food which tasted like it had been microwaved - my partner and I had the same thing (beef and black bean sauce) and had upset stomachs for 36 hours. We will never risk eating anywhere without a food hygiene rating again.

I have been to that restaurant on Sunday the 17th of July with my boyfriend. It was a hot sunny day and we were looking forward our meal, as we both love Sichuan food.We first selected our drinks : he took glass a coca cola and I took an honey lemon tea, which was advertised under the section named “ICED COFFEE & TEA”The waitress barely listened/looked at my partner when he ordered for us. She then came back 2 minutes later with a coke and a boiling hot cup of tea!We tried to explain I ordered this because I thought it was iced because of the way it is written on their menu, and that I did not want to drink something that hot. She answered that it is “Iced coffee.. and regular tea”, and that it was too late and she left. Another waiter came round to take our food order a few minutes later, and we attempted to explain him what just happened (hoping he would accept to return my cup and bring me a real iced tea!), unfortunately he did not seem to understand a word, and brought us the bill.We paid, left without touching our drinks, and we are now determined we would never be back.Like I said their menu was confusing, I admit I did not check with the waitress before I ordered if the tea was hot or cold because for me there was no need to. At the end of the day it is only a cup of tea (Boiled tap water with a tea bag in it), they could have exchange it and they would not have lost two hungry customers.Very disappointed.

There are few dishes on the menu that I always suggest to my european friends who are scared of szechuan pepercorns and chilli- gong bao checken, stir friend tender beef with egg and ear fungus, stir fried shredded pork with enoki mushrooms and similar. The seafood udon noodle soup was absolutley diabolical, warm and oily, some of those artificial crab sticks were submerged, along with some other parts of almost unidentifiable seafood, that were just like chewing rubber. This is one place I will not be returning to, better off nearby at the Surrey Docks with a good curry, or Wagamamas in the Wharf for proper noodle soup.

If you are looking for a romantic restaurant with amazing decor, ambience and service then this is not the right place for you. Other reviewers have complained about the 'rude' service but I disagree. The service is fine - the food comes quickly, each dish when it is ready. You don't get the same full on service as you do in western style restaurants with the staff coming and checking up on you, but if you want something you just ask! I highly recommend the deep fried salt and pepper chilli squid!

We go to this place quite often- less now that my bf has moved away from Surrey Quays. The food has always been tasty. We've never had any problems anyway. Our favourites are the gong bao chicken, salt &pepper squid and spicy beef. For us it's the right amount of spicy- the duck in beer is probably just about pushing the limit. And also, there is plenty to eat for people who don't like spicy food. What I like about this place is that it is not like every other Chinese take-away that only offer special fried rice and spring rolls...The staff are... different. There is one lady we really like - she always greets us when we come in and for my bf's bday she even gave us free dessert which was nice. Because we go there quite often we have asked her for advice on dishes and what we should try next and she's always been very helpful. The rest are not as welcoming but it doesn't bother me really.I mean, yes, there is a lack of any decor pretty much and the rest of the staff could be friendlier but for what you get and what you pay.. I think it's quite cheap, the food is yummy and we'll definitely keep going back.

Surrey Quays is a rather unloved part of London and this restaurant, located on the main drag, seems to reflect the area. Service is, however, cheerful and efficient and the joint was (encouragingly) dominated by oriental customers the night we went. It's definitely not a destination for the ambiance though and there is an air of neglect at least in the section where we sat - discarded bits and pieces on an unused bar alongside, a burnt out light bulb overhead and a Formica table as backdrop to our meal. (The two reserved tables did have table cloths.) To be fair to the kitchen we did not go with what is the main culinary attraction - the hotpot, where you choose from a good range of ingredients and cook for yourself at a modest price (there's an all you can eat option for less than GBP 20 pp). That said, our alternatives were all over the place in terms of both taste and texture - the har gau pastry was far too thick, the stir fried whelks far too chewy (though the lotus root in the latter was fine) whilst the chili squid was excellent and the morning glory in oyster sauce delicious. The portions were quite large and the Tsingtao was nicely cold.

Mostly Chinese/Asians eat here, seems popular with them, and you can tell why. The place offers delicious authentic Szechuan Chinese food. As a Chinese person, I love it. The tastes are spicy, varied, and delicious as they should be. Szechuan is spicy also in the hot chilli sense. I've had the hot pot, which is divine. Dry stir fry vegetables, and tofu appetizer are excellent. For food, I would give this 5*. Overall, the service is average for a Chinese restaurant, to the point and down to business. Don't expect to be spoiled. Environment is ok, busy, noisy Chinese restaurant with no frills. Prices are ok for taste and quantity. Just go for the tasty authentic Szechuan Chinese food. And you'll enjoy it.

