Over a period of time my self and family members always stayed here for few nights. Went for a few nights stay last year in November and in all honesty it will be the last time. Was it because they were short staffed I don't know.!!!! But what a difference from previous ownership. Really pleasent on arrival but from there on everything seemed to be too much trouble. Probably didn't help as kitchen was out of order but found a cafe across the road named Fanny's where the welcome and service was exceptional. The rooms were ok (spacious) as usual 👌👍but heatings were a nightmare to work. When asking the owner how they work it seemed too much trouble showing us but once switched on they would take several hours to work.. not good enough really on a cold December night. Even when asking for more coffee sachets and milk and sugar it seemed too much. Don't get me started on the towels from the bathroom. 2 towels were expected to last us for 2 days with a family of 3 and only 1 tap would work which was the cold one. Couldn't get out there quick enough if I'm honest once the 3rd day was up. For the price for a 3 night stay you expect a little bit more. Miss the previous ownership and I'm expecting these standards to be improved although I won't be going back there that's for sure. 2 stars from me and that's because we had a roof over our heads. Shape up or ship out ❌⭐⭐

We went for the first time tonight trying a Groupon deal 2 courses for 2 for 25 pound and what a brilliant deal it was!! The service was relaxed , friends and had a personal touch which was refreshing. The interior is amazing , what a beautiful building. And the food , well amazing . Fresh , tasty and satisfying. We would both definitely return . thanks for a lovely evening.

We stayed here for one night and while the beds were comfortable the valance was dirty with brown marks on it! There was a filthy fan in the wardrobe which did not work and disappointed as there were only a few basic channels on the tv and it wasn’t HD.

A bit rough around the edges but the foods really good! Some odd choices on the menu but everything we ordered was very tasty. Service could be improved as the two occasions we have been the meals have been served up to 10 minutes apart meaning the first to get served has their meal go cold whilst waiting for the others to arrive. Both times its been quiet in there which was quite nice but can't help thinking for the same price you could go to somewhere nicer.

Prior to walking over the Transporter Bridge (across the road), we decided to pop into The Waterloo Hotel for a swift one. The minute I walked in, I was captivated. Going back to Wales. Yes I thought. Waterloo hotel was the chosen venue. First impressions, oldie worldly. A step back in time, with the flooring, posters and bar.Parking for a few cars through a archway, plenty of parking locally. Staff amazing, friendly and well informed and very helpfully. Unfortunately there are a few down points. Water left in the kettle. When was the last time the room was used? Had the people before used the kettle?Lip of bath panel was grubby and the heated towel rail had been removed ,partly, with sharp edges remaining.Lastly. There was a wedding at the hotel, no problem at all, until we were asked to stay in one section of the bar, as the wedding party were using the rest of the bar. Again no problem. The problem came when the party could and did come into the section of the bar we were restricted too, and used all the tables. We would not have changed our plans if we knew of the wedding however, we might, if we knew about the restrictions.

The Waterloo has been superbly restored and elegantly decorated. The service was excellent - efficient but non-intrusive (how refreshing not to have one's conversation interrupted by an insincere "is everything OK?"). Everything was spotlessly clean. The menu was restricted - a good sign, in my experience, because it means the food will be fresh. Everything was nicely cooked, and the vegetables pleasantly al dente. Good value as well. I strongly recommend this restaurant.

I had a meal at The Waterloo when it first opened after refurbishment, it wasn't so great so I didn't go back again. We had some friends over from New York, so it's always difficult to please Manhattanites as they are so spoiled. The Waterloo was equal distance from where we live and where they were staying, so we took a chance. We had a lovely warm greeting as if we were long lost friends, had a drink at the bar while we ordered our food. We were sat when the starters were ready. Everything was delicious, perfectly cooked and served with a smile. I regret not having giving it a second chance until now. I shall be back soon!

