M A Somerton Fish Bar in Newport

Food here usually excellent, & huge portions. But last week, the chips were limp & not crispy, and so greasy, the oil poured onto the plate when I dished them up, yuck.

This fish bar is an absolute joke. after finishing college today i went in to get a kebab. i wasn’t served for five minutes despite there being only one other customer. i ordered a mixed meat and chips. after getting home with my food i found my food cold, the chips were hard and stale, the chicken donner was chicken tikka and the worst part was that i found a hair in my food!! i then rang to enquire about a refund for my food. after being on the phone for five minutes trying to get this refund i was told they could not understand me and they would ring me back in five minutes. i waited 15 minutes with no call so decided to ring again. i explained the situation once again and they hung up the phone. i then rang again and as soon as they heard my voice they hung up. third time they declined my call. please do not order from here. this was my first and last time ever placing an order here. i am disgusted.

The chicken madras half and half is very good I would recommend it

Good portion freshly cooked fish and chips will use again and did use again and will use again

Excellent beef pie and chips for me and a pasties and chips for my wife. Nice chips but 1 portion was enough for 2 people. Nice Chinese curry sauce. Recommend

Order food got my order wrong went bk change my order and they still got it wrong and they tried charging me an extra £1 aswell pure joke

Order cod and chips twice .when it came there were no chips .so phoned them to be told I only ordered fish costing £23

Gorgeous food. Just please check or don’t sent delivery person who is afraid of dogs - we have a golden retriever. Woof 🙄

Food was amazing and lots of flavour, good size portion too.

I had what was advertised as chicken korma , it was something I'm thankful never going to eat again, it was terrible, no korma taste just a really strong sugary taste, really sugary

Somerton Road fish and chips are the best in Newport ,the fish is cooked to perfection .Wouldn't buy fish and chips anywhere else love it ..

Won't be ordering from here again waited hour and 20 minutes and i rang up to find out where my food was and they said they haven't even cook my food they are joke never again will be ordering from here again.

Happen to try this fish and chips on the off chance. Wish I had driven further and gone elsewhere wouldnt visit again. food was stale chips were inedible had a strange old oil taste would not recommend.

Fish and chip shop disgusting I have ordered two times from the shop and the food has came disgusting once I ordered the meat has been smelly and off date me and my 2 kids were sick for 2 days 🤬 second time I order I found hair in my kebab the shop needs to be closed down because they are going to poisonous people 😡🤬

Been using this fish and chip shop a while now, they seem to have the best beans, cheese and chips, until my visit yesterday. Food was cold, my partner had a sausage and it was stone cold. Very disappointed will not be using this fish and chip shop again

Fast food going well. Super chips and so many of them.. An organised little fish shop doing well producing good food.

Great freshly cooked food with generous portions and if you like hot and tasty curry sauce this might be the Chippie for you!

Bought a small kebab and chips, kebab was served by hand onto the tray and then microwaved, had a bad stomach since then Will not go again

What a disgrace they need closing down £34 for cold horrible tasteless food oh not forgetting they forgot to deliver the CHIPS i mean come on..... you order fish and chips and least send the chips?????? But seriously STAY AWAY the staff are rude and the food is disgusting close to inedible. The fish is over cooked dry just horrible. This place has upset so much i want to stand in the doorway stopping people going in..

Went for a bag of chips for a early supper, wish I hadn't !!! All bits of broken and burnt bits, should never have served them up

Wow the fish was disgusting, the batter was hard like resin and the chips were black... this has got to be by far the worst fish and chips I've ever eaten, the food was just so disappointing. The chips were like stale and chewy.... please never order from here. Save yourself the stomach upset

Cheap and cheerful.... I'm not from Newport but have ordered a few times when down here for work. I begrudge spending large amounts of money so find them good value... particularly if you've gone to work but forgotten lunch lol. Not one for takeaways but I'd recommend this place to anyone local to the area.

Today's experience of ordering via Uber eats was worthy of 1* only - no one takes responsibility for the driver not being able to find the delivery address which is less than 5 minutes away from the fish shop Awarded 2* ontop of the disaster of today because the food here is good BUT only collect in person

1hour and 10 minutes for delivery of stone cold food when living less than 10 minute drive from the chip shop is rediculous. First time ordering and defo the last.

We placed an order on their website for collection. They just handed our order over. This order was totally wrong, so we phoned up and promised a new order within 30 mins. Waiting over an hour now and still be lied to. Avoid at all costs!!

Comfortably the biggest portion of chips I've ever been served. Could feed three easily.

Food was aweful.It tasted as if it had a funny taste to it like the oil was weeks old.Had such a strange taste.put me off fish and chips and wish id stuck to my local chippy. I rang to tell them the food wasnt right and they were adament to deliver more food as a replacement. They promised me a refund.I said i dont want more food but they said we will make fresh food and you can have that. The food came and looked better but still tasted strange so that went in the bin. No refund.really disappointed.

Ordered cod & chips for delivery. Fantastic large piece of cod, plenty of chips in fact excellent, reasonably priced even with delivery charge so all in all great service. Will definitely using them again!

If you actually want to eat then don’t bother ordering! We ordered our food at 6:45 with an expected delivery time of 7:30! After waiting over an hour we called Somerton to be told our order had been cancelled as they couldn’t find my address! they reassured me they would then send out the order within the next 15 to 20 minutes! IT NEVER ARRIVED! I am so disgusted with the ‘service’ Ended up driving to kfc at 9:00pm 👍🏼

The food is always really good and the staff are really friendly. We mostly have delivery and they are always on time and the food it always hot

Had the fish and chip meal deal was disgusting the fish and chips had a terrible twang to them definitely the oil that was used it went straight in bin will never order from here again waste of money

Quick stop here after shopping at Tesco. Kids wanted a cone of chips on the way home..... However the chips were not nice. Tasted like the oil hasn’t been changed in the last few weeks like a burnt soggy chip taste stuck in the back of the gullet. Wouldn’t eat From here again sorry....!

Absolutely grim. The worst fish and chips I've had in Newport. Chips were uncooked and had no colour. The fish although cooked on the inside the batter was wet and sticky. THE Curry sauce was too thin and tasted of nothing but water. I'm not surprised as when I was there they were serving there other "specialties" which included, but probably not limited to Kebabs, Pizza, Indian food, and English food. If you want Dim Sum, Caribbean, Thai, Mexican, or food from the Democratic Republic of Congo just ask I'm sure they will splodge it together in no time.

Really enjoy using this chippy, lovely selection of traditional chip shop foods plus curries and kebabs. The meal deals are not expensive and are nicely portioned for kids and adults. Much cheaper to order directly from them instead of using Just Eat. Totally recommend this chip shop.

Best fish in a long time and chips can't fault them , keep up the good work 😋

Just had the special box meal and it was beautiful,i collected and took home and was very happy that is was still hot,there was enough food to feed 6 of us with some left over lol the only downside was the garlic bread was rock hard but everything else was cooked perfectly. Definitely recomend

Family owened, gent is chiroy and lady is nice, a warm welcome with lots of traditional foods.

Only had chips and they were rank, if I hadn't been rushing against the clock I would have returned them and ask for a refund

Very Good Indian take out at a reasonable price. They do Fish and Chips as well and are open seven days a week.

it's not a real fish shop like before it it was great when mark & Marie had it so clean and tastes great :)