The food was spicy Szechuan. Szechuan peppers in plenty, also there was lots and lots of chilly oil (£1.50 a jar from any asian supplier). Fun to eat, makes the eyes water and the nose run. At the third time of asking a waitress picked up some paper serviettes. She looked in her hand and put one back. The remaining two were handed over to the three of us.The place was dingy, furniture stacked up by the toilets at the back. Authentically South-East Asian. No money wasted on decor and no effort at serviceWell authentically South-East asian until the bill £72 for three without wine in SE16, don't be daft.

Having moved to the area recently we were excited to find a local Asian restaurant. We were soon horribly dissapointed. The service was rude and we felt unwelcome. The food was average, there are plenty of Chinese places in the area that serve much better food. Then came the time to pay. When we gave them our card and it fully charged they said it didn't work. Eventhough it was clear it already charged. They said they don't accept signature cards. So they demanded cash. Now that the card statements have come out it was clear that they did charge us already!! Outrageous. They also refused to give us the card receipt that actually went through! We will go back asap and demand a refund.

Please ignore the review entitled "oh dear" they could not be more wrong. My girlfriend and I discovered this little gem a few months back. We went in and flicked open the menu expecting the normal type of Chinese food (pancakes, chow mein...ect) Instead we found a totally different type of cuisine. You know why? Because this is an authentic Chinese restaurant, serving proper Chinese grub. You can still get the normal type of English stuff at the back of the menu.Yes - you need a little help with the menu. However, when we asked for them to recommend a few dishes, the staff we very willing to help. The food is amazing. It took less than 20 minutes to be served. A real taste explosion. My eyes have been totally opened to real Chinese cooking. The Hot pot is amazing. You know you are on to winner at this place as a lot of Chinese people eat here. It's clean and bright....maybe turn the Chinese pop music down a little...but apart from that. It's great. one of my favorite restaurants in London without a doubt.

If you wanna face an amazing horrible experience that's the right place for you! I've been here with my sister looking for a nice dinner but we found a place that looks very very neglected and dirty. First of all the menu is so hard to understand. So many dishes, not an explanation which sometimes when you're eating Asian food, you need! The service was sad..i mean one of the guy was wearing an hat, they were cold and unfriendly. We ask for some pork dumplings and they came raw. When we said that and show them to the waitress, she tried to make me look stupid like "you don't understand, they are cooked but steamed"..yes thanks but the meat was still live! So we had some "new" but you can really taste old meat.. disgusting. All the shop looked neglected and messy. I will never come back and would never suggest to anyone.

Had the spicy pot (you choose which ingredients to have). Was really impressed, decent portion, and really tasty grub! The squid was especially good! For the price of the beers, you would expect a bigger bottle though...

I popped into the Ma Po for lunch when I was passing. There were very few customers and now I think I know why! The food was average and the service was poor. I received the Main Course while I was having my soup. Luckily it was a warm day or it would have gone cold before I would have had a chance to eat it. The quality of the food was average. When I was given the Bill (before asking for it!) I left my Debit Card down. I was told they did not take cards, only cash. Fortunately I had just enough cash to pay the bill but unfortunately not enough for a tip. The Restaurant had the usual 'Cards Accepted' sign on the window. A disappointing experience!, a pity as I love Sichuan dishes!

I came here with my family, we were in the area and thought it looked like a good place to eat. We left shocked. From the moment we entered the behaviour of the staff towards us was cold and uninviting. Dishes and cutlery were dumped onto our tables rather than placed. Our meals arrived at separate times, one of them very late. Some of the cutlery was dirty. We were unattended throughout our meal, nobody came to check that we were OK.Even requesting the bill felt like we had asked them to do a chore. A big - far from deserved - service charge was added without our notice (this was removed when I questioned it).As we left and said thank you and goodbye there was no response, just cool eyes following us out the door. Terrible experience, never again.

if you are a fan of the sichuan food, that's the place. I have visited this place for dinner and we have indulged in a quite wide range of spicy food such as: mapu tofu, spicy kung pal chicken, sichuan-style minced green beens and some remarkable dandy noodles. The atmosphere was nice and the stuff pretty helpful. There is a 6 pound special deal for lunch from mon-fri. I will definitely be back!