Had an overnight before a meeting and this hotel was a good price at £65 B&B. Don't be put off by other reviewers stressing about how they can't get into the car park, it is a bit tight, but not that bad. Everyone I spoke to at the hotel was really friendly and gave great service. The room I had was at the front of the hotel so fad a great view of the transporter bridge, but was slightly noisy as it's a busy road. The room itself was massive, a king size bed, sofa and armchair and room to spare! I had a meal in the restaurant downstairs which was fantastic. They do an early bird special of two courses at a discounted price. I had the fish and chips, which was probably the best I have ever had. Really, really good food, great service and huge rooms...I will definitely be booking this hotel when I'm back this way.

Popped in for lunch and was very pleasantly surprised. Despite it's slightly faded glory look from the outside it is lovely inside with late Victorian tiling and period knickknacks around the place. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. My mother and aunt had the child's portion of fish and chips which were huge!! My father had the regular size and he couldn't get through his the portion was so generous. I had the cold meat platter with cheese, olives and bread which had a great selection and very tasty. We recently visited Newport and stayed in this beautifully restored Edwarian hotel. As this is a grade 2 listed building, many of its original features have been retained, not least of which is the wonderful original bar area. Our bedroom was spacious with a king sized bed and sitting area. The bathroom was modern and towels were large and fluffy. Full English( Welsh?) breakfast was included. We also had an excellentdinner at the hotel . The menu was quite extensive and reasonably priced. Staff were efficient and mist welcoming. Parking was ample, though the entrance is a bit tricky. So happy to have chanced upon The Waterloo Hotel & Bistro in Newport, South Wales. What a blessed relief from the generic budget hotels we've endured on previous trips to attend family occasions in South Wales. This Grade 1 listed, Edwardian pub located beside Newport's Alexandra Dock maintains many of its original features, sympathetically enhanced by the owners impressive collection of historical artefacts. After a drive from London, with our discerning 19 and 23 year old daughters, we received a warm Welsh welcome and were shown to spacious and well appointed bedrooms overlooking the port's iconic transporter bridge. We spent the evening in the hotel bar and restaurant enjoying eating our way through a great menu, friendly service and an unpretentious ambience. While quintessentially British, the dining room & bar evoked pleasant memories of the Belgian bars and French bistros visited in our youth. We couldn't for a second imagine why The Waterloo Hotel wasn't busier on a Saturday night. However after some interrogation, the waitress alluded to the lure for locals of the shopping centre in town. Well for our money to quote Alicia Keys State of Mind Newport parody, you can "Keep your Big Apple, we'll have a tangerine"

We went here for a Sunday meal as it had good reviews and its close to where we were staying. I was a bit put off from the exterior as the area looked a bit run down but the inside was moderately better. They have this weird system of taking your food order before you are seated at your table.Once sat at the table the food arrived quickly. It was excellent value. Three delicious courses for under £20 each. The portions are generous though so we've already decided that when we go again we'll just get two courses. The desserts was the only thing that wasn't that great. We asked for 5 minutes to let our mains settle before dessert was served. I think this meant they left my pudding under the hot lamps while we waited and that meant it was dry and a bit burnt. Overall though the food quality was fab. We're definitely going again.

This hotel is fantastic. Absolutely gorgeous inside not too bad from the out side. Everything on the inside is wonderful . The room was lovely 2 windows so very light and airy. An enormous super king size bed. Hair dryer supplied in the room as well as an iron and ironing board. The tv in the room is about the size of a postage stamp seriously needs larger tvs especially for the size of the rooms. The bathroom very modern obviously been updated to a very good standard. No shower just a bath but with a hand held shower to wash your hair. Also a lift to go upstairs as well as stairs if you don't happen to like lifts. The restaurant and bar is lovely. Choice of a la carte or grill menus also a fish menu. Food was very nice indeed. My only complaint would be desert very tiny portion very nice but larger portions would be nice. Will certainly be going back there again wonderful hotel and wonderful staff who make you most welcome. Ange and Steve.

We ate dinner, not stayed. Both my friends enthused over it, I was not so sure. We booked: it turned out to be quite empty, but it took nearly an hour to get to the table. I thought the menu pretentious. I did not really enjoy my food too much, but it was probably excellent if you liked it: I had great difficulty finding something I liked on the menu and it was not cheap. A visit to view the bar is worth it just on its own. It's lovely to see that the character and facade have been restored and I believe the building is grade ll listed. We have eaten here a few times over the last couple of years (evening and Sunday lunch) and we are always warmly welcomed. It's nice to have a drink in the bar whilst choosing from the menu and being taken through to the restaurant when food is ready to be served. The food is always great and there is a good choice of options on the menu, freshly prepared and good portions. They also have a blackboard with specials and bin end wines which are good value. My favourite is the liquorice ice cream which is home made and tastes superb, I'd come back and eat that every time. The staff are always cheerful, knowledgable and helpful. Stayed two nights in the hotel and dined in the evening once. The location is not the most salubrious however we were pleasantly surprised once inside. The hotel generally is clean and the staff are friendly and efficient. The rooms vary in standard. We had a double on the second floor overlooking the sea (more on that in a moment!). The bed was a king size and sloped slightly towards the headboard end. There was a flat screen TV and tea and coffee making facilities. Unfortunately the only place to sit down was on a stool placed in front of the dressing table. There was a shower room with a drencher which was fine. The room was very clean but was massively let down by the windows. There were two of these with secondary glazing installed. There were venetian blinds between the panes one of which was well broken. The windows on the outer side were filthy. So much so that you could hardly make out the sea. They look to have not been cleaned in years. The paintwork between the glazing was cracked and dirty. Such a shame given the rest of the room and the hotel was very clean. Our friends had a twin bedder next door which was much bigger and had a settee! Being on the road side the traffic noise was quite intrusive. We dined in the restaurant on Saturday night. The meals were of a good standard and so was the service so no problems here in fact I would say well worth a visit. Breakfast however was a bit of a disappointment. The bacon and fried eggs were very good. The sausages were cheap and tasteless. The cereals were ok but there was no fruit to go with them. There were however apples and oranges (whole) available. For those with big cars beware of the car park!!! The only entrance (and exit) is via an arched passage barely wide enough to pass through. The entrance is located on a narrow street which makes turning in into a precision art form. To make matters worse there a buttresses on each side of the arch corners about 2' (60 c.m.) high from the floor. These are painted dark green in contrast to the light brown of the tiled entrance. At dusk they are virtually invisible so like me you could be under the illusion when using wing mirrors that you have room to spare. Why dark green?!! Surely yellow would be more appropriate.Opposite the hotel is the port where there is a visitor centre featuring a transporter bridge. If you have to stay in Newport then this hotel generally is fine, just take a small car.

Visited the transported bridge and had heard about this great place. Not much to look at on the outside, but that adds to the charm of the wonderful experience. The inside is lovely, very genuine in its style. The menu is excellent. A great selection of meat and vegetarian dishes, with a nice focus on fish - so really nicely representative of what I have been desperately combing South Wales for in the last 6 years. The actual dishes did not disappoint! I had line caught sea bass with roasted capers and crayfish. The fish was cooked perfectly, tasty and moist, with a good texture and structure. The roasted capers provided a great flavour with the crayfish. I forget the specifics of the potatoes, some sort of smashed variety, but they combined excellently - the chef really knows their favours! The other main was the best seafood pie I have tasted. Lovely obvious bits of moist white fish, muscles and prawns, in a very well seasoned and flavoursome white sauce, complimented with carrots and peas. The pastry was light and soaked up the sauce, without being tough and too soggy.Squid starter was clearly actually made there! Light and crispy batter that framed the fish brilliantly! It was served with a very creative chunky tartar sauce, also made my someone who knows their fish and how to get the flavours out of.The broccoli and Stilton soup was good. Quite thick so very filling. When I make this I tend to add more Stilton so it is a dominant flavour - although, makes sense that many would love it the way that it is.The staff were perfect. Friendly in a genuine and warm way; there when you wanted them, but never when you didn't (I was on a date, so bad service can really mess that sort of thing up - yes, I know, transport bridge, really? Each to their own...).Overall, it was wonderful experience; and great value for the price. I can't recommend this place enough and writing this makes me want to go back for lunch...

I must start by saying that I think this is my 3rd review for the Waterloo, both times 5 stars but this time it's only 3 stars and that's because the last twice we've been here the food standard has slipped. I don't like writing this review as the owners and staff are fantastic and very likeable. Last night we noticed that the choice on menu and special board has significantly reduced in size and so has the standard of the food. We've noticed that each time we go there are less customers in there, which to me means that it probably isn't just me thinking this. With more and more nice restaurants now in Newport The Waterloo needs to up their game again as its a nice place and I want to see it back to its former glory.

Revisited the Waterloo for an evening meal. Service, food was all excellent and reasonable price. Perhaps a minor criticism - the soup "spiced pumpkin" was huge and also very hot - took ages to finish - this was a meal in itself. Exeptional service and very friendly. An enjoyable experience.

Lovely looking bar on the edge of town, massive inside. Choose not to eat here as lack of vegetarian options on the menu and no people in there! So quite you could here a pin drop! Not even any background music, just noises from the fridges and it was a Saturday night! Drank up and left!

We went for an anniversary meal and were so glad we did. The staff are very welcoming and seat you near the bar with a drink while you choose from the menu. Whilst here you can admire the beautiful decor. Once seated the meal was served promptly and with style. Delicious food, well cooked. It's a little expensive but for a celebration, well worth it. We will definitely go again.

My wife recommended we visit after previous good meals. As we entered we had a pleasant greeting and we were served at the bar but this is where the problems started. The lady said take a seat here whilst we get your table ready, we were sat next to A group of drunks for approximately 45 minutes before we were called to the table. During this time we had re runs of Roy Chubby Brown and Bernard Manning but the icing on the cake was when one shouted out "I'm off for a piss", now I was all for walking out but my wife said to give it a chance, not wanting to be there I ordered the cheapest thing on the menu the 4 oz steak and my wife ordered the pea risotto. I would say out of my 4 oz steak I had 3 oz of fat and my wife said her pea risotto was like porridge and left 3/4 of it. The thing was it wasn't busy and if they had sat us at the table straight away without listening to that filth I might have had a different opinion.

My fiancé and I visited one of our favourite restaurants in Newport to celebrate our engagement along with 23 members of our family. We were a little nervous about how the restaurant would cope with so many of us, but to our delight, we could not fault the service we received. The food was pre-ordered via email a few days beforehand which was really easy to manage. The starters and mains were delicious as always and served hot, and even the steaks were cooked to perfection, as per our requests. The desserts and coffees were to die for, and the champagne was excellent. Another worry was that we would not be able to talk to everyone on the table but the way they arranged the table was perfect. No request was too much trouble and everyone had a fantastic evening. Thank you so very much to all the staff at the Waterloo; we had such a memorable evening.

The building is fabulous and worth a visit. Really tastefully restored and interesting memorabilia throughout. The serving staff are friendly, helpful and very nice....but the food lets the place down. Sorry, would've loved to give a higher score as everything else about the place is so promising.

Visited this place for a Friday afternoon lunch. The decor inside was amazing and goes with the grandeur of this bistro.Friendly staff but not overpowering. The menu was extensive and reasonably priced. The food was of good quality and the portions large enough. The bistro caters for parties and is well worth paying a visit for lunch time or evening.

You may not automatically consider this place for a fabulous meal if you make your judgement from the outside, but set that view aside and give this quirky bistrot a try.The friendly hotel owner and her staff are welcoming and very customer focussed. They are attentive without being overbearing and nothing is too much trouble. But the food is outstanding - all credit to the chef. There are some amazing specials with the seafood chowder being a winner but if steak or a grilled chicken are your simple pleasures, then these are available too. Starters, desserts and a great wine list are all worthy of sampling. So, if you are in the area for any reason, enjoy a superb meal here

Had a very nice meal here with a party of around 20 people, was lovely food considering the size of party, the bonus was that we didn't have to pre order food (which you usually do for such a large party). Service was relatively quick - I assume this was just down to the waiters wanting to get the food out at the same time. The decor was stunning also, beautiful place! Will be retuning

Bends over backwards to go the extra mile!! She and her staff really care... I love staying here

The Waterloo Hotel is an intriguing building I pass on a regular basic. On the advise of fellow Trip Advisors I decided to give it a try, I was not disappointed. With a choice of the main menu, specials board and Lite Bite menu you are spoilt for choice.Great banter with the Land Lord, pleasant and efficient waitress, and an unique interior together with reasonable prices, will I'm sure make this a favourite eating place for me.There is a secure car park to the rear of the Hotel.

We stayed in the Waterloo Hotel and decided to stay for dinner. We were welcomed with excellent piano music in the bar/restaurant. We had a a drink in the bar while studying the menu and were invited to our table once dinner was served. We are not big eaters, so my wife just ordered an appetizer of salmon, and crab while I ordered a lamb stew and a green salad. The quality of the food was excellent and the portions quite large, so my wife had to help me finish the delicious lamb stew. The green salad contained too much slices of red onion, but that was alright since this is easy to separate out. We had a nice glass of Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon to accompany our dinner. Ice cram and coffee for desert was great. We can definitely recommend this restaurant that has retained its original Victorian setting

The Waterloo is very convenient for lunch after a visit to the nearby Transporter Bridge. The interior looks authentic 1930 with beautiful tiles and loads of interesting artefacts throughout. The lunch menu is extensive. We opted for items from the Specials Board. My salt & pepper squid was pretty mediocre. The pigs cheeks, black pudding with mashed potato and gravy that followed was very tasty however. We had hoped for a dessert - strangely, we were given menus but by the time we came to order the chef had 'gone home'! It would have been nice if this time constraint had been mentioned as we would have ordered more quickly. Probably above average in terms of restaurants in Newport but if benchmarked against nearby Cardiff or Bristol, the Waterloo would struggle to compete.

It's probably fifty years since I set foot in the Waterloo, which at that time was a Victorianpub near the Docks entrance, its been sympathetically done up and still retains some facinating memorabilia.Six of us had just about everything on the Early bird menu, I had Crispy Beef with Chilli sauce, nice!!! I had my favorite Fish and Chips, the Cod was stunning with some nice salad, tartar sauce and the biggest double cooked chips I have ever eaten, I couldn't look at a sweet, but those who did were very pleased. We have agreed to come back and give the full menu a go.

I visit the restaurant with friends and colleagues after work quite often and we always have a great meal with friendly service. The lunch menu has a wide range of choices and covers all budgets. The early bird menu is more limited to around 6 mains but is excellent value for money and the dishes are very well presented. The fish and chips are utterly sublime! I had the pate starter last night and that was lovely. It is hard to find 2 courses of this standard anywhere else for the price.

The Waterloo is my favourite restaurant in Newport. The Early Bird menu is excellent value for money because the food is always delicious and beautifully presented. I often choose the fish and chips because it is so tasty and the chips are so chunky! The interior of the restaurant is fantastic- so much history. Service has always been very good and I have never felt anything but relaxed. I have also been here for two large functions and found that there was no drop in quality. I would highly recommend a visit!

Attended a function here recently and after reading the TA reviews, was really looking forward to it. How disappointed I was, not at all what I expected. We were a party of about 50 crammed into one end of the bar/restaurant area. The seating was so tight that it was uncomfortable. The space between the tables and on each table was far too close together so when people got up to go to the bar, the whole table had to move. It was strange because there was plenty of open space around the tables that could have been utilised without disturbing other guests eating there on the night in question. The buffet food cost £12.50 a head and consisted of some battered chicken strips, salads and cold meats - very nice and plenty of food for all of the people attending. After the buffet had finished we expected the plates to be cleared and some sort of desert to be offered but nothing or nobody appeared. The plates were still in front of us 90 minutes after everyone had finished eating and there was no dessert on offer at all. Very disappointing for £12.50.We will go back to see what the food is like as just regular punters. Let's hope it is better value for money next time.

Great food, 3 courses for £25, wine at under £15 and prosecco at £19 a bottle more than palatable, excellent attentive service. Great entertainment from Monmouth's best Elvis, and an entertaining floor show from one of the guests, best New Eve party for years, thanks for accommodating us, NB B&B at £59.95 per room was excellent value too!

I visited the Waterloo Hotel and Bistro on a business visit for lunch with our hosts. The building itself isn’t the most impressive, but do not let this put you off. The interior of the restaurant and bar is lovely and the staff are extremely friendly. The menu is extensive, with a selection of light bites, a main menu and a number of specials. The quality of the food was great, the fish and chips, stroganoff and thai curry were all enjoyed by our party.

Just back from a really lovely lunch at the Waterloo. The place is beautiful, the food was very tasty and the service was faultless. The menu had a good amount of choice and when they ran out of one dessert option, they quickly substituted with another (liquorice pannacotta - which was delicious!). We took my young daughter and they accommodated her brilliantly. A beautiful meal, we will definitely be back.

Don't be put off by the location, we were intrigued by this place from reviews and recommendations and had a lovely evening. We were well looked after, and the food was of good standard. Lovely old Victorian building with fabulous original features. Very clean, modern cloakrooms, and contempory food seemed at odds with surroundings. Food good but not special and expensive. Lacking atmosphere as fairly quiet. Though staff were the best.

The bistro interior is beautiful, they have updated it really well but still kept all the traditional features. The manager and her team were very friendly, however I did feel that the waitresses were inexperienced as they were very slow and we had to keep prompting them. We opted for 2 courses from the set Father's Day lunch menu. The Sunday lunch was very disappointing. The gravy and meat were extremely bland, absolutely no taste. The roast potatoes were just ok and there wasn't enough veg. The desserts seemed microwaved and the bread & butter pudding had a strange slimy texture, again not worth the cost. My daughter had pasta and sauce which again was nothing special, I've made better in my slow cooker (and I'm certainly no chef!). The meal was very overpriced and I felt like I had to apologise to my partner for taking him there for Father's Day. We would go again to try the normal dinner menu as it seems from previous reviews that our experience may be a one off due to the set menu.

The food was ok although parts of the food were 'luke warm' (check your food and send back if you suspect. We didn't and felt a bit off-colour the next day), hotel was outdated, sheets and pillow cases dirty, management very rude and arrogant! They seem happy to take your money and be polite when you have no complaints... Apart from that they get very angry in tone when you question food temperature or unclean rooms. Would rather stay at a premier inn than this so called hotel again. We were advised by some friends who were local to try this place, sadly since we told them about our experience, they visited themselves and came to the same conclusion.Avoid at all costs... Plenty of nicer hotels in the area. I think some people on here either accept sub par service, they are to scared to speak their mind or are friendly with someone at the hotel.

Surprised at the high reviews. It's not up to the standard of the chippies around me in Yorkshire. The staff are a little abrupt with out of towners too. I asked for a breadcake and the response was 'a what? Do you mean a bread roll!?' and not in a jokey way either. The unforgivable thing though is the peas. The mushy peas are mushed up garden peas. At a chip shop!? Disgraceful! The other stuff is ok. Skin on fish which I don't mind but prefer a choice. Chips were decent. Nothing special though and not the cheapest.

I usually stick to 2 chip shops but recently decided to give Harbour Fish Bar a try. The food is reasonably priced with plenty of options & meal deals. Staff are friendly & welcoming. They have a 5/5 food hygiene rating which is great. There is the option to eat in or takeaway. Accessible with some street parking.

Took me five years to find (it was hidden behind a wall and some houses until they were knocked down recently, and even signposted and getting directions I'm not the best at finding things), but it was well worth the wait. The service was excellent, all the staff friendly, and the food is lovely. The batter light and crisp, and best of all it's affordable. I highly recommend this little local chippy and will definitely be coming back - now I know where it is.
